I bought some high quality sandpaper a long time ago from a swap meet for pretty cheap, turns out that it was some pretty good stuff. Now I am pretty low on a couple of grits and I was wondering where I should pick some up from. I know there are a lot of different brands and high and low quality stuff, and have read a couple of old threads on other forums but im curious what you guys use and where do you get it.

I buy everything from my local auto body supply store. The brand they sell is Mirka. High quality,long lasting, not cheap.

There is a FLAPS near me that is family owned and has a great auto body section. That is where I go.

By "Eastern Shore MD" do you actually mean "Dallastown" or "Red Lion?"

So, What kind of sand paper do you use? Brands and models.

Im familiar with the 3m Gold and like it, I have tried klingspore and thought it was crap (Back when I was shop foreman a rep kept trying to get me to switch but his demo products were pure crap, last 1/3 as long and wouldnt stick to my D/A's).

I'll hit up my local shop during lunch and see what they have. I want to price compare with online as I can wait a couple weeks for this stuff.

I bought some from Eastwood as they had a good deal on the sanding blocks so figured get a role of 80 grit while I was at it. Compared to the Norton stuff I buy from the local body shop the Eastwood stuff is crap, I always thought all sand paper was pretty much the same ......

For 2.75 wide adhesive backed rolls, I use Carborundum brand available from Summit. It's half the price of the 3M brand and seems to perform very well.

I think Carborundum is better than 3M. It's a lot cheaper too. Norton is fine but it's as expensive as 3M now. I used to like Mirka too but it's hard to find and expensive now too.

Great product. As for the HD stuff someone mentioned: my experience with it was I buy the Mirka online and it's much, much cheaper than HD or Lowe's or my paint shop (I live in a small town).

Use to live in Red Lion, and then the great town of Windsor.
I use to work at the autozone in dallastown and bought my parts at broadway during my college years
I drove my silver 74 everyday to work and parked it beside the hill by McD's

Hit up Dan's distributing in Manteca. They have a great selection. AND, they are only 20min. from you.That's where I bought all my stuff.

they have precut paper that will fit the sanding boards or they also have rolls that are MUCH cheaper. The rolls are the right width and you just tear the length.

Thought I'd bump this to see if anyone has anything new to add. I'm getting ready to buy sandpaper supplies. I've been using a roll of Norton 80grit purchased at my local paint supply for blocking bare metal for dent straightening. Great stuff, but at almost $50/roll, I thought I'd explore some other options before buying the assortment of grits I'll need to sand primer before basecoat.

I just got some of there 80grit and 120 grit Velcrow backed for my 5 inch dish from Amazon and it is very good stuff.

Hi Andrew, It was actually a visit to the tcpglobal that led to me bumping your old thread. The only PSA rolls I found on their site was Duragold which is half the price of other brands, but haven't found much info (good or bad) about its quality. Any experience with it?

I havent used the products myself but have heard great things. I ended up using the local 3M products on my projects and never ran out, but as mentioned I have heard great things about it.

Any body use the new 3M ceramic grit. It is about 2x the price of standard stuff, reviews say it last for ever. Just not sure if these reviews are on the payroll so to speak.

I find sandpaper gums up much quicker than it wears. I would typically keep a wire brush next to me and once the paper was mostly loaded I would brush it real quick.. But there would be stuck gummy spots that wouldnt come off, after a while the paper is not reliably flat. This is when I would replace it. I typically have a separate sandpaper board specifically for knocking initial filler or primer down as thats the stickiest.

With how good current sandpaper is, I dont think its worth the cost for anyone other than a pro shop.

I can clog it just fine. But sand paper can lose the cutting edge real fast sometimes. In my experience you can feel the edge. My spare time is free, but using worn out paper gets me impatient.

Just completed a full repaint on a Golf,used Norton no fil for prep not only cause I had a lot left over from previous work but find it really good,ditto for their fine wet and dry,I don't believe there is a good cheap paper tried most..rubbish really.
I don't know what you guys pay in the US but here quality paper is around $1 a sheet ,can be less if you shop around.
We generally bemoan the cost of paint but consumables like sandpaper,tape and plastic masking really pumps the cost up further,this is not a cheap exercise even when you go DIY.
