Posted by: weird_looking_cactus May 6 2004, 05:24 PM

Well today I decied to put my new igintion in and replace the old one so I that way I don't have to use two keys one for the doors and the other for the ignition.
When I was trying to take out the ignition it did not come out in one whole peace like the old is. It came out bit by bit. Now its to late cause I destoryed the old one and the new one is to wide to fit. I need the part were the ignition fits in the peace. I guess my ignition switch is just going to have to hang tell I can fix it.

Here is were I got my ignition switch

The ebay ad lied. 75 &76 have a different switch than the 74' and earlier. Besides that, you went about it wrong and screwed the pooch in the process. Ask questions like you usually do before you attempt this on your own. Your old door lock could have been rekeyed to your ignition key for about ten bucks!!!!!!

Extremely sorry, Curt

well, I see your problem... the guy in the ad misinformed... there were 3 ignition types for the 914... 70-71, 72-74 and 75-76... you got sold the 72-74 switch

just bite the bullet and buy the right switch... live and learn... sad.gif

also, you could have re-keyed the locks/ignition:

I'm real sorry it worked out like that dude...

It wouldn't have done me any good to get my old door locks rekeyed cause someone snaped both of the hanldes in half thats why I bought the new ones plus the ignition. Plus my old ignition for some reason wouldn't turn over the engine so I replace the ignition switch still didn't work. Then I hooked up the new and it turns over the start just fine but it won't fit in the slot so I let it hang for now tell I can get it fixed. Also on the pelican articals it dosn't say how to get the ignition out of the 75-76 models.

It's not the mechanical part of the switch that cause's the no engine turn over thing. It's the electrical part on the rear of the switch( the plastic part). Did ya screw up the part of the steering column that the switch fits into? I think I have one for a 75 if ya can't find it locally, but I'll have to look and make sure.
