914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914/6 resto warning

Posted by: Gint Apr 14 2003, 12:51 PM

The 914/6 "rust"oration process has officially begun. I sure hope I can get out for less than $10k. Plan on some stupid CW type questions in the near future. I love pics BTW. I have some nice /4 parts to sell off to help offset the cost of this project.

Motor/tranny have been removed (many thanks to Brant, Scott, Mike and Jon for the assistance). The interior will be gutted this week. I need to remove little stuff like the fuel pump, lines, drain the tank, you get the idea. Then I get to start cutting up the parts car and stripping paint off panels to avoid spending $45/hour for body shop labor.

As Rich says, "onward..."

U R Welcome Mike. I learned a lot and had fun helping (mostly watching, and holding the engine lid up, ) rolleyes.gif . Just invite me over when the sawing begins, call me sick, but I wanna see that. ohmy.gif

Mike,

I'll shoot pics of any part of my /6 anytime you like. Just let me know.

Best of luck with your project!

kim.

Posted by: Gint Apr 14 2003, 07:05 PM

Thanks Kim.

Let's start out. Do you have any decent pictures of the underside of the floor pans where they meet up (and are attached) to the longs? This car actually looks like it might have had a floor pan replacement at some point. I can't explain it any better than that without pics (after tomorrow's scheduled showers) when I get the car back up on jackstands.

See it? You can DO it. Any plans for next Saturday?

Posted by: krk Apr 14 2003, 07:29 PM

Mike,

Post a pic. (I'm not quite sure from your description what you need) I'll post an equivalent one. (long as I don't have to use my new sawzall first. lol)

kim.

Posted by: Gint Apr 14 2003, 07:39 PM

Won't be able to do it for a few days. The car is outside now, and as soon as I put it on jackstands the code enforcement Betty is gonna be all over me...

Posted by: krk Apr 14 2003, 07:44 PM

"Go Betty!" -- sounds like fun ;-)

The other way to do it is like a graphics program. Eye point and direction. For example: "with the front on jack stands, the camera behind the left front wheel, aimed at center of the engine". or some such thing.

kim.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 14 2003, 08:15 PM

Mike.

I dont want to steal Kims pics... but I have the 6 here with perfect pans and its all clean. I can shoot them tomorrow morning for you. I'll show you how the pans go on the car.

B

Posted by: krk Apr 14 2003, 08:18 PM

Brad,

Steal away dude! I'd have to go outside to shoot mine!

kim.

Posted by: Gint Apr 14 2003, 08:22 PM

I don't think Kim or I will care Brad. I'll take all the help I can get.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 14 2003, 08:25 PM

Mike,

what the shops normally do: they cut away the old ones and leave a 1/2 inch lip all the way around and weld the new ones to that. Then they lay in some seam sealer and it all looks normal when they are done.

B

Posted by: Gint Apr 14 2003, 08:29 PM

That's the description I was trying to come up with. That's about what it looks like.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 14 2003, 08:42 PM

Shoot a pic when you can. I cant imagine a shop from this area doing a bad job on the floorpans. Most of the shops have lots of experience doing the install.

Look for welds on the sides of the center tunnel. The center tunnel sits on the floorpans with a half inch lip running the full length of the tunnel. They weld the floors to that lip. This is normally covered with the tar paper. Spot welds will be clean... mig weld will be obvious.

I hope to get started removing the interior tomorrow afternoon. I'll get pics of what I find.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 08:35 PM

You know, while I was out poking at rust and taking pictures before the rain started, I thought I might as well post the pics here. So if you guys don't mind, I think I'll just use this very space to document the progress of this small task over the next few months. It'll save me the trouble of making web pages.

Pics too follow.... MDB2.gif

Post moron

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 08:53 PM

Another view (look at that sticker on the spare)

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 08:55 PM

This was after I removed the backpad and mat.

Posted by: seanery Apr 15 2003, 09:06 PM

I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS! ohmy.gif

Mike,

Whats that cut/crease 2/3 down on the firewall?

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:07 PM

A little surface rust in this channel. Not entirely certain what it's purpose is.

They all have it though. The donor-mobile has the same seam, but it's covered in seam sealer.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:09 PM

Again, I'm not really sure what it's for.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:10 PM

The seats and backpad. These will be stored for future resale. I'm going to use the cherry backpad and seats from the donor car.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:12 PM

Another spot of knarly surface rust on the firewall.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:13 PM

See that crack on thje floor pan and the hole in the middle of it?

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:15 PM

That's concrete you can see through the hole.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:17 PM

I almost forgot to show this pic. The worst of it. That rust continues up the console and under the battery tray.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:19 PM

Passenger side rear corner. There is actually a hole or two you can't see in the pic.

I'm alomost done with today's pics. Stay tuned...

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:21 PM

Aha! Now we can see some previous shoddy repair.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:23 PM

Another daylight sighting from interior panels. This is the passenger seat belt mounting hole at the "repaired" section

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:24 PM

Although the rust stops at the cross brace on the passenger side, this is the driver's side in front on the brace. That's a rusty hole that's coming apart.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 09:32 PM

Post engine/trans removal. That's the donor-mobile in the background.

Most of the rust looks fixable, a real pain but it can be done. I am sure the tranny can be welded back up.
Nice shop!! Almost as clean as Brad Anders!
Geoff

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 10:02 PM

Thanks Geoff. It's not that nice though. Close up, it's a pit. Waaay too much crap, and not even close to Brad's.

Wait till I get decent pics tomorrow of the "replacement" panel someone riveted to the side of the engine compartment behind the battery tray all the way down to the long that's rusty, bent and full of holes.

Here's a http://members.rennlist.com/gman/porsche/914-6/rust/ I had already taken.

Posted by: Bleyseng Apr 15 2003, 10:18 PM

It's still way less rusty than the 70 car I cut up. Saveable but lots of work.
Geoff

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 15 2003, 10:29 PM

Gotta love those rust-free California cars! laugh.gif

Still, I think I'd be more tempted to deck the moron what flattened your quarter panel than anything else.

Posted by: Gint Apr 15 2003, 10:50 PM

Oh I was tempted all right. But the flip side is the quarter was going to take some cutting to do the rust repair anyway, so his insurance company is footing a portion of the bill.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 15 2003, 11:43 PM

It appears that we FUCKED UP when we told you to buy that car. Dean Vanney knows these cars forwards and backwards and should have known this thing had cancer...bad.

I feel bad.

On the flip side.... the silver six you and Brant went and looked at for my friend Doug.... somebody did some rust repair in the right side frame rail and placed a flat piece if steel over the repairs that sits flush with the engine shelf... NICE.

I'm now pissed OFF.

B

Posted by: Gint Apr 16 2003, 06:54 AM

Didn't mean to piss you off Brad. I'll live though. I knew the car had rust. Not blaming anybody else.

I didn't see that piece you're talking about on Doug's car. But then I never lifted the car to get my head that far underneath. Is it under the engine shelf?

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 16 2003, 09:44 AM

Eh, I think Ginter was due for a nice year-long project. biggrin.gif

Keep the pictures coming, please. I want to see how some of that deep rust is taken care of.

Why? Multiple projects for months at a time in some cases aren't enough? When this car is done, I'm going back to stuff like extending my deck and finishing my garage. I'm swearin off cars for a while.

I'll get pics, but the body shop is an hour across town, so there will be gaps.

Posted by: Lawrence914-6 Apr 16 2003, 09:52 AM

Damn, Mike.

I looked at your pictures. That's very discouraging.

I recommend that you call Mayeur and get a set of his longitudinal stiffening kits. Install the braces on both sides to keep the car even.

Sorry,
Rusty

Posted by: Gint Apr 16 2003, 09:54 AM

Thanks Lawrence. Dunno about any chassis (or just long) stiffening kits at this point. I have a month of stripping this car and the donor to look forward to before I can even get to that point.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 16 2003, 11:55 AM

No need for lift to see this. Its directly below where the battery tray should be. Nicely concealed with the trunk paint. I'll shoot some pics today. Busy answering the friggin phone all day yesterday.

B

Posted by: Gint Apr 16 2003, 01:13 PM

I was just instructed by someone at SSI to call you on your cell phone and NOT the company phone. Don't you own the joint?

Posted by: silver six Apr 16 2003, 04:18 PM

Yeah, the guy who answers the phone at SSI is not that friendly. In need of a girlfriend maybe.

So Brad and Ginter,

I think you guys did a great job checking out the silver 6 in Colorado for me. The only rust I can find is superficial and not structural. The brakes kick ass, the body panes are fairly straight (discribed like Ginter said and in good shape for a 33 year old car), the cooling system is more than sufficient (it hardly ever leaks oil) and the drive train is in excellent shape. The engine is a piece of art, and the intake and exhaust makes the coolest sounds I've ever heard a car make. It's geared high, but that's only because it's stock. And at least partially due to the high gearing, I've already kicked the shit out of a vet one night on the 280 without ever shifting out of 5th. Imagine 70 mph (already at 4000 rpm) to 120 mph pushing you hard in to the back of the seat. So I'm really happy with the car and I think you guys deserve props.

To top it off I hardly knew you guys and you were willing to do all this legwork for free. That's an amazing testiment to the 914 community and especially the group of people here on 914club.

As far as the right side long, we don't know at this time that there's any structural rust under the metal engine shelf plate and the PO specifically said he repaired that area. I can detect no sag and my superficial inspection found no rust. So there's no need at this time to jump to conclusions. If there's no significant structural rust (and there probably isn't) then its no harm no foul.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 16 2003, 04:22 PM

We get hammered daily 20-30 times (no joke) with Kaiser Permante calls since they changed their number.

This has gone on for 9 months now... you would be a little pissy trying to answer the phone all day also.

This place is big... so trying to answer the phone every day 60 some odd times between 2 people gets real OLD when half of them are not for us. Just call my cell.

Oh.. Mike..

I dont own shit. The deal wont be complete for 2 years (buyout period)

B

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 16 2003, 04:28 PM

And Doug...

Your brakes suck. Nice calipers, but I think the bias valve is toast. Our 4 cyl cars have better brakes...LOL. I'll look into it.

B

Posted by: Mueller Apr 16 2003, 04:34 PM

I thought Mike knew of the rust on the /6.....now I did recommend that he not buy the 911...too much work for the money and transportation logistics

I wonder if those yellow wheels have surfaced somewhere??

Posted by: Gint Apr 16 2003, 06:01 PM

Where to start.

Douglas:

QUOTE

That's worth the purchase price all by itself.

QUOTE
the PO specifically said he repaired that area.

I went back and looked at the pics that the PO had sent you. That side engine shelf looked immaculate (although not stock) in the pics. In retrospect, I probably didn't even give it a second glance when I looked at the car. I was really looking for rust more than anything else. And that whole floorpan thing...

Brad:

Don't blame him a bit. Although a girlfriend might help....

Mueller:

I did indeed. I didn't realize that it was this bad, but I blame no one. I knew it, I bought it. Can't wait to get it back on the road again all shiny and solid.

Posted by: Gint Apr 16 2003, 06:05 PM

Now, where was I?

Good news! The front trunk and fuel tank area are in really good shape. A tiny bit of surface rust here and there, but certainly no major deal at all.

This car had an underbody sway bar at one time. I'll have to patch those holes.

There is some VERY minor surface rust in here. It may not be rust at all, but the paint looks kinda shabby. I'm not sure if I'll mess with the tank area, but a good cleaning, prep and maybe some POR15. I don't know yet until I get everything out of there.

Just to clarify, no one should feel bad. There is no structural rust I am aware of. Brad, can you confirm? In any case, I appreciate your help in the purchase, Brant. There's no way I could have made it out to Colorado and, as I've said, I'm happy with the car.

Brad,

So the rear brakes lock up, right? So my brakes suck, but you can make them rule. Thanks for looking into it.

And, Ginter,

Interesting photos. Can't wait to see the progress.

So, Mike, what are we seeing here with the paint? It looks like an orange re-spray over red paint or just a weird camera side effect.

IPB Image

Posted by: Gint Apr 17 2003, 02:13 PM

It's just wierd light. The car did receive a paint job sometime in it's life in the original color (although it appears to be laquer). They only painted the outside of the car. Jambs and trunks are all still factory paint.

Near as I can tell anyway....

Posted by: Gint Apr 18 2003, 08:49 PM

Damn I love tools. The right tool makes all the difference. I was chipping away at undercoating, paint and rust with a putty knife. I went to the unmolested donor car and realized that I was hacking away at seam sealer. I remembered a Pelican post where the guy used a large wire cup brush. Quick trip to Ace. Worked like a champ.

Thanks Kim. I'm not getting as much done as fast as I'd like to though. I really need to get movin. My wife's family is coming over tomorrow. And I'm heading over to the track for a couple of hours for the first PCA track event. Lots of rain today. I really ought to get my in-laws to help me push the car up the driveway and back into the garage. wink.gif

I have been tracking your project. I like to think positive: "You have a very enjoyable project in restoring a car, and you will know what you have in detail when you are done. The joy comes when the project is finished and you stand back with that cold beer looking everything over; an impish grin ttugs at your mouth as deep satisfaction settles in; MAN, THAT COLD BEER IS GOOD".

That cold beer sounded so good that I even went out and got one to see how enjoyable it was. IT WAS GOOD!! Wish I lived in Colorado so I could help you. I even went out to the garage and uncovered my 914-8 (sounds impressive, but it was in approximately the same shape as yours, only it had been in a fire burn; I have protected it for fifteen plus years). Now I am taking out the v-8 and making a 2.7 runner; everything totally Porsche

Your parts car looks great and it will all blend together .

I think we should take bets on when you will finish it; I will buy you a six pack if you make me the winner. Seriously, when you get it done in your own time frame, I will buy you a six pack so you can enjoy the deep feeling of satisfaction.

I will watch your resto with great interest.

Thanks Steve. I'm really hoping to have it back on the road by the end of August at least. Sooner would be better.

I didn't get a lot done today, but half of the floorpan tar has been scraped off. A lot of time today was burned up removing this sheet someone riveted and bondo'd under the right side engine shelf. I didn't have to do this since this section of the car will be cut off and replaced anyway, but curiousity was killin' me.

Nothin. That's the box the FLAPS gave me when I was buying all the gaskets, oil and tranny fluid for the truck motor swap a month ago. Now it contains the /6 carbs, linkage, fuel pump, filters and lines.

I need more room.

speaking of cold, I flew into Denver on Friday and was surprised at how much snow was still on the ground. Not just the mountains either!

Mike,

Nice engine stand. eBay special? One time, or a repeating offer?

Oh... when I've had motors out of my 914/4s, I usually ask a couple of folks to help lift them up onto a workbench. How do you get that /6 engine up on the stand?

Yeah... bondo sucks. But it's a fact of life in today's body work industry: "generally straigten and bondo" or "replace the panel" is often the only two courses of action production body shops use.

The engine stand was a FLAPS special. The brackets for mounting an air coled motor (Porsche or VW) came from ebay. Guy does "Buy it now" only for like $54 or $56 bucks. I can dig up en email if you want me to.

Cherry picker onto my lift. It sat there for a few days. From there I mounted the brackets to the motor, then lifted the stand and bolted it onto the brakets, and then lowered the lift.

I'd like to see that someday... when you decide to put the motor back down (I assume you'll use the same method). Would you document how/where you hook everything up?

No way. tongue.gif The cherry picker part wasn't pretty. Brant warned me, but I insisted. I will do the same thing again, but I'm going to weld up a bracket of sorts to bolt to my V8 manifold lift plate. It should look something like the http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/Tools_folder/Engine_Lift_Bar2.JPG that Pelican sells. I won't need the lift at that point. I can use the cherry picker to lift the motor/stand, and then just unbolt the stand.

BAHAHAHAHA. Famous last words.

Does the /6 have undercoating that you plan on removing? If so you can try killing two birds with one stone and have someone scrape the bottom side as you heat and scrape the inside of the floor pan.

My personal weapon in avoiding DPO status is to bury my mistakes or blame them on the PDPO.

Probably.

It looks like somebody might have been there already. From the underside of the pan directly under the tunnel and just at the front of the shifter are a couple of bumps that look like weld spots from the inside. Which is kind of a scary thought after seeing the rest of the "repairs".

Yup. But the tar has already been removed. The stuff on the bottom comes off really easy with 4.5" GRINDER and a big cup brush. I'm going to wait until the car is in the shop and on the rotisserie to finsh the underside.

I spent most of this week stripping more stuff off of the donor. It's a real PITA dismantling a car that you want to keep all of the parts off of and in good shape. Ferg came over yesterday evening to help cut off the right rear quarter. The large pics got corrupted, but here's a couple of small shots.

Thanks Ferg!

was the donor car a terminal cancer case before you decided to cut it up? something nobody seems to save. the little plastic tubes that cover the wire holding prongs. i soaked a bunch in oil eater (costco item, cheap and works well). microwaved them in water, after rincing. leave them in the hot water, go out to the car and put them on one at a time. they are maliable and can be shaped to near original form.

Mike,

1) It's evil that you are hacking up a silver car.

2) this is childish, but you missed a headlight. (and the motor, and the cover)

3) I have to work on my car tomorrow -- I figure if I do 8 - 10 % of what you are up to, I won't have to hide my head.

4) Can't wait to see the results! mueba.gif

Kim,

If I had known then what I know now, I probably would have spent all the money and had it fixed. Live and learn. But - the silver car will be a part of mine and several others for a long time to come. The rear apron and trunk floor is on a very nice car in Canada somewhere. The rest of the trunk floor will be in Eric Shea's GT replica in Salt Lake. Various small parts are on cars all over the country. And more parts will go out to help keep other teeners on the road.

Chris,

I'm going to use them on my /6. I'm updating the seats and backpad.

I'm sure you know I'm messing with ya. Silver is my color for some reason. Of course, you've touched my cdn soft spot -- we'll gloss over that :-) -- but shipping rust free materials up north is a good thing! Some cars have to come apart to supply the needs of other sponsored cars. it's a good thing!

I'm sure of that. What was significant was the date of this particular snow. It's not unheard of, but it's usually much less. On the up side, it was a beautiful sunny afternoon. The snow is just a memory now. Tomorrow will be a fine day for stripping paint.

Dude, you may have hit your head when ducking!

The us buck has sunk noticeably over the last several months -- most noticable against the euro -- I was over last summer and the euro was at something like 98 cents. Last week it was at 1.12 or so. The cnd buck has move up 5 or 6 cents as well -- it's moved enough to worry economists as a high cdn dollar hurst the export business and that's a pretty big chunk of the cdn economy. (I actually prefer it low, 'cause I get paid in US buck -- well at least when I work -- and it makes family trips home sort of shopping heaven :-)

Mike -

As you go through the project on the rear quarter panel, I'd love to see more pictures of how you take the donor apart and put the panels onto the 6. I've got a 72 that is gonna need a right-rear quarter and I want to remove the old one in the cleanest way possible so seeing your process will be very helpful.

Also, what is the recommended treatment for body panels once you've got them down to bare metal. If you leave them bare, they'll likely get sureface rust before the body shop even gets to them. Is there something that is recommended to temporarily protect them from this?

My project is really small compared to what you are up against, but I really appreciate all the pictures so that we can all learn from this.

Posted by: Gint May 11 2003, 12:36 PM

Nuts. Paint stripper, wire brush on the grinder, sanding, whatever. Stripping paint this way is waaaaaay too much labor. It's stooopid. There's a Din N Strip in town. It's that or media blasting for this quarter. It just isn't worth it.

That was the biggest reason why I started this thread and maintain it with pics and progress. If you have specific Q's, don't hesitate to ask. I can take pics at a moments notice.

Despite those snow pictures yesterday, Denver is a very dry climate. Flash rust doesn't happen real fast. But, to answer your question, a quick shot of primer after a days work removing paint will take care of that. I'm sure those that know a better method will share it with us. The stripping companies that I've seen or heard of shoot primer on the stripped part as soon as it comes out of the last rinse tank and is dried. I'll be sure to persue that option.

Update 5/19 - My body work guy said he has an acid wash that will remove any flash rust (and any thing else for that matter) that he uses prior to paint.

This project is more than my skills alone at this point can handle. A professional will be doing all of the metal/body work, and it will be farmed out from there for paint. I'm trying to do everything I can (grunt work) to avoid paying $45/hour to have him do it. He told me I could come over and do more grunt work while the car is in his shop to save myself some $$$. That will give me further opportunities to take pics. He's an hour across town though, so I will only be over there a couple of times a week.

My goal is to get all of the rust repaired properly. That is the utmost priority. The surface rust that is bubbling up on the left side of the car in spots will be repaired also. So I'm committed to a full exterior repaint as well. I don't think I'm going to pop for engine compartment, trunks, underside of floor pans to be painted. Only the exterior and the bare metal form the new quarter. That may change, we'll have to see after I get a professional looking over the car removing rust, etc... and we have a better idea of all the work that's going to be required.

I'd like to paint the floorpans under the car and inside the cockpit, the inner firewall, front trunk floor, etc... with POR 15 and topcoat with matched paint obtained when the car is being painted professionally (alternatively POR15 has an orange rock resistant top coat). I can do that myself after the car comes back. I need for this work to hold up over time, because I'm *NOT* building a garage queen.

Dude,

These are 30 year old cars. I'm guessing we all encounter surprises when digging underneath.

(I do agree that it is... er.. "intersting" that the bondo is on *top* of the original paint. It's hard to say much positive about the quality of some of the work done on some these cars. Personally, I think the work you are doing is cool -- another one is getting a better-than-average shot at lasting another 30 years)

Keep those pics coming -- others are using them to give their rides a fighting chance!

I know. It's frustrating though to find more work around every corner.

Posted by: krk May 12 2003, 09:06 PM

Mike,

I'm with you on the frustration. Worse, untill you go around every corner, you can say for sure that you won't find somethihg ... er... "interesting". (believe me, it's happening here too) But you've got around most of the corners that there are, and while there may be other "bings" along the way, there just isn't too many new opportunities to drive you crazy -- (shallow conselation, I know)

But the car looked great in the "day one pics" and it will ROCK on completion.

And we'll all get something out of your travel. And that always deserves "thanks",
and even more, it deserves -- beer.gif beer.gif beer.gif beer.gif

Posted by: Gint May 16 2003, 10:59 PM

It looks like a marathon weekend ahead for me. The plan is to have the car to the shop next Saturday. Body guy says (as I expected and planned to do anyway) that the bondo has to come out. I asked him how he was going to fix all of the thin wavy panels. "Oh I'll metal work 'em." This guy is old school. I've seen a steel top he made for a 32 street rod, out of flat sheet stock. Nice. I shudder to think what it's going to cost me. The replacement quarter, front and rear lids all were dropped off at the stripper today.

The car is on the trailer and ready for the car wash tomorrow (early). Once I get the engine bay and inner fender wells cleaned up, the oil tank, bumpers, lights etc... will all be removed. Then the paint stripping really begins. I hope to have the exterior panels down to bare metal (or very nearly complete) by Sunday evening.

All of the oil from the tank preserved this quarter pretty well. Oil leaks do serve a purpose sometimes.

IPB Image

I almost hate to remove the sail panel vinyl. Oh well, it's gotta go.

IPB Image

From the looks of this trim piece and the paint on the bottom of it from the poor mask job at the previous repaint, I think the vinyl is original to the car.

IPB Image

All of that rust in the right quarter, but yet the rear trunk still holds water. This was an hour after I got back from the car wash.

IPB Image

Tons of bondo over the factory paint. I'll be sanding for a long time.

I could have fixed the very small bend in the lip that someone bondoed over. There's is well over 1.8" of the stuff on this lip.

Posted by: Gint May 18 2003, 07:26 PM

Thanks Kim. I'll be able to breath easier when it get to the shop. I'll probably still put in 20 hours a week on it when it's at the metal shop. Once it goes for paint (seperate shops), I'm off the hook for labor until it's finished. Then I get to put it all back together. That will probably take twice as long as it took to take it apart. I think I'll move the schedule out. I'll be happy if I can do some Fall driving.

He hasn't done any work on my car yet, but he came over to my house and looked at my web pics in order to do the estimate for the insurance claim after the moron swiped my right rear quarter. He used to be an insurance claims adjuster so he knows the game. I talk to him almost every week asking questions and picking his brain while stripping my car to prep for the work. He's always been extremely helpful and courteous. He's even willing to let me come and do work on the car in his shop. I hope to learn a lot in doing so. I've seen his work and it's fantastic. Good news, bad news today.

Good - I dropped the truck off tonight for the trailer brake controller install tomorrow.

Bad - Wife's Mommy wagon sounds like she's managed to go through yet another set of brake pads.

Good - Cowl appears to be decent. A tiny bit of surface rust in the windshield corners, but that's easy to take care of. Caught it soon enough.

Bad - The drivers door has a hole in it and some rust.

Good - I still have a pair of cherry doors from the 72 door mobile

Bad - If I use the other doors, I'll have to do a full repaint to change the color.

(Sorry about the Andy pic. This was a tough shot given the conditions)

I wish I'd bought stock in 3M 20 years ago. These disks are the best thing to happen to paint removal since sandpaper itself. IF your going down to bare metal that is. They will very quickly remove two layers of paint and all of the bondo and sealer as well.

IPB Image

The top right one is the type you can buy at FLAPS. The 1/4" collet is OK, but a drill is slow, and a air die grinder has no torque. The lower left (bag of purple units) is available at most larger auto body supply stores. You can put them on a 1/4" collet, but I put them on my grinder. The lower left small-ish unit is the one I wore down to a nub. Eastwood sells a 7" one with a backing pad. I need to order a few of those. I can't find them locally.

This is the package of 4 disks themselves. Part number is visible.

I am glad you have find the disks I would have liked to give you as a birthday present. Arent they superior !! I have used those black ones a long time, but found couple of weeks ago those purple ones even better.

I dont like the wire brush. It removes only loose surface rust and it warms the metal.

Posted by: Gint May 27 2003, 06:58 AM

Thanks Timo. And thanks for the email! It was a good way to start off a Monday (OK, it's really Tuesday after the holiday weekend, but...).

I wish I'd bought stock in 3M 20 years ago. These disks are the best thing to happen to paint removal since sandpaper itself. IF your going down to bare metal that is. They will very quickly remove two layers of paint and all of the bondo and sealer as well.

They also work GREAT for fiberglass repair.

As a bonus it also turns the garage into a place better than an opium den if you are looking to get high from just breathing.

Get a mask or get dizzy.

Posted by: Gint May 27 2003, 07:22 AM

I'm using them wth the car on the trailer outside. I got tired of blowing all of the dust out of the garage.

Posted by: Gint May 28 2003, 09:53 AM

These panels were dipped first, but it wasn't the really caustic stuff that removes everything but the metal. Pretty strict EPA guidlines on that I believe.

I chatted with a person about sand blasting the other day... he says it work hardens the metal and makes it tougher for the body shops to "work". Anyt thoughts on this ??

Planning on cutting that 4 cylinder mount off before the quarter goes in. I'll let the metal worker do it. I don't need it. And harder or not, the metal guy will get it done. He's good. I'll ask him about it though.

Posted by: Brad Roberts May 28 2003, 10:05 AM

I would install the battery tray also... before the quarter gets welded in..LOL

I'm about 10 days away from having a chassis acid dipped.

B

Battery tray - will do. That's the plan.

If there was a good acid dip place in town, this tub would have gone for a bath.

WooHoooo!!!! I talked to Steve again today. He was out of town. We're good for pushing the schedule out. The plan now is to get the car into the shop mid-July. That will give me plenty of time to strip everything myself without stressin over it.

No worries Kim, thanks. There are a lot of things in life we can't control. Like Birthdays. 914's we can fix, growing old we can't.

Live it up.

Happy belated b-day old guy...

Just scrolled through this thread and checked out the picts. Ouch... Guess the brown car color wasn't that ugly, huh? (ducking for cover...)

If you are serious about a driver, I can look for you. Does this project mean the families yearly CA trip is off this year? If not, let us know when.

sm

Posted by: Gint May 30 2003, 06:56 AM

Hey thanks Steve. No 3-5 trips to Cal this year. I would like to make German Auto Fest, but it's iffy.

If I can't find a decent driver around here, I'll just drive the truck. But if you run across a great roller, I've got motors/heads/carbs/FI/wheels/brakes/sway bars and all kinds of stuff for 4 cylinders in my stash. And I own my own trailer now too. Hitch it up and go you know.

"The Brown Car" was a beauty! It would have made a fantastic conversion car. I wish now I had just held on to it. Live and learn eh?

Regarding the car. He pushed his deadlines back and was going to deliver to the body shop more in the fall. I'm not trying to steal any thunder from him... hopefully he will see this and respond with a better update.

You need to buy some metal panels from Restoration Design or Mittelmotor. Here's a pic from Restoration Design's web site.

When I bought the car, it had a MOMO Monte Carlo wheel. I swapped it out with my MOMO Racing Line wheel. It bolted right to this adapter. I think it's just an old MOMO adapter. The newer MOMO adapters don't look like this I know that.

OUCH!!

Guys, when you pull a harness out, PULL a NEW WIRE the other way as you take it out..

You know why? laugh.gif

1. Easy to pull the harness back, less likely to hurt the harness pushing.

2. SO YOU KNOW WHERE AND HOW IT WAS PULLED.

It was a lot of fun though, taking every nut and bolt off the car. Maybe the good news is I didn't have to try to put it back together again, although I was pretty careful to label all the parts.

All right, I'm done for the day. If I keep going, I'd have to put on pants. It's starting to get a little chilly. I have the bare panels all covered in POR-15 Metal Ready. The engine lid and side panels are all stripped of the grill material. The adjustable prop valve and the lines to the rear brakes are out. The brake and fuel lines are all disconnected and un-restrained in the tunnel. All I have to do is:

The under the car work to get the MC, lines and the resevoir out.
Take out the ashtray bracket, glovebox door and lock.
Remove the tar from the top of the tunnel (that's all the tar that is left).
I think the threshold aluminum piece is still on the passenger side.
Swap out some wheels for the trip on the trailer.
Strip the windows out of the doors and swap out the passenger door.

I think that's about it. Tomorrow's another day. Pretty much my last full day to get this stuff done before I leave on Friday. driving.gif

Hey gint, maybe a stupid question, but what's the final vision on the car? Full resto? Hot rod? Racer?
Eric

Posted by: Gint Jan 27 2004, 12:07 AM

Not stupid at all Eric.

Mostly stock, but I'm no CW. The motor is already a warmed over unit. When this motor goes, the new one will be bigger. I'm installing a moveable passenger seat. GOing to get a James Woods shifter. I'll put in new hardware where possible, and I don't care if it isn't what the factory put in it. I'm not that anal. Thinking about carbon fiber on the dash front. If (won't be for a long while) I ever sell it though, it won't be hard for someone to CW the car and return it to bone stock. And they will not have to repair rust.

I want to drive the car. And enjoy it. I love 914s. It won't see rain unless I get caught in it, and it will always spend the night in the garage, but it will be driven - regularly.

It's kind of whatever I decide as I go along.

Posted by: krk Jan 27 2004, 12:53 AM

Ah. Didn't know you were changing the seating. Not that I disagree -- I'm debating many things about mine as we speak -- but I'm interested in what other /6 owners decide on. I'm switching sides blacked out chrome and many other things -- prolly a reaction to just wanting a running 914 (lol) -- so I'm following a lot of discussions on this sort of thing.

Why the change?

Hawktel,

This is a dumb question, but have you "done time" riding in the passenger seat? I only ask because we brought ours down from Vancouver (BC) to San Jose and traded driving duties. I spent time in the seat and was surpised that it was not uncomfortable.

That said -- I loved the cabin in my '73. Symmetry has it's beauty.

I want to do it, that's good enough for me. It's nothing that can't be un-done. I have a cherry set of seats, backpad and door panels from the 72 to put in this car. That will save upholstery costs. And I will save the original back pad and seats so it can be put back to original without to much hassle. I will almost certainly black the roll bar trim and the trim piece under the vinyl on the sail. Also the front and rear seal channels. I'm debating blacking the wing window post as well.

Did these studs come loose on anyonelse's dash frame. The nut and stud spin on my frame. Couldnt remove it...

Bummer Dave. I was lucky and got my nuts off. wink.gif

I'm also in the process of changing to a movable passenger seat. The biggest complaint I had about the fixed seat was the amount of wind, the dead air spot seems to be about 3 inches off the backpad.

Nothin like the smell of burnin rubber - In the garage. Mr. Torch got some exercise tonight. Sway bar bushings are "toast". It and the front brake hard lines are out, crap wheels mounted up. Nothing left now but hang a passenger door, strip door latch mechanisms from one door, and door latch/windows from the other. I should be rolling out of town Friday a.m. with my to-do list - done.

Posted by: Gint Jan 27 2004, 08:54 PM

The driver's door is completely stripped. These early doors don't weigh squat when they're empty.

This is a dumb question, but have you "done time" riding in the passenger seat? I only ask because we brought ours down from Vancouver (BC) to San Jose and traded driving duties. I spent time in the seat and was surpised that it was not uncomfortable.

Actually I did 2 hours in the passenger seat Kim. It wasn't to bad.

driving.gif

The main problem with the regulation seats is I don't fit. I'm 6 foot 10, 300 pounds. And I like comfortable seats. I guess I could install the drivers seat in the passenger spot. Dunno. I'm looking at custom seats more still.

Posted by: krk Jan 28 2004, 09:40 AM

Hm -- 6'10" -- I can easily believe it would take something custom to get comfortable!

Good luck in the hunt!

Posted by: Howard R Jan 28 2004, 01:15 PM

Gint,

Just a thought on your seats. If you are planning to put some race seats in at some time or other it will be a lot easier if you move the crossmember in fromt of the seat about 100 - 150 mm towards the front of the car. You would have to fabricate a carrier in the meantime to mount the seat height adjuster. If I was doing it all again I would certainly move it. It would also make a good place to mount the extinguishers.

Thanks Glenn!

I'm going to post some of the info from Glenn, and from Larry Lee's db that he provided me with prior to my purchasing the car. For those of you that don't know, Larry has been collecting 914 advertisements from Excellence and Pano and other sources for many years. Feel free to email him at llee50@stny.rr.com

Hi Mike,
Yes, I have 2 entries on your car. One from 1987 and the other from 1992.

This database is an effort by Porsche 914/6 enthusiasts to document these
rare and unusual
sports cars. 3363 of these cars were produced over 3 short years starting
in 1970 and in
the intervening decades, these few have left their mark on the streets and
race tracks of
the world. Due to their age and competition potential, many of these cars
have compiled
interesting and colorful histories.

The purpose of this effort is to provide current owners a place to research
their cars
and a place for them to share any research they might have done. For the
prospective
buyer, this provides a place to research cars they might consider buying.
The things that
you might find in this database include information on originally installed
equipment,
original engine and transmission serial numbers, previous advertisements in
national
magazines, names and addresses of previous owners and owner submitted
information.

This database is intended to promote the preservation of Porsches first mid
engined
roadster and is aimed at those who appreciate these cars.

My database currently has 2385 entries with 770 unique serial numbers.
There were 3363 of these cars produced with about 1700 of them
being officially imported into North America.

The information in my database comes from several sources, these include:
Every issue of Panorama from 1970 to date,
Every issue of Excellence from April 1987 to date,
Every issue of Road & Track from 1970 to date,
Some issues of Hemmings from 1998 to date,
Defunct publications like Porsche Trends Gallery
And other random publications like AutoWeek.

Various web sites from about 1996 to date. The web sites include among
others:
Road Glue http://www.roadglue.com/
914/6 Registry http://www.stazak.com/914reg/
914 club http://www.dgi.net/914/
The Rennlist http://www.rennlist.org/
Automobile Atlanta http://www.autoatlanta.com
914 Owners Association http://home.earthlink.net/~deeds/
Ebay http://www.ebay.com/
And random other web sites like PCA region web sites and personal web sites.

Also personal observations of 914/6s at various East Coast and Midwest
events.

I used to do a price run on the database from time to time but haven't been
able
to do this since I changed database programs due to Y2K issues. The
following chart
is the output of the price run. Its getting kind of stale but should give
you some
idea of the price trends for these cars.

Hello Mike,
I noticed that you bought Bob's old 914-6. I see that you started to restore
the car, how is that going? This car was in Illinois back in the 70's and I believe it was sold out of O'Hare Porsche. The rust is typical of a car that spent time here in Illinois back when it was a daily driver.
Keep me posted,

Are there 200? 500? 800? 1000 nationwide? Not too many, and a whole lot fewer than I ever understood there to be.

But then theres only 120 remaining LE cars that we know of...

Great question Jeff. I'm sure there a lot of 914/6 owners that would like to know the answer. Exchange of information is what it's all about.

I'd like to have a nice original six before the $12,000 price ceiling shatters and they can't be had for less than $16k or $20k. I really believe that will happen in my lifetime.

aren't we already at $16-20K?? I rarely see them go for less than this, ones that don't need paint/resto.

I agree, doesn't 12k get you just a bit nicer than a project?

I see people trying to sell them for more all the time but I'm not hearing that they are getting their asking price (excluding ebay lunacy). I hear of factory sixes going for more like $6k - $8k for a good project* and well maintained original cars rarely and barely getting over $12k.

*A good project is a complete running car that needs to be gone through, not a basket case.

I ain't no Bruce Anderson, just repeating what I hear from our part of the country. Besides I couldn't buy anything without having Bradholio inspect it and give it his blessing first. I see him too often and he'd never let me live it down smash.gif

That statement coincides with my vision of reality as well. Absolutely immaculate restored cars are going for $20k, give or take. And that seems to be hit or miss. Good to pretty nice drivers can be had for $10-14k.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 18 2004, 04:44 PM

I must be looking in the wrong places. I've been keeping an eye out for the past 2 years for fun and hardly seen anything $10-14K.

case in point, this is what I would consider a nice original driver.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2467234941&category=6430

not sure what it will go for, but I am guessing $16k+.

BTW...jim, your car does look nice for $12k.

Posted by: Gint Mar 18 2004, 05:43 PM

That car gets bonus points for not having a boatload of undercoating all over the bottom side and being pretty clean overall. If it's rust free, it's a deal at $13-14k. That's as high as I would go based on what I see and read in the ebay ad.

We could argue about this all day. Wait and see what it sells for. And remember that a LOT of ebay 914 deals have fallen through lately anyway.

I read through the ad again. If I were in the market, I might go as high as $15K for that car. IF the paint is in fact original and IF it really does have a limited slip and IF it doesn't have any rust, as stated. All of this would have to be confirmed on a PPI by someone I could trust.

You won't see many 914/6 cars that haven't been restored that are in as good of condition as that car is. It's the exception.

I was behind for several weeks. It took me longer than I thought to get the welder wired into the new shop. The tub was ready for dipping ages ago but the door bars where not welded in and then the dipper wasnt ready for it. Finally the planets aligned and we should have a dipped tub ready for repair very soon. Mark shot pics of it on the trailer but I dont think he has posted them yet. I'm personally very close to finishing up some lengthy projects. This will allow me to focus on some of the new projects that have arrived.

Hang in there Gint. We are now starting to feel at home in the new place. Air compressor gets wired in this weekend.

OK, so the junk in my car can't top that. But I think you get the idea. Someone riveted in a panel behind the battery, all the way around and down into the hell hole. Below the engine shelf even. Some of it is fiberglass. Then they dumped a bunch a bondo on top. Whether someone else can be more creative or not, it qualifies as a mess in it's own right.

You got that one right! Apparently, the filler like stuff inside the tail light area was disturbed by the sandblaster and some of it fell out. This allowed rusting to start underneath. The paint that Brandon put on bubbled up twice before he discovered what the problem was. He treated everything underneath with Rust-Mort, welded and body worked in a patch, and repainted everything. Now it looks great - just like the left side. No bubbles this time. You can't tell there was ever a problem there.

I've got some digital pictures at home of this area after the final repair. I'll repost them on my own thread tomorrow.

Posted by: mikey May 26 2004, 09:47 PM

You're welcome! Your tub looked very nice all clean and primed. I just went through this whole thread today for the first time. Our cars had similar problems. My rust didn't get to the longitudinal though. My right rear suspension mounting had been rusted away and badly repaired. So it had to have major surgery in that area. I also had some damage to the left front nose area.

Once I figure out how to post pictures here I'll start my own restoration thread. I've taken digital pictures of the whole restoration so far.

Posted by: SP9146 Jun 14 2004, 10:15 PM

That's the way to do it Gint! You will get evey rust hole this way and have a perfect car! What color and brand of paint? base / clear or single stage? How are you going to restore the seam sealer, did you take or have before shots of factory original?

My two cents worth: screw the seam sealer, it is nasty stuff and traps water to form new rust. See pictures of the seam sealer I removed that looked good on the outside and was rusting at the seam on my "Restoration Part Trois" thread. ar15.gif

I'm assuming the paint will end up being some kind of PPG product since the primer is PPG DP40 (according to PPG's web site: D834 DP40 , a chromate-free epoxy primer which provides a high degree of adhesion both to bare metal and a wide range of plastics.) But I need to get the painter (dlpenserini, aka Brandon) to have a look at this thread. In fact I need to talk to him directly. He and MarkD are doing the rust/body/paint work. The color will be the factory color for the car, tangerine. As for the seam sealer, not sure yet what will happen there.

As for before pictures, go backwards in this thread. It's loaded with 'em.

Fender is on... looks great. I tried to take pics with a "real" camera but mine kept giving me a system error. I think it's just a low battery issue. Floor is out and the new one is going in today. Everything looks really clean.

I helped Troy upload that zip file so, the pics are from the same bad camera (just not great in low light) but they're 800 by 640 or something like that.

I'll try to get some shots nmaybe later today once the floor is in.

They can be made by a competent body guy. They're not that intricate. In my case, I had a donor tub. Look at the fenderless pic above. There is a close up of the driver's side cowl corner . That on was repaired instead of replaced.

Mike, Eric

Actually the cowl area is the least of my problem areas right now. I was just curious what the replacement part looked like. The rust on the cowl area on my car is actually around the lower right windshield chrome area.

What are you using to remove your fenders? The areas look pretty clean and smooth where the spott welds were. Do you use some kind of bit in a drill? I bought a couple from Eastwood and would like to know if there is any trick to using them.

I do have a question off this topic though. How do you remove the hooks on the inside above the upper seat belt mount? For the clothes hangers to hang on. I'm stripping everything off the body and I don't want to destroy the padding around that area since it's in pretty good shape.

I don't really know what troy used for certain. I have a spot weld cutter, but you can use an ordinary drill bit. Do a google search for a spot weld cutter. In fact, you can do a search on this site as it's been discussed before.

Those plastic covers lift straight up and the metal bracket underneath has a phillips head screw holding it on. Really simple once you know that bit of info.

Posted by: restore2seater Nov 11 2004, 11:20 AM

I've noticed that most of the repo places don't sell fenders. Most of the other body panels and frame pieces I need (longs, rockers, floor pans...) are available. Whats the best way to get front and rear fenders?
And no, I can't buy another car as a donor. Aggravated the wife too much already with my Challenger and now the 914.

Posted by: Gint Nov 11 2004, 03:51 PM

Donor tub. I have a left rear quater in really nice shape. Again, it's a couple of months from being available.

Posted by: restore2seater Nov 11 2004, 04:05 PM

Well I definitely need a right side rear fender but until I do some more diggin into the rest of the car I don't know about the left side. The front fenders have some DA marks showing through the paint and what looks like some bondo that wasn't featherd out to well. Probably PO work done at home rather than at a body shop. I would be interested in the left side rear though. And any other parts thats in good condition.

At this point if I had half a brain I should just part it out and find a better choice to restore but in central Illinois everything around here is going to have rust from the 70's.

I tried to remove that hooks above the seat belt the way you said and it won't move. Maybe I'm not being clear as to what I am trying to remove. These are attached on the inside about 2 inches up from the seat belt retractor. Their plastic and I assume they are used to hang clothes on. Although the location of the hooks makes me wonder how this could be done and still be able to see out the side windows.

Gint nailed it in his previous post. Take a flat-head and lightly pry up around the base and they should begin to lift like he said. Slide them up and you're good to go at the "actual" bracket that's under those covers.

Posted by: restore2seater Nov 11 2004, 08:07 PM

When you wrote "pry up" I took that literally. I took a screwdriver like you said and pryed out away from the side and that made it possible to pry up. I guess it was just a case of terminology. Thanks for the help.

The factory used undercoat much like this Wurth product that you see applied here. Then it's painted body color over the top of that. I could be wrong (I'm sure someone will correct me if necessary), but I don't believe the factory ever applied black undercoat on top of the paint in the the wheel well or pan areas. All of the cars you see like that have been "improved" by some owner somewhere.

Now to open up my mouth and let my ignorance shine.....

How do you get primer and paint coverage on the inside of the tunnel and the heater tubes ???????

That is great Mike. I remember dropping the front suspension out of it at Brads shop. Completely different looking! It looks juicy IPB Image

The tunnel is easy enough, inside the longs just got primer when they were open. Now they are mostly sealed up. No way you're gonna get paint in there. The factory didn't either.

Mike, It's amazing. I remember just a short time ago, lifting your tub onto that flatbed trailer in pieces and all undone.

Nice to see it getting done the right way. IPB Image

Congrats on a job well done and looking foward to the finish.

Bee-U-ti-ful..... Wow Mike, it is looking great...

BTW, I assume this was the step of spraying the interior and underneath and the outside body will be painted separately, along with the doors and hoods? (I noticed the masked off areas...). Are you going to paint the top or leave it the factory black?

Congrats for doing the restoration the right way. Hope your wife finds another job soon.

I'm sure that is going to be a very tedious, time consuming, nervous, careful, process. But, hell, putting it all back together is the fun part. /peter

Yes, and no.

1) Non-polish areas have been painted as you said. Exterior panels will be done next with special effort applied to body work and paint polishing. Couldn't wait to show off the tangerine paint though. IPB Image

2) You mean the targa top? It will be factory black. I'm initially going to powder coat or anodize black the roll bar and sail panel trim (I have an extra set), as well as the aluminum seal channels on the A and B pillars. Basically any stainless or aluminum that is against a large field of black anywhere on the canopy. Make sense?

Yo, local guys! Thanks! We'll have an unloading party when I get it home boys.

I just got back from a conjugal visit with my tub. I couldn't help touching it. All of that smooth shiny paint instead of crusty, rusty panels. If I could have hugged it, I would have. Is that wrong?!?!

Nasty day at work today. It doesn't help when they start talking about firing the biggest slacker - amongst 14 people who are to busy to slack much at all anyway - to "motivate" the others, it isn't a good idea to be surfing 914world.com on the job.

I haven't seen it myself since two weekends back. Troy has taken a few insurance jobs to pay the bills also. I keep telling him, The longer it takes you to finish, the better my chances of decent weather to haul it back home. So no rush."

It's gettin there. There will lots of updates to this thread when it gets close to done.

Dipped and epoxy primed immediately afterwards. Single stage. If you want any more detail than that, you're gonna have to go look at the first 22 pages. wink.gif

Please excuse the stupid question but I've been wondering about it for a long time and haven't really had the chance to ask someone who's actually dipped a car.

When you acid dip a car, the solution goes all over the place, inside and behind, in areas that will never see the light of day and that you also won't be able to get to with primer unless you dip the car in primer (i.e. inside the windshield frame, the longitudnals, etc.). Since you don't dip prime a car, how do you prevent the windshield frame and the rest of these areas from rusting from the inside out?

BTW, GREAT PAINT.....WOW!!!!!

Posted by: McMark Mar 19 2005, 11:23 PM

I've heard of places that dip in a zinc bath.

IMHO, it's not really necessary unless you're planning on driving your car underwater. Those areas might get superficial surface rust, but without a significant source or moisture they're not going to rust significantly. It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

Posted by: CptTripps Mar 20 2005, 12:10 AM

I agree with the 'writing checks' thing. I think I'll be doing it that way next time!

Speaking of next time: I'll be dipping the tub on my next 914 (whatever engine I end up with)

Just seems like a MUCH better place to start. This paint removal is for the birds!

Did you paint that yourself in the driveway/garage?

Cut apart a 914 sometime. biggrin.gif Those areas "that will never see the light of day" don't tend to rust. As Mark said, they get some superficial surface rust, but nothing that ends up structural.

I'm writing the checks, remember? Troy's shop is behind his house. He has a rather large garage attached to the house though in which one side is setup for exclusive use as a paint booth.

IF I ever do this again, it will be soda blasted and not acid dipped.

Posted by: rhodyguy Mar 21 2005, 09:11 AM

there are a number of areas that have 2,3, and maybe more layers of metal sandwiched together. the raw ends got sealent smeared over them to close and seal the gap. my guess is the dip method would remove all of it. you would be leaving lots of exposed seams(many you couldn't get to now) for the rust to do its thing all over again, in areas that were fine previously.

rhodyguy answered my question...thats all I was looking for...

Posted by: Gint Mar 23 2005, 05:50 AM

Sorry, I just didn't want to yak it to death here in my progress thread. I like the soda blast because it's non-caustic, and unlike sand, the leftovers can be rinsed away and dissolved with water. So you won't have acid seepage, or sand flying around in the foreseeable future after your resto is complete.

But, what the hell? Live and learn right?

I'll guarantee ya'll... that's as Tangerine as it gets. I followed the color match process. Troy is neurotic about that kinda stuff. wacko.gif

My original "Canary Yellow" was found under the headlight cover. It took nearly a week to get it just right. Jim Chambers can weigh in on that being Canary Yellow...

Gint's paint "really" went on well (only 3-4 big runs). w00t.gif

Seriously, Troy was really pleased with the way it laid out. I'll bet he's blocked it out by now. I'll try to stop by with the the Nikon today. This tub will be stunning.

Andy, shock towers were hand painted black with little care given to the process. That will be a fun one to match. I don't recall from mine but I'm nearly certain it was done "after" the suspension was set. I seem to recall paint on the mounts. Maybe someone can weight in with a picture of the -6 shock tower.

Who's next...? confused24.gif Qarl, how bout we bring that tub up here? Jim? Sean?

Troy and I were discussing a chop-top teener. We were talking about taking 1.5 to 2" out of it. I think it would be the cats-@ss. Who's game?

I think the camera lied somewhat in pics of the canary yellow six and Gint's tangerine. I agree that the recent tangerine pics don't look quite right. My yellow didn't look right in some of the pics either. It looks different and dead-on correct up close and personal. Eric and Troy do good work.

edit: just looked back, the posts on the 18th look a little too pink. The post on the 19th looks real tangerine to me.

You can't take pictures with two different cameras ('specially digi-cams) of an orange or red car and have them look the same. The same goes for viewing orange or red cars on two different computer monitors/video cards. That's just the way it is.

Talked to Troy today. The tub is basically for all intents and purposes - done. We have tentative plans for me to pick it up the weekend of 4/9-10. You gonna be around that weekend Eric?

I don't know why. Heavier, taller lighweight aluminum enclosed trailer vs. lighter, 4' shorter version that I built myself. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this thing across country. Especially if going across Wyoming on I80. Always windy.

Thanks Doug. Wait till you see some shots of the tub after I get it out of the trailer. wub.gif Suspension and seals first. The wiring harness will have to go back in after that and before much else does. Bits and pieces after that. Motor will get at least a top end refresh. Carbs are going to get a full rebuild and throttle shaft rebush. $$$ will be the limiting factor. The reconstruction will take at least all summer, and it could very well be much longer depending on availability of funds.

I can't friggin win with this tub and the weather. If I'm pulling it out of dry storage somewhere, you can pretty much count on some form of precipitation, usually snow.

But it really looks sweet!

Posted by: Gint May 1 2005, 10:35 PM

Alrighty then...

The modular ark comes apart. Shar helped me get the top off and the tarp underneath was holding a good deal of water. But none of it hit the tub!

Shar also helped me remove the walls and the nose cone. Too bad I sold off the trailer. This superstructure worked really well. I could have saved it all and used it for god know what.

Mine was done professionally. You don't have any reason to feel bad about your work. You did a great job. In fact after seeing the progress of some members own work lately, I'm kinda inspired to try it myself also. Somebody had a roller for sale... idea.gif

I'll be paying someone to prep my next tub. So it looks like we'll be trading places. This is one of those things I wanted to do ONCE. I don't mind the other stuff...putting back together is the fun part for me. But Body work and painting is NOT my strong-suit.

We haven't seen the sun around here for almost a week (seems that way anyway). When I picked the tub up it was cloudy and crappy. When I unloaded it from the trailer it was gloomy and snowing lightly off and on.

Working last night and late work tonight afforded me an opportunity to leave work this afternoon and come home. I wanted to see this tub in the sun so badly that I inched it out of the garage and down my sloped driveway by myself.

First time in the SUN!

How's that for timing. I'm ready to go on vacation again.

Too many other things to do and it was too stinky hot all through July. I've just started kinda pokin around on it again. Borke off one of the trans mounting studs in the new motor.

The paint shrunk a little and had to be sanded and buffed out again. It looks absolutely amazing!

Pretty nice weather today so I took the afternoon off. I could use a break.

I believe this is one of the oldest restoration threads on 914world. Might be time to resuscitate it. Lots of memories in this thread. Good times... Has it really been 8 years since I took this thing apart? If I ever get the new garage organized I will finally have some room to start on this project. Appreciate that Joe, but the I won't be sending a car off to either coast again any time soon.

Keeping your project in a 18x20 box loaded with every other piece of junk you own while raising three kids can really put a damper on your 914 project progress. Those in a similar situation will no doubt understand. I have room now, but doesn't it figure that now I have a 50+ hour a week job. But without a doubt, it'll get some action this summer for sure.

Make some time for it! Send the kids off to Grandma's for a month along with the wife and work on the car with friends, drink lots of beer, BBQ some ribs and make some progress. beer3.gif

I appreciate the thought. As soon as you start doing my work Geoff I'll start on that program. I was at the office from 7 am to 9 pm yesterday (Saturday).

Was this thread started somewhere back eons ago?? Stone Age?? LOL

I do remember this car and the thread including the great adventure driving through a snow storm. Snow storm, hell, it was a down right blizzard!!!!

I totally enjoyed every event Mike has gone through concerning this car and I just know someday in the future it will be completed. It caused me to start a replica 914-Sixer project which is now on the road, not completed, but running and licensed. I do know how everything seems to take precident over car projects.

Congratulatons on the project thus far and please post to it whenever so we can be informed.

Great Job thus far!

Only a few days shy of it's 10 year anniversary! biggrin.gif That has to be close to a record for a documented build thread. I think 2013 should be the year Mike. biggrin.gif

I was thinking about that the other day. If you had a clean tub, and absolutely every part needed, how long do you think it'd take 5-6 914 guys to get the car on the road? Could it be done in a weekend? Day? Afternoon?

That's be a blast though.

Hi Mike,
I was wondering about your 914-6 project. We all wish we had a 914-6 in our garage. Don't rush the project.popcorn[1].gif
