914World.com _ 914World Garage _ battery tray questions from newbie

Posted by: weener101 Apr 27 2011, 02:46 PM

Is there some type of rubberized seal that goes on the right body side of the hell hole that the back side of the battery tray sits on? Mine is pretty gone and hard to make out what it looked like originally...maybe a horizontal piece of metal covered by rubber and screwed to the right rear fender inside? also...probably dumb question but what is the cigar box like thing that is clamped to the forward edge of he battery tray? Also, is battery tray hardware available..ie) bolts/screws etc? thanks. Dave

Also...do people prefer the Optima battery ? Does it fit and clamp normally with the original foot clamp? is there a specific model # ?? thanks. Dave

there is no seal..just metal.
The box is the ECU for your Fuel injection.
All the hardware is available from AutoAtlanta.com
Battery type 42...and people do like optimas so you get no more acid.

Try to get the Optima-specific clamp when you buy one.
While you are at the store, order the 914 Haynes manual. It's pretty good for instructions, very good for figuring out what parts do what.

Replacement battery tray, support, original clamp & bolt are all still available at several of the online sources you see here (AA is one noted above), as well as for the Optima battery & the clamp for it. There are also lightweight dry cell batteries out there which a lot of folks use. Here are some sources for both.

Note that the Optima is a gel type wet cell, and Odyssey is a drycell - but both are lead-acid batteries & therefore both do have acid, just not in the liquid wetcett type of the standard car batteries.

Also get an acid pad for the tray under the battery, as well as protectant to spray on on the tray.

These are both sold many places - both online & bricks-n-mortar stores.

Thanks to all..think I've got it licked. Installed an optima and powdercoated the tray etc. Appreciate all the helpful suggestions. Dave
