914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Jukka's 914-6

Posted by: OmaPossu May 2 2011, 12:29 AM

Hello,
This is a thread about late hours in my garage trying to get 1970 914-6 back to life.

There are already hundreds pics in here:

One question, what are these holes for? Spot welding?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is those holes are for when they dipped the bodies at the factory.

Posted by: carr914 May 2 2011, 06:26 AM

I've got a box of the covers for those holes somewhere

Are the flares steel or fiberglass? What is the serial number? I am constantly trying to find my old one.

Add the serial number to the database please!

Then to the biggest problem of this car. Drivers side front corner has some signs of past accident. It's been repaired badly. It's more than inch up and and bent little right too. That can be taken care with "celeste bench".
Front boot floor has some bad crinkles (right word?) and inner fender is not right shape. How to take care these?
Some pics there: http://harrasteet.1g.fi/kuvat/OmaPossu+II/Disassembly/Front+boot/Problem/

Posted by: SirAndy May 3 2011, 01:50 PM

The celette bench will get the basic attachment points back to factory specs.

The wrinkled sheet metal will need to be replaced or hammered back to where it belongs.

I'm in the same boat with my original /6. Tons of sheet metal that needs replacing or massaging. A good automotive body guy will know how and what to do.

Yes, that's the chassis number. Also usually written with crayon on the backside of the dash sub-frame.

Rear Trunk, correct - that is the Chassis #

I did research on this over the years and it does have the correct numbers for a 1970 914-6 as it is discribed in the link Andy posted!

Notice the chassis number is 2045 and the vin number is 2344 so they are within 299 chassis!

Behind this link is pic of two kind of front brake heat shields.

Which is right for -70 914-6?

Posted by: sixnotfour Nov 13 2011, 09:40 AM

the left one

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Nov 13 2011, 11:20 AM

agree.gif
It is the one on the left and the part# is 914.351.801.00!

The one in the parts catiloge only shows 5 holes around the center in the photo but I would guess that is just to represent the differences!

Posted by: Rob-O Nov 13 2011, 11:33 AM

The holes in the floor are definitely for the arms of the spot welder to get into position. For instance, think about the center tunnel and how it's welded to the floor pan. Also the cross members were spot welded and those holes would've been used for that as well.

Our 914's were never dipped for paint (or anything else). That technology wasn't widespread in factories until after the 914 was out of production.

One question (not my car), are all 2,0l four cylinder 914:s with D-jetronic? With extra point's in distributor?

Posted by: Dave_Darling Nov 27 2011, 06:51 PM

Originally, yes.

Only the 1.8s were not D-jet from the factory.

When we talked about it I was sure it was changed due to the serial number on the trans!

Here is one of the e-mail conversations
2011/1/26 Jeff Tuck <jeffs9146@yahoo.com>

I do not know anything about the original transmission! It was swapped out before I got it and the person who sold it to me didn't know anything either! I would try to get a COA and see if the transmission number is listed! There was a guy keeping track of all 914-6's in the USA and I spoke with him once. He told me the car was sold in Palo Alto so you may be able to call the dealership and get some history?? (just a thought!)

Don't forget to put fluid in the transmission before you install it!

Yes, so it was!
Sorry, english is not my main language! I'll ask another way, if I have tail sift gearbox can I change it to side shift without changing transmission case (shell)?

I'll asked Finnish Porsche dealer to find out my transmission number but nothing come out. Have to ask direct from Zuffenhausen.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Jan 28 2012, 10:13 AM

Yes you can!

You need a side shift tail cone with parts, shifter plate, shifter, shifter bar and bushings.

I'm sure the good Dr. has more detail but that still wont make it a numbers matching transmission!

The number on the 914-6 transmission starts with 914/01!

Thats good to know! Now I can tell my friend, who bought my ex 914, that he can change that crappy old tail shift to side shift without buying new transmission! Or would it be easier/cheaper to buy used side shift trans?

Posted by: Dave_Darling Jan 28 2012, 11:33 PM

Easier, yes. Cheaper? Not sure.

To change from the tail-shift to the side-shift setup, you not only need to change the transmission (or modify the tail-shift one), but you also need a complete later gear-shift linkage, including all of the rods and even the gear shift lever itself, plus the motor mount bar and all of the mounting hardware for that bar.

Looks easy !! 1-2weeks work.
I think you should epoxypaint the body as soon as possible.

The oiltank is cooper coated so it will not rust.
why don't you powdercoat it? Satin black.

Its soda blasted so it is not so hurry with painting.

Do I have to take copper away before powdercoating? Its rust free and copper layer is solid. What paint would stay on copper?

I had my oil tank specialty coated with a covering (gloss black) that helps PULL heat out or a distrubtion heat coating. It looked very good and in concept it can't hurt to help pull some degrees out from the oil.
I think the color came out nicely and I'm all for using new technology on these cars that was not around in 1970.

Hi, seems to be that my project is moving to paint shop this week smile.gif smile.gif
Question: how to paint bottom and inside fenders? How have you done it or how was it done by factory?

Posted by: Socalandy Jun 11 2013, 06:22 PM

my -6 after media blasting showed me that it was undercoated and then painted body color. My thread has a lot of pictures of what we did.

You mentioned earlier you wanted to get your COA to search for your transmission number. After several conversations with them I was told that info was not recorded on the Cardex and was not on my COA. Your making great progress and congrats on saving another 914 first.gif always ready for more progress pictures!!

Has -70 914/4 and /6 same relay board cover?

Ersatzteilnummer: 914.610.111.13

Posted by: Dave_Darling Jun 25 2013, 06:41 PM

The catalog in PDF calls for one of those for all 914s, but I thought it only fit the 914-4 models? It may be that the -4 version supersedes the -6 version even if it isn't quite right.

I do know the relay board is different. I could be wrong about the cover, though.

Posted by: sixnotfour Jun 25 2013, 07:09 PM

The early covers have a hole for a hold down screw later do not

I bought it so soon we know does it fit to -6 reley board. I'll let you know.

Posted by: 914Sixer Jun 26 2013, 07:05 PM

-4 and -6 covers are the same until Jan 72 when the reel type seat belts were installed. Jan 72 on the covers were slanted in the front to miss the seat belts anchor bracket on the rear wall. Dave is correct that the relay board are completely different.

Vehicle-Ident.-No.: 9140432344

Dear Mr. Pohjalainen,

Thank you for your e-mail from 1 September 2013.

Having checked our records we can inform you that your vehicle was originally painted silver metallic.

The complete vehicle, including the underbody and the wheel housing was undercoated. These parts were additionally equipped with a PVC coating, a protection against road stone and droning.

We hope that the above information is helpful and wish you ongoing pleasure with your Porsche 914.

I believe body color is the way they left the factory. However, it appears that the color was not applied as heavily or evenly across the bottom. When mine is sprayed it will go body color as nicely as the exterior.

Here are the original photos of your interior. This is the original. If you want "original" sound proofing you would want to replace with the tar floor stuff. Here in the US you can get something similar in the roofing section at our local hardware store. I didn't want anything that would retain moisture so I went with Dynamat on the floors and back firewall and then put the original back pad and sound pad back in.

Here is a recent discussion of the topic.http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296743&hl=floor++tar

Yes I replaced the rear with Poly bushings. I couldn't find any stock ones. You could try the Porsche Dealer, I hear they are starting to make classic parts again.

The chassis looks great. The car will be louder without soundproofing but you could always add it later if you can’t bare to cover up the fresh paint just yet.

You don’t have to cover up all the paint. Just the large, flat sections that can vibrate. It can be made to look nice and neat.

I think you are asking for a lot of noise without doing something on the firewall and floors. I will in my car and suggest you use some type fo a self-sticking sound insulation pad, like Dynamat, to go on the floor and firewall. Perhaps inside the door shells too to keep them from sounding "tinny". http://www.dynamat.com/automotive-and-transportation/automotive-restoration/dynamat-xtreme/ Chassis looks very nice. Glad you are moving forward.

My car has zero sound deadening or carpeting (or windows) and it is extremely loud -
earplugs advisable. I'm thinking about getting some removable rubber floormats or something for the rare times when I drive it on the street to shows etc. A rear trunk carpet kit might make a difference also. I would want some reasonable insulation in a street car.
