914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Meet Froggy

Posted by: tod914 Jun 22 2011, 05:13 PM

Just arrived this afternoon from Bethel Park, PA. Absolutely filthy! But.. the car is one owner and only 16,000 miles on her. With alot of elbow grease it should clean up real well. Never seen one so original. Has the original Michi XZ radials, fuel lines that were replaced by the dealer durning the HO campain back in the day, etc. The owner John, hasn't driven her in about 8 years. Certianly needs some TLC to bring her back to her former glory and make her road worthy, but should be quite looker when done. Happy to document anything you guys need for the Originality forum. Thanks again for doing the PPI Bud. Bud and I added her to the Vin section.

Posted by: Gint Jun 22 2011, 05:44 PM

Beautiful. What a score.

If you're going to drive that thing, put a different set of wheels and new tires on it. Save the originals, but they aren't worth risking driving on. They're ready to dry up a blow away.

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jun 22 2011, 05:45 PM

I'd have to say... put the chrome rings on those and those wheels look damn good. Especially for stock steelies.

Posted by: tod914 Jun 22 2011, 05:46 PM

lol Eric.. thanks for the compliments guys. The owner John, purchased it new in 1974. It's a 2.0, w/rear window defrost, dark brown interior. He had the dealer take off the alloy wheels because at the time, he didn't care for them. Thought he said it was like a $800 difference in price back then. Will have to get a COA and see what it had from the factory. Has the Coco mats in it, and he also put on seat covers 2 months after purchasing the car. He basically just used it to goto Lake Erie from Pittsburg on weekends. Along with an occasional Jersey shore trip. Unfortunetly, the window sticker, literature, and spare parts were tossed out by his wife. Has the tools and manual still. Could tell this was John's baby over the years. I plan on keeping in touch with him and sending him photos of car shows etc. Very nice guy. Here's a link from Bud's PPI that he did for me.

Are steel rims available new? I'd like to follow Gint's suggestion. I was hesitant on driving it on the hiway home, from the pickup location. Made it back without incident. Think the fuel lines scared me more than the tires.

Very nice find!

Interesting story about the wheels too. When I picked up my 72 1.7, the car lacked the 5 1/2" steelies. That was August of 1972. I made an issue of it & the dealer offered me a set of 5 Fuchs (the 73 2.0's were in stock then) from one of the 2 liters, for $300. I didn't care for the at the time & turned him down & demanded my proper steelies, which I eventually got. I sometimes think it was a mistake to not take the offer, but would have had to make a lot of explanations through the years - and probably lost some concours'.

Can't wait for more pic's!
Pat

Nice find Tod! drooley.gif

I suppose if the COA lists the Fuchs 2L wheels, then your "official" wheels will be those, with these steelies as the driving set.

I still have to circle back on those Dunlop SP57 165HR15 repops with the guy to see if there's enough market interest yet, or if I have to dig deeper with the 911/912, Alpha, Fiat & BMW crowd.

I guess you'll need 2 sets of 5 now! biggrin.gif

So is the red 73 2L sold now, or are you just expanding the fleet? confused24.gif

Hi Tod,

Congratulations on purchasing this beautiful CW original 914. The car was listed in Panorama a few months ago & I called the older 80ish. guy for details. He put a lot of love into it and he was a proud owner that kept it original condition. I thought about going to Pitts to look at it but, didn't have the time knowing it would go fast. I knew someone looking for a low milage car would snap it up & I am glad it was you!! You got a one in a million find. smilie_pokal.gif

It reminds me of this one on the cover - except it's got the Beige interior instead of Brown. This cover actually got me to really like this Delphi Green Metallic/Beige color combo! drooley.gif

> the color is a bit off in this pic, but it's dead on for the real cover!

I may have a set of four that you can refinish for the DD wheels.

Let me see what I have that matches.

Last year I bought my '74 in original condition. It was last driven in '76-77 before I bought it. It only had 30K miles.
The original Michi looked good (but dry) when I started the first drive but, I reached the wire reinforcement after 2 days!
Replaced them with new tires and never looked back.

DON'T DRIVE THEM!

Posted by: budk Jun 23 2011, 07:47 AM

Hi Tod. I'm glad she made it to you safely and even more glad that you are happy with the condition.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get a hold of the seller (my fault) in time to arrange another photo session, so you may hear from me in the future with a request for a particular photo.

Enjoy her, she is a beaut!

Bud, I just started stripping out the interior. I'll take detailed photos of all the bolts, nuts, washers, and what goes where. I'll set up webpage for it when I get time. Maybe the reference will also be helpfull for Carrie, who is doing the nut & bolt kits. Don't hesitate to ask if you need some reference. If you could PM me your last name too.. Only have your address. I'll get something in the mail for you tomorrow smile.gif Thanks again.
Tom, I found a nice local storage warehouse close by. They only take in Porsches and Ferraris. The red car will go there for the time being. Also have to drop it off to John and Ray Patterak to fix a few chips and scratch marks prior to long term storage. Could use some input on tires for the new one smile.gif I want to stay with 165s. Michelelin XZX @ $180 a pop are too pricey.. besides the car has ZX tires on it. So, whatever goes on it XZX or something else, won't be factory correct anyway.
Again, thanks for the kind words folks. I was very lucky to get this one. I'll document the "resto" if you want to call it that, the best I can. All the scuff marks and scratches on the exterior cleaned up nicely. Rich keep me posted on the rims. Thanks for looking. I'm checking w/Porsche to see if new are available.

How's the cleanup going Tod?

Posted by: tod914 Jun 26 2011, 08:03 AM

Lot of work Bud. Pulled the interior and spent the last two days removing spray adhesive that was everywhere. Taking pictures as well. Have my parts list together for the local P dealer. I should have some shots posted in a week or two.
After it was washed, I managed to get all the scuff/scratch marks out. Will be really nice when it's done. Have you had a chance to do any work on your car?

Nice car! When I first saw the thread title, I thought of the license plate on the front of my car (which is very far removed from CW):

That's funny Geoff. I was talking to the original owner yesterday. He said that one of his students gave him a South American tree frog to go with his car. Think he said the frog lasted about a year before it croaked.
