You driving around our roads....get steel wheels.
Many dune buggy 4 lug steel wheel options that get pretty wide.
I think one of the guys here...the guy who does tile work...trekkor has a few sets of steel wheels, custom width, and cheap.

914/VW Air-cooled 4 lug hubs are 4 on 130 (early Rabbits & Golfs were 4 on 100)
Pick up a Hot VW and check the ads in there, that is your best bet to find the 4 lug rims you want..
Here is one style of the steel wheels that can be found in the Mag, these were 7X15s but also came in 8s.
A set of 8X15s with 225/50/15s work well on flared 4cyl teeners & look good..

Paul i'll find out tomorrow at work what options are available for wide 4-lugs, since we do quite a few dune buggy builds.

A set of 14x7 BBS rims on http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1132669 might work with the correct offset/spacers.
