914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Why are the plug wire boots 2 sizes?

Two are long and 2 are short. I figure there's a reason.

On 1.7 & 1.8 engines the long connectors are needed to reach the front plugs thru the sheetmetal. Few sets come with short connectors for the 2.0 914 engines.

Distance from the engine tin to the spark plugs is different front to back ... shades.gif

Also if you look at the tip of the connectors they are marked with an amount of resistance (you can verify this with an ohm meter)

the long and short ones have different amounts of resistance
I always figured it was to compensate for the different lengths of wire to reach front-vs-back

Well, anyone who has tried to put 2.0 wires on a 1.7 or 1.8 knows. ;-)

It's hard to find a wire set with 4 short tips to fit a 2.0. I keep a box of the short ones around to change them out for the long tips. Ray
