914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914R build thread revisited

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 2 2011, 04:23 PM

Some of you may have seen my earlier build thread on the 914club site. In a nutshell I have a 73 2.0 that I converted to a six in 2003. It's now heavily modified and race-prepped, powered by a stout 2.7 twin-plug engine.

The car currently weighs 1988lbs without fuel or driver; my POC minimum class weight with gas and driver is 2209lbs. It's still narrow-bodied and I am running 16x7 Fuchs with 205/45 Hoosiers. As you might guess, the car is significantly grip-limited and traction-limited in the rear especially. It basically tears the tread off R6's within 6 run sessions or so.

Here is its current state:

I just dropped it off at a local shop, about to dive into:

- Tangerine Racing steel flares, front/rear
- Sheridan 6" f/g rear spoiler
- Rollcage triangulation to suspension pickups
- Possibly other chassis bracing
- GT headlight lifts or remove lights completely
- Repaint car (TBD how extensively)
- RSR finish Fuchs 16x8's up front, 9's in rear
- New graphics/decals

One upcoming decision is whether to keep the sail vinyl or go body color without vinyl. I've always liked the factory vinyl and bright trim look but could go either way on this.

The work could start as soon as Tuesday and I'll post updates and pics as I get them. This is not going to be a CW rotisserie sort of project since it's a race car, so progress should happen quickly and I plan to run the POC Laguna Seca event towards the end of August.

Cheers,

Remove the vinyl. You will save 8oz of weight. I'll be watching!

LOL, good point, I will be trying to keep the weight down as obviously the bigger wheels/tires will add significant weight, as will any cage tubes or chassis braces added.

Ditching the headlights, motors and turn signal buckets will help a bit. I'm also probably going to swap my one late door (there must be a PO story behind that) for an early door.

There's not much else that can be removed short of drilling or cutting-out metal such as the rear trunk floor or targa hoop, and I don't want to do that right now.

So a couple of you have already discovered that my car is at Kundensport in Camarillo for the body/paint work. I will be posting pics as available.

Here are the wheels I've been hanging onto until I had flares to stuff them under. I will be putting Hoosier R6's on them.

You could just paint the sail panels like I did on mine. I added a 1/4" chrome tape to act as the trim. From 10' you can't tell it's paint.

I remember when I was first building I ran into your flikr account photos and was in love with your ride! But I must ask why steel flares on a race car? Have you seen the full FG quarters & fenders that QRS fiberglass has? They are already flared and with chassis stiffening it would be worth it for weight reduction. I think you would lose something like 130-150#s... None the less I anticipate your renovations you have a very nice car!

4 steel GT flares weigh around 20-25#S so 130-150# savings, even from the whole panel, is probably really optimistic.

Plus, you are removing metal when you add flares so the total weight gain is less than the flares weigh. It's the bigger wheels and tires that add some weight.

Posted by: J P Stein Jul 9 2011, 09:56 AM

The Fuch are light.....a bathroom scale will show that the 8 X 15 inchers are around 12 lbs ea. Those other things look heavy. In my experience to get a 16 incher that approaches those weights you need to go to a 3 piece wheel with a spun rim. My 10 X 16s weighed 11 lbs each but they are delicate....as tire mounters have found out.

Tis a slippery slope you are contemplating. Personally I go with 15 inch wheels, 8 inch in front & 10 inch in back. 225 X 45 & 275 X 35 tires they would keep the ride height down. The standard flares in back won't accommodate those rears but you have the HP to over power even those. OK, so I set up cars to suit available tires.....I've been on that slope.

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 9 2011, 10:04 AM

With the Tangerine Racing flares, you are not adding or removing metal so there should be no drastic effect on weight. I went this route because I like the 'stealth' factory-like appearance of them, since they are reworked original steel vs. something obviously tacked-on. With this car I decided I did not want to cut-off the majority of the body and do something like a Sheridan kit or other total body replacement; although, I did think seriously about that.

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 9 2011, 10:07 AM

JP - those Remotec wheels are nearly identical in weight to the same-sized Fuchs, believe it or not! I can no longer use smaller than 16" wheels due to the suspension mods (strut spindles) up front; also the DOT tire choices are rapidly dwindling in 15" and are still a little better in 16".

Posted by: J P Stein Jul 9 2011, 05:52 PM

OK, I thought you were talking race tires but your right, the available DOT tire selection sucks. I run 19mm raised spindles with just a few mods to clear the inside of the wheel....tis a near thing. Bigger wheels & tires are heavier (& taller) than the 15s. I guess it is whatever floats your boat.

Posted by: tscrihfield Jul 9 2011, 11:09 PM

Understood! I am a firm believer in you like what you like. Also, had no idea you were just working the original fenders... I am in even more anticipation to see it now! popcorn[1].gif And I know what you mean about the wheel size, I can't go below 17inches because how far I lowered my spindles!

In my race car building days I was obsessed with several things among which were low over all weight, low unsprung weight, & low CG of the whole car.
I jumped through a lot of hoops to get there without screwing up the the camber, toe curves....& bumpsteer, of course from the stock settings......I ain't smart enough to re-engineer the suspension to a better point than Porsche did. Due to some professional help with shock valving (& shitcanning the rubber bushings) & some fairly radical stiffening of the chassis (lots of room for improvement there) I feel I was reasonably successful. Any advice I offer is based on those obsessions plus the absolute need to have fairly compliant suspension to handle the bumps of several AX venues.

Reading your post, Chris, would lead me to believe your car is no longer going to be street legal (no headlights?). Your need for DOT legal rubber confuses me. Are you running some kinda spec series rubber that calls for some oddball wear rating? Hoosier makes DOT legal R&A6s and the available rubber is as good (better IMO) in 15 inch as 16 inch.

BTW, tscrihfield, *lowering* ones spindles is counter productive and would not effect wheel size. biggrin.gif Terminology counts.

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 10 2011, 09:38 AM

JP, you are correct, classification rules are the only reason I use DOT tires. Race tires would bump me another class with POC. It's a points-based system but I'm already topped-out in my current class once I add the wider wheels. I would love to try slicks sometime though.

Also, I have to run a minimum car weight and am already right on the line there.

FWIW many if not most of the competitive 911 guys down here have gone to 17's. I'm pretty sure that is for wheel selection as well as tires.

Posted by: J P Stein Jul 10 2011, 09:53 AM

A & R6s are race rubber I was talking about....not slicks. Are these
https://www.hoosiertire.com/rrtire.htm legal? Click on "specs".

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 10 2011, 10:00 AM

Yes, I've been using the R6 and predecessors for years. I can use any DOT tire...non-DOT slicks are where I can't tread for now (sorry).

Still can't go down to 15's without raising the spindles back up...

I guess the proper way to say it is "raising" the spindles to drop the car... dry.gif You got me on that one! I was a little tired when I posted last night...

But I honestly can't because I tried to install my 16" wheels and they hit the lower control arm due to spindle location. My 17" wheels have room but the 16s are a little too small...

BTW, Chris, is Sienfeld's collection still across the street?

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 10 2011, 08:54 PM

Ok, lowering the spindles back up. How's that.

Yup the collection is still there, at least the west coast portion. With that plus the VW-Audi design center next door, there are lots of cool cars to drool over.

The bodywork is officially underway! I dropped-off the larger Fuchs with fresh Hoosiers today, for test-fitting purposes, as well as spoilers etc.. The front Getty lid has been aligned and filled a tad, replacement door fitted, windshield and sail trim removed, and other stuff is also starting to come off. Next week the actual cutting/welding/sanding should commence.

Do not worry about your car, Galen is one of the best builders out there... He actually build my 914 and never had a problem... I'm working on my own version of a 914 RS... so I will put fiber glass pieces to drop 200lbs, will keep 2.0L FI but will try to get an exhaust system to get 10hp more... Galen rebuild the engine years ago with some nice tricks and installed a Carrera front end with a 914-6 rear plus all the suspension tricks that he knows about... the car handles great, I run super light Fuchs that are 15x7 all around... I will send you some pics of my build if interested... when you see Galen just tell him you came across Bill Boyd 914... he will go on from there! later and good luck and hope to see you at the next POC in Fontana.

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 25 2011, 12:59 PM

tavoman27, to clarify, Galen has done a bunch of suspension and brake work on this car lately but now it is at a different shop -- Kundensport -- for the body & paint work.

Here is the latest update as of this morning. The dis-assembly and fitting work is well underway (engine, seats, etc. still need to come out.).

Ed is concerned about the fit & finish of the rear flares but he is going to work on them some more before we consider "Plan B". The fronts are great. Nothing has been cut or welded yet, this is just test-fitting so far.

JP, here is some "hammered shit" for ya. It will get a lot worse before it gets better...

They look almost like Tangerine Racing flares.

That's cuz they are...should look sweet and last forever once finished, but doing this kind of metal work is not nearly as quick and painless as bonding or bolting-on some 'glass...

Chris,
Your car is going to look amazing! Cant wait to see this one done! Those flares are really giving your car an added bit of unique! beerchug.gif Cheers to you!

The flares are on! The right side is nearly paint-ready, the left side (shown) still rough. Clearance is just fine with the 245's on 9's and with the optimum offset wheels, 275's on 9's or even 10's should be doable.

Attached Image

The below pic of the front is still with the old 205 tire on a 7x16 wheel. I think I can fit 245's up front as well, but for starters I bought 225's to be safe.

The car is pretty close to paint now. The flares are installed, smooth as a baby's skin. Also the lids are fine-tuned for nice gaps, rear trunk floor rust repaired, doors prepped. Next week the engine will come out, and some new cage tubes welded-in. Then I suppose paint is next.

The rear flares look cool IMO. It's hard to really get a shot that shows the lines with the car in primer and shop lighting. The lips on the fronts seem a little larger than needed, but I'm sure I will get used to it. (The old 205's are back on the car in this pic.)

Love those flares! Really keep the original lines well. Doesn't jump out at you that they are custom. I hope to get those flares someday. Time to start saving I guess drooley.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Aug 29 2011, 12:16 AM

More progress. The tub and rollcage are sprayed, woohoo!. The other parts should be done tomorrow, then it goes back together.

The flares are subtle, depending on the angle and lighting. Those are 8's and 9's on the car now. There seems to be room for 9's and 10's, perhaps.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic.

Lookin' good, Chris.
Eye balling the front flares would seem to indicate that bigger front wheels would fit......I was able to get 10 X 16 under my hand hammered fenders but they were a bridge too far. I went back to 8 inchers due to scrub raduis problems (you would't like it).....9s *might* have worked.

Thanks JP. Since POC rules look at wheel width not tire size, and I already have two sets of 8's and 9's I will stick with that for now. However, the pic shows 225 front and 245 rear which I wanted to start with to play it safe on clearance.

I do think there is clearance to run 245 front and 275 rear (Hoosier R6) as I'd hoped, and if measurements back that up I will try that combination next.

The car should be home within days and at the track on 9/11 if the stars align in my favor.

Posted by: campbellcj Aug 29 2011, 10:00 PM

Another tire option would be a 'square' setup with 245's or 255's all around.

Apparently the car is done! I plan to pick it up Thursday morning assuming I can escape the office for a while.

Only a couple of minor things to sort-out, one being the graphics/decals scheme. I still have not figured-out a game plan on that. I may end-up not going with a vintage livery design as it's not really a GT replica or vintage car anyway...

If I say so myself, it looks badass! Ed and the Kundensport guys are really masters with metal and paint (and fiberglass too.)

The flares are really subtle, in fact basically invisible when looking dead-on from the side. However, as you can see there is a mean fatness from the rear or above view. Have to admit I'm still not 100% warmed-up to the front flares but I'm sure they will grow on me. I really like the look of the rears a lot. The good news is I should be able to run a square tire setup (245 Hoosier R6 front and rear) if I want to. Or, I can space out the fronts to widen the track a bit.

I will post some proper photos over the weekend. Here are a couple of awful iPhone shots (the weird coloration is due to the crap camera):

I forgot to mention, ultimately (in a couple weeks) it will have a Sheridan spoiler in back. I have the Sheridan deep front spoiler already, also repainted. The car looks clean with no spoiler in back, but I think it will really help on the track. Turn 8 at Big Willow is sketchy with no aero...

Thanks Chris! Sorry if I gave a misleading impression - there is nothing wrong with the front flares at all. I think I just need to stuff some more tire under them to balance things out aesthetically.

I spoke with Galen today and he's going to help me set it up with optimal custom spacers (or custom wheels ultimately), and perhaps I will be able to run a 255 or 265 'square' setup. I can't tell yet if 275's will fit in back but he will measure everything and has some test wheels/tires we can try for fitment.

I will take some pics at the track tomorrow, although right now the car looks pretty funny as it has the old skinny tires on it. (Posted about that on the Pelican board.) It could be worse - I get to burn up some 5 heat-cycle Hoosiers before I sell the old wheels.

I wasn't worried. biggrin.gif
I widened the front of my race car as much as the rear and, even though I like the shape, there is some empty space at the outside of the tires that I can't fill due to SCCA specifications.
OTOH, the stock 914 fenders leave a lot of space at the outside of the front wheels too.

Some people think the space needs to be filled for the car to look good but they neglect to consider the change in spring rate from wheel spacers on a McPherson strut/a-arm suspension.

Thanks! The lids are from Getty Design but the tie-down latches are just commodity parts I got from Pegasus. Some guys prefer the real NOS parts for factory or true replica/tribute cars, and those turn up from time-to-time on the Early 911S Registry or Pelican classifieds.

I have the info on the "R" taillights at home but there are definitely some earlier threads here on that topic.

Note that the body shop had to extensively modify and re-fit the fiberglass housings as they were crude to start with. They also come "some assembly required" i.e. you have to wire everything up yourself. Therefore it's not an inexpensive mod and probably not one I would do again, but I think the result looks cool.

I didn't get many pics yet. The car is back at Werks II now for various things including figuring-out the optimum spacers and studs for the new wheels/tires. It was also running crappy and down on power at the track last weekend, which I think is a carb/fueling issue.

I could have used more clearance in back as it turns out...no going back now though. I'm aiming to finish any significant dicking-around with this car by the end of this year and start looking towards (read: saving my nickels) the next project.

Quick update on the car. Unfortunately after two years of track use, we found 24% leakdown in cylinder #5. So, that is getting looked at now. The carbs are also going to be torn-down and optimized for race use (larger venturis and possible emulsion tube and jet changes.)

Other "while we're in there" stuff includes finishing the brake cooling, G2X data acq system and probably a trans cooler.

Thanks Steve. The deep front spoiler/splitter is from Roger Sheridan. I also have a rear spoiler from him that's not installed yet.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Unfortunately my engine is a sick puppy and the car will be down for a while longer and another $$$$ bill is coming. 2011 season is over for me. sad.gif

More evaluation and pricing is ongoing, but I'm basically facing 3 choices:

1) Replace only the totally unusable bits, put it back together and roll the dice
2) Also replace questionable bits and do some upgrades, such as more compression (pistons) and more aggressive cams
3) Swap-in a different engine and roll the dice

Technically selling the car with a hurt engine -- at a massive loss -- is a 4th option but that just ain't gonna happen.

Posted by: campbellcj Nov 17 2011, 11:47 PM

I went and visited the shop today. The top-end is mostly apart and parts being cleaned-up and inspected. The good news is the bottom end, heads and cams seem OK. Bad news is at least a couple cylinders, valves, guides, seats, 1 rocker and various other bits are not OK. The springs and retainers are fine but may be upgraded for good measure.

Waiting on price and availability for a few P&C options from Mahle before deciding which route to go. I would love to go 12.5:1 Mahle 2.8 "RSR" if I can afford it (that might warrant a cam change too), but it may be much more practical to put this thing back together as a 2.7 with new or good used cylinders and the existing 10.5:1 JE pistons.

The game plan should solidify next week - stay tuned...

Finally! After months of frustration I finally have my hands on the 92mm (2.8) P&C's to put my engine back together. Apparently Mahle only makes the less common stuff in batches every once in a while and once they're gone you are SOL until they decide to make more. They weren't planning to make any more 92mm stuff until this summer at the soonest.

I probably will not use these pistons as they're "only" 10.5:1 C/R and I want to go up to 12.5:1 or so ideally; getting pistons should not be a problem as it's the barrels that are made of unobtainium. I will probably save these pistons in case someday I want to put the car back to a more streetable configuration.

I also have one of these on the way. It's not an absolute necessity but is cool, and my current "S" red shroud is a bit damaged.

Attached Image

There are still some kinks with the bodywork to figure-out as well. The rear flares are too small to fit the optimal tires and the fronts have some strange geometry/clearance problem I don't fully understand yet (going to see in person this week). The solution to that may be going back down to 15" wheels/tires which would require re-modifying or changing the struts.

Posted by: hwgunner Apr 1 2012, 10:55 AM

I loved the way this car looked with the narrow body and the raw hoods.

But now??? I am not afraid to say it..... OMG!!!!!

Been down the weird front geometry/clearance road. Your front fenders now give you enough room to screw you into the ground....the quickest way to get there is by using spacers. Just because some tire wheel combo will fit doesn't mean it should be there. Case in point....see pic. Ayup, got em in there and made sure they cleared at full compression, lock, & droop. Made for a lost season of steering effort like a dump
truck and understeer.

Agreed JP. There are two main issues: (1) the 16" tires I have on there now are too tall and other options are very limited and (2) my strut spindles were raised so minimum 16" wheels are needed. We're kicking-around going down to 15's and using spacers to get the track and clearance right. I hope to finally have a solid game plan this week but am not super enthused about possibly not being able to use the effing spendy Weidman RSR Fuchs I bought...

Car looks incredible. Is it still streetable?

Posted by: J P Stein Apr 2 2012, 09:22 AM

The sad fact is that we must base our decisions on available tire sizes.
Width vs diameter of the available rubber is pretty well set across the range regardless of manufacture.

So, one needs to set up a car for tires.....not an ideal situation but everyone is in the same boat. Since you are now gonna have an excess of HP ( aren't light cars grand)
you need big sticky buns out back. Hoosier makes a 275 X 35 X 15 fits that bill nicely with a 23 inch diameter. But, whata' you gonna do up front? One would think a square set-up would be the cat's ass and this is where the weirdness sets in.
The proper wheel width for the above tire is 10 inches. Do that and scrub radius will have your ass (BTDT).......not enough backspace and no way to get the wheels inboard far enough. This may not be too bad on the track (other than heavy steering) but it's a killer for the tight corners in AX. An 8 inch wide wheel (a one inch improvement is scrub) cured that for me (with canti slicks) and someone is telling me that a 9 incher works for him with the 275s......this may even be true. At any rate, the 914 font end has it's limitations and this can be an expensive problem to work out.

Posted by: stuttgart46 Apr 2 2012, 09:29 AM

I've run the square set up and loved it. My opinion would be to try and mount the tires and see how it looks. We've done that in the past and it worked out. You'll know real quick if it doesn't fit.
Can you go to 16's?

Posted by: campbellcj Apr 2 2012, 10:03 AM

Yup, I've been running 16's in the skinny sizes -- the problem ensued when I obtained enough power to overwhelm the rears (205's) and now the wider Hoosiers are way too tall, over 25" whereas the 205's are 23"-ish.

There are some 16" Hoosier and possibly Goodyear slicks that could work if I can fit the width but that's looking doubtful so 15's are probably the answer.

Those rear fenders are the jam!!!!

Posted by: J P Stein Apr 2 2012, 12:31 PM

The slicks in my pics.(ah, poetry) are 10 X 22.5 X 16. Your rear flares *look* wide enough. The fronts area little deceptive on my car as the opening was raised 3/4 inch but as I said, just cause they fit don't mean they work.

I think I would also take into consideration the play grounds...

Chris you can probably run this car as an IMSA spec car in some of the vintage clubs.

but you may be limited to a 15inch wheel for that...
I know the HMSA club would want you to use a 15inch wheel

its another slippery slope isn't it...
you can keep the car metal and sorta production ish...

or you can cut all of that new paint job off and jump into the tube world of fiberglass flares and PCA club racing

Posted by: campbellcj Jun 5 2012, 10:36 PM

Well, more bad news I'm afraid. Based on the other sketchy stuff and damage found in the top end and induction, I decided to have the shop split the case and inspect the bottom-end. The oil pump housing is cracked so I'll need a new pump. Also there is a chance the case needs some machine work but that is still TBD; and new bearings and studs make sense since it's all apart now.

barf.gif

On the bright side the super-trick custom Mahle pistons should be here pretty soon and the top end parts and machine work will be squared-away at that point. As far as we know the rods are OK but after all this I will not be too surprised if problems surface there too.

Just FWIW this engine was built by a reputable shop that I know some other guys here have used. All indications are that it was built with some questionable used parts and "creative" machine work. Not exactly Motor Sheister awful but I am appalled to hear this stuff with regard to this shop and how much money went into this engine originally. I am looking at probably 50% of that cost again to fix and upgrade it the way I want. I bought it "as-is" from their customer who fell onto hard times, fresh in the crate, so I have no recourse with the shop unfortunately.

Additionally there are still unresolved clearance issues with the flares and at least the fronts will need to be redone or modified somehow. The rears are smaller than I wanted but should be livable and they look great so I am very reluctant to go there again.

barf.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Nov 17 2012, 05:03 PM

Well my g'damn car is still not home yet but there is forward motion. We ended up getting around the front clearance issues by going back to 15" wheels and the resulting shorter tires. (This will save a little weight too.)

Accordingly I just picked up 2 pairs of NOS 15x8's and 1 pair of 15x9's. I can also run the 16x9's I already have on the rear.

Well, after a sustained nightmare of flaky people, parts frustrations, and "stuff happens" delays, the car is finally home again! There is of course much more I want to do on the car but there is now a great foundation for 914R version 4.0

Well, I had another bummer realization yesterday. The real 15x9 Fuchs are not going to fit. Not that big a bummer since I can sell them for $$$$ or stash them for a potential future project. I have ordered some Braid repro 15x9's with a different offset, and for now I have some 16x9 Fuchs on the back, same offset as the Braids will be and they fit fine with small spacers.

Today was the first day in a very long time that I worked on my car myself...

I changed the clutch cable, which is an un-fun job on any 914 but even worse with a full rollcage.

Supposedly Terry Cables don't break... idea.gif (Granted, this cable may have been 10 years old. I went back to stock this time.)

I also installed a Triad muffler I got a while back, in place of megaphones, so I can test drive a bit on the street before heading to the track in a few weeks.

It was a great day at Willow Springs! aktion035.gif I'm very rusty but got comfortable with the car after just a few laps. I did a 1:38.8 which is not super fast but roughly middle of the pack in POC terms - there are some guys with insane skills, experience and cars out there.

In watching my video I can see several places where I can easily pick-up time. Better line and later/less braking. Primarily turn 8 scares the crap out of me in general and in this stiff, light car with no aero it's a pucker-fest. I should get down to 34's or 35's after a few more events.

The car is much better than me. Same with my cameras, and my guitars. I guess life would be pretty boring if there weren't always room to learn and improve.

I have a whole bunch of vintage decals to put on, but need to plan that out carefully so it looks cool and not overly busy.

Posted by: campbellcj Feb 15 2014, 09:46 PM

I installed my new rear Braid 15x9 Fuchs repros with fresh Hoosiers. I was going to sell them but decided I'll probably keep the 16x9 Fuchs too, for the taller gearing effect. But the next event is short track (Streets of Willow).

I reduced the spacers slightly as I was getting a bit of rubbing on the left front and just a hair on the left rear. All 4 corners seem optimal now.

The Braids are nice wheels. I'm going to order a full set in "RSR" finish.

Also got the bulk of the install done for the Racepak G2X GPS data acq system/dash. Just have to zip-tie and tidy things up tomorrow.

This care gets better each time I come back to this build. aktion035.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Feb 18 2014, 02:08 AM

This build thread does not go nearly all the way back to when I started this saga in 2002, so I'll sum-up the history July 2002-Feb 2014 by copying this from the COTM thread.

I apologize for repeating some pics I posted before, but it's the only way for the story to flow right and catch-up to present day.

Before

It started as a very clean, "no rust" SoCal 73 2.0 street car that had been hot-rodded a bit by the PO. He had put a big-bore 2.4L/4 with Webers in the engine bay, Eurorace headers, redone the seats in a nice corduroy fabric, short-shifter, and put on the rear reflector and spoiler.

Attached Image

Attached Image

Attached Image

Version 1

But, I had just sold a really nice stock 73 2.0 and that wasn't what I was after this time around. So, I almost immediately started gutting the car. In went a welded rollcage by TC Design. I also swapped to fiberglass bumpers, and put on a freeflow Dynomax muffler, removable steering wheel, new gauges, alloy pedals, race seats and harnesses, etc. Then I had Ottos do a 5-lug conversion with SC front-end and brakes, bigger t-bars and springs. I ran a few track events this way.

Attached Image

Attached Image

Version 2

I know the Type4 has its fans and merits, such as nice torque. But I was very worried about the longevity of this 2.4 in track use, and had the lust for a /6. So I bought a hot-rodded factory /6 engine that had purportedly been rebuilt with 2.2S parts. It was a mystery motor but turned out to be a great deal and gave me no trouble in about 6 years of use.

Ottos also installed the PMS fuel cell, giant oil cooler, metal fuel lines and other mods during the /6 conversion.

Somewhere along the way, Ottos (John W.) also built me a killer transmission for the car, with 904 mainshaft, short gears, Quaife TBD, billet intermediate plate. I also installed a Rennshifter and redid all the linkage bits, and added the Spa fire system. I added a fiberglass skin top at some point too.

I really loved the car at this point, and ran it this way from 2003-2009 or so without major changes.

Version 3

By 2009 the racing disease had gotten worse and times were good financially so I sprung for a very nice, 0-mile 2.7 built by JB Racing for a customer who'd fallen on hard times. This twin-plugged, Weber 46 carbed beauty went in in the car, with dual MSD 6AL boxes, an M&K "R" stainless muffler, and some trick Getty GT-style deck lids went on the body.

I left the lids unpainted amber for a unique "road warrior" look. Plus, I didn't want to deal with painting the car at that point anyway.

The bigger engine was really a blast - powerful, and looked and sounded fantastic. Now the car really needed more rubber as the 205's just could not keep the power to the ground. So, I ordered some custom flares from Tangerine Racing (Chris Foley) and set the wheels in motion so to speak for some more major rework. The car went to Kundensport (Ed Palmer) in Camarillo for bodywork, paint and rollcage extensions.

After a couple seasons of pretty heavy track use, the engine was noticeably down on power and showed fairly bad leakdown in one cylinder. So the engine went to Galen Bieker at WerksII in Burbank for what turned-out to be a complete rebuild and upgrading process with extensive new parts and machine work. This was a good choice as among other sketchy things found inside, the 964 oil pump housing had cracked. (It now has a 930 pump.) Galen also rejetted the Webers for top-end, and spent a lot of time optimizing the heads.

Somewhere along the line the car also got Carrera calipers with vented, cross-drilled rotors and both ends, raised spindles, custom-valved Bilsteins, a Smart Racing front swaybar and additional tub bracing.

I added the 911R-style tail lamps to carry the "914R" theme farther along.

So, there you have it. The car has many, many more mods not listed here and countless hours and dollars poured into it, and of course that's still ongoing. I am working on the dash now and just installed the Racepak G2X data acq system last weekend. I'll probably cover the dash in perlon felt and aluminum, with a factory-looking pod over the gauge cluster.

Nicely done! One of the best I've ever seen in all the years.

914R and I had a most excellent day at Streets of Willow with Open Track Racing yesterday. Great people, great weather, and awesome cars. 2 1/2 hours of on-track time - holy moly was I tired! Here are are couple of pics (via Cali Photography).

The car is extremely fast on this sort of track and all day long I passed if not lapped everyone in my run group including a Boss 302 Mustang, Cobra replica, Cayman R, WRX STi, Cayenne Turbo, a couple of M3s, a Lotus Exige or tricked-out Elise maybe, and of course some 911s. Granted I have a ton of experience on this track, but also the car just sticks and fricken rockets off the corners with the rebuilt engine and wider rubber. In the afternoon when the track surface heated-up and junked-up a bit, I was getting wheelspin in 2nd and 3rd gear and getting very sideways. That’s with an LSD and fresh 245 Hoosiers…very fun, but not fast at that point. Going drift-style cost 2-4 secs/lap.

In the first morning session I put the right wheel off into a horrible rut then back on track which bottomed it HARD. It sounded like a bomb going off, and cracked the damn windshield as well as ripped-out the dzus fasteners holding the front spoiler on that corner. (Luckily the spoiler is fine and I zip-tied it in place.) So, I’ll be adding a windshield to the list of stuff to do soon. sad.gif

At the end of the day, coming down the hill (clockwise) very hot in 4th gear I had a spectactular spin but by then the @#%^ camera battery had died. I stayed on the track and it was a minor pucker moment. icon8.gif Fortunately nobody was close behind me.

I beat my personal best laptime here by around 2 seconds — got down into the 1:24.5 range! biggrin.gif Unfortunately due to what was most likely an operator error, I did not get any data off the new-to-me G2X box. confused24.gif Not sure what happened and hopefully the box is not broken. It was a last-minute install and I should have tested it thoroughly first. Sigh.

I have some in-car video I will try to edit and post here later. I really wish the GoPro had better audio. People always compliment how cool the car sounds at full rip, but in the video it sounds like crap and I want to hear it myself! I will work on that too.

I am heading that direction, working towards POC license and also checking into VARA. I doubt I'll get hardcore into the club racing scene -- wife and boss and insurance agent are not thrilled - but I definitely want to do some vintage and special-events stuff.

Is there a reason why you use the LE spoiler vs the black spoiler on the track?

The one in the latest above pics is not the LE, it's in between that one and the really deep Sheridan one. I used it at this last event due to the bumps, curbing and ruts at Streets of Willow. Good thing too as a pesky rut almost destroyed it! The deeper one is also thinner/lighter and likely would have been toast.

Posted by: campbellcj May 10 2014, 09:01 PM

Sorry it's been so long but life got ahold of me again and the car sat for a while. Today I dropped it off at TLG so Marco and Tony there, as well as John Esposito across the way, can take care of a few things. It will be freshly tuned, with a Sheridan rear spoiler, trans cooler and some new wheels with fresh Hoosiers for (hopefully) Laguna Seca with POC next month!

I may try to do the next POC Racers Clinic to get licensed and do some W2W. I'm jonesing to get back on the track!

Vrooooom!

Posted by: campbellcj Jun 7 2014, 09:32 PM

Marco at TLG has finished dialing-in my Webers, and did the valve adjustment and oil change. So I got to test-drive it a few blocks today and the off-idle and idle-to-main transitions are MUCH better now.

He also discovered that my little 'ditch incident' tore-off the front right swaybar mount tabs from the A-arm, which is easy to fix but I'm damn glad he found that because somehow I had not and probably would not have until it was too late.

Next week it'll get the windshield replaced and front fenders and swaybar mount fixed and then she'll be track-ready again!!!

Are you going for an oe windshield or Safe-t-lite racing?
Streets of Willow does have some interesting terrain just off of the asphalt. On one occassion with a slow speed off track expedition, the spoiler caught the soft sand and shredded it blink.gif
Have a blast at Laguna Seca !

Posted by: campbellcj Jun 24 2014, 11:16 AM

Quick update: The car is at the body shop now and the fenders and swaybar mount are fixed, fenders and spoilers should get painted today and the Sheridan rear spoiler will go on.

Marty, I'm not sure on the flavor of windshield but should know today or tomorrow.

I'll be trying some Hoosier radial slicks this time, which will be my first time ever on real race tires vs. DOT R. They are going onto a new set of Braid 15x8 and 15x9 RSR finish wheels so the car should look and work sweet.

I'm excited!

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 2 2014, 09:48 AM

Hi All,

Well, 914R has made another big step towards being "done". Marco Gerace at TLG got my Webers really dialed-in nicely as well as doing a full service and coordinating a windshield replacement. John Esposito then repaired/reworked my front Tangerine flares for clearance and blended the paint masterfully. John also fixed other minor damage and installed the Sheridan rear spoiler I've had for a while. Both shops are top notch and I highly recommend them.

I headed straight to Laguna Seca (literally) after the work was finished. The only bummer is I didn't have time to order and reapply real numbers on the doors -- paint was blended-in -- so I had to use cheesy masking tape. This was also my first time on the new set of Braid 15x8&9 RSR finish Faches and Hoosier R80 radial slicks.

WOW - the car is stellar. smilie_pokal.gif The grip is shocking and the engine pulls very strong. I've never driven Laguna before but quickly settled to 1:50's and Sunday I got into 1:47 if not 1:46 territory. Unfortunately my data acq system is malfunctioning but official transponder times should be on MyLaps shortly.

My big lesson-learned was re. brake cooling. Laguna is HARD on brakes. Mid-weekend I switched from Pagid Black to Orange front pads to try to alleviate serious fade after ~20 minutes on track but that did not help much. I then realized the deep Sheridan front spoiler was blocking airflow and I have not yet hooked-up the ducting. So, Sunday I switched to a less deep spoiler and the problem vanished (but I went slower.)

Here are a few shots. I'll post video this weekend!

I may put on the graphics tomorrow.

Hi All,

As promised but a bit late, here is some in-car video of some of my fastest laps (no traffic) of the 6/28-6/29 weekend at Laguna Seca. I'll have to pay attention to my bad habit of leaving my hand on the shift lever too long vs. going back to the steering wheel. confused24.gif

This weekend had a 105dB sound limit so I was running an M&K "911R" muffler with the right outlet capped-off (so it was a 2-in/1-out). While that sapped some top-end HP vs. the megaphones I normally run, interestingly it allowed the GoPro audio to be less crappy than usual.

If any of you get a chance to drive on this historic track, I highly recommend finding a way to make it happen -- it's unbelievably fun!

Here's how she looked as of Sunday -- I very rarely drive it on the street anymore but since it still has the muffler installed from Laguna, I did the local loop on Mulholland. I'm still working on the graphics/decals and will be replacing the windshield banner with a darker color. Getting ready to hit the track again on 9/6-7!

Thanks!

Well, as you might imagine both cars are very fast and have amazing grip and braking -- enough to soil your shorts (or get you arrested, or killed) if you are not 100% paying attention. The Turbo is waaaay more modern and refined. The #1 thing that stands out is its astounding torque. It has enough comfort and amenities to be a daily-driver if so desired.

The 914 is totally engaging and brutal, not at all modern or refined. #1 thing is its throttle response, steering and brakes are direct, purely mechanical and instantaneous. There are zero creature comforts unless you consider a windshield to be a luxury (hey, some guys might).

Both cars are both loads of fun and I hope to keep them both for many, many years if not "forever".

Here's a gratuitous shot of the Turbo, FWIW:

Correct, Willow Springs, sorry I did not mention that. Next -- I will possibly miss it due to work -- Chuckwalla in early October, then Buttonwillow in early November. I haven't driven Buttonwillow in like 13 years so that will be fun.

These are POC events. It does not appear I will be able to start racing with VARA till next year.

Posted by: campbellcj Sep 6 2014, 08:51 PM

Well, 914R and I had a pretty good day at Willow Springs today. It was HOT and my times were 2-4 secs off where I want/need to be. (Tomorrow = better tires, a little cooler and less braking!)

I had a fairly spectacular spin and off in the 5-6 section which I might have caught on video. No damage or injury other than minor cracking in the front spoiler, which can be fixed easily (fiberglass). I got the classic faceful of desert sand and dust. sad.gif

Also I took the opportunity to do some dyno pulls in case I pull the trigger on moving to a GT class. The engine is supposed to make high 200's at the crank so the wheel hp is not a surprise. You can see from the jiggly lines that there is some Weber funkiness going on above 6K RPM which we'll try to tune out at some point.

Note the temperature -- 104F

Thank you! My wheels are actually 15's but the 17's have gotten very popular. I don't have any particular leads though. Be sure to figure out your tires and fender clearance before pulling trigger on wheels. Would be a shame to get a $$$$ set that didn't fit. BTDT unfortunately. Thank you! My wheels are actually 15's but the 17's have gotten very popular. I don't have any particular leads though. Be sure to figure out your tires and fender clearance before pulling trigger on wheels. Would be a shame to get a $$$$ set that didn't fit. BTDT unfortunately. For a while there my wife thought I was becoming a wheel collector.

This car is ridiculously awesome. Amazing.

I am trying to figure out wheels for my 914-v8 conversion. Currently have 15x6 Fuchs on back with 225/50/15 with no issues. Going for some 15x7 Cookies all around, fenders have been pulled in rear, I guess I'll find out if they fit!

Why this car hasn't won car of the month already is beyond me. Very nice build, Chris.

Your track wheels look to be Braids? The street wheels look authentic Fuchs? - never mind

(I went back and read the whole thread…….duh)

...because its a "race car"! Have you ever seen the lack of traffic in the "Paddock" forum? I believe ONLY one "race car" has ever on COTM as I recall the stats. Rough place for racin folks...it is absolutely one of the best cars I've EVER seen on this site!

PS: You think Chris has it bad...I've got a "race car" + a v8! True kiss of death! blink.gif

That is part of the reason I keep nominating Chris car. It is one of the best on here. The one winner was Brant's race car, which is also a great build and phenomenal car!!!

I have no problem admitting I've "voted" for this car EVERY time it comes up...we'll keep trying! We just need more members who value true performance AS WELL AS "wax on - wax off". beerchug.gif

This car and the dedication, time, and money Chris has put in to it deserve to be acknowledged.

I know I will vote for it. It's not only a badass track machine, but it's beautiful to boot.

Posted by: campbellcj Mar 16 2016, 10:08 PM

Too flattering. Thanks guys!!! Really, it is a shade-tree rat-rod with a nice paint job. I wish I could get to the track more. I actually put a muffler on a couple weekends ago so I can do short canyon runs when withdrawals get too bad.

Re. the wheels question - yes I currently have (2) pair Braid 15x9 (1) pair Braid 15x8 and (2) pair Fuchs 15x8 for this car. I like the Braids although they are not an exact cosmetic clone of the Fuchs nor are they built the same. Real 15x9's won't fit the car (I tried).

Rat-Rod my ass...there are plenty of examples of 914 rat rods (that aren't trying to be) but your car, Chris, does not qualify. shades.gif

Yikes. Was doing some inspecting and cleaning and found a nasty fuel leak. Be sure to watch your fuel systems folks. Mine was rock solid for 12+ years but I could have easily had a fireball here.

Also if you don't have a "mom's service cover" then get one - they rock!

@alphaogre - I did the bumpers a long time ago and don't think I have pics. Will be glad to pop the rear off this weekend assuming I remember. As I recall there are U-shaped aluminum brackets bolted to the stock holes where the rubber donuts usually connect.

The front bumper is not installed with dzus, more of a factory install, but both bumpers are GT Racing fiberglass. I used dzus on the roof skin and front spoiler as well. The front spoiler needs to come off for my trailer. The roof is a bare rennspeed skin with no provision for factory latches/hardware/seals.

Did some extensive cleaning/detailing today. Then I drove it.

Me too, this is one of my favorite builds and one that I dont mind reading about a few time over.

You guys are too flattering but thank you! FWIW I hope next fall/winter to do some minor cosmetic repair/freshening and some other misc projects like rewiring. I still have not fixed the lefthand paint and graphics after the sideswipe, and the rockers/spoilers are all sandblasted to hell. Need a couple new bits from Sheridan and the black trim bits resprayed. Mechanically overall it's still amazing and trackworthy - definitely going out a few more times this year.

My to-do list for the car has at least 25 tasks and by then I'll probably have thought of 25 more. And so it goes with these cars...

Also I just realized I must've not posted here about my fun with fuel leaks and potential inferno situations a few months ago! I ended up replacing some fittings and line with brand new bits as even after cleaning-up and re-assembling (pic) the old connections leaked. This type of 90-degree fitting seems flawed to me and I'm not using this style any more. Very very scary having a leak directly above the exhaust. I always try to look, listen and smell carefully when I fire up the car...any old car really.

LOL also I didn't mention earlier that I got a no front plate fix-it ticket a while back. It's so ironic as I literally drive this thing on the street 5 times a year and CHP happened to have a bug up their ass that weekend due to a resident uproar near The Snake in Agoura/Malibu. The officer practically apologized to me for the nuisance stop/ticket and said orders were to appease the residents and shut down the cars and bikes.

I'm gonna go get it signed-off at the station around the corner soon. I figure I can zip-tie the plate on as no way am I drilling holes for that.

Ridiculous. I've been w/o one on my 76 since 2009 and the black one has a Euro plate on the front. I had heard that some cops do write you up so I carry the front plates in the trunks of both cars in case I run into a fire breather.

Posted by: Dtjaden Jun 22 2016, 09:04 AM

I've used the industrial strength Velcro to good effect to attach my front plate.

I finally cleaned-up the damage from a side-swipe incident on the track some time ago, which thankfully turned out to mostly be tire rubber and trashed decals. It looks way better! I'll rattle can touch-up the fender arch as I don't want to get the whole side re-sprayed now.

Then I drove it around a bit...

Another quick update -

Life got crazy (crazier) and I've been away from the track almost a year already! I've wanted to try vintage wheel-to-wheel racing for years and finally am going to do the licensing schools I need for both POC and VARA W2W.

Unfortunately had a recent rat incursion in our garage - we live on the edge of wilderness so have critters everywhere - and they stored stolen dry dog food down in the pedalboard area! Some got into the center tunnel too. Sooooo, I've spend a couple of fun sessions hanging upside down in there, with the full rollcage and race seats, cleaning up that. Touched-up the floor paint as well. Very, very fortunately they did not seem to defecate/urinate or chew anything or nest inside the car. Lucky for me they did that outside of the car and put their food in the car...nice clean, dry food...whew

Then today I dropped it off at TLG for some basic maint/prep and tech inspection. I actually drove it there vs. trailered as it's got a muffler at the moment, and it was fine.

Woohoo, I will definitely share the school and race experiences coming up. At some point I want to set up a 2 or maybe 3-camera rig with overlaid data but no budget for that right now. I will need two new sets of $$$$ tires in December/January.

Damn rodents! Have a great time...I've been meaning to get my comp license too - I'm thinking about doing some vintage racing. Regarding next Summer - it looks like it will be Sears Point - hope you can make it! It is a very expensive hobby - car shows and concours would be a wiser choice for sure, well at least cheaper! poke.gif

Thanks! Re. swapping mufflers, "it depends". With the setup I am using now, either open megaphones or an M&K 2in/2out, the hardware is pretty well exposed and accessible so it's just a few minute job but easy to bang knuckles and also you have to change out the gaskets every few times as they get trashed and then the header-muffler connection leaks. But I do find it worthwhile per my "butt dyno" removing the muffler for the track and it sounds killer. aktion035.gif

Ask the shop if they can run a borescope under the fan shroud to look for anything the rats may have left behind. Nesting material, in particular, makes terrific insulation, and will keep your heads and cylinders toasty warm!

...Or is that "melty warm"?

I'm back and it was incredible. There was some car carnage including several dumped engines/trans and some contact during the weekend, unfortunately, but my weekend was clean and flawless. Here's a story I just wrote that POC may be publishing shortly in their blog or magazine:

---

My first Racer's Clinic experience was long overdue, as I'd had every intention of progressing thru the POC Cup Race licensing process a couple of years ago. After driving autocross, HPDE and TA/TT events for over 15 years, and having built an extensively-modified car with all the safety gear and durability required for racing, I was ready and itching to ratchet things up a notch or two. But, life happens, and I just kept missing not only the clinics but many other events as well. Finally earlier this summer, as I was fighting-off terrible withdrawals for some track action and feeling depressed every time I walked past my dormant race car, the stars aligned. Not only could I make it to a clinic weekend, it was at a new track I'd been wanting to try (Spring Mountain), and as an added bonus was being guest instructed by none other than renowned driver, author and coach Ross Bentley!

Later in a class segment, Ross would emphasize the importance of preparation on all levels - physical, mental, and gear - and I completely agree. Over the years, I have refined an event prep and packing checklist and of course compiled all the stuff to support what's on that list. Tasks like loading the trailer or swapping sets of wheels/tires are second nature for me, so no problems there. Still, any 3-4 day journey across state lines entails plenty of crucial details, from booking lodging to confirming that yes the trailer IS still at the storage place and intact, and checking/inflating no fewer than 18 tires. My car also needed minor servicing and brake pads - thanks to Marco and the crew at TLG I tried a new Pagid compound plus a new cooling duct setup.

Getting to the track entailed a nearly 7-hour tow out of LA where Waze fortuitously routed me through Death Valley at sunset. Spectacular, jaw-dropping scenery with nobody around for miles. Although I've lived in SoCal my whole life, I had actually never been to Death Valley so this was pretty cool, although isn't it a bit nerve-racking to have no cell signal for 100 miles? Ultimately I rolled-into my Parumph hotel plenty early to inhale some secondhand smoke from the oxygen-tank slot machine contingent, and ingest some of Parumph's finest buffet fare (according to the hotel's sign), before passing out.

Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. Wow. Dorothy, we aren't at Willow Springs anymore. How many tracks have hot water and showers, and were those granite countertops in the bathrooms? Air conditioning in the classroom that actually makes everybody cold? As for the track itself, we ran the Mansell D configuration which is 3.4 miles long, technical with like 19 turns depending how you count 'em and a total blast to drive. In my car with short gears I approached top speed in two sections but also used 2nd and 3rd heavily in the twisty bits. It's almost as if one connected Big Willow and Streets together into one giant Frankentrack. Thus it was a very good thing that my brake setup changes worked. It's a very nice facility and well-designed track I hope to visit again.

Ross Bentley brought a wealth of knowledge to our clinic lectures. He is an articulate and approachable guy, able to make his points clearly and keep the audience engaged without relying on slide decks or props. He really personalizes the material with his own real-world stories and sharing other people's. We had some great interactive dialog in each session, as Ross encouraged our questions and did not seem to mind what seemed like some extended tangents, as long as we reeled-in the schedule to make it to grid on time. I just bought one of Ross's recent books to delve deeper. Of course Dwain, Dave, Jim and other long-time POCers contributed massively as co-instructors with their own racing experiences plus their deep knowledge of POC rules and culture.

On track in our 4 sessions per day, we ran through a number of drills in succession, each targeting a building-block skill required to successfully finish a race. For example, first passing on a straight after corner exit, then passing within a corner, and next passing under braking into a corner. Passing on the left. Passing on the right. How race starts work. It was surprisingly fun running these drills, I thought, and was a great opportunity to get to know other drivers as we were working in pairs or teams for most of this. My main partner was Steve Town and we hit it off well, running comparable lap times despite our wildly different cars and rapidly developing that vital on-track trust and rapport. Traffic was challenging at times, as our class I'm sure had drivers of varying skill levels, but also there were a handful of cars significantly faster than the plentiful spec Boxsters and Caymans. As Ross and Dwain would continuously remind us...that's racing! We all got plenty of valuable chances to practice passing and being passed, for sure. Saturday night many of us convened at the lakeside BBQ up the road, which I also really enjoyed as I got to catch up with people I hadn't seen in ages, like Will Marcy, and meet a number of others including Ron Palmer.

The clinic culminated Sunday afternoon with a brief final lecture which was mainly a pep talk and final safe-and-sane adult behavior warning, and then we were sent off to run a 25-minute mixed-class practice race. No points or trophies were at stake here, but it was set up exactly the same as a real race. I was gridded 5th and ready to go out a solid 10 minutes before we'd go hot. Raindrops. Wait, aren't we in the desert during a historic drought? Yep, we are. More raindrops. Now, my car has hard old slicks, no windshield wipers, and I had previously driven it in the rain a total of maybe 4 minutes. More raindrops. Luckily for us, the rain tapered-off without depositing significant water on track and the cloudy sky meant no afternoon sun blasting our eyes. The race itself went well as far as I could tell, but I'm sure our starting formation was not as neat-and-tidy as ideal, and a Boxster dumped its engine along the way. Some yellow and black flags were thrown and I think these were a mix of real issues and tests for us. What I can say for sure is there were huge smiles and high-fives everywhere when we pulled into impound, each graduate having had his or her driver's log book signed-off by Dwain and having made memories and racing buddies that will last a lifetime!

The tow home was without question the roughest part of the weekend in my case: 6 1/2 hours through nighttime desert thunderstorms with some wind gusts mixed in. Oh joy! But I was on cloud nine the whole way and actually not too exhausted or anxious, as the preparation, focus and car control we cultivate during every POC event helps bring us home safely on the highway too. Now I can't wait for my next Racer's Clinic (two are required to be eligible for a race license). After so many years of chasing lap times and getting trophies for beating someone who might not even have been on track at the same time or even realize who I am, I have realized how profoundly different and more exhilarating it is to power-down at that thunderous rolling start, side-by-side, and race your fellow club members and friends to the finish line.

Here's some video. Mixed-class 20-minute practice race at the end of a Racer's Clinic (licensing school). Not terribly interesting as I was tip-toeing on bald old slicks in damp conditions, and the field was pretty small for this enormous 3.4 mile track. Basically the higher-powered aero cars ran away at the start, and I ran away from the pack of Boxsters, then just ran several clean laps without traffic.

Chris,
A Big Congrats to you in ascending and being signed off by Dwain of Vision.

As I have mentioned, your-6 is one bad a-- of a ride.
Since your local to the SoCal, your - 6 is in the league of the late Topper Chasse's-6. Topper had 30k of total track miles on his -6. He used to run circles around others in POC.
Then, he had a bunch of spares- like 6 or more trans for all of the tracks that POC ran.

The other car that comes to mind is Roger Sheridan's -6.

Your one of those -6 owners who talk the talk and walk the walk vs simply crusing around in it.

Ps, you've come a long way since our paths cross at a Willow Springs Steets event 15 years ago.

Congrats pray.gif

The VARA school is this weekend and still a go - it may rain which will suck but not stop me unless it's horrendously miserable or dangerous.

The only prep remaining is to pick-up the new tires (not using for this event, but I like having spares) and fixing some lights on my trailer.

This past weekend I knocked-out a few things:

- Cleaned and inspected the car all around
- Did a "10 foot" rattle-can touch-up of some old tire failure damage on the left rear fender
- Finally figured-out (I think) a better way to quiet-down the custom targa roof skin, which has always squeaked and rattled
- Ordered some new Hoosier slicks (!!!! and $$$$)
- Test drove around the neighborhood with open pipes

Posted by: campbellcj Jan 20 2017, 12:20 AM

I have some updates, not all good. First though, somebody was looking for roof mounting ideas on another thread so I figured I would cross-post these.

Here is my "shadetree engineering". It has held up quite a few years now. You can see my attempts at noise/vibration control.

Well, the VARA University weekend was mostly a bust. Not a total loss, but frustrating and really not fun at all. I did meet a few nice folks though.

I got a new set of slicks to have as spares. cheer.gif I figured I would probably heat-cycle them Sunday afternoon and use my old DOT Hoosiers for all the sessions.

Attached Image

The first signs of a bumpy weekend were that Buttonwillow is a 2.5 hour tow for me. It's normally a pretty easy boring drive, but for the Grapevine which this time was completely blanketed in fog. I couldn't see a thing for over an hour. Made it before 7 though.

Attached Image

It was cold. Yes, only California cold, but super damp air and Buttonwillow was just mud and water everywhere. My car then would not start. This has never happened to me that I remember. Of course I have jumpers and it fired right up but I may need a battery again.

I can say the VARA approach is very different compared to POC. The racer's group I was in was far more laid-back, less structured and informative in class and track exercises, and way slower on track. I never got up to speed or really had any fun.

Then, a big AN16 fitting on the engine oil cooler started leaking. I'm 98% sure the seal has failed, and it got worse and worse. No way could I fix this track-side, as even though I had the wrench it was impossible to get enough clearance/leverage. Not to mention I did not have that spare fitting. (I do actually carry some AN parts and tools.) Or an oil drain pan or much oil etc...

Got called into black flag twice and by the time of the after lunch session, I deemed the car undrivable as it was smoking too badly off the header and I cannot risk a total oil loss.
Attached Image

VARA signed me off for 1 day of the license school and I'll take care of the rest on some regular race weekend Friday afternoon.

Posted by: campbellcj Jan 20 2017, 12:42 AM

The car started accumulating a nasty slime of oil and smells horrendous... will be all mended up shortly though. aktion035.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Jan 20 2017, 12:49 AM

So, the latest chapter which started last Sunday when I unexpectedly came come from VARA early, is I am going to give-up any pretenses of keeping the thing streetable. For now, at least. I will keep all the parts to put it back to some sort of "road rallly spec" later if desired.

I have already removed the front lights/brackets/motors, turn signals, horns, and re-routed the wiring harness out of the way after pulling the fuses and terminating all the ends as applicable. That's a lot of weight already. I do want to basically re-wire the whole car at some point but have events to get thru, so I have to phase things.

Attached Image

I'm looking at brake cooling inlet options now. Hooking the ducts to the front spoiler totally sucks for me as the spoiler has to come off for trailering. I want to permanently get the ducts mounted on the car somehow; or, maybe a quick-release duct connector.

Posted by: falcor75 Jan 20 2017, 05:48 AM

Make ducs that use the indicator holes as intakes, in that duct you install a small forward facing orange led to use as indicator on the track.

Then might be able to have the hoses permanently installed in the wheel housings and for street use you just swap out the ducts for the stock indicators.

Sorry to hear about your weekend...I could tell you similar stories (but this is your sobbing time, not mine)! Hang in there...

PS: It is very difficult to build a 40+ year old race car that will be bulit proof reliable...even more so if it is also doing duty on the street. Good luck.

As as I have often said..."these things are pretty darn reliable, once you've replaced every single part".

Part of what is going on here, I'm pretty sure, is that the bits from earlier in the "build" (2002-04) and initial -6 conversion are coming up on 15 years old now! And that's almost all track usage. So I can foresee more of those AN fittings, bearings and so forth starting to go out. Obviously many bits are newer and hunky-dorey.

Chris.
Are to our boiling your brakes?
Get some temperature paint
I removed all of my cooling once I found out my temps. And went two steps softer in pads trying to build more temperature

my brakes are ducted through the fog lights. nicely done by one of the previous owners. I'll take some pics for you. I'm not sure if it will help or not but I can get some pics next week while the car is up on a lift if you like.

I would love to see that - still undecided on what I might change. Definitely the constant disconnecting/reconnecting with my current lashup is getting old fast.

Brant - "It depends" - I most severely had brake overheating at Laguna before I finished the duct install. Normal home tracks in SoCal here, like WSIR, are not nearly as hard on brakes. Since I hooked-up the ducts, no probs with under/overheating, but obviously I am trying to go faster and brake later, plus I switched to slicks, so there are those factors in play too.

Using a new-ish Pagid compound in front now, which I like a lot but I don't have the name/# handy.

I just left the car with Marco at TLG for the leaks and a couple other minor-ish tweaks.

Posted by: campbellcj Mar 7 2017, 10:54 PM

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates lately - I do have updates but have not been on the boards much. By the way I post stuff on Instagram as cjcam930

The engine oil cooler ended-up needing replacement, which TLG got done in time for me to make it to Willow Springs a few weekends ago. I have some video ready to upload.

I have also continued to lighten the car, which is now down to 1994lbs wet w/o driver, still with a full passenger seat+harness. I have now removed all remaining front lights, motors, and the windshield wipers as well. Other than the right seat, there's nothing more significant to remove at this point, other than actual sheet metal.

Unfortunately in that POC WSIR event the car ran GREAT but (a) I lost an exhaust megaphone at-speed - luckily did not hit anyone - and retrieved it later but it's thrashed; (b) my transponder power wiring had failed and in a double murphy's law, the POC loaner did not work right either. So I had no timing/scoring. © On top of all this, my truck broke just before as well with an unexpected >$1K bill.

THIS WEEKEND 3/11-12, 2017 I will be at Buttonwillow doing the POC Racers Clinic again, my final step towards W2W licensing. After this I have to take a few months off, so this had better be awesome!

I need to keep this update fairly short but suffice to say, my 2nd POC Racers Clinic which was at Buttonwillow last weekend was AWESOME aktion035.gif and I "graduated" as a new rookie Cup Racer. smilie_pokal.gif

What everyone says about W2W racing is true. There are very few times in your life you will ever feel more alive, alert, and challenged. Also I am finding the racer social/teamwork bonds and camaraderie very different than in the TT/TA/HPDE world where it seems so many folks stay to themselves and have no clue who's on track with them.

I will have some photos soon from CaliPhotography. Here's in-car video of our final 10-lap sprint race, which was super fun and there was no carnage AFAIK. But in the heat of the moment, I f*ed up (flat-spotted) my tires badly which caused a hellish vibration and loss of traction. Then in the final lap I went off in Star Mazda, one of the last turns! But amazingly the guy behind me who had been up my ass the whole time, had run out of gas! So I started and finished P6. P1 was a Cayman GT4 Clubsport and P2 was a Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale; factory race cars with flappy paddles and aero... P3-P5 were winged 996/997 racecars with ABS. I am very pleased how well 914R did.

I plan to get a better camera system soon, promise, hopefully with data overlay and good sound...

Congratulations Chris...job well done! I see Boxsters are still rolling chicanes. Your car sounded like it was running very strong too! Hopefully, in non-licensing events, you will truly get close-quarters w2w action...

Is historic racing an option? Can run your car (legally) with the modifications you have made? That seems to provide the best w2w action I have ever seen for a teener - like 20 cars all within a few corners, bumper to bumper. Almost a nascar race - style.

Hi Tony - Yes I have also been cleared by VARA/SVRA but there I will be put in GTU class which is the unlimited closed-wheel cars. That'll be fun as it should be stuff like 280Z's, >2.0L early 911's, Mustangs...all sorts. However I will miss their WSIR event coming up in 2 weeks.

In POC it looks like I am moving into GT3 which means I'll be running back 1/3rd of the pack (if not DFL) in the Red Group. I'm able to take a bit more weight out and add aero if I want. To squeak into GT4 which usually runs in the Orange race (with the Boxsters), I'd have to add weight, cut power and/or revert to DOT tires which I think would spoil the character and concept of this car. Honestly I think I would rather be with the crazy-fast guys than the Boxsters...

Here's another video from a practice session/race with more traffic and dicing. We started the session "Australian Pursuit" style meaning the slowest car was on pole, fastest in back, which is fun. So there is a lot of slower traffic in the first few mins, then we get moving pretty good.

I 2nd that ! Politics and vehicle choices/ placements at some of these venues just crack me up. Surfboard car also had a 914R badge on its tail idea.gif ...guess they will take credit for that little innovation as well av-943.gif

Chris brought his 914R to the Luftgekühlt3 show in 2016 and they told him to park a block away in an overflow lot. I don't get it. The surfboard car had some horrendous rear bumper gaps ; note to owner, hold that last body shop payment lol-2.gif

Still one of my favorite car builds on this site.

Posted by: campbellcj Nov 19 2017, 08:45 AM

Hmm. I just realized I had not updated this in a very long time.

I had (another) major reconstructive surgery on my right ankle in late March. 2 1/2 hours of work under general anesthesia. I'll continue to have intermittent pain and limited range for life, but physically I feel ready to race and probably in the best shape since my 20's.

Unfortunately I don't have the budget or time right now to commit to a major racing season, but for sure I will squeak-in at least a few events next year. I may do Streets of Willow first, to get back into it, a track I know extremely well and this car is very well suited for.

Also I have been increasingly torn about keeping this car in full stripped race config, non streetable. It still has license plates on it now but nothing about it is 'legal'. We have these great canyon roads around here, plus the Luft, Rennsport, and cars and coffee type things where I would love to be able to bring this car and participate (driven not trailered). So I may put the lighting and horns back in, using the GT cable-lift kit I've been saving. To be significantly more streetable, I'd need to soften the suspension and retune the engine to tolerate a quieter muffler vs open pipes. I don't currently plan to do that, perhaps later.

Gratuitous pic from the other night -

Great observation and there are many, many variables! Definitely the driver's skill and chosen lines through key turns, level of focus or fatigue, all play-in heavily.

Once you cluster-up with other cars/drivers running comparable lap times, you will see a lot of cat-and-mouse like that. Often two drivers will be within a few hundredths/second lap times overall, and be bumper-to-bumper but unable to pass one another for some time, until a mistake is made or traffic forces an opening.

In this video the front cars had 2 key mechanical differences from my little 914: ABS brakes and real aerodynamics (splitters, wings, and flat bottoms.) PDK/paddle shifters as well in a couple cars.

The ABS lets them consistently and more easily go deep into corners under braking. (I ruined a $300 tire at one point that event by locking-up my non-ABS brakes.) The aero lets them fly through certain sections i.e., fast sweepers, where I have to "tip toe" around relying purely on mechanical grip and keeping momentum.

I just watched that awesome video! Your car goes very nicely with you driving. This is very motivating to finish my motor and get it back on track. Live the dream!

It's been a really long time...the car has mostly been sitting, but I do at least try to take it out and putt around the neighborhood every 2-4 weeks.

I have been very budget and time constrained, and the car needs tires and possibly a trans freshening, but am determined to get to at least a couple of track events in the 2nd half of this year.

Would like to know what you think about the Getty lids....
Do they fit, are they light, really flimsy, etc.
Anything you can add is helpful.

I bought a set of the front/rear lids that I think are the same ones that Aase Sales carries.
They look great, but don't fit so great and really don't have the correct curves to match up with the body.
But I guess that's the way the Porsche Motorsport lids fit back in the day.
Underneath mine look killer like yours/the Getty lids.

Thanks

The Getty f/g pieces I got (~2009) are extremely nice quality. TRE Motorsports installed them originally while doing a 2.2-2.7 engine swap for me. They said the lids just bolted right up, and gaps are pretty good. A while later Kundensport painted the car.

The main point is they are very thin and light - They do warp and flex at speed - but I have had zero issues from this. The main worry would be somebody sitting on it or putting something on top that would crack the paint or f/g or balsa.

For sure look over Brant's thread(s) and some of the other race builds here on World as they have also helped me greatly.

I'm making progress (slowly) on reconfiguring 914R to be more street-friendly / less cop-magnet.

When I started this a few weekends ago it was a PITA to get the car started, as I let it sit too long and it's been colder than usual out. #becausewebers

I had to pull the air filters off so snapped this.

IPB Image

Once running I installed a NOS Dansk 2-in/1-out sport muffler I got for around 1/2 price from a private party who'd changed his build plans (ever heard that before?)

IPB Image

So far I love the Dansk muffler -- it's tamer and more "Porsche-like" than the M&K 911R muffler, I think perfectly aggressive for sporty street use. It's heavy though.

I also installed a silver Momo Prototipo, also new, that I had in storage for years. I really like it - previously I'd used a 90's-era Personal/Nardi Fittipaldi wheel since buying the car.

IPB Image

Last weekend I finished stripping the race graphics and worked on the pedalboard area (painful). Have some new streetable tires on order now and thinking about seats, possibly GTS Classics.

[attachmentid=688596]

The hood is sitting high and I'm not sure how to improve that. It's a super light Getty GT f/g lid with a replacement hood seal pushing it up too much. I need to check where I sourced the seal and determine if it's correct.

Mechanically it's running awesome. The trans needs work however - TBD - it has not been opened up since around 2004!!!

Do you mind sharing how you mounted your race seats? I don’t recall seeing that in your build thread. I’m having trouble with headroom with the floor crossbar still installed and Recaro spgs...

Thanks!

Posted by: raynekat Mar 7 2019, 11:14 PM

Which hood is high? The front or rear (or both)?

My Getty rear hood was high with the stock weatherstripping seal that sits between the engine bay and the rear trunk. I put a lower profile seal on that section and the rear hood fits like money. The larger rear main seal is stock and works fine with the Getty hood.

My Getty rear hood is on the money except towards the front where the headlight doors are. But if I had a GT look, I'd just put the 4 hood pins there and that would take care of that issue. The stock front hood seal definitely pushes up a bit and the fiberglass will flex on the edges unlike a steel hood.

I'll plan to take some pics of that soon. I'm using side-mounts (Cobra) bolted to the floor thru some steel reinforcement pieces; fixed-position, no sliders in my setup. The cross-bar is cut. That's kinda controversial but it really gets you down lower and this car has a 10-point cage so the structural integrity loss is not a big worry. (That said the floors and rest of the car were extremely clean and solid rust-wise).

Thanks! Seems like a common issue with the f/g stuff - it's only the front that is off a bit. The rear is also Getty and is perfect. I'll fiddle with it at some point but it's down the priority list a ways.

For now I'm not planning to W2W race this car, at least this year/season, but for sure will get out to a few POC timetrial/timeattack events and maybe some other stuff, for some 'casual kicks'. 914R never would be be competitive in the current POC class system and I can't afford the time/money to run a full competitive season.

Unclear if it'd be competitive in VARA but certainly would be more in its own 'league' technology-wise. One thing that makes me real nervous about VARA is a friend was taken-out in only his 1st or 2nd race, by a rookie driver making a douchebag move, and virtually totaled his car (a 911). That sort of stuff is virtually unheard-of in POC.

Business and life need to take priority for the next couple of years. Frighteningly, our son Logan will be graduating HS next year so that college thing is looming big now. Chris,

Come play with us. Old tires and a worn out box is fine.

https://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.dashboard/uidEvent/DF05FA31-F614-2D0E-4286F83BDA14A922/uidMember/566ACC54-96EB-D536-950F825DDF1B0C49

It could be really fun to do an autocross or something else different for a change - I am on motorsportreg but can't open that link (event) though - what/when's the event?

I do have good race tires on hand and trans probably would hold together...pending issue is my "street" tires are some sketchy rock hard Hoosiers...

If you're looking for some street/track tires I put on a set of the new BFG Rivals and I am impressed. Obviously not as aggressive as slicks, but I feel like they work great as a dual sport tire. Be careful with cold street weather though. Also they come in alot of fuch friendly sizes...

I'll come and back-fill info and pics on what I've been up to. Freshly stripped of racecar graphics and cleaned-up, plus some cool new tires - many battle scars tho

What is the finish on your wheels, they look great and will probably go that route when I refinish my all-black-center fuchs.

Thanks! smile.gif The wheels are 'RSR' finish 15x8 Fuchs which were redone by Al Reed years ago then put in storage. (I bought them already restored). Tires are Michelin TB5 225/50R15. For track I run 9's (Braid) in back with 245's but this square setup seems to look and perform awesomely for street use.

Yes; Tangerine -- I like them WAY better than GT flares and it's a sleeper look from the side perspective in particular, looks narrowbody but can fit 9's in back.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=22105 Thank you - wow I haven't updated this in a while (again). Unfortunately I don't have a ton of updates yet but I do finally have budget and time to make more progress this winter getting the car back into top shape for dual street/track use. Optimistic that business and health will allow me to get back out on the track shortly. For now I just make sure I drive it a little every other weekend so it's not sitting 100%.

Well folks, it's been a helluva long time again, but my car is coming along and will be back home again Friday/Saturday! This pic is from one of the last times I drove it, around a year ago -

IPB Image

Here's some of what's been completed since my last updates. (This work I farmed-out.)

- Comprehensive transmission, diff, and axle rebuild
- New flywheel and clutch
- Refreshed Patrick/Fuelsafe cell with new bladder
- Line-lock for parking brake (has vented 911 brakes w/o e-brake)
- New stainless headers
- Regular service oil/plugs/valves
- Additional de-buggering of wiring/lighting

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 13 2022, 01:34 PM

And here's some of what is on my to-do list for the next few months:

- New seats (Recaro Profi SPG)
- New fire system (Lifeline)
- New harness belts (Schroth 6pt)
- New stainless RSR 2-in/2-out muffler
- New lexan rear window from 914Rubber
- Drilled and plated hinges from Oscar
- Add third brake light
- Repair/fab rear tow hook (long story)
- Improve mounting/routing of brake cooling ducts
- Cleanup/detail interior and underside surfaces cosmetically
- Fix body and paint battle scars
- New decals or partial wrap/livery (TBD)

Under consideration:
- New windshield (again)

Posted by: JmuRiz Jul 13 2022, 02:37 PM

Good to see it's still evolving.

Tell me more about the line-lock for an e-brake!
My brother's car is like yours and needs an e-brake solution for his vented 911 rears.

Posted by: campbellcj Jul 14 2022, 10:26 AM

Thanks all - I will be posting more updates and pics next few days.

Here was the status of the interior as it was before the drivetrain came apart - I plan to either completely redo or at least touch-up the paint which is actually POR-15 in grey. My seat side-mounts and hardware all needs cleanup or replacement also.

IPB Image

Here are the seats, old (Cobra Suzuka) and new (Recaro Profi SPG). I was hoping to find Recaros that were extremely close to the size/shape of my old Cobra Suzukas and these seem to be. These are the standard narrow versions which gives me added motivation to stay in shape lol. (Plus lucky for me the large version model just got recalled.) Worst case I believe the Suzukas and other options are still available if these don't work out well.

Thank you! Trans is still a 901/914 which previously had been rebuilt & upgraded for track use a long time ago but was completely done. Now it has a boatload of new parts and is happy again. I'll probably install a trans cooler if I start doing longer/hotter track events or longer street drives at any point. Typically the car never ran really hard before for more than 20 mins or so at a time.

The car is indeed home from the shop again as of yesterday. Planning for a shakedown drive to terrorize the neighborhood a bit later.

This is the part, which is surprisingly cheap (~$30) and apparently works well per what I heard.
https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/63028/10002/-1

It's installed in the rear tunnel access area which is where my proportioning valve was before - I'm going to see how the brake balance is without that and if needed it would have to be installed on the backside of the firewall out of the cabin. Not super ideal but in many years of having it I never actually needed to mess with it anyway, just ran it full open (max pressure to rears). I had mainly installed it in case of racing in the rain or whatnot, which I only have done once and don't really plan again.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Jul 16 2022, 06:24 PM

If you set a line-lock when the brakes are hot, it can easily let go once the brakes have cooled. We have seen more than one 914 damaged due to it rolling away down-hill after this happened.

Don't trust a line-lock as a parking brake. Mechanical is still the best way to go. It also gives you a little bit of braking even if your hydraulic system has a catastrophic problem.

Thank you Dave! I'm a fairly paranoid type and will continue using wheel chocks whenever there is any sort of slope which unfortunately includes my own driveway & street!

Well I have my car back from the shop - again - and have done a couple of successful test drive blasts around the neighborhood. It's been a long time and I'd somewhat forgotten how loud, stiff and raw this puppy is. aktion035.gif

Yesterday I finally installed this crest from our friends at 914rubber, and now I'm making good progress on the new Recaro seat and Schroth harness installs.

IPB Image

I decided to defer repainting the floors/interior as most of the ugliness will be covered-up and not visible, and it's a painful nasty job. I may tackle the fire system this coming weekend and will try to take the car over to Porsche Marque Day at Supercar Sunday (Pierce College) on Sunday.

Posted by: campbellcj Sep 28 2022, 06:07 PM

I'm so lame at keeping this thread updated. Anyway, the car has now survived about 5 local test drives so that's great news. It's only gone a few hundred miles total in the last few years... unsure.gif

The new seats and harnesses are in and working well.

IPB Image

Last weekend's project was installing this gorgeous 2-in/2-out RSR style Dansk from PMS:

IPB Image

which sounds similar to my old 70mm 'sport' 1-out Dansk, which is a good thing, but a little 'throatier'. I'm sure it's a bit louder from the outside but from inside the car it sounds nearly identical to me. The carbs and fan still really drown out all else from inside the car.

IPB Image

Posted by: campbellcj Sep 28 2022, 06:12 PM

Next I still have a bunch of electrical and cosmetic stuff to knock-out, but my current puzzle is adapting or redoing my fire bottle mount to fit the new canister which is way smaller. Hopefully I can tackle that this weekend, then move on to debuggerizing the turn signals and license lights.

Posted by: Dion Sep 28 2022, 07:50 PM

The 914R is looking fantastic as usual. I do like the sound of the Dansk you were running. I’m sure the dual outlet will be quite the broadcast.
Loud pipes save lives :-)
Keep it coming Chris. beerchug.gif

Hey Chris, What are you running for chassis stiffening on this monster?

Posted by: JmuRiz Sep 30 2022, 10:34 AM

Do you remember what you painted the floors with? I'm trying to decide if I paint grey like yours, black or try and get color match...as I stripped the tar off my seats to do chassis stiffening and make sure there was no rust.

I'll put down some new style sound insulation, so I'm not sure if the color match makes sense..

It's actually grey POR-15 which is very old now, and I think I did put a clearcoat/topcoat over it but not positive. There is zero tar or deadening mat in the car and the POR-15 over bare metal has held up well overall. For track use I prefer the lighter color over black for a couple reasons.

It's got a 10-point welded-in cage plus the GT-style kit and boxed arms in the back, repairs/reinforcements around the "ears" and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. It's pretty darn solid but I do worry about all the stress from running slicks and very stiff suspension.

Posted by: campbellcj Oct 3 2022, 09:49 AM

Well I found the car was running really rough and boggy at low/mid RPMs so I cleaned-out the idle jets and voila! Way smoother and stronger now. Also found the throttle cable and pedal stop adjustments were slightly off so I fixed it so now hopefully the Webers are at WOT right at the pedal stop. Will try to post up some test drive video soon. (Have a few short ones on my insta @cjcam930)

Posted by: campbellcj Oct 12 2022, 06:51 PM

Just a quick status update. Having a muffler on the car obviously makes interior and road noise way more noticeable/annoying.

The other day I first noticed the left side rocker cover was rattling like crazy at the rear attachment point - tightened down, easy fix. Then I finally found the source of the most obnoxious noise which is not what I thought and actually was an additional culprit. The metal dash frame is/was touching against the rollcage slightly, causing a horrible buzzy rattle. I think fixed now but need another test drive.

The remaining NVH challenges are the aluminum skin door panels and the QRS fiberglass skin top (dzus fasteners), which I'll tackle soon. I may put a little sound deadening in the doors and floors but TBD and probably not. wink.gif

Also I just got a NOS turn signal switch to hopefully fix my weird blinker issue... not sure when I want to tear back into that nightmare though.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=21 Are your seats mounted directly to the floor? I was thinking about re-using the seat rails if I went race seats but I think they can get much lower if you take off the sliders?

Btw your car is a great blend of street legal and track monster, keeps the value high as well if you still keep it street legal.

Thanks! Yes, they are bolted to the floor but with some steel strips sandwiched in between for reinforcing and leveling purposes. I'm not even very tall (5'9" ish) but the extra headroom and lower driving position really makes a difference.

Years ago I remember debates about structural integrity lost from cutting out the floor cross-beams but this car has a full welded cage so I wasn't worried about that much. With an uncaged car (or rusty floors?!?!) it may be more a consideration but I dunno. confused24.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Nov 30 2022, 03:02 PM

Woohoo, I've been chipping away at my long to-do list and the car is running well (again) now. One challenge since the trans rebuild has been gunk in the fuel system from the old fuel cell that had pretty well disintegrated and from the car sitting too long. I think I finally got that cleared up. Had been thinking it was running horribly due to the new exhaust, but that didn't totally make sense since it should not be much different in flow/backpressure vs what I ran before. Sure enough it was mainly or entirely the Weber jets being clogged and possibly some inferior/fouled gas.

Some fresh pics! I just put some new decals on, and brought it out to the PCA unStock show a couple weekends ago. I plan to bring it to Motor4Toys at Pierce College this Sunday as well.

Nice update Chris.

One thing I've noticed and particulary on your car along with a few other with the blacked out bumpers:

Normally I don't like the sail vinyl delete on a 914, but with the blacked out bumpers and the wide rubber it really draws the line of the car out and lengthwise....looks really cool. Others might have commented before but with those pics...you really notice it.

Nice car and quite a change from the years posting here.

Thanks! The painter suggested leaving off the sail vinyl but keeping the bright trim to be a little "different" so we went with that, knowing it could always be added back later.

I may actually go back to the front spoiler/dam being body color and/or put some other color on the bumpers vs solid black (possibly a GT style 50/50 highlight color). I think it would be fun to not have it all orange & black. TBD.

Made it to Motor4Toys on Sunday - the car is running extremely well now but alas the engine will need to come apart again someday for an oil leak.

I need to finish the new fire system installation soon and aim to potentially get out to Streets of Willow in January, which would be my first track event since late 2018. I "just" need some new race tires and trailer tires too... merry xmas to me lol

Posted by: campbellcj Sep 17 2023, 08:41 AM

....back again! This year has been kinda sucky so far and my 914 has still mostly been sitting in the garage; but, I did just get several major issues resolved (farmed out).

A few months ago the charging system went intermittent for a bit and then totally stopped charging. Turns out that wasn't the alternator as I suspected/feared but was a double-whammy of a failed LED inside the custom quad gauge, and then once that was fixed the old Bosch regulator died.

My right front brake caliper had a seal go out and leaked quite a bit, ruining the pads and rotor. So now I've got fresh rebuilt calipers w/ new rotors and pads up front. Rear brakes were fine.

And, the speedo drive on the trans had also failed.

Always more to do but the car is driving really well again and I think is finally ready to hit the track again. (Whether I'm ready is the bigger question.)
