RRC IS ON!

We're staying here:
http://www.timberridgelodgeouray.com/ (970) 325-4856 (SOLD OUT)
$79/night - they'll want to charge you for 1 night when you reserve but you can cancel up to 2 weeks in advance and get a 100% refund. Pets $10/ea.
It's a 2 block walk up the river walk to the hot springs, bordering the RV/cabin park (Mr. Sharp biggrin.gif ), and has a fire pit, BBQs and tables in the back. We have most of the lodge, which is 15 of 20 rooms. I've been working with a super nice man named Mike and tell him you're with the 914 group when you call for your reservation.

UPDATE 9-Jul And HERE!: http://www.hotspringsinn.com/ (970) 325-7277 (STILL AVAILABLE until 8/22)
There are 14 rooms, 12 have 2 king beds. $116 plus tax. Private patios. Just down the street from Timber Ridge. This hotel doesn't accept pets. Another super nice person named Pam helped me out, so tell her you're with the 914 group.

Saturday drive: South for lunch in Durango. We'll head back to Ouray the same way, with a stop in Silverton to wander around (visit brewery) - such a good drive you'll want to do it TWICE!

NO registration fee, but let us know that you're attending so we have good numbers for meals. We'll ask you to throw in a few bucks at RRC for the BBQ and beer3.gif

Friday dinner: BBQ chowtime.gif at Timber Ridge Lodge
Saturday lunch: Animas River Cafe in Durango
Saturday dinner: True Grit Cafe in Ridgway

A couple more house keeping details.

Due to the millions of dollars we are all making in these soaring Stock Market times....

We have a new ENTRY FEE for RRC11
the fee this year is $$$$ ZERO!
(please send your check in advance directly to me!)

Seriously
we are going to make all of the meal pay as you go
There are still going to be some SPECTACULAR awards
there are still some AMAZING door prizes
it will still be the same event.
just bring some mulah to pay for your meals.
we will ask for BBQ donations or something
(maybe pitch in for adult refreshments)

I'm starting a seperate T-shirt order thread, which I will coordinate and deliver to the event!

hooray!

Wow Kent--you going to trailer your 914 out or make the drive? I'd love to get to one of these, Ouray would be awesome, that's a long haul in the 914 though...but I could trailer her out... idea.gif

Posted by: Black22 Jul 6 2011, 09:36 AM

Wow...sounds like a great trip! I grew up in Grand Junction, CO and have driven those roads several times in my life. Never did it in a 914 though, that would be a blast. driving.gif Going to have to seriously consider this one!

Posted by: SLITS Jul 6 2011, 10:05 AM

Reservation made ..... Oh Yeah! Place looks quite quaint.

Plan: Leave Thur aft/nite, slight detour to pickup SO, on to Flagstaff for nite. Make rest of run on Friday so I can be well rested for the Tequila/Yoga/Cartwheel/Burnt Animal Flesh Ice Breaker in the parking lot.

May stay for Sunday if SO can get Monday off and make the jeep run over the mountains or visit my relatives at Mesa Verde.

Posted by: Sleepin Jul 6 2011, 10:06 AM

That is a hell of a long drive for me....I might have to trailer mine as well.... lol3.gif

Shocking to hear from me these days, but no bs.gif this time... hotel booked! aktion035.gif

Been wanting to say that for a while now. Though I will have to be in my Wasserpumper 968 while the 914 is still being "restored" at Series9. shades.gif

I will in fact do that legendary drive four times ... once on the way into Ouray from New Mexico (scouting/familiarity), twice with everyone else (fun then spirited), and once on the way home (cliffs of insanity). evilgrin.gif I will actually drive almost the whole durn length of US-550. It appears it's whole length is from just north of Ouray (Delta) down to just next door to northern Rio Rancho in Bernalillo, NM. driving.gif

See ya folks there! beer3.gif

I'm down for a caravan. I may want to take the least risky route until I'm confident in my engine transplant. Otherwise I will tow it. Long drive. I'm thinking a three day trip? Or balls out in 2 days?

We may just book a spot at the campgrounds to have the camper there...might not be enough room at the hotel...already shaping up to be a huge turnout!

I am actually surprised that all the hotels aren't booked up. September has some of the most outstanding views with the colors changing and such!

There are some great hot springs pools in town as well, you guys won't regret this one. I may joke about how close this is to my house, but Ouray is actually one of Val and my favorite all time getaways!

569 miles (11hrs 22mins) is the 'short' route. YIKES!

Posted by: Madswede Jul 7 2011, 04:45 PM

I was going to suggest to my AZ brethren that my house (the site of the legendary Atomic Ramble of 2007) be used as a way-station for those that would like to get here on Thursday Sept 8th. Crash over (I have a guest room and a couch), and then caravan up on Friday. The trip back might be a bit harder for me to house people since I will be trying to return to work on Monday, but ... well, I'll just have to see how that goes.

Just so people know that's an option. I know it might make it a bit further out of the way, but ... well maybe not too bad. Ouray is just over 5 hrs from my house. PM me if any one wants to take advantage of that plan.

Jon,

Appreciate the offer but that takes it from a 9 1/2 hour drive to a 12 1/2 hour drive. I'll probably split the drive up Thursday afternoon and crash up north somewhere and then roll in to Ouray Friday morning.

The denver caravan is usually around a half dozen
I am certain there will be seats available
plus I can pick you guys up at the airport and offer you a place to stay before hand

only thing is that denver usually leaves early friday morning... some on thursday night. however there is always fun stuff to do if you want to kill a day hiking in the mountains before the trip.

You're so gonna hate that. I'm talking LizO into it. When I mentioned it tonight, she didn't hem-n-haw as much as in the past. So we might be able to talk her into bringing her COTM blue teener up there, and it would mean an extra seat home too. Time to apply peer pressure (though she rarely logs on here anymore)...

Posted by: mojorisen914 Jul 8 2011, 08:36 AM

There's an extra room at the house for anyone who wants/needs a place. Planning on leaving around 0900 on the 8th. If the dogs don't go; there will be a spot or two open in the backseat of my truck as I'm planning on trailering the car (I know, I'm a whimp).

There will be phenomenal track fees for this event. Currently in the planning process...I am at $300 each, while Brant is at $185 each....Sharon is evening out the odds by holding to $5 each....so, my guess it will be somewhere in between $5 and $300 a person.... beerchug.gif

I can eat Mexican anytime, around any corner. A good Biergarten is hard to find.

I agree. I love big..........beers.

...and I cannot lie...

Back to the food question, I have no preference myself, since I can get good Mexican/New Mexican/TexMex all over the place here as well as easy access to a great (check that, TWO great) Biergarten places within staggering distance of my house. laugh.gif So it's all good to me!

I even know the owner, the wife of whom (allegedly) may actually be coming with us to RRC '11! beerchug.gif beer3.gif drunk.gif

But this time, I don't want to be the one hauling a keg in my front seat. dry.gif

Posted by: SharonG Jul 17 2011, 05:06 PM

Jon, I'd NEVER ask you to haul a keg in the front seat of your car. That's a quest you must make on based on your own conviction. biggrin.gif beerchug.gif

The Biergarten owner, Heidi, is working with me on the details.

When Mike and I were in Germany, there was a store to buy the "Bier Wench" outfits. Germany was fun. beer3.gif

I am going this year. I was there '07, 08', and '09 and missed 2010 because of a bike race.

I drove through Ouray eight years ago and decided I would be back one day. Sweet!

I just booked at the Antlers Motel. I'm not so sure about it, but there is some running event going on that weekend and two other hotels I called are booked or >$150/night

Kent and I will be headed out Thursday afternoon about 2:00. Plan is to overnight in Cedar City, UT in the cheapest seats we can find. Will do the final run to Ouray early Friday morn. Hopefully arriving in Ouray around 3 PM (sooner if there are no Utah State Police impeding our progress).

No one else has indicated they were going to do the 1,658 mile round trip.

It's a 2 mile high parteeeeeee!

Due to the millions of dollars we are all making in these soaring Stock Market times....

We have a new ENTRY FEE for RRC11
the fee this year is $$$$ ZERO!
(please send your check in advance directly to me!)

Seriously
we are going to make all of the meals pay as you go
There are still going to be some SPECTACULAR awards
there are still some AMAZING door prizes
it will still be the same event.
just bring some mulah to pay for your meals.
we will ask for BBQ donations or something
(maybe pitch in for adult refreshments)

I'm starting a seperate T-shirt order thread, which I will coordinate and deliver to the event!

Nah... thanks though. Left for work at 06:30 and got home at 6:30. Have to work tomorrow morning and leave my house at 5:00 P.M. Sunday for Dallas to work all week. The closest I'm going to get to sweating near a 914 this weekend is walking past mine in the garage or maybe dropping by Doug's to watch him work on his! And I still haven't found or aquired parts to go further at this point.

Was it you that left the Jack Daniels Lynchburge Lemonade? This stuff is pretty tasty over ice.

Posted by: mojorisen914 Aug 6 2011, 05:52 AM

Just let me know if you need a hand or two.
I might have left the JD Lemonade there. If you like that; I'll make sure I make some from scratch for RRC. It's always better when you make it at home!
I'm going to try and stop by Dougs house today. It's the only day I have open on a weekend for the next few weekends.

Working on maximum cooling for the climb into the Rockies.

Now to ditch the Fuchs and go back to Cookies!

Ouray, CO is the next destination .....

I too spent the day getting ready for RRC. The engine is out and I obviously have a few oil leaks to contend with.

Today I'll start degreasing and have a pile of sheet metal to sent to the blaster tomorrow.

We're looking forward to getting this all cleaned up and back on the road to Ouray!

I just want to make sure you have my brother in the head count. His name is Jon. He came to Grand Junction and Torrey too.

I relocated the fuel pump to the front, so hopefully the trip won't have all the trouble of the GJ trip.

We're not doing "registrations" per se, but I have to give up the un-reserved rooms on 8/22 - I don't know what their cancellation policy is. If you don't mind winging it with your lodging, you can let us know you'll attend a few days before the event and that's fine. beerchug.gif

I was just going to do that tonight, Sharon! This needed a bump.

By the way, we have a nice list of prize donors already for this event. icon_bump.gif

Here's an update on a personal note: Went over to a friend's tire shop in Santa Fe today and put the 968 on the lift to try to do an alignment. Instead we found some issues that really need attention, and reiterated the stuff I already knew about from when Joe was here putting the engine back together.

The explanation for why she's been acting a bit squirrelly in handling recently is that the upper control arm bushings are shot, especially on the right side (see last paragraph below). Also need new bushings for the sway bar. Now I understand why I feel/hear a "clunk" when I hit a rut/driveway bump at low speeds and why she pulls right under breaking. dry.gif I only play a smart guy at work.

A chronic oil leak probably had something to do with the bushings going out as well as the starter being on its last legs. At least now I can upgrade the bushings. It seems the leak is from the rear of the lower balance shaft, a famous weak point for 944/968s it seems. Also a new water pump is needed soon - it's a slow enough leak that I can just watch it carefully for a bit, but I know it's never a good idea to put such things off.

Part of the explanation why the bushing is so bad is that I curbed the car recently. In my defense, she wasn't handling up to par since the bushing was a pre-existing issue (it's got worse of course). I'm going to replace the right front tire too, which only has a couple hundred miles on it. mad.gif I didn't curb it too badly, but it's enough to warrant a new tire. chair.gif

headbang.gif Pissed at myself for driving aggressively on a rain runoff part of the road (it was dry, but sandy/gravelly) and showing off for a girl. screwy.gif Yes, I was sober (seriously!). Coulda been much worse, I guess. Learn from my mistakes!

If the 968 won't make it in time, I'll just take the truck. I WILL be there.

I must have mis-read the NARP thread. I thought all you guys were heading out Thurday. Were leaving town Wednesday morning like 10 am. cool.gif All we've been thinking so far is leaving on Friday. We'd (well, I) offered to maybe leave on Thurs and catch up with AZ folks, but then Joe and Luckie are coming out and I think they wanted to spend a bit more time here in the ABQ. So if you head all the way down here, we can caravan on Fri with LizO, Luckie, and Joe!

We will be taking US-550 all the way from northern Rio Rancho up to Ouray. Almost its complete length, as it turns out. We actually get to drive the Durango-Silverton-Ouray corridor four times this way. driving.gif smilie_pokal.gif

We're not leaving until Friday morning and we're probably going to have to stop at Costco before we leave. Last I heard, Brant is riding with Shar and I in our trunk so we can haul back a motor Jason is dragging up to Ouray.

Your making him ride in the trunk? That's cold, man.

Because I was able to leave Bismarck early I had time to fix some stuff. Andy, I fixed my rear trunk pin so I don't need one now. Thanks!

I replaced the broke door handle on the right side and pulled the left handle and re-keyed the lock so I can now unlock the car from both doors. It would have been bad to break a handle on the right with the doors locked unsure.gif

I discovered the bracket that supports my coolant surge tank was completely broken off from both ends. I spent a couple hours repairing that. (effin pot holes here!) I think were ready to roll now.

I was going to make him sit on Mike's lap in the passenger seat of the 914, but he's too tall and would have ended up with bugs splatted on his head. That and the 914 is motor challenged (as in there is not one installed).

Give the weather 10 minutes in Western Colorado and it will change. We were in Ouray for a week last month...rained for a half hour every day, but was very pleasant.

He made it home about 11:00 PM just like me .... hell of a run ... rain, hail, snow over the passes and one hell of a storm in St George, UT.

All is good.

It's true. It's all true. I think the only reason that I made it to Ouray is that Ron ran his finger over the center contact and it popped out it's last .010". The car wasn't the problem; it was the owner. I missed that in my pre trip inspection. I also have a good idea of what I need to travel with for future breakdowns. Mine and others. Tony Binglis used to tell me that planes don't "just break down". They've been trying to tell you about the upcoming breakdown and you weren't listening. This is a good example. Mine told me 3 weeks ago. The idle mysteriously dropped. The car basically sat until the run to RRC. The 2nd time it told me was climbing the runs out of SoCal. The performance just wasn't there which I passed off as a tired engine. (Yeah; tired of my lack of concern.) When I got it started Sunday morning it tried to tell me that I had missed something. But in my rush to "get the hell out of Dodge" while it was running I turned a deaf ear to it's protest. To wit: gas pressure. A mistake that I shouldn't have made. Believe your gages before your intuition. The gage sender was in question after variances of 40psi between desert temps of 107F to an evening temp of 58F. So when I saw the pressure pegged at 100+ psi I thought that it had rolled over and died. But as Slits mentioned, I was going thru gas twice as fast as his 6 barf.gif So, while I waited in Jean to hook up with Ron I decdided to investigate a new gas smell. I found gas on the left side of the engine bay and thought that an injector was the culprit but traced it back the the PRV. It was the one I had gotten from Eric and it was leaking at the adjusting screw. No problem. I just put the old one back on. When I pulled the discharge side off the PRV it didn't spill any gas. Hmmm. Then I removed the hose from the other side and it shot gas everywhere. WTF.gif When I removed the air cleaner to improve access to the PRV the problem revealed itself. I had clamped the air box over the return line rendering the PRV useless. The gage was right! That's the nuts "n bolts" of it. But all good stories have their heroes and this one is no different. I would like to thank Brant, Joe O., Ron, Melba, Ed, Andy, Ed dV and Doug for their undying dedication to these cars and the people that drive them. These people were out working on someone else's (me) car until 1:30 am while missing "the party". Thank you from the bottom of my heart. kent ps I think one of my CV's went south a few blocks from home last night. I made it in but it was shaking. Whew! cheer.gif

Glad you made it Kent. I hate it when someone has a problem, but I love it when I can help out with something that I brought along. My theory is that if I bring, it won't need it for myself - it's working well so far! Next year there will be a spare distro cap in the trunk.
