Very cool, I'll try and keep that weekend open. Would you mind if I drive the 356 instead? The 914 isn't running well currently.

Posted by: okieflyr Jul 9 2011, 12:53 PM

Matt,

I or "we" should be there (depending who rides passenger).

Paul, we may be able to caravan if you'd like. I'm going to try and avoid I-95.

we'll provide the pulled port...

is that solera or Amantillado ?

de nada - any port in this storm ...

Donno - we'll try...
We'll be a late confirmation if we can make it, and we'll sign up for whatever you most need late in the going - preferably non- or semi-perishable since I expect we'll head straight in from SEPA.

Looks like I can be there. No track events scheduled. What do I need to bring? ..... Nevermind. I reread the original post and saw what is needed. Thanks.

No, and if you've got more than one, you're certainly qualified...
As Ken observed, you don't even have to own a 914, but if you don't at least tolerate them, you may not have a good time at this event. (Joy can marginally tolerate them, and Ken's gnomebrew helps a lot...)

I'm looking forward to seeing your car - been following it in the classifieds although it is as out of reach for me as ever...

Yeah, I doubt seriously that I'll ever actually sell my 914. Despite the fact that what I pay in storage fees every month is about the same as my first house payment, I can't seem to bring myself to sell anything. I've never been to a mass 914 event, so it's extra exciting!

Hi everybody. I just got my 914 a few weeks ago and I would love to come to this event. I live in Towson and a drive out route 70 would be nice. It would also be great to pick some brains as I am not a mechanic and I am just learning about the car. It just so happens that the 27th is my birthday and I think the family would attend as well.
Someone send me a PM with some more info please.

BTW good idea to list parts needed by people attending. I'm sure we all have some parts that we could unload w/o shipping costs.

I would have planned a weekend out east for this (I'm originally from MD and my parents still live there) but unfortunately the gathering for the Chicago area is on the same day... Maybe next year!

FYI there is an all-aircooled swap meet at Ski Roundtop, Lewisberry, PA on Sat Sept 17th.

I will do my best to be there! 27th is my birthday, not sure how the wife will take that, but it's only two hours away. I do have parts I could try to bring.

Posted by: perrysan Aug 9 2011, 01:43 PM

I've gotten the OK from my better half to make the cookout - she and our two boys will be stopping by as well. I'm not sure if I'll be able to drive a 914 to the event - My hope is to get the 914-6's fuel tank replaced. With any luck it will make to from north Towson to Frederick!

I'll definitely bring beer, and can bring a couple buckets of KFC or equivalent if that hasn't been spoken for..

Why so much trouble with your carbs? I drove mine for 5 years without touching them. They were the Spanish made Webbers. Of course, I wasn't the one who set them up so I don't know why they worked so well.

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Aug 18 2011, 06:34 PM

They have vexed me for 2 years. The engine is solid. I have moved to a proven good exhaust. I am tired of fighting clogged idle jets, gummy fuel, etc. When I get the cable link done, my carbs will be the best they have ever been. But even so, they will never be "turn the key and drive away" good.

ITB (Individual Throttle Bodies) make the sound, matters little if they're carbs or EFI. You can do a manifold (throttle body / plenum) injection if you want, like the GM cars did, but you won't get the performance.

Any guy (no matter what age) needs to come to terms with the sound of power.

I kid you not, I just flew in from Chicago, and heard an amazing (and quite personally depressing) TV editorial (from a GM of a major network affiliate) complaining that the Blue Angels / Thunderbirds (I'm not sure which) air show was too noisy, too scary, too expensive, and unnecessary for the upcoming Air and Water Show.

Mind you, this was only 1 day after J and I toured the Castle Air Museum displaying notable aircraft in America's history.

OK, it was Chicago (need I say more?) but when a prime example of this country's air superiority faces criticism because "it's loud and scary" I have to feel sad.

Of course, no offence intended to members in other countries, or those who think air power should be politely ignored, as a fart in a fine dining room...

Posted by: mepstein Aug 19 2011, 01:40 PM

Just go in person and watch a Harrier jet take off and land and you'll never think anything else is loud.

My son is 3. I'll start being worried about him coming to terms with the sound of power when he is maybe 10.

Until then, I can try and foster my interests in him in such a way that does not send him running in fear. Right now I am just interested in being able to take my son for a drive.

You're talking to a guy who's seen B-52's and KC-135's take off at Castle AFB.
I worked under the takeoff pattern at NAS Miramar when it was Top Gun home base,
Believe me - I know loud.

While I knew Chicago was a 'special' place before, I never thought I'd see a network affiliate GM base an editorial on "air shows are too loud and icky."

It explains so much...

Update from the novice party brewers- beer.gif

Recipe:Rod's Pale Ale
first- we lost our jar of Irish Moss so we left it out of the recipe?
second - we did not secondary ferment (due to ignorance).
third - we forgot to purge the keg while racking!

otherwise it's in-the-keg...

If this doesn't turn out we will bring a COTS substitute!

Matt what else can we bring along, food wise?

PS..... I'll be bringing a couple extra sets of ear muffs for Evil's solos!
If anybody wants to borrow them. Cause It's a long way to the top, if you want to rock and roll ....... Evil!

Posted by: zymurgist Aug 22 2011, 05:48 AM

Hey Rod, don't worry about leaving out the Irish moss; it's there to make the beer look pretty in the glass and it has no effect whatsoever on the taste. As a matter of fact, I forgot to add it to the brown ale too.

Secondary fermentation is IMO unnecessary, as long as you're not leaving it in the primary for more than 2 or 3 weeks.

Are you force carbonating it now? I didn't get around to racking the brown ale until this weekend, so I'm cranking up the CO2 and hoping for the best.

Posted by: plas76targa Aug 22 2011, 06:44 AM

Some thing about that "Force Carbonating" sounds hazardous. No matches or open fire near the keg!

6 days and counting. Today's weather forecast for the weekend seemed ominous but we've delt with weather before. That won't stop us!

Update from my carb rebuilding session:
No good...we did the top end, jets, bowls....you've never seen so much crap in a carb...yikes.

So we'll need to take them fully off the car and dunk in some carb-cleaning dip.

So the 914 won't make it to the event, but I still plan on showing up with my wife in the 356.

Is there anyone from NoVA driving up that wants to convoy up to Frederick?

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Aug 22 2011, 04:02 PM

I dropped my 914 at Translog today, and am hoping for a quick turn around. They had a LOT of cars there though so I may be SOL. Still at the rate I have been working on it they will still be faster, and the car may actually work when I get it back.

Zach

Posted by: flipb Aug 22 2011, 04:09 PM

I'm not completely out yet... 914 was running when I left on vacation. Get back home Wednesday and depending on family, possible that I (or all 4 of us) could get up there on Saturday.

Posted by: BajaXJ92 Aug 23 2011, 07:18 AM

Just spent the last 40hrs working under/on my '71.... smilie_pokal.gif

New trans seals...
New pushrod tube and valve cover seals...
New Brakes all around....
New(er) tires....
New plugs/wires/cap/rotor/points.

This damn car better be able to make the 500 mile roundtrip journey since the '75 has the trans sitting on the floor and needs a clutch after the rear main seal blew out... stromberg.gif

Bumpin' before this goes offline for upgrades.

IRENE is not welcome up here either, she needs to go back out to sea!

Now back to our regularly scheduled beerchug.gif chowtime.gif

Posted by: ArtechnikA Aug 23 2011, 07:19 PM

As much fun as this was last year, I'm going to have to pass.
We were delayed a day getting back into Philadelphia last weekend by weather and are still scrambling to make up from that. We did 1500 road miles plus two cross-country flights and J's a little burned out on travel just now.

I'd hoped to deliver a truckload of 911 parts to a friend on the east side of the state on the way there, but he's bailed on that deal.

I'm not worried about the weather - no one goes to a pool party and worries about getting wet. But there's just too much to be done here, and I can't really make it work as a daytrip.

Have fun y'all...

The top won't fit on the car properly, the trans is stuck in gear and the exhaust is hanging. Honestly my neck hurts so damn badly I haven't had a chance to really assess the damage.

Hope you guys have a great time! Looks like I'll be riding this storm out in Va Beach and looking for another chassis as I'm almost certain this one is tweaked. sad.gif

I had the perfect scenario all planned out. go to annapolis MD in the morning and pick up some fenders for my current project, then swing on out to the party.

then irene and all the evacuations squashed that idea. traffic will be nuts.

now it looks like I'll be hanging at home watching the trees blow.

Just tell them you are going out for smokes.

I didn't make it up either... not excited at the prospect of experiencing the rain inside the teener. BTDT

Tony, the thing at Scotty's shop is October 1-2, not Sept... still a month away.

So where are the photos from our fellow fourteeners? Hopefully they aren't sitting in the dark without electricity! Anyone headed back South tonight can drop by my place to deposit some of the leftover homebrew.

I had to leave early due to wifely demands. Dont argue with pregnant wives.

We have two 914's here. Matt's and one other. Had some eats watch the rain and drinking and talking. Not able to post pics from my phone.

Well as badly as I wanted to make it I got rear ended at about 4pm today. I slowed down and stopped for a yellow to red light. An older guy in an '09 CLK Benz Conv plows into me thinking I was going to run the light.

The top won't fit on the car properly, the trans is stuck in gear and the exhaust is hanging. Honestly my neck hurts so damn badly I haven't had a chance to really assess the damage.

Hope you guys have a great time! Looks like I'll be riding this storm out in Va Beach and looking for another chassis as I'm almost certain this one is tweaked. sad.gif

Thanks Bob. It was fun while it lasted.

Adam - get to the Dr and get that neck checked out. Sad that happened to the 914 and you. Were you on your way here or heading home? i have as set of stock tail lights and one side's light bucket you may have.

Thanks to Bonedoc for being the only 914 to make it. We missed the rest of you but respect your decisions to stay home. Mother nature isn't worth messing with.

Lets' all make it to Scotty's in October!

Sorry I missed it. Weather here is gorgeous now - went for a bike ride with the kids. Just cleaned up the teener in hopes of a drive either while they nap or after bedtime tonight.

Anyone have pictures?
I did not think to take any, and then left before most people showed up.

I was on my out of the house about 4 PM to head to Matt's house and received strong protest from the female contingent of my family, so I told them I would stay there to protect them. Fortunately no dragons or other monsters showed up. Sorry I missed the get together, they are always so much fun. Well, I'll try to make it to Scotty's. I have two track events in October. Guess I better check the dates.
