914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 1972 914- Sell it, Part it or Raffle it?

Posted by: hwgunner Aug 2 2011, 09:19 PM

Here's what we've got. We took a bunch of misc stuff we had here at GPR & built a car. We have more $$ in it than we'll ever get out of it (duh, it's a 914). The economy is taking it's toll & we don't want to put anything more into it. It drives well (brakes still don't feel quite right to Jonathan, but stop the car fine). What do we do with this? Here are the particulars:

1972 body, clear title in hand, took a hit in the passenger front at some point & has been "fixed" (pop rivets instead of welds ) The top fits slightly off, so we know something is wrong somewhere, but it tracks OK & drives OK. Take the top off & it looks fine. The red paint sucks. Lights/signals all work.

The hell hole & engine shelf were repaired by sww914 (Steve Willie at Proton Motor Sports). There isn't any other problem rust on the car.

Engine was a 1.8 & has been gone thru to be a 1911, with 20k miles on the bottom end, and:

AA 96mm P&C's (Big Bore Kit for a 1.8).

Completely rebuilt heads (2.0 heads with new valves & seats, no bad cracks in the "wrong" places).

Completely rebuilt Delorto's with new CB Performance hexbar linkage. They have a whistle, which we are told can be fixed with the proper carb base gaskets, but we don't want to take the time/effort to do it.

Dr Evil rebuilt the trans with M S X gears, a billet int plate, new syncros & new 1st gear slider. New clutch cable.

The interior is mostly there, but is mix and match. Brown carpet, black seats are good, but one has the black corduroy & one is basketweave, no drivers door panel, backpad has a "burn" hole just below the light, retractable seat belts work fine, stock steering wheel & horn pad. Stock gauges all work (except E brake light). No radio.

The buyer will need to bring wheels & tires, because I'm not giving up my widened stock rear wheels.

We rough guestimate we have more than 6K invested in the car. What are your opinions?

To add to what mark has said, What do you think it is worth? For the raffle, $6,000 is not set in stone. I am trying to get some of the money back that I put into it but I am not trying to get rich. Truely, if you add the car into the equasion and $$ I paid Willie and the basket of new/cool used parts in the motor and trans I am probably north of $8,000. Here are a few pics.

My (smartass) vote has been added. biggrin.gif

You'll get way more people voting if you start at $ 50.00 a ticket. Just me two cents.

Posted by: hwgunner Aug 2 2011, 09:43 PM

That is a great idea. I was just trying to keep the odds down. beerchug.gif

Posted by: draganc Aug 2 2011, 10:02 PM

I'm in for two tickets at $50 each or one at $100 - if the car is road safe.

Wow, gettin it from both sides tonight. Maybe that is why my 6 year old says it has to go. He wants me to finish the 911 so he and his 2 brothers can go for rides at the same time! Check out the replacement--

You folks think this is only a 3k car? Really? Rebuilt motor & trans, & only 3K?

While the motor & trans are a huge plus. Most probably look at the car & think it needs alot of work. I know you have plenty into it. The problem you run into is getting just the right buyer. Meaning someone who has a nice shell to transfer it all too. Most people are not going to spend 5-6k on a 914 that looks kind of run down. There are plenty of us here who can see the value in the car. You should know by now what cheap SOB's we all are. Of course there are plenty who would spend the 5-6k on a car that looks nice, leaks oil like seive & needs alot of mechanical work sad.gif . I'd say throw a cheap paint job on it & then get your money out of it confused24.gif . Project cars in general do not sell as well despite nice parts. Barring just the right buyer anyway.

I wish you nothing but the best whatever way you decide to sell it. I think honestly the raffle would get you the most. I just would say the raffle will only happen if it hits the cap you set. That way you are guaranteed your money.

Posted by: bandjoey Aug 4 2011, 08:01 PM

if you part it out...first dibs on the motor to see what's the price biggrin.gif . raffel but not over 50.

Posted by: moparrob Aug 7 2011, 12:15 AM

You could modify the raffle in such a way to increase your take. For example, the raffle could be structured so that a $50 winning ticket would entitle you to a right of first refusal to purchase the car at a fixed price of, say, $1000. That way, if you sold 60 tickets you would receive $3000 in ticket sales and $1,000 from the winning buyer - for a total of $4000 in proceeds.

I don't think selling this car does anything positive for your shop's reputation. I would part it.

Harsh reality, but agree.gif I'd be in for a $50 for giggles. If you decide to part it, I'd be interested in the gearbox. MSX would be good alternate to the MQV in the zonk now.

No, this is not our mission statement! In your first statement you referenced our "shop" and I think Mark thought of a shop that builds cars as I did. The truth is we do not build cars as part of our business. I would love to do that though and, you are right, no this would not be the car that I would put out to represent our "shop". This car was a car that I wanted for a certain purpous and now my life has changed to the point where the car needs to be sold. And as for just selling parts what Mark meant to say is "we sell the best Eruopean car parts at the best prices, and it all started with the 914"

Not mis-directed at all. I totally understand it and it makes sense. It is easy to say things in print that just do not work with out the tone of voice, facial expression, body language and sarcasm that you get in person. I read it the same way you did when i first saw it but could also hear his voice and see what he meant. Good lesson. beerchug.gif

I will give you a set of early Pedrini wheels for it to further your cause. You have to buy the lug bolts though. I might even refinish them for you (bead blast & paint).

Then raffle it. $50 - $100 per ticket to get your money out of it. Even though we are CASOBs, there has to be 60 - 120 people on this board that are willing to lose the money for a chance.

Posted by: bandjoey Aug 8 2011, 09:27 AM

Quit the stalling and start the raffling at $50. With club pelican samba and world you'll make money. Common!
