It's time to start the chatter and the rumble about this thing. All you guy's and gals on the fence what's the hold up. Dust off the project and get down to it.

How many of you West Coast guy's and gal's thought about attending?

How about the East Coast?

Going or not, Don't be shy, pipe it and say something about an Club Event that's sweeping across the country!

We won't be back from the vacation with my wifes family, 12 people in a "cabin" somewhere in Michigan. Trying to convince her that I could sneak away for a day and attend, that didn't fly very well sad.gif

Trust me I would rather be there with all you.

But that means that week of vacation I've been saving doesn't need to be saved anymore.

So I'm on the fence at this point. We're looking into flights/finances. I should know in a few days. Of course the teener won't be anywhere near ready by then, but huh.gif big deal. It's never stopped me before.

Guys,
As of this evening there was talk of a whole 914 with out driver or co-pilot! This going to be the biggest happening of the year for 914's. Just think for $15.00 before 7/24/04 you get event shirt, event mug, and a bag full of good stuff. But, the best part is all of the 914's. Which in it's self is worth the trip!! Rooms are very limited so call and reserve yours now.

Posted by: jim912928 Jul 8 2004, 11:14 PM

Garold, I'm going to push hard to get it roadworthy (body is done, new suspension going in as we speak, interior is still out but I have most of the pieces I need). Engine is about as dirty as you can imagine after spending 4 months in a body shop and multiple years before that sitting outside in so cal desert. I replaced all the fuel/vacuum lines to get it running and planned on pulling it after I got all the body work done for the ultimate clean...but...I might just have to run it for awhile with a dirty engine! Here is a pic of my car when I pulled it into the driveway from the body shop. I'm putting boxster rims on it all around and found a great set of Konig seats for the inside!

If it's together..maybe we can caravan?

OUCH!
The event is in Whitmore Lake, MI. The fun run leaves from there and goes to Hell from there devil.gif. Get on I-94 (runs right next to the airport) west to US-23 North. Probably less than a 30 minute drive. Check the maps on the MWC forum post. It's about as uncomplicated a route from the airport as you could hope for.

Jim,
Nice car, I like silver.

Just a thought for out of town people comming to the meet. Ann Arbor is the closest large City & a large College town (U of M). If you want something a little better for the family, like Bed & Breakfast, etc. put a web search in under "Ann Arbor Convention and Visitor Bureau". Lots of good stuff to check out. Also, about 45 minutes away is Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.

Tom

Posted by: Curvie Roadlover Jul 10 2004, 08:16 AM

Looks like lots of folks are coming in from out of town friday. We're looking into planning some informal get-togethers for dinner friday and saturday and for breakfast sunday. Ed, your idea about visiting the Henry Ford Museum is terrific. It's only about 10-15 minutes from the airport. There is also an IMAX theater there that is currently showing the IMAX NASCAR movie. I'm sure you don't have to be a NASCAR fan to enjoy that. ALL the IMAX movies are spectacular. Also, located adjacent to the HF Museum is Greenfield Village. Step back in time and sample a bit of early Americana there. The Wright Bros. Cycle Shop is there as is Thomas Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory, where the electric light bulb was invented. http://www.hfmgv.org/ to the website. You can check there for movie times and museum and village hours of operation. The event co-organizers are meeting tomorrow morning to plan some stuff to do for friday and saturday evening and sunday morning. Stay posted here and in the MWC forum for details.

SMOG Guys/Gals & Out of Towner's.

Need some input from everyone regarding Friday night Aug. 6th. I have a large room reserved at the Motel & wondering if everyone wants to meet there for, conversation, beer/wine, mini-swap meet, literature collection & just general bull session?? I am willing to bring lots of literature stuff of mine along with lots of other 914 stuff for viewing, etc. I Think Hawk & maybe some others have rooms reserved. We could have a motel room smorgasbord of 914 stuff prior to the main event next day.

Any Suggestions????

Tom
P.S.
Potter is invited, I have a bottle of California "Two Buck Charlie Wine" for him.

Posted by: Curvie Roadlover Jul 10 2004, 08:26 AM

Just a warning:
If you're looking to stay overnight anywhere the weekend of the event, book a room ASAP. There is a national plumbers bootyshake.gif convention (I bet you didn't know we had a plumber smilie) in Ann Arbor that weekend and everythings booking up. Remember, there is a block of rooms reserved for us (at a discount rate) at the Best Western in Whitmore Lake, adjacent to the event. I don't know how many rooms they have left, though. Call (734) 449- 2058 for reservations.

Great news that all of you are flying in. It sounds like there is a quorum developing and we might all meet at the Best Western site of the event Friday evening and go to a local place for dinner, drinks and p-car chat. The wife and I took Friday off work But I'm going to be out of town Monday through Thursday for work. I hope the car is ready to go cause I have no late night window to fix last minute things. We will need to check the Ferry schedule before I can give an approx. ETA. I was speaking with a friend earlier today and he suggested we make a reservation for the ferry. He stated this time of year they may be full. I'll know more next week.

Okay - PA/NJ people - my current plan is to depart Friday morning, Aug 6 and return on Sunday, August 8.

anybody want to come along? i would not say no to a gasoline contribution but i'm planning the trip regardless. it doesn't get any cheaper than this ... it's just a touch over 8 hrs so you can probably get a bit of 911 'stick time' if you want, but you don't have to if you don't...

Ok..worked on the "arctic silver" teener all weekend. Rear suspension is done less brakes (I need to put in spacers..and waiting for new rotors and pins). I did have to put the "boxster" rims on and lower the car just to see how it would look!

i am 100% certain this is not true...

and i am only 90% certain i can attend - since we have just one car running my attendance will depend on my wife being able to avoid all weekend - and since she is having to cover a lot of summer call-outs, that's a bit iffy.

and i'm only 70% certain i'll have a door prize - i'm really backed up with dayjob stuff and the Regional PCA stuff i'm committed to. to say nothing of the stuff i should be doing to the car before i take off - but we will do what we can ...

i've already had a probably day-job complication that may have me delaying my departure until noonish Friday, rather than the morning departure i was hoping for. 600 mi, at least one fuel stop, and Valentine V-1 or no, there's a limit to how fast i'll want to push...

Maybe Mr Hemi (aka Seanery) could join us? What do you guys think?

Posted by: aircooledboy Jul 19 2004, 09:21 PM

I would love to do that Garold. boldblue.gif Yes, I do plan to go friday.

I still have a couple pesky little issues at work that are making my departure time a bit hazy, but I would sure like to get past the chicago/gary area trainwreck before mid afternoon. I've gotten boned there there for hours many times. mad.gif

Any thoughts about a good time to get through there?

Posted by: seanery Jul 19 2004, 09:31 PM

Our roadtripping canadian friend may fly in to indy. If so, we can't leave until 5ish.

Posted by: itsa914 Jul 19 2004, 09:42 PM

Chris your hosed no matter which way you go. The Skyway is a cluster, I think you are better taking 94. We could catch the toll road in Portage and hook up with Jim(912928) in South Bend and go from there.

On a Friday you would want to be past the ILL/IN border by 3:30 at the latest. Its about 3 hrs ish from Portage to the hotel.

Sean, leaving Indy at 5ish would put you at 69 & 80/90 at what, 6:30ish??? Or are you going I65 to 94?

You know he could always fly in to South Bend and we could pick him up there? Is his son coming also?

Son has a job this year (making big bucks working for the school board), so it's a solo North pole act this year. Which means my expenses of not paying for food for him will be way down. biggrin.gif

I'll know next week if I'm coming, still can't find anyone to work for me yet. It's a weekend in the summer, who wants to work on those. wacko.gif

I just checked NW, no flights into Southbend, but there is into Kalamazoo (arrive at about 7pm)

Posted by: Bill Shaw Jul 20 2004, 07:02 AM

Bruce, if you need a ride from Kalamazoo to the Classic, let me know, eh. I'm about 15 minutes from the airport and have room for a co-pilot.

Posted by: BS Chairman Jul 20 2004, 07:40 PM

Bruce,
Lets see, last I checked, NW still lands at DTW. From there, at the most, it's 35 to 40 minutes to the motel. Just a thought. rolleyes.gif

Posted by: GWN7 Jul 20 2004, 09:33 PM

Yes I know about DTW. biggrin.gif If I remember the airport is in the SE part of the city and it would take an hour to get across the city. (I sold fishing tackle in that area one year).

I mentioned Kalamazoo to possibly hook up with Sean or Garold as they were on the way up. (Thanks Bill for the offer)

It's not where or how to get there, it's If I can find someone to work for me. Flights that connect leave here at 6am, 7am, 11am and 3pm. As I work till 8am the first two are out and the 3pm would get me there at 10pm. So it's the 11am If I can find someone to work the Friday night.

If I can get Thursday and Friday off I'll drive down. I don't have to be back here till Wens of the next week.

DTW is out of town to the west of Detroit. From there the event is further west then north a bit. 30-35 minutes to the event from DTW. No city driving, all expressway

Posted by: Curvie Roadlover Jul 20 2004, 09:49 PM

Bruce, If you come in on the 11am flight what time would you arrive? I might be able to pick you up. I'm 10 minutes from Metro.

Posted by: GWN7 Jul 20 2004, 10:12 PM

Thanks Tom,

I meant SW corner...... biggrin.gif Last time I was there (6 yrs ago) I had to drive to Lakeside, took me about an hour.

The flight leaves here at 11am...think it arrives Kalamazoo at around 3. I didn't check DTW flights yesterday, but I'm sure there are more connector flights thru Minnapolis to DTW than Kalamazoo.

This is only if I can find some one to cover for me.

Ok..here is how I'm doing on getting mine roadworthy. By friday I'll have all of my final parts (most arrived this week). So, I only have to:

1. put on the entire front suspension
2. get a wheel alignment
3. install all the brakes (after rebuilding and widening them with spacers)
4. install front/rear sway bars (although I can let this one slide)
5. speedometer cable and angle drive (would be nice to know how fast i'm going!)
6. put in my entire interior

and if I have any spare time...put on the rear reflector and some method of opening the trunk!

hmmm...I've got so much to do why am I here online!

Dang,
Just got word today I have a business presentation to make on Friday afternoon 1:30 P.M. @ the Univ. of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN. That means I will be getting home real late Friday night the 6th. Now I have to cancel my open house at the motel. Sorry guys, no beer, nuts & other fun stuff I had planned. Business comes first. This is a construction project I worked on for (6) months. I will however be there early Saturday for the main event. Now I have a dilemma, should I cancel my room reservation? Does anyone need my room for Friday night? Let me know if anyone needs my room before I cancel.

The business world is cruel & always spoils fun plans. Just can't figure why they would schedule a meeting on Friday late in the afternoon before a summer weekend.

Suibie's engine is dead - head gaskets. renting anything is right out.
unless the 911 miraculously starts acting right today, i'm out. the handwriting on the wall is quite clear. we have exactly one running car supporting two working people and we have no reserve; what was i thinking even trying to do this ?

i need to concentrate on getting this situation more stable...

Joy will have another car sometime in August after her Reno condo sale closes escrow. there are replacement engines available for the Subie, and it was always the plan for that to become my winter car. so i 'just' have to work out how to replace the engine in the 911 over the winter.

lessee -- a 2,2 overbored 0,040" is ...

anyway - it was a fun idea while it lasted, but i just don't think this is gonna happen this year. gotta go cancel on the ECR too ...

Posted by: jim912928 Jul 28 2004, 08:20 PM

well..progress is slow getting mine altogether but I'm working at it: so far I have:
1. most of the interior in (see pic...dash and stereo system left to go)
2. rear suspension is all in
3. brakes have all been cleaned, painted and spacers installed (not on car yet)
4. had the rear vented rotor turned smaller to fit my 914-4 widened calipers

What I have left to do:
1. put on the entire front suspension
2. mount all the brakes
3. mount all the tires
4. speedo cable and angle drive
5. sway bars (might not have time)
6. dash board (upper and lower and the flat part that goes to the window)
7. stereo (if I have time)
8. front end alignment

If I at least get it drivable...it may have a few missing pieces here and there!

I'd love to caravan (in South Bend IN), assuming I get done...cause this will be the maiden voyage and would be nice to have some help just in case!

Today I accomplished this:

1. the turbo tie rods are installed
2. sway bar mounts for front are welded on..and a-arms are painted
3. rear rotors and brakes are now mounted

tomorrow (sunday) I'll hopefully do this:
1. front end installed
2. front brakes installed
3. brakes bled

I did run into one snag...i put vented rotors on the back..spaced out my 914-4 rear brakes...having trouble making/finding brake pad retaining clips...broke two new ones that I tried to modify that were for a 911...any suggestions?

Things I probably won't get done:

1. antenna
2. stereo
3. dash (upper, lower and the piece that goes to the window)

Sandy and I talked about the ferry ride. We don't have reservations yet ( we were warned to make sure you have reservations this time of year) and were worried about getting to the boat by 1:30 in the afternoon. Were coming a long way by the time we get that far. We opted to keep driving.

Looking at my mapping software, if we leave at 5:00 am we don't get to the ferry til 2:30. any other problems along the way would only bump this out further. We thought driving would be best for us. I'm heading out the door for the day. I'll post our map tomorrow night late from my Hotel room. (I'm out of town for the week for work) Maybe we can figure something out.

Posted by: jim912928 Aug 1 2004, 10:04 PM

I'm getting closer!

Today I accomplished:

1. complete front suspension on (control arms with new bushings, 911 struts, new ball joints, turbo tie rods, vented rotors, rebuilt and widened calipers)
2. brakes bleed and so far no leaks!
3. have the hard part of the rear axles with repacked CV joints installed (wheel side).

Tomorrow I'll:

1. pack the tranny side CV joints and attach
2. go for a test drive!

Things yet to do:

1. upper/lower dash
2. targa bar interior panels
3. stereo, speakers and antenna
4. sway bars (front/rear)

The last 4 are all very optional for friday/saturday!

Ok, let's see about caravaning. I can leave (assuming no catastrophe's when I'm testing it out thursday) anytime friday. I will be leaving south bend from the toll road (80/90...i'm about 2 miles from the mishawaka exit) to 69 and head into michigan from there. Who's up for caravaning?

After that we will probably be in the bar with live music adjacent to the Big Boys. You can crawl back to the Best Western from there! beer3.gif

Posted by: jim912928 Aug 2 2004, 10:04 PM

Ok....I'm really cutting it short. Today I accomplished this:

1. finished installing the axles on the tranny side (what a pain as I had to remove the axle from the previous day on the passenger side as it was locked up..oh well
2. threw on some brake pins and pads
3. fired it up and made sure both rear hubs spun on engine power and stopped with brake power....success!

4. I then had to attend to some "honey do" things as I've been buried in the garage for the past 4 days...keep the peace!

Tomorrow I need to fab some rear brake pins with holes in them..., put on my grease caps in front, put the rims/tires on and go for a test drive.

My brakes are alittle spongy...the rear rubber lines look suspect, that could be a problem as I can see them flex in not the usual way when applying the brakes...I'm going to try to replace them thursday if I can find some fast enough.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Ok...some success and some setbacks. Today I fabbed my brake pad pins. Mounted the tires and took it for a test drive (see pick...daughter had to go with me on my maiden voyage!). Looks like I'm leaking some brake fluid. Rear rubber brake line is leaking and two calipers are leaking alittle. To dark when I discovered this so I'll tear into them tomorrow and thursday. GPR is overnighting me some brake lines (those guys are great!).

But, I took it for a spin around the neighborhood and man it was fun!

I'm also surprised as I did a "rough" front wheel alignment and the silly thing tracks darn straight..still going to get it aligned real soon.

And...for anybody needing new tie rod ends...get the turbo units..what a difference they make!

It's looking better for taking the trip in the 914! But, if some unforseen events take place I will make it to meet you all..just might be in either the 911 or the 928.

Jim

Update on getting my car together:

1. the brakes lines were leaking...I should have replaced those old rubber things when I ripped the suspension out..duh! Anyway, GPR overnighted me a set for the front and rear of the stainless steel ones...installed them today and so far so good...still need to bleed them again as they are too spongy (friday morning chore!).

I also replaced my shift lever as it twirled around and pulled out at will...so that is done. Put in some more interior pieces..but still no dash or stereo! And slid in a new speedo cable and angle drive (would be nice to know just how fast I'm going!).

Task for tomorrow...another shake down run..and if I have to choose between the dash and stereo...I want some tunes!

Hello all,
I and my son are still going to try to make it to the WCC. We are going to try to get the engine and monitoring in prior to Sunday so we can join the group. If not, well.....

wish i could be there, but we wound up getting a killer deal on a replacement car for Joy so we're off to VA tomorrow to pick it up. in The Big Picture, it's worked out for the best. (and i'm getting increasingly concerned about the 911, so tomorrow's 6-hr run could well be its last hurrah. glad i'm not committed to a 1500-mi weekend, all things considered - makes for a long unhappy expensive tow ...

y'all have fun, and i hope to see at least a few of you at the Fall Foliage Run. we -will- be attending that one - but almost certainly in non-P-car mode ...
