914World.com _ 914World Garage _ NFS Neat Porsche car picture

Posted by: bdstone914 Aug 19 2011, 07:08 AM

We picked up this neat print of an early Porsche car that looks like a precursor to a 550 Spyder. The print is about 16 x 20. It is going to be a new piece of shop art.
Note the covered passenger area and the drivers windscreen.
The gut we got if from said he got it in 1965 and that only 12 car were built like this. The print is titled Porsche Spyder with four overhead camshafts. Anyone seen a car like it or know any history of them?

Not a precursor, that is a 550 Spyder. The cover and single windscreen was the racing setup. Back then, race cars were just road cars with extra bits thrown out to lighten them a bit. As for 'only 12' maybe he meant the print. Or maybe only 12 550s came from the factory with the racing setup. Or maybe he's just blowing smoke. wink.gif

The picture looks like a cross between a 550 (especially the back) and the Glockler Spyders that were the predecessors of the 550.

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Gl%C3%B6ckler doesn't say anything about him making the cars, sadly.

I don't think the Glockler cars used the four-cam motor. So it might be a regular 550 with a slightly odd-looking nose.

Some pics of some of the Glockler Spyders:

Yes that is the 550 spyder about 12 made before they evolved into the 550A

The 4 OHC motor would've been their Carrera motor H-4

Looks like an early 550 to me, kind of like this one (similar front)

of the 12 that were made, only one was painted red, all the rest were silver. We found the body a few years back and re-united the body with the chassis in Germany....now under restoration.

Cool pic...
