914World.com _ 914World Garage _ VIN question

Posted by: 73Euro911S Sep 9 2011, 09:15 AM

Is there an online resource where I can plug in my car's VIN and have it tell me the correct serial numbers for the engine, tranny and also indicate the paint code?

Thanks

Nick

No. You can get a COA that will tell you the options and paint and maybe engine number but at $100 and questionable accuracy.

U might check the Vin registry here and at Club. If it was listed earlier the previous owner trail might help verify info.

You can get the paint code from the Karmann badge in the forward driver side door jamb.

Top number is the chassis number WWD9### and is interpreted:
WW = Week of the Year
D = Day of Week
9 = Karmann Factory
### = Car off the line

The bottom number is the paint code: L041 = Black

Hmmm, the p914.com site has it as L041 and the World site has L04I confused24.gif
The code in the image appears to me to be a 1

Yes the code is L041.
this is the right code for black solid on every VW.

True - but after 3 tries by PCNA's COA dept., researching everything & documenting to correct their errors, and then calling the GM of the PCNA Customer Care Dept. - I actually got mine correct! dry.gif

IIRC regular price is $119 now, but PCA members get $20 off & PCNA gives another $20 off if you send a copy of the window sticker (& maybe dealer BoS/etc.).

However, after you find & write down your VIN, engine & tranny case numbers - then you can call PCNA's 800 #, hit the Customer Care option (#3 IIRC) & ask if they can confirm if they're matching nos. They can look at the digitized Kardex to verify, and you might also ask if the HO & any other applicable Recalls were done on it, cuz they have to do anything not done.

You may have to do a song-n-dance that you'll order the COA thru PCA after your membership is official, but just want to confirm it on your new 914 & want to update them on your new ownership.

I did this and was basically told that they didn't have much besides my VIN(which I gave them) and the interior color. Not really happy about it.

I beg to differ. The correct code is L04I with an uppercase i "I" and not the number one "1".

Every other color code follows that same rule:

Letter Number Number Letter

And to quote Jeff Bowlsby:

Dave Pateman and I have just been informed by PCNA that Black is paint code L04I, as in "i"pronounced 'eye', not the number '1'

Do a Google search for L041. VW code for black. Porsche code for black.

Here is a snippet from a rennlist forum thread asking about a color on a 944:

I was hoping some you guys can tell me what the official Porsche code is for the color Black? I'm getting my car repainted in February and wanted to make sure the autobody shop has the right matching original Porsche Black color.

Thank You

Its simple its called black. paint code 041

I think L041...

Mine's black - L041.

Mine is also L041.

Someone said it on the interwebs, therefore it must be true!!!

PS: That same Google search also returns results for "L04I" biggrin.gif And a search for "L04I" also returns VW Black and Porsche Black.
Now what? happy11.gif

I say everyone with a black 914 take a picture of the paint code and post. rolleyes.gif

We have to get to the bottom of this.

I need to know whether to order my coffee L041 or L04I.

Well, I have to side with Andy. I have mine listed as L04I and I have listed it that way on the Member's VIN list. It's sitting out in the field loaded with hornets so I'll look at the plate again when it gets cooler.

Are you sure about the uppercase o O (the letter o) you circled there?
I always thought that should be a zero!

Search for L041 +Porsche or +VW yields 100X the results than L04I +Porsche or +VW blink.gif

Sure, there will be misprints on "official" documents and people will repeat errors they find "on the internet". type.gif

Let's see some actual Karmann tags for Black.
I say this is a "1" and not an "I" (and this image is from Bowlby's site rolleyes.gif )

Looks like a 7.

Thanks guys. I've had good luck by calling Kristen at PCNA and nicely asking her to confirm a few things. Too bad there isn't an online resource to at least tie the VIN with the engine #. IIRC, I was able to do this with both my 356 and 73 911.

I agree that the COA's are often inaccurate making it hard to justify the $100 expense.

Now I'm curious about my paint tag; I will have to take a closer look at it.

I really regret these American/German conflicts. Didn't we learn anything from WW 1, or was it WW I? confused24.gif
