914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Wiper Interval Relay

Posted by: SirAndy Apr 24 2003, 11:05 PM

guys,
my new wire-harness (73) came with the optional Windshield Wiper Interval Relay addition, but unfortunately WITHOUT the actual relay itself. I used the Haynes Manual to hook up the wires correctly, which wasn't too bad, but the manual does not list the actual type of relay needed. it must be similar to the square blinker relay, except that it should have 5 prongs instead of just 4 (one additional in the center).
also note that the prongs are NOT the round ones used on most of the other relays, but rather the flat type.

anyone here who has the interval option installed or happens to know the relay part number?

thank you very much pray.gif

Get one of these. Bosch p/n 0 986 335 058-001, 'Easytronic' variable interval relay. The terminals should be compatible, & they really are the mutt's nuts.

Does anyone have a picture of one of these installed in its proper place? Years ago I bought a relay, then found out there was nowhere in my 72 to put it. Now that I've got a 73 I think I'm supposed to have a spot, but I don't know where to look.

They plug in to a loose 5 pin connector that hooks to the drivers Cowl support.

Hmmm, I've got a 72 with 73 stuff (seat belt light, etc) I've wanted to do this to. It's got some empty relay connecters. Can somebody post pics?

it's actually mounted to one of the support brackets (drivers side) in the front trunk, right behind the gas-tank, next to the fresh-air box. you need the (optional) harness that goes to the wiper-motor, if you don't have that already. i got mine with the new '73 wire harness ...

Thanks, Andy. I've got a couple late parts cars at the yard, and a whole harness at the shop. Maybe I can find something if I know what to look for. It'd be cool on the 70 too (work it into the stock twist type switch). Geez, that's all I needed, more things to screw around with.... sad.gif

I guess the intermittent wiper was an option even on a '73 2.0? I have a '73 2.0 and I don't have intermittent wipers or a rear defrost.

yes, option from '73 onwards. didn't see it as a option for '70-'72.
have to look at my little book again ...

the '73 and later have the mounting hole for the relay already drilled
in the support bracket, early cars don't have the hole ...

Thanks. Intermittent wipers are a must have for where I live so that's one upgrade I will be doing when I buy replacement harnesses.

So what's the deal on this relay? Is it NLA? I've got two that don't work. Is that generic Bosch relay a drop-in replacement or do you have to rewire?
