This is always a fun run! Without Thomas telling us that we drive like sissies, we may actually be able to enjoy the view of the gun toting hunters that curse at us as we drive by.

Looks like the Dawn Patrol won't have to make a run to Mt Baldy. Have you thought about starting at Azusa Canyon to Mt Baldy?

Azuza would be good too. Where did you have in mind?. The starting point was chosen because it's what Thomas started. I don't like Starbucks but couldn't find a Peet's nearby.
Dawn Patrol. Were they at Rancho Carrillo last Sunday? We could meet nearby and caravan up.

I'm in.
Yes we've done the Azusa way up which is a little less twisty.
BTW and not to hijack. Need to know if you guys know someone local who can check my AF ratio and adjust if need be my MPS.
Slits?
Rob.... no...not Rotary Rob!

My car may or may not be in one piece around that time...if it's together, I'm in for sure!
Not too sure on the photo of the creative parking job...you might have to spill the story now that you've posted the pic!
Posted by: lagunero Sep 23 2011, 03:06 PM
Less twisty is better but more cyclists? I guessing it will be like last year...less speed more fun.

Actually....I was up GMR last weekend.....LOTS of cyclists and not too many motorcyclists.....39 is for sure less twisty accept as when you get to the top near where GMR joins Mt. Baldy road and there are less cyclists. IMHO.
If we go UP GMR there will be cyclists in the morning around 9:14 going up and down....it is amazing how fast they are going downhill.....some 40 plus MPH.
Gotta set my vent clearance before I go.

Elliot, You're thinking of the old drag strip, that's now part of the Miller brewery. The new Irwindale track is down the 605 about 1 mile, they have an oval track and 1/8 drag strip.

Well, the short story is over-cooked into a turn, hitting the brakes late and sliding out. If it weren't for that big ass boulder it is parked on, Rob would have made a steep descent into a valley with a really bad outcome. To say the least it is my belief he shit his pants though I didn't confirm that.
The car had a Suby conversion and was plenty fast. While his brakes were good, the boulder was much more effective in stopping the forward motion. We tried to pull it off but it wasn't going to happen.
There were about 20+ of us that were real happy with the outcome, but not the destruction of the car and the potential harm he could have come to.

Elliot, I think the group should stick with the original plan of Glendora Mountain Road. Just keep an eye out for street Luge (?) riders. 5 years ago I almost took out 2 of them with my 911. These guys like to ride early in the morning.

New tires, check!
Fog light rebuild project, check!
Two out of my 3 "things to do" are crossed off my list of things that would keep me from going...
Starting to feel the pressure as there's close to 20 914's so far for this...
Now I need to decide if I'm going to do my big bad brake upgrade before this or wait it out until the holiday months...

I'de say stick with your current setup until after this run, and when you switch, test it. You don't want a situation to appear on a brake system you've never ran before.

Alright, good to hear Lew is coming too, Al. I was thinking of you when I cleaned/painted/polished my gages. That, in and of itself, is worth what you charge. What a bitch of a job.
OK, Twise, Eric, Enrique, Ethan/Paul?, Brent, Al, Lew and any one else that wants to join up............Lets meet in the Sam's Club parking lot on the corner of IH215 & Murrieta Hot Springs Rd 0800hrs.
If northbound take the 215 split to the right; right at the 1st exit; right on Murrieta Hot Spgs Rd 1/2 block and right at the first light into Sams which will be on your left. Easy exit/entrance back onto the 215.
If southbound on the 15; Exit Murrieta Hot Springs Rd; left on Mur Hot Spgs over the 15 freeway then about 1/2 mile cross over the 215 freeway; right at the first light past the 215 overpass, into Sams.

Jim....I agree. Since parking is a real bitch in front of Mt. Baldy lodge...I would respectfully suggest this place.
http://www.mtbaldybuckhornlodge.com/
There is a large parking lot where we can all hang out and park.
Besides all we really want is a beer...and BS.
In any case I think we should defer to Dan since he is a Thomas protoge and has the nicest car.
Good suggestion though since there are a lot of cars going.
You would make a left instead of a right coming down the last hill once we pass the famous "Rob's rock".

Thanks for the complements I've been a little worried as well that the old eating place would be too crowded with all the people we have attending. Let's officially change the lunch location to the Buckhorn Lodge. The only issue I have is that they don't start serving lunch until 11:30, maybe we'll have to sit and BS a little longer at one of our stops along the road Glad to see that so many people are attending this year.

Sound off so I'll know that you know.
I wouldn't worry too much about the time. I don't think anybody minds if we don't get off at precisely 9:14. We hardly ever do anyway

Great call on the change to the Buckhorn, I saw that place last time, good parking. I'm sure they will accommodate our group.
How about a group photo there ?

Cant thanks the event master enough for taking the time to put together a great drive and drive we did. This mountain had some great long fast shuts as well as lots of favorable tight turns made for the 914.
At last count all cars made it off the mountain and I think the candy colored 914s running up GMR was a great addition to all the biker that dominate the canyons. We got tons of thumps up from bikers and several guys taking the time to walk over for a few picture of the cars. All & all it was another great day with friends and car.
See everyone again soon

What a great day!! Beautiful weather, great people and amazing cars!! Mine ran great until the engine started sputtering, the tack bouncing to the moon and back and then it went "BANG" and crapped out....Turns out, the coil slipped from the mounting bracket and must have grounded out against the tin. A little twisting and pushing and I was back in business...Two others stopped to help and what a relief!! Didnt get your names, but many thanks for helping me out!
The lunch was great and the venue was perfect...I am really learning a lot about these cars and really enjoyed listening to everyones conversations about how these cars run and the interesting quirks that we have to overcome...appreciate everyone and their advice...Until next time, take care!!

BOO! I was right behind you and thought I was being shot. When the "Bang" occurred all I saw was a flash of flame and cloud of black smoke. I would have pulled in behind you but you dodged a big rock and I wasn't about to park on it. After that, no place to turn around.
So all in all, a good run. As stated, they all went up and all came down. How come nobody has mention that our fearless organizer ran out of gas. We all parked and waited for a LONG TIME. I hope his wife made him understand the value of preparation ...
Damn I wish Thomas were there ... the conversation would have been hilarious.
Anyway, kudos to Albertos .... he actually drove his car more than 3 miles in 5 years.
The Grey Ghost actually decided it needed to be there and started each time without protest.
For whomever follows me next time, I will fix the oil leak. I will miss the aroma of that ol' Detroit Parfummeeee though.

I got home last night about 7. I put 575 miles on the car and averaged 25MPG. Not bad for a 38 year old carbureted car. There are enough 914's in the So Cal area to make this into a really great yearly event. To those who missed it, we'll see you next year. And maybe by next year Alberto will have an accurate way to determine how much gas he has in the car. We also met up with a 914 owner who hadn't heard of the web site. Hopefully we have another new member. Also, I think there where more wives and girlfriends at this event than the WCR. Thanks to all the gals who braved the twisty roads and drivers who think they are Mario Andretti. LOL
Cheers, Elliot

Thanks to you Alberto!!
I never had such a great time with my car AND MY WIFE together!!! Before Sunday she considered the Porsche a "GUY" thing and would only cruise with me if I insisted. Thanks to all the ladies that attended and made her feel at home.
That guy you met up with as you were "gassing up", John and his girlfriend Annie, were more than happy they got to meet up with all of us 914ers. He had a nice car too! I told him all about this site and the resources it contains, over our lunch.
Being my first run and that fact that John never encountered this website makes me think that there are more 914's out there running around than we think. I hope to see you all at the next one and even sooner at the next G&R swap meet.

Great ride with great company. My 2.7 really enjoyed the exercise. Thanks to the Donkey Member and his crew for organizing a great event, and of course Thomas!

This run was great....and real fun, great cars, folks and mix.
Special thanks to Slits for showing up and his intimate knowledge of the rear brake calipers on these cars and sharing the knowledge. Mr. Shea may dispute this.
Wouldn't have made it without his help and all the parts hoarded, traded and sold there.
Special Halloween tip for the next run:
Never let the Grey Ghost follow you and lose your hat!
Inside joke.

I tried to make it guys, but this last week, the shift linkage setup I have wont let me do Reverse or 5th, and 2nd and 3rd are ridiculously hard to get into.
Stupid car, I'm bummed.

Check out the pictures. Probably find a nice shot of your car. If so, buy yourself one...you won't regret it!

Well now we know exactly what happened when da' car went BOOM! LOL! I just did an oil change and adjusted the valves. Pulled the entire exhaust off and cut the rusty rattling heater boxes off. Now looking at the exhaust before re-installing and OH S!!T!! Well lookie here...
Time for a new exhaust! OH DARN!
