and I just posted about your braces in the teener thread...

Let me know how it goes. I'm supposed to don braces for 1.5 years, get my jaw broken, then wired shut for 6wks, then braces finally come off 6mos after that.

Are you close to long beach? I'm vistiting my brother this weekend. Maybe we can stop by and be hungry with you. Misery loves company. slap.gif

Good luck tomorrow.

cousin guido and a louisville slugger biggrin.gif , i actually dont know sad.gif

From what I understand they saw the jawbone in 1/2 and slide the out part forward and the use screws to put it in place. I would like to straighten my teeth but they say they would have to move my jaw forward afterwards because I would have a large overbite. My top teeth tilt back currently but if straightend they would tilt slightly forward creating a space between my top and bottom teeth.

It was funny the first time I went to the orthodontist. They had me fill out a form that was obviously meant for someone younger. One question was "Has his voice changed?" so I asked the cute dental assistant "From when? This morning?" They then asked if I was happy with my profile which was something I've never been concerned about before. The doctor told me I was fortunate to have a really huge jaw (one of the biggest he has seen apparantly) and a decent "chin nub" because with my overbite I should have a recessed chin. So I asked if what he was telling me was that I had the jawbone of an ass. He laughed but I don't think he knew how to answer right away. laugh.gif

The only thing stopping me from getting the braces is the jaw surgury. I am told there is a risk of losing all sensation in your lower lip due to nerve damage. It would sort of be like the freezing you get at the dentist only it would be permanent.

Good luck and let us know how everything works out. Maybe if it works for you I will reconsider getting mine done.

Posted by: Jenny Jul 23 2004, 12:07 AM

nerve damage possiblilty is far less with hinged plate surgery, as opposed to wired jaw surgery. That's what my oral surgeon said about 2mos ago when I had my consultation. Don't know the specifics of it all though. I think he was trying to explain it in layman terms. Too bad it still doesn't make a lick of sense to me. confused24.gif

Jen

Posted by: vortrex Jul 23 2004, 12:13 AM

the nerve damage can fix itself too. I had a facial injury and lost all feeling on one side of my face from my upper cheek bone down past my jaw to my neck. it was like being totally frozen by the dentist. it was like this for a little over a month and then one morning I woke up and it was all gone (a couple days before my facial surgery appt!).

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jul 23 2004, 08:27 AM

I had the top jaw done(too narrow) and a friend is getting the same thing that you are... not fun, hang in there!

Posted by: DipShit Jul 23 2004, 08:55 AM

I broke my jaw (on a diving board) and had it wired shut.

The best thing I found was to blend rasberrry shorbet and 7-Up together and suck it down with a straw.

Haven't had the desire to have it since, but remember it was damn good.

Best of luck. beerchug.gif

Aaron

Good luck. I've had about 5 patients that have had similar procedures done. None have had any nerve damage but the possiblity exists. Actually, that can happen from an injection and happens relatively frequently with wisdom tooth removal. The point is that there are risks with everything. We have to tell people all of the potential complications even thought they do not happen often. Things will be fine.

Follow the surgeons instructions. Even if you feel great take it easy (you won't swell as much) and take your meds. Pain meds work best if you use them on schedule, and they don't have start all over again killing a lot of pain. Fruit smoothies. Also some of the body building drinks will get you lots of calories.

The patients I have had do that surgery have had dramatic results and love their new look. It's almost as good as a new paint job. biggrin.gif

I remember in junior high school, in a P.E. class, a group of us were playing touch football. One guy was going long for a pass with a defender close behind. The pass was out of bounds, but they kept going. The reciever touched the ball and the defender gave him a tag-push right into a pole next to the field. Major impact. Broken jaw, but no concussion. Lots of blood from oral lacerations. He came back to school a few days later with his jaw wired shut. That was a big event for everyone in that class! ohmy.gif

Good luck to everyone planning on having their jaws broken this year. The kidney stone and subsequent removal by scope this past spring was enough medical excitement for me this year! laugh.gif

Keep us posted too! I may be having the same thing done... actually, the reverse. My lower jaw sticks out too far so my bite is off. My upper and lower teeth collide. It doesn't sound like fun.

I had jaw advancement for severe obstructed sleep apnea a few years ago. They moved the top and bottom forward 10mm and then pinned, plated, and wired everything up. It was a real bitch. Should get the braces off by the end of this year. Got any questions, send me an email. Get used to drinking ensure. Good luck.

Posted by: skline Jul 25 2004, 02:41 PM

I got one for you, take a nice tender filet mignon and some mashed potatoes and gravy, put it all together in a juicer. get the big thick straws like Jack in Crack used to use and you can have a nice meal in a cup. beer.gif barf.gif

Posted by: LS6/914 Jul 25 2004, 02:57 PM

Tequila & juice.

Posted by: Andyrew Jul 25 2004, 03:03 PM

Jello and pudding...

Mix them up or get them a little more liquidy... Thats what I survived on when taking wisdom teath out. Speeking of straws, you can suck things through your straw?

Mash potatoes with lots of extra sour cream.

Whip cream for desert

You'll recover fast.

Andrew

PS I have one word for you... AUDIOBOOKS
I suggest the Narnia series..

Daaaanng...

I had "some" swelling, but thats just crazy.. But hey, you did surgery on jaw.. I did it on 4 little teath..

I'll see if I can find a pic of how I helped the swelling..

Andrew

Posted by: Andyrew Jul 25 2004, 08:09 PM

Aight, found it...

Get some of that bandage tape, two clean/new socks, and some gel ice packs. put the ice packs in the socks, and bandage the tape on your head. Really helped keep the swelling and the pain down. I barely used any pain killers.
