Posted by: jim_hoyland Oct 21 2011, 07:17 AM

I hope that whoever steps up selects a scenic location again. Medford and Lake Tahoe were terrific locations and made the WCR feel like a vacation.

In any case, i'm looking forward to the 2012 WCR.

Yeah I think that was the plan. I think Andy decided it wasn't the time for him though confused24.gif . I'm sure he will chime in.

The only reason to have people planning now is it takes alot of time. I am assuming it will be in the late spring early summer again. It is kind of up to whoever sets it up though. There are alot of people who are setting their vacation plans with work. The sonner they get their time off on the calender. The better chance they have of having it off smile.gif

Posted by: ConeDodger Oct 21 2011, 08:28 AM

I vote for Monterey... Autocross at Marina, amazing drives along the coast. Kinda cool at night though.

I don't think Andy and Amoy really Volunteered. Maybe Amoy did but Andy doesn't have that kind of time... Andy?

I second Monterey!

Posted by: montoya 73 2.0 Oct 21 2011, 10:36 AM

Elliott Cannon?
Jonathon (GPR)?
Cap'n?

Monterey is on the Central Coast, about two hours from Paso Robles (Wine Country), San Simeon (Hearst Castle) or 3 hours from Pismo Beach or Santa Maria!

Just minutes from my second home in Atascadero, California. Would be nice to go back home for a few days!

Posted by: BigDBass Oct 21 2011, 11:01 AM

You should have it in Chicago. happy11.gif

Monterey....

Paso....wine country and Big Sur....that would be great.

Good times to be had all over that area--all sorts of lodging even camp spots near San Simeon or up in Big Sur if that's your thing.

We did the first one here in the Bay Area in 2004...

I like the central coast idea so that it becomes kind of a NorCal-SoCal meet up in between, convenient to a high concentration of 914 owners.

Cambria? SLO town? Atascadero? Thats GPR territory...I smell sponsorship....smile.gif

I love SLO town, as I went to college there....lots of great food and nightlife.

Sweet little road to drive there ( no cars entering the roadway):

I nominate Drew and Medford/White City. smilie_pokal.gif

Medford was a blast ! beerchug.gif

I think the PNW guys that attended last year think that Medford (and the hosts)
should become the permanent home of the Ramble.

Great food, drives, track and centrally located (at least for us up here) .

Go ahead and volunteer Drew, it's really not much work. headbang.gif

The event Jeff planned was great! We had something like 75 cars show up.

During big events hotel prices go up and they start requiring minimum of 2 or 3 nights.

There are county campsites at the racetrack though smile.gif

Ya, the hotel was expensive but nice and had a nice big parking ramp we could hang out on. There is camping at the track. Theback roads, the shear number of cars that this location will draw! We had so many cars we had to break up in run groups. aktion035.gif

Click on the link below in my sig space. This was done by my son and his friends as a school final project. The school agreed to let them out early if they did a video on the final build of the Alien and the trip. I agreed to bring my sons two friends if they helped finish the car. It was a great bonding experience and an awesome trip.

We need Jeff to head this up. I was part of the planning in "04" I would help again if Jeff was heading it up. He a great planner!

This could be a record setting event! idea.gif

I would lend a hand if needed. We could also ask the Central Coast Chapter of the VVWOA to participate or for some logistics help.

They are legion, believe me. Including a rotten sense of what is/isn't funny, apparently.

My apologies - I enjoyed hanging out with you at the event (remember mini-golf?) and was appalled at the situation afterwards. I thought enough time might have passed for it to have become humorous, but it's typical for me to mis-judge.

Since we're looking at Monterey area, I'll contact LPR-PCA AX head and see what's involved with either sharing their event, or helping LPR put on a Friday event we could have to ourselves (an other PCA members who are off on Fridays).

I'm also looking at a cheap little hotel in Seaside.

San Luis Obispo?? MarkB will do it!

Just kidding!!!!

I like SLO, great night life downtown for those that want. Drive north on the coast for the twisties. Cambria for lunch or Cayucos. Might be aboe to get some other local P car guys to join. My concern would be rain the later in the year it goes and SLO is real nice this time of the year but north on 1 tends to be cooler with fog.

I can also guarentee that by that time I will have Shat or goten off the pot with GPR. Never been to an event ( hissyfit.gif ) so what are the likely things people will want to do. How many "drives" need to be planned?

I used to work at a resteraunt/hotel so I might be able to get a deal there. Used to work construction with John Madonna (Madonna Inn) so might come in handy. Mark works for the State so we might get an in at one of the nearby state parks. Grandfather has the record for the highest speed on the 101 with a police escort bringing up the rear.

I just might do this if everyone wants SLO

I think the most important part is the Hotel so let me see what i can find in the next 7 day. So how many people should i plan for if it is in SLO. I know this is a crap shoot but there must be some sort of formula or norm that can be gleened from the last several years. 25, 30, 40????

What month would you all like to see it in? September?? August?? October?? July??

I don't know the numbers of people but the last 2 WCR's brought 30+ 914s.
And some of us that attended brought family and did not bring a 914.

Usually (I am told) late spring early summer.

I am excited to show off my (almost) completed project!!

I am from the peninsula and could help out... but I am currently at school in Chico and will be finishing up my Engineering degree in the spring.

I am willing to help, but I don't think I will have the time to setup and organize the whole thing.

Let me know. beerchug.gif

Regards,

Peter

I'm willing to be one of the leads on this in Monterey.

I can check out a motel in Watsonville where I work. Half way between Monterey and Santa Cruz so probably somewhat cheaper. Makes it easy to go either way. Skyline above Santa Cruz and Carmel Valley Road are both amazing roads. We have been able to coordinate with the LPR region of PCA in the past on auto crosses. We can arrange private tours at Canepa Design in Santa Cruz or Don Orosco's shop in Monterey. Lots of other possibilities in this area.

My wife and I would be glad to work with a few others to put this together. We have done 300-400 persn bicycling events in the past (which means that we know it takes a good committed team to make it work without completely draining one individual or couple.) My wife owns a marketing an design firm in the area and her has done the Tee shirt logos for us for the last 6 years.

We're in if we can get a group of about 6 to seriously work on it with us.

Work is going on in the background guys. For those of you who don't know, Ken and his wife have done the graphics for as long as I can recall for the WCR! I had forgotten that this is your neighborhood Ken!

If this comes together I'm going to see if I can bring two cars and a couple more guys from this part of the country. I think we should try for a record number of 914's

Anyone know what the record number of 914's at one of our 914 world/(club) events has been?

I nominate EllioT with one T. He's retired and he has lots of time on his hands. Call on Cliff Braun for help, he's smart and he only has one class next quarter. DW914'er Wants to help, too. Get ahold of Greg Fulmer who owns the 914-6GT in Paso, he's organized many many Porsche events in all his years and you've got a central coast crew that are all capable if not willing.
Have MarkB handle the music and you've got a rocking' party on your hands, boys.
I'd help, I really would, but I'll be fishing and surfing in Mexico and Central America way before you guys get this rolling.
sorry about the weird caps, I don't quite have this iPad down yet.

Did a quick check of prices today in Watsonville and least expensive is the Red Roof Inn at $60.00 per night. Being in Monterey or Santa Cruz would be nicer but probably closer to $100.00 per night. Does $100 per night put it out of reach for most or just a few?

There are a few great camping spots around Santa Cruz. Fewer in the Monterey area.

I'll try to stop by the motels tomorrow at lunch to see what's possible.

$ 100 is great. Average rates around here are like 130-150 ish.

Being near the beach, I would think the earlier in the year the better the price. Anything after Memorial Day and you're in full on summer around there and prices skyrocket. My sister is a teacher in Santa Cruz, I will find out when typical spring breaks are in their districts to make sure we aren't over lapping with that either because that's when things start to pick up

IIRC, its around April when the prices start going up.

As a kid, my dad took us every year camping in May or August at Sunset State Beach, Watsonville. It's between Santa Cruz and Monterey?

$100 is cool for me but the wife won't stay in a 3 or less star hotel.

This event and time frame gets my vote. It's probably one of the quieter events, the weather is typically nice too. Plus I think the cars are rad (hella rad!).

Deep summer brings either heat or fog. May could be wet though.

It maybe one of the quieter events but it still draws a lot of people to the area.

It is all in the presentation! Well maybe confused24.gif

I managed to talk my wife into going an hour out of town with me on Mother's day so I could look at 3 914's.
She went shopping and I bought 3 914's.

I do get reminded of this fairly often.

I doubt she realizes the ALMS race is just before Mother's day, I didn't.

"04" was in June. Weather was great. Candle stick was a little cool and windy. A couple pop ups were blown over damaging cars. We stayed at the Pruneyard about 65 miles north from Monterey. We had great twisty drives to Mazda Raceway. Just a thought but don't get stuck on hotels in Monterey only. We do have cars and Cali has great twisties to get where we want to hang out.

To me the primary "hanging out" spot needs to be close to the hotel I stay at.

April through May has my vote. I would actually like to make it this time. $100 to $150 per night (including tax) would be cool with me.

Posted by: jim_hoyland Dec 16 2011, 08:27 AM

The 2011 WCR HQ'd at the La Quinta in White City. Drew got us a terrific rate and the parking lot was big enough for all the 914's plus a trailerable BBQ.

A quick search on La Quinta Inn's in Monterey showed reservable rates as low as $89
If we can get the date down quickly, it will give us more opportunity to negotiate to comfortable room rate.

GGR, LPR, AAR, UFO all run events at that venue. I am probably even missing a few. I would bet even if we cannot get GGR to run a private event for us, we can piggyback on someone elses event and just cook up our own results...

Pretty much everybody in PCA Zone 7 will have a planning meeting in late January. Sierra Nevada Region will be on the 20th. No one will know their schedules till after that date. They will only know 'proposed' schedules... Loma Prieta Region uses it most with Yosemite right behind them I think... Competition Chair or Director depending on what the region calls it will know the proposed schedule as they are the ones doing the proposal. Contact Dennis Hale from UFO as well. He is the competition dude for the Datsun club UFO. They use that site as well and I am sure he wouldn't mind the extra income if they were on our proposed weekend.
The basic thing with any PCA autocross event now is that anyone can enter. If they are not members, they purchase a daily membership for $10 more. So a $30 entry becomes $40 and so forth...

914s are always welcome to show up at PCA LPR races. LPR and UFO host the most races at Marina. LPR AX used to be led or co-led by 914 guru Bill C. His street legal yellow teener had taken TTOD there once. It now sports a 2.3L TIV. I've been waiting for an update to his 13" wheel conversion thread at AXPaddock.com beerchug.gif

Still haven't heard back from the AX venue. But at this point, I expect it'll be early Jan before anything real starts happening.

Renting the site would likely include a "club" existence. Insurance is definitely required and procedures for safety especially given its a working airport.

The 2004 event was a double up with GGR where we brought the LPR trailer to the GGR event and paid a premium to tip GGR and pay LPR for use of the site and equipment. It was also the PartsHeaven swap weekend.

Yep, that made it work. We did not need a club designation or event insurance. agree.gif

This is definitely the hard part of planning the event. I just got contact info for the venue and will craft and send an email out this week. We'll see what's required.

FYI - the "914 Shoot Out" that was organized several years ago simply piggy-backed on a LPR AX race at Marina. 914 guys just kept track of our own standings, parked in the same spot, and the PCA trailer printed "our" results at the end of the day. Win-win as LPR pockets all the entry fees and hosts a big event, while 914s simply arrive and drive at a PCA event.

It is a requirement at all PCA events due to PCA insurance but they now have a 'daily membership' option that is $10 more than the entry, so $30 becomes $40... Membership is a great value though. Even if you never do anything with the club you get Panorama.

At the WCR 09 I spent $4K on the track, $1,500 on license plates and another $1,500 on the Trophies. Plus 200 T-shirts and $600 every time I feed the crowd.
Another thing is Club NARP, which I own no part of. Club NARP was the party contingent of 914 Club. That's your party contingent. We need to take them as an example and take care of this.
Now that I am retired I can no longer afford to put on party the way would like to so, someone needs to stick out thier chest, gather up the balls and make this HAPPEN....

Ok restless natives... dry.gif

The dates and hotel will be announced Friday or Saturday... I can tell you that as usual, WCR will be in late April or during the month of May. It likely will involve an optional autocross at Marina.

As for stepping up, there has always been a group working behind the scenes. As we wanted to include an autocross and we didn't have the advantage they have in Medford of a facility that will rent directly to us, we had to wait for PCA and other event calendars. These are just now trickling out...

2009 Was the year I first bought the 914 I own now....along with alot of other shiza in my personal life. Needless to say I still have the car.

I met Joe Sharp there and a bunch of really cool folks from all over West of the Mississippi. Didn't make it to the race track that year....... but have enjoyed the company since.....no matter how precieved or vulgar.

Leadership is always needed and a calling.....let me know if contributions are needed. I would never expect anyone to front anything for my fun and enjoyment. It's about the people and common interests we have for these cars.

I intend to tow my car to Cambria and drive the rest to Monterrey for this. Looking forward sometime in April or May.
