Hi all,
I'm part of the production team for Wheeler Dealers. As part of the new series we're featuring a 1974 Porsche 914. For those of you not aware Wheeler Dealers is a programme where we buy iconic cars, fix their faults and then sell them on for a profit. It is produced in the UK and broadcast all over the world.
At the beginning of the episode we always film a 'pristine version' of the featured vehicle. This is to show the viewer how good the vehicle can look and what we're trying to achieve by the end of the programme.
As such we're looking for a 914 to film that is in good condition (possibly having undergone a resto). If you have such a car and want to have it featured on TV, please email me with your availability over the next two weeks. My email is matt@attaboytv.com. Preferably if you could send some pics of your car it would be appreciated. We would require you and your car for one day and would cover travel expenses and provide a DVD of the finished programme after it has aired. Filming will be in Surrey, England.
We look forward to hearing from you.
The Wheeler Dealers Team
Awesome! I can't help with your search, but am looking forward to the episode!
-Steve
damn,,, that's cool
I was just thinking...this might need to be a two or three part programme. The 914's need a lot of work. Ed is pretty good, but it will be interesting to see the budget and it's use.
If you are looking for a UK based 914, you might be better off posting on this forum.
http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php
It's the UK 914 forum for all 6 914s left in the UK ( perhaps I under estimate the number).
BTW, You ran an episode featuring a mid year '70's Porsche 911 being flipped. Your mechanic threw away the anodised wheel arch trim because he thought it looked too blingy. I'd just spent $900.00 on similar trim for my 911 restoration.
Chris
Hey, I'm putting floats on my teener for the drive across the pond.
Ya, might have better luck flying here with a camera man.. Just sayin.
Poor Ed, I have watched many of the shows and noticed that he is never paid a dime for his labor. They never include his labor, dmv fees, taxes, insurance costs and i am sure i am missing something. Cool show but accounting is way off. john
Hey me ! I'm in Farnham and have a lovely 914 Bly problem being is its not standard. The person you need to contact is KEV914 who is on ddk - he has a MINT 2.0 that would suit you perfectly.. I'll email him this link..
Great show! I can't wait to see the 914 episode. Rust in glorious High Def!
I love that show. Good luck.
Hi wheeler dealers
you need to post this on www.ddk-online.com in the 914 forum and ask for Kev.
His cars are regularly featured in classic car mags.
Hi Bitzer, I've just emailed Kev. He is the man for the job
A few from the UK have expressed an interest in my rough, matching numbers 914-6, maybe this will edge em over..
If you're paying all expenses, send me the tickets and I'll ship my car over. Problem you'll find is that a Pristine 914 is found only on jackstands.
Love the show..watch it all the time.
Love that show! If you're willing to come to the US to film, I've got a pristine 1975 2.0L car that would be a great example. I'm sure, however, there are many excellent examples of 914s in England.
Looking forward to seeing this episode.
That's great news. I can't wait (possibly six month) to see this episode ...
And I agree, www.ddk-online.com is the place to post this demand.
Wow, just found this thread while watching Wheeler Dealers on Velocity network. Too cool, I've wondered what it would be like for the show to do a 914.
Kev, your car looks spectacular. Is that Saturn/Chrome Yellow (like mine)?
Now, lets see how Mike can find a cheap 914 that is not a pile of rust ...
Here is a good candidate ...

...
I can't imagine a 914 without mechanical problems...
I'm watching to see how much rust work they want to do. Hope they looked at some of the projects here before buying...
LET US KNOW WHEN THE AIR DATE IS!!! THANKS WHEELER DEALERS!
$6810.18 USD
One of my favorites shows. Edd and Mike make me laugh, what with their strange (to us Americans) slang and corny back and forth banter. Really looking forward to seeing the 914 episode ...
Any news ?
...
The filming of the ‘pristine 914’ took place at ‘Long cross Test Track’ in Surrey, west of London, England.
This ex-military location is often used by TV companies as well as the motor-press to photograph and test cars in a controlled environment here in the U.K.
Back when it was run by the military it was commonly referred too by the press as “our secret test facility in Surrey”.
Up to about ten years ago anybody using the test circuit were not allowed to publicize the location!
The circuit is mostly surround by trees, the southern side runs next to a military golf course; with white lines painted on the surface in places, the circuit can look just like a public road.
On the day of filming the ground was wet from overnight rain, but the day did stay dry, for most of the day it was overcast, which the film crew were happy with as there were no long shadows.
The film crew preferred filming brightly colored cars on overcast days, as the sun can water down the color!
The sun did made an appearance by the end of the day on the last few drive past shots, shining through the trees.
The moving shots were filmed from a specially converted Ford Mondeo, which is called a tracking vehicle on the long cross ‘snake test circuit’.
Incidentally the snake circuit along with most of the other test features were originally built for testing tanks which were built there during the second world war.
The driving shots do not feature me behind the wheel of the 914, they always use their own driver for the moving shots.
The ‘914’ which Wheeler Dealers bought (I haven’t seen this 914), which for the last ten years had been stored in a barn, it is a ’74 1.8 in Phoenix Red.
The ‘914 barn find’ episode will be aired in the spring of 2012.
Very Exciting!
Super cool!
Great looking car btw!
Can't wait! Someone will need to post the link to an online vid as soon as it comes out!
That's just awesome ... I cant wait to see the episode ....
Thank you very much for the pictures and the report.
Series 10 will feature 15 cars and will, reportedly, include Porsche 914, Renault Alpine, 2000 BMW M5, Fiat Dino and a Morgan. (source Wikipedia)
...
This is the 914 which Mike and Edd fix up for the forthcoming ‘Wheeler Dealer - Porsche 914 episode in series 10’
The photos show the 914 finished. The eagle eyed will notice, bits missing and that it's not quite as it should be ! but does that really matter !
The 914 was offered for sale here in the UK in a classified add on eBay for £8,250 ($12,750)
Have been informed by the TV show makers, that the 914 has now been sold and the buyer will be seen at the end of the show striking their deal with Mike.
We will have to wait till the episode is aired to find out how much Mike paid for the 914, what Edd and Mike spent fixing it up and how much they got when selling it on !
Looks like the car got a repaint ... but this migh only be a polish. They don't paint very often because it's so expensive ...
BTW ... I hate the mirrors.
The mech is seriously tall. I want to see him in the 914.
Love the show BTW. :ftw:
Let's see if Mike can hang the tail out on the tarmac. Hopefully no dodgy bits come flying out the bottom.Edd could be a great model for Bosley.
Marty
Watching the Karmann Ghia episode right now and wondering when the 914 episode will air. Anybody know?
Does the new owner of the Wheeler Dealer 914 walk among us?
Wikipedia says March
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheeler_Dealers
i think its episode 5 of the new season that starts tomorrow...here at least on Direct TV. at one episode a week, you do the math.
the impressive bit is how small a world the collector-car-world is and how impressive a forum this is to be this close to what is happening. good stuff. I spend a lot of time over at mgexperience.net and it is the same...the guy who publishes "classic motorsports" can be found there occasionally as well as the #1 MG expert in the US (john twist of university motors). cool deal that i've found two of the best forums...
Can't wait !!!!!!
So was it on this week
Or do you mean the season starts this week and the 914 episode should be in week 5?
no, i mean the new season started last night (lotus elan) and and teener is the 5th-ish (4-5-6 or so) episode. frankly, i watch every week so it doesn't matter when it is.
It should air on the 4th april unless they throw a re-run in one week, I checked my directv guide that covers the next 3 weeks and its not listed as upcoming yet. I will check weekly and post the air date here
Fun show. I started watching Wheeler Dealer last month when I ran across a mini-marathon of episodes one weekend. The episode with the Bugeye (Frogeye to the Brits) Sprite was one of my favorites. Edd is so tall he didn't even try to take it for a test drive, letting Mike do the driving. The Lotus Elan episode was on last week, but I only saw the first 10 minutes. Bugeyes and Elans are among my favorites.
I love this show also.
You actually learn stuff and the hosts seem like real people.
John
sorry. what i'm reporting is how "Direct TV" shows it here...lots of cable systems and shows present things differently and its hard to tell what is what. now that you mention it, there were some things they said in the elan episode that seemed "out of time." oh, well, anyways whoever it was that asked: no, you've not missed the teener episode.
I hope someone will record the teener episode, so all of us not living in the UK can watch it ...
Got the information from Kevin on the DDK forum
The ‘Porsche 914’ episode on ‘Wheeler Dealers’
Will be broadcast for the first time on Tuesday April 17th at 21:00 (BST) on the Discovery Channel (ch 520) & Discovery HD (ch 536)

Porsche 914 - April 17

Sounds like a great line up this season!
Wheeler Dealers, is now on Velocity cable channel, which is the re-named Discover HD. I have a call in to a friend who works in the Promotion department at Discover networks to confirm this, but...
I am pretty certain this spring Velocity will air season 8, or series 8. The series with the 914 will be seen on Discovery nets in UK. At least another year before Velocity will have it here in US.
Yep. Google wheeler dealers and there are several online tv channels with full episodes. Series 10 #5 is the 914.

The 914 episode was broadcast for the first time here in the UK today.
Sadly I do not have excess to the satellite channel Discovery, so have not seen yet.
Will be watching like most of 914-World, via YouTube when the programme becomes available to view.

Any links to this episode? Or did anyone record it? Maybe someone can upload it to the pirate bay as a torent?

THANK YOU!
The Porsche 914 Episode you all been waiting for.

That was a great episode and Kev, your yellow 914 looks fantastic.
Funny that the guy bought his own car again. 914 are a disease ! Once you owned one you can't live without it !...
...
Thanks for posting this!!
Very cool thxs
Nice video. Where's the owner of the restored 914? Member here?
That was a very enjoyable episode
Great episode! After watching this and the previous episodes, I've come to the realization that the problem we are facing with our own rustorations is the use of jack stands! There wasn't one to be seen in his shop. The props cause our cars to take root and keep them idle for years. I'm getting my car off of them tonight. I'll let you know how it works. . . .
edit: I fully understand the purpose of this reality show and personally think they did a good job presenting an entertaining episode. However, after watching it a second time, IMHO there were a couple of issues, most related to safety, that needed to be addressed or at least referenced briefly on camera: closer examination of the wiring for possible rodent damage, engine oil/filter change, 10 year old gas in the tank and gas lines, condition of the braking system (fluid, rubber lines, rusty rotors, proper rear caliper adjustment). Also, clarification of the use of a remote oil cooler (did it replace the stock cooler or was it supplemental).

This show is very well done. Thanks for posting.
Fantastic and very well done and for me educational....wish I had a lift and a rolling tool box to drop my engine on.
they make it look so easy to drop the engine. I thought you had to disassemble the exhaust and heat exchangers.
Three Cheers to Wheeler Dealers.
Thanks for posting the show!
What a plot twist! That was fun.
Thanks for posting it , thats was cool. still waiting for it to run on Directv
I agree, great episode.
- My guess is the spray painted top didn't turn out so nice in real life.
- He was definitely looking for rust in the rear trunk on the wrong end. Doh!
- It really needed new bumper tops ($$$).
- I think the wheels would have looked better with a *minor* polishing and keeping the factory anodizing.
- It looked like he was steam cleaning the carpet floors (the large pieces) with them still in the car. Not sure if he figured out how easy they are to remove... ?
And FYI, per Google:
> 8250 British pounds sterling = 13225.5750 US dollars
Probably about right for the car over there. I think in the US that's a $9000 car.
But overall a nice transformation and they could have done a much worse job!
-Steve
Not to mention an external oil cooler on a stock 1.8L L-jet engine... there's something wrong there...
I agree, forgot about that one - should have pulled the aftermarket cooler entirely.
Fun episode! My wife even wanted to watch it.
Thanks for posting the link!
The short fat british version on James is a straight-up douche. Dicked the poor guy buying it and again selling it back to him. As for the car, it was in great condition from the start! I guess they needed to make a big fuss for the show but simply requiring a t-stat and a buffing isn't quite what I would consider a "terminal car".
Neat show though
Thanks for sharing
It was a great little show and painted the 914 in a really good light If Top gear (esp Clarkson) got hold of a 914, they would slate it as the Devils work, so I'm glad these boys got their hands on it, not The TG boys..
It was a bit more than a thermostat and a Polish to be fair, the interior was done, interior rear pad fixed too, had gaffer tape all over the interior light etc. But I thought it was a shame they didn't put front and rear valences back on it - look a bit crappy without them imo.
Nutty 914 owner though buying it back!!! Although if it were given to a resto company over here it would have cost more than the extra he paid to do the work they did.. So he's got a now useable 914 for £4250
Do people really call them "nine one four" ?
His diagnosis of the overheating problem is all wrong. The bellows failing in the open position would cause the engine not to heat up as quickly. His not understanding that concept, "fail in the open position", he gets what he calls a "vw part", the kind made in China, a thermostat guaranteed to ruin the engine when it fails in the closed position. And did he drill the arm out to an 8mm bolt there? It looks huge!
The giant hole in the engine tin cut around the oil pressure sender at 21:03, and I guess the lean condition would have more to do with it.
Also, I think they're putting us on that they only spent 1500 pounds on the little they did even. You can see the front bumper pad has been replaced right before they add up the costs. Bumper pads would be like more than what they claim to have put into the interior and the engine combined for new ones.
Interesting watch anyway, and thanks for posting.
> The giant hole in the engine tin cut around the oil pressure sender at 21:03, and I guess the lean condition would have more to do with it.
You're right, I didn't see that. Hmmm, I wonder what that was supposed to be for... ?

I really dig Wheeler Dealers. Nice to see a show more about "shade tree" mechanics verses the big no budget celebrity owned hermorphodites on other shows I am so dead tired of. The nine one four episode was excellent. Thanks for bringing these fine cars back in the spotlight.
Hears a crazy idea, we need to hook up with Ed the Farmer and get him to join 914World.com
Imagine!
Crackers good Idea I think.
I just watched this show, pretty good, really enjoyed it. Nice that they show more of the details.
Most of the older mechanical type shows that I used to enjoy so much before would show us some of the detail on a build but now are more about the drama in the shop instead of the detail.
Dave
Funny--the things you notice when watching this---after Edd reinstalls the engine and is sitting in the drives seat I noticed that the tach wasn't working! Also the pass. seat looks like it as already been recovered. The right side top engine tin has been cut away to fit around the over size oil pressure sender. And yes--the front bumper top is new but they don't mention that and where did they get those wheel center caps?
YES--Just about everything they said about the car was positive!
I found the video on another site in case any of you missed it. It was a great episode. They really seemed to love the car.
http://www.streetfire.net/video/wheeler-dealers-2012porsche-914_2383052.htm
when they go thru the expense totals at the end of the show it's car and parts ONLY. if mike was paying ed or any mechanic (real world) for their time he would be in the hole more often than not.
Mike Brewer gives the Porsche 914 the Thumbs Up.
All most 2 years to the date after my 914 was filmed as the pristine 914 featured at the start of the 'Wheeler Dealers Porsche 914 episode', I finally got to meet Mike Brewer and Edd China.
My 914 won the 'Porsche Club of Great Britain National Concours' back in July; because it won, the 914 won a place on the Meguiar’s Stand at the 'NEC Classic Car Show' in Birmingham, England for the Meguiar’s Concours Showcase Final 2013.
At the show there is a 'Wheeler Dealers live stage' where Mike Brewer interviews people involved with classic cars, Edd China does a Practical Challenge and they both appear to discuss a few of the episodes and display the end results over the three days of the show.
Mike Brewer also has the job of presenting the Meguiar’s Trophy to the Showcase Winner and present the sixteen competitors with a thank you presents for taking part.
Before the show opened to the public Mike Brewer and Edd China would come to look at the cars in the showcase.
One morning I was around when Mike visiting the stand and took the opportunity to chat about the 914 episode and have a photo taken with the 914.
I managed to catch up with Edd and Mike by the live stage after the show had closed and then got a quick chat with Edd.
They were both pleased to see the 914 which had featured at the start of their TV show.
Edd said “The Porsche 914 is a great car”
Very cool story and 914 history.
Love responding to discussion threads that are years dead, but my .02 cents re. their profit margin on this 914 is that they spent quite a bit more on the resto than enumerated at the episode's end. Biggest expense must have been tires - there's NO WAY that they reinstalled age-cracked, flat spotted tires from ten years of sitting back onto this car, yet they don't appear under expenses.
I think that the chap who re-purchased it might've made out a bit better than we give him credit for. Also, Mike's one irritating guy. Edd China does literally all the work and Mike just goes around steam rolling people, yuck.
I purchased the rear trunk lid off of that car. I mounted a luggage rack on it and use it when the wife travels with me. Otherwise it hangs from the garage ceiling.
