I'm trying to replace the electical portion of the ignition switch. I've got the steering wheel, lock nut, switchs, and ignition retaining plate off. I cannot however slide the ignition switch assembly out. Is there something else I am missing?
Do I have to remove the upper steering shaft? (first U-joint back)

There is a spring clip in the side of the ignition housing that you need to push on...

Is that in the ignition switch itself? (ie. to remove the electrical portion from the tumbler/key portion)
Or to remove the entire assembly from the housing?

Okay, found the spring clip to remove the tumbler portion. Managed to remove from steering column.
Found the tiny flat blade screw and got the little electical part out. (Also managed to NOT lose the tiny little spring hiding inside)
Problem, they sold me the wrong part.
The plastic housing on the one I got is the wrong shape, but has the correct connectors, mounting, etc...
I guess it's back to the parts house tomorrow.

There is another V8 914 guy in Santa Rosa.. works for "Firemans Fund" in Novato. I think his name is "Nick". I bought a car from him a few years back.

The switch is interchangable with the same year VW Bug. NOT interchangable with the VW Rabbit (this is the part I was sold by mistake)

Note that the article is only good for the 72-74 switch. The 70-71 is different, as is the 75-76, and the procedure is slightly different in each case.

And I have no idea what the differences actually are....

I am having a similar problem to the issues described in this thread. I need to replace the ignition switch (electrical part) on my '75. I have the wheel and the switch assembly off, and I discovered how to remove the key/tumbler part, but I cannot for the life of me see how to get to the electrical part and the small set screw being mentioned. It is covered by the black plastic shroud which I cannot see how to remove. What am I missing?

Graham,

I JUST did this saturday to remove a melted one from my 75. All I did was remove the wheel and then the turn signal/ wiper stalk assembly. Next you have to remove the retainer collar that holds the bearing in place and if all of the harnesses are undone, the assembly should slide off of the column. Once you have it off, come in from the back and remove the set screw -- its very obvious, and the piece will come out.

Once you do it once you can do it 1000 times.

Thanks, Ben, it worked great! Actually, I had to take off two clips, but after that it came off just fine.
