Is there ment to be a screen between the sheetmetal vent in the cowl area and the fresh air vent?

It seems like alot of stuff gets in there and clogs up the water drain lines?

If there is ment to be something what does it look like and anyone have one

They had a plastic grill at one point (not sure if all of them had it). I went and looked.. none of the cars here have it... but all of them have also been repainted. I think the body shops are tossing them.

I seem to recall reading/hearing that this grille was a change somewhere along the production span. Most of the cars I've seen don't have anything. Lots of the blower motors don't work either...hmmm

My current car has the ventilation system completely gutted. The cowl vent just blasts right into the trunk and up thru the defrost openings on the dash top; so I made a little removable "cover" out of sheet aluminum and I can close it off or open it up as desired. I might actually duct it into the car somehow this summer, for some driver airflow.

Pipe it into the interior... its basically "Ram Air" for free. I kept getting shit in my face under the helmet while driving the tube car and couldnt figure out where all the air was coming from... I put my hand out under this vent area and it moved my hand away (while driving down one of the long back stretches at Buttonwillow) Use it.

They added the plastic screen in 71 or 72, I believe. My car has it.

Most of the time, they get painted body-color when the car is repainted. They're supposed to be black plastic.

It's really easy to break the fresh air blower housing when you remove it. (E.g., to replace the screen, to mask it off for painting, to repair the blower, etc.) I am told that you can at least get some cardboard in between the body and blower by loosening the retaining nuts and sliding the cardboard in. That can help when you paint the car, at least. You may be able to do something similar to put the late-mode screen in there.

If you do remove the blower assembly, be careful as many of them seem to be somewhat fragile any more.

Thanks guys.. I think I may try to slip some wire mesh screen in there and see if that helps. I figure I will not need to secure the screen since the fan assembly should hold it there, in theroy

I've added the plastic screen from the later cars to the early ones. It's a tight fit, but it does go in. Like DD says, be real careful, they do break easy. Best thing I've heard of to keep the blower clean when repainting is the "blow up the balloon between the vent and blower" thing.

I loosened the housing, and slid 3x5 cards under there to protect the area.
