914World.com _ 914World Garage _ DD's "Swap Meat" pics

Posted by: Dave_Darling Apr 28 2003, 04:08 PM

Oh, how it rained! We were all soaked and miserable, huddling around under easy-ups and umbrellas, shivering around bonfires made of magnesium 911 engine cases... rolleyes.gif

It was chilly in the AM (at least, I thought so--some of you guys sure didn't!) but warmed up nicely. I've got a bit of a sunburn and I'm feeling really out of it--still!! (Though all the booze the previous three days probably doesn't help that...) I managed to get the pics downloaded and shrunk for inclusion on the board--and I managed to actually get back over here for a change! (Sorry, but sometimes you have to prioritize.)

Wayne and Tom seem reasonably pleased with the way things went. We may very well have a booth at some of the future swap meets in the Bay Area. smile.gif

As always, it was good to see faces (most familiar, some not) and meet everyone again.

OK, OK--I know I promised pics. Here they are!

There were other pics of B's tube-framer already posted. This is one of the bits I find interesting on the car--upside-down shocks!

Grey inserts in a 914 seat! The seller also had grey basket-weave material to do the dash face in. Could be an interesting alternative...

Pop-top 1.7 pistons and cylinders. I had a close-up of one piston in profile, but the viewfinder was off so it cut off the dome of the piston!! Grr.....

A couple of 2.0 heads. Very few cracks (only saw one or two on the plug bosses, nothing obvious in the exhaust ports).

Those are racing Bilsteins DD (upside down) They sell them that way (which makes them right side up..LOL)

Deeeeeeeeeeeep-dish 2.0 Bus cylinders. The US-spec 914 pistons had a dish, but it was only a third of the depth of this!! (The original European 2.0 pistons also had a dish, but again much shallower than this.)

I actually did get rained on while driving home much later that day. (About 5:30.) There was a nice rainbow over 101 south, but the pics of it did not turn out. sad.gif

Oh, and B--I know what the shocks are and why they're built upside-down. But I still think it's one of the more interesting bits of the car that we got to see that time.

I can't believe Jamie still has that 911! I'd bought it as a whole roller in a heartbeat if it weren't in OR. Now you tell me he had it in NorCal. I wanted that car from the very beginning when he didn't know what he was gonna do with it. But now, well, it's all f'd up. The 911 gods don't like me. That car would have sold for $4000 no engine or trans in five minutes in SoCal. Of course, I would have given only three. LOL. Maybe that's why I don't have one. I still can't believe he still has that car. Pisses me off! mad.gif

Hey... nice to see some familiar faces biggrin.gif

Oh, and Dave... thanks for posting the pics of Jon's car
The one of the rear susp.console hurted!
I think I'll print it and stick it on my car, just as a reminder sad.gif

Dave thanks for the heads up on the Revell model. If it is not sold, whomever was selling let me know what you want for it and or if you have any others. Thanks.
Looks like I will have to make it down next year. Had to pass this year, stayed here to sign papers, closing on a house in Calif.
One thing that I always thought would be neat is a photo of the for sale signs in the cars, those of us not there can see what was for sale and how much.
I did that on a pic from Pomona on the PP site once, called the seller next day and said it was sold to someone who looked at it from the meet. Oh well.

Send 'em my way too would you Dave? Some great shots of areas you don't often get to see often (at least not that well).

OK, I believe Watts really has a 914 now. I was thinking it was a myth for the longest time now.

Great pics as usual Dave. Thanks for posting them.

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 28 2003, 09:13 PM

I think you can still call mine a 914. URY on the other hand is much farther into the gray area.

Posted by: Gint Apr 28 2003, 09:15 PM

Still cross-posting huh?

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 28 2003, 09:22 PM

Yeah, it's monday and I'm feeling out of sorts. Back to the topic at hand... look how easy it is to repair 914 jack posts when you have no rear quarter panels.

Posted by: Gint Apr 28 2003, 09:26 PM

I'm sure you tool all of the foam or whatever the garbage is that the factory stuffed up into the sail panels. Yes?

Posted by: Gint Apr 28 2003, 09:45 PM

Jon,
BTW - I meant to ask, what did you paint that inner fender with?

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 28 2003, 09:51 PM

I got up there as best I could without going hog nuts wild. At first I wasn't going to remove seam sealer but after I did a little and found a little surface where the sealer had dried and receeded so now I'm taking off as much as I can from the underbody, front trunk, etc.

Posted by: Gint Apr 28 2003, 10:18 PM

What kind of paint is that black you used?

Posted by: jonwatts Apr 28 2003, 10:26 PM

Ah yes, here goes the paint debate once again.

I wanted something I could rattle-can on because I was tired of brushing and wearing POR-15. I'll still use POR but on vertical or upside down surfaces a can is nice. So I'd heard of and thought I'd try Zero-Rust. It seems to have a lot of good qualities but a big negative so far is that it seems to scratch off pretty easily. The Zero-Rust folks recommend 3 to 3.5 mils for good coverage, well that's a hella lotta rattle can paint (a 3 mil plastic sheet dropcloth from your local hardware store is what your unemployed cousin would have duct taped to the rear window of his AMC Pacer).

I was going to use leave the fenderwells black with Zero-Rust but now I'm reconsidering painting them along with the rest of the car.

Posted by: Bleyseng Apr 28 2003, 10:40 PM

Yeah Jon, that Por-15 stuff sticks better to skin than anything else. I kinda like the rattle can myself, cheap and easy.
Nice start on a car Jon, always glad to meet some of the other members of the wannabe club. Jenny's car has a ways to catch up to yours. Plus yours wasn't full on water.
