Hi,

Sorry, hit the wrong key.
I need to know what my oil pressure should be. I have a '74 2.0. The pressure gauge reads from 0 to 70. Most of the time it is at 70. Occasionally, when I start the car it stays at 40. I'm not losing much more oil than the orig. owners manual says (i'm using 1 qt/ 400mi) and the engine never runs hot. Could the sensor or the gauge be messed up?
I'm a newbie owner and am not sure how to troubleshoot this.

if the sender and guage are OEM, your figure of merit on oil pressure is 10 psi/1000 rpm. when hot, it may be MUCH lower.

as with all this electric stuff, check you grounds, check the connection to the sender, and MAKE SURE the sender and the guage have good grounds.

yes, it's possible for either the sender or the meter or both to be wonky ...
