914World.com _ 914World Garage _ /6 CHT sensor location

to help dialing in the mixtures and cooling airflows on the new engine i'm planning to run A cylinder head temp guage. 6 is right out. for wire bundle purposes, something on the 1-2-3 bank is preferred - and i figure that side ought to be the hotter of the two, judging from the fan orientation. and i'll probably run it in #2 just for simplicity.

but the 911 spark plug is pretty deep inside the cam box / head and i wonder about running the CHT lead down there.

is there another sensor besides the spark plug washer style?
which of the 6 cylinders actually runs hottest, all other factors being equal ?

The motronic 911s (DME) run the sensor on the #3 cylinder head. You could install it under a head nut on the exhaust side, but I wouldn't. Have a boss machined on the head, spot face it, and drill and tap the hole for an appropriate fastener. The Cap'n

You should be able to still run the spark plug style. The only issue is making sure you bend the tab correctly. It can be quite snug up to the plug body. About the only hassle is ensuring you can still get a socket on and off the plug with the CHT in place. The chief advantages of the at the plug sender are that it's going to get hotter and react faster than any other place on the head. The casting is relatively thin there, so you're closest to the actual combustion heat.

The sensors, btw, are only about $15-20 each from someplace like Aircooled.net. It's the gauges that cost so much. You can rig up a toggle for two cylinders or a 6-way rotary switch for all 6 and still use only one gauge. Lots of wires to run with 6, and I'm unsure the benefits are worth the hassle.

It's pretty easy to move the sender from cylinder to cylinder to determine empirically which cylinder is the hottest. My bet it's one of the cylinders farthest from the fan, and I'd lay money that it's the one next to the oil cooler, if you're running a Six that has one.
