Setting up Nelson's steering and find this. The shaft is too short.
How can that be? The suspension is all bolted up where it goes.

It doesn't look like it's bolted up correctly. That rubber doughnut needs to come up much higher through that hole.
Did you install rack spacers? Did you forget the rearward bolts on the tabs for the steering rack? They need to be seated correctly.

Yes, it is. But that doesn't explain why the rubber doughnut does not come up far enough.

Well, it has a different part number, indicating there's a difference of some kind.

I'm sure I'm going to feel stupid when someone points out what's wrong, but sometimes you can't see for forest for the trees.
These are the exact same parts that were removed from the car.
The bolts in the rack are loose because I'm looking at this problem.

All the bolts need to be tight, including the two i marked in the pic.

They were. I pulled them out to mess with it. Trust me, that's not it.
But, just to be sure, I just put in all the bolts and tightened them up. No change. This thing is like 1.5" out of place.

O'brien ... the bearing is in the correct location ... a plate goes over it. And inside that rubber you will find a caged roller bearing.
There is a length difference between the input shaft of a 911 and a 914 and I don't remember which one is shorter. I just use a 914 rack with the 911 suspension.

When I was there, I left you a steering rack I had left over from my project. Maybe they got mixed up. I am 99% certain it was a 914 rack though.

I know you said this is the rack that came out of it, BUT just to reinforce the fact that they have different shafts.......

Makes sense Joe, I purchased a complete 911 front end, but I would have had to use my (MUCH LONGER) 914 shaft, and I probably attached the 911 one to the old 914 rack.

I think it must be 911. The location of the raised shoulder for the rubber vibration damper is too high on the shaft for 914.

Replace that stock coupler with a solid one (I can't tell from the picture but you may have already). Really a great improvement IMO.

Short shaft problems should stay on the board, as I am sure others are seeking advice on fixing their short shaft
