914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Is this broken exhaust stud boss bad?

Posted by: jasons Jan 21 2012, 02:41 PM

I ruined a 2.0 head. It had a stripped helicoil on an exhaust stud. I drilled it over size and tapped it for an insert. I don't think I tapped deep enough and I broke the exhaust stud boss. headbang.gif

Now the only option is a new head. And that really means 2 new heads if I do things how they should be done. If I could find a good used 2.0 head, I would use it. But I have to assume any used 2.0 head has issues. At least that's how I would play the odds.

Worst part is, I was planning on selling this car to focus on another 914 project. I didn't want this car to become a project. Maybe I will offer it "as is", with full disclosure of the problem. Sucks, but I try to remember some people have real problems.

Heads can be welded

agree.gif That can be repaired.

I recently had some 912 heads repaired (cracks at studs, missing material at the exhaust ports and broken fins) ...

After:

... wasn't too expensive either.

Who will do the repair? I'm pretty sure Len wouldn't touch it.

Actually I will. A screwed up ex stud boss by itself is not a killer. If otherwise the casting is in good condition we can rock on. I routinely weld in new bosses for remachining. If your interested in what knocks a head out of consideration for my services read this.

Cool! I'm pretty sure my heads meet that criteria. However, what happens if you get the single head and find something else like spark plug cracks? Also what does your turnaround time look like these days?
