It's a long way off but if I complete some work then I'm in. Camping? You have that much room in your back yard? If my tents a shakin then don't come a knockin.

As long as there's a place to
then I'm good

Sounds like this is coming together nicely! Hey Joe, Any change we could take a parade lap around the Speedway?

Series 9 has that much room in the back yard, and it's stumbling distance from the DZ bar.

Looking forward to Daytona, and since it coincides with the HSR weekend maybe you could stage a 914 show infield?
Last year it was the Ford Mustang club... it would be great to see a bunch of Porsches.
Good luck getting permission for a track lap. Best bet: work something out with HSR.

Ya, dude I'm really not liken that mental image...
My wife is the same. Her idea of camping is staying at a motel 6 instead of the Monte Carlo. That's as close to camping as were getting. the down side is we need to get back to the hotel without
after
We may end up camping anyway...

Here's the latest:
The AX portion of the event has hit some cones. The DeLand Airport is interested in ending motorsports on the field. To that end, they are not granting new applications to use the AX runway. After speaking with the organizations that are still currently grandfathered to use the facility, they have all told me that the pavement has become very deteriorated. Each group is looking for a new place to run because the city won't fix the asphalt.
We have two possibilities here, find another place to run or find something else to do for that portion of the event.
Since I recently purchased a boat, I'm considering setting up a trip to (Google:) Disappearing Island out in Ponce Inlet for all of us. My only concern would be the possibility of cool weather in early November for a water-based event.
More to follow......
Posted by: seanery Jun 4 2012, 09:09 AM
Is anyone planning on having an empty passenger seat? I'm not sure my 951 would make the trip. It needs some love - and my teener, well, its just starting its renewal process...

What's wrong with the 95? I used to drive mine on long trips.
Posted by: seanery Jun 7 2012, 10:03 AM
I've driven it all over from denver to pensacola to new jersey. It just needs some love right now and it's my dd so I'm kinda stuck putting it in the shop. And I think it's gonna be a can of worms - shocks, brakes, clutch(?)...Im just Leary about long trips with it at the moment. It didn't like sitting in storage for 3 years while I was touring.

Something to think about ! I plan to attend in November, I have Three options, hotel in DeLand, Time share in Daytona, or drive the RV down and park in camping area. The reason for bringing up the RV is I can bring down from the Atlanta Area , people without a car, engine from Jake Raby, large parts. I can only tow one car, mine, but can tote a lot of stuff in a 32' class A . Any thoughts?
Posted by: CG-914 Jul 2 2012, 05:22 PM
Sorry for not getting back so long!
I still have to fix my engine after a wannabe "rebuilt" it...
But another member here is more than helping me and the chances are good, so I might make it to Daytona
Where is the price now? (plus +one)
Posted by: ThePaintedMan Jul 10 2012, 03:57 PM
I can confirm that I'll be there for sure. But I have one request. Can I ride (or drive) in someones car for just a few minutes at some point? As much fun as I have had driving mine off and on, I have yet to ride in a well sorted car. A bonus would be a 2.0 or even a six (T.C. has officially sold both his before I got a chance to ride). Looking forward to seeing everyone!
Posted by: Madswede Jul 10 2012, 04:52 PM
There will be two 914 RS O'Brien specials there, and I'm sure James will have his six there if he goes. The problem will be finding enough space to run 'em out a bit, but I'm sure Joe will come up with something. Looks like we won't be able to use the runway for real fun, so being on the streets means we gotta avoid any issues with the po-po.
Quite frankly, I'm going to be scared of my car. I'll be trying to learn how to handle it in just a few days.

Is the cost still the same? I'll be there.
What camping arrangements are available? It's been a while since I have camped in tent....might be getting a hotel!

FYI Joe, I sent you payment about 2-3 weeks ago, check your Paypal.
Is anyone bringing parts with them? I would be ever so grateful if any of you have an extra rear bumper and/or valence that you would be willing to bring with you. Condition isn't important, the rustier the better.

T.C., I'm not talkin about GT parts now, you know I'm not in your league Its not a necessity or a hurry, I was just thinking since we'll all be there anyway, it would be convenient to pick one up then if someone was trying to get rid of some stuff, rather than me have to ship it across country. Next time I'm over hanging out, it'd be cool to see whatcha got. Thanks man! Can't wait till Nov....
Posted by: carr914 Sep 6 2012, 06:39 PM
No they aren't GT Parts, just a Black Rear Bumper & Regular Rear Valance.
Give me a Call, I may be over in Clearwater on Saturday looking at a 914 For Sale

So Jon how are all of us out west going to see your car? Do you feel that it will make it any easier to get time off for the R66 or the RRC? Not with your management. Maybe some motivation to come I'am sure.

Not easier, you're right. But I'm still gonna try like hell anyway. I've been absent too long from the RRC and Rt66. If nothing else, having the car will be motivation to drive and show her off.

Verena and I should get there between 9 and 10PM with my IMSA car on a trailer.
I'd like to offload it Thursday night so it can be stored inside your shop if possible.
I can always keep it at the Clarion that night if I get there too late.

Oh yeah just throw TC out of the plane without a chute, he's so full of hot air that he floats... good luck TC with the jump.......LOL

What a fantastic time!
I'm so happy with our sponsors and restaurants for having everything set up perfectly.
I know there are many more 914 guys in Florida. Next year, I'm shooting for 30 cars.
If you were here, I want your feedback. I'm thinking about moving it back to September for next year so it will be warmer. Of course, then we run the risk of actual tropical weather.....
Posted by: carr914 Nov 12 2012, 11:35 AM
I think the weather this Time of Year is Great. Sept can still be hot as Hell & Hurricanes can definately come in.
The fact that we had it the same weekend as a HSR Vintage Race in Daytona was definately a good bonus. I just led the guys straight to the Track, but I'm sure that you could have made a good Road Trip on off-beat roads.

The time was perfect . Thanks Joe I had a good time. Can't wait to next year the cooler the better.

Everything we did was great and I would keep it all for next year.
I liked the cooler weather as well.
If a lot of people come on Thursday next year that would be nice because it would
be longer. Time to just hang out and talk with no events on thursday would be nice.
The HSR tie in was a highlight for me.
Seeing and hearing 120 skydivers link up into a giant formation right over Series 9
was awesome too. The sound of 120 people free falling was like a jet engine running
and then seeing them peel off in all directions to open their chutes was amazing.

I agree that the cooler the weather and the HSR connection. I loved the Island trip...even though it wasn't warm enough for us Florida folks to want to get into the water! Ponce inlet is fantastic and a real site to see. The Saturday trip was fun...Flagler beach and the scenic drive was the bomb! We just need to keep thinking of ideas for the Saturday afternoon part. We did get back a bit early and there was quite a bit of downtime before we went to dinner. I'm sure we can think of something to fill the gap. The 1st annual was a blast and we can't thank Joe enough for putting this together...Well done!!

Though I didn't make it till late Friday night and missed the HSR stuff and island, I have to say that the best part would still have been meeting all of you. I enjoyed hearing each of your stories of not only your cars, but your lives. Bill's engineering prowess and over ten years of tweaking was evident with his beautiful car along with his wife's patience and love, Brian's work to get his car running by Thursday and his wife's sense of humor, Joe and Megan's carefree attitude and willingness to go out of their way to accommodate us, Kenny's great smile and genuine interest in everyone else's cars, Bob and Greg for bringing a Georgia state of mind, James and his immaculate car and love for racing, Paul and T.C., my best buds from Tampa, John and Verena for their graciousness and fun-loving personalities, Jon and his wife and for camping alongside me in the garage and Sean and Nelson for the never-ending controlled chaos.
I wan't to extend a personal thanks to all of you for not only putting up with my work in progress being allowed to sit beside all of your cars, but also for welcoming me with open arms and giving me continued inspiration. I can't count how many times each of you told me "not to quit" and that I was going in the right direction. I can't imagine how someone would want to quit on these cars; with such a great group of people to hang out with, the blood sweat and tears are all worth it.
Can't wait for next year!

I PM'd him yesterday. Had to flatbed it back, it was the Suby part that broke. Once he got home, he had it fixed in 30 minutes.
Posted by: d914 Nov 13 2012, 07:11 AM
We were that close to driving it home.... And we got really good at pulling the swing arm and redoing the cv's.... The Suby part was just a clip that came off from all the other gyrations that we put ir through... Bob figured it out no sooner than we loaded on the trailer!
I had a great time seeing actually running 914 's and yes it really is the people . Hopefully with a little luck my little beastie will be able to show up.. Either way , Porsche support vehicle or with a 914 I'll be there again .
Thanks to all who put in the work and time putting this together.
Posted by: Madswede Nov 13 2012, 01:45 PM
I had a great time! All the events went off without any real hitches (OK, a CV joint or two and a fuel pump failure aside) and seems like everyone had a blast. Kenny saved the day with a new fuel pump. I still say the old one woulda worked if someone had whacked it with a BFH.
It really is all about the folks that go. I had a great opportunity to meet a lot of the Floridians that I don't get a chance to see at the events nearer my home (as in, sub-12-hr drives our states are just too damn big out here).
Some of my favorite highlights:
Boating and grilling (sans utinsils - O'Brien doesn't believe in them for some reason, so there was some extra "ginger" on some of the hot dogs). I'm not gonna say what "SWAG" stands for, or at least what TC thinks it does ... something to do with our conversation. Think you had to be there.
The utterly gorgeous drives to and from Snack Jack's out at Flagler Beach. Thanks to TC for the ride out and thanks to James (ellisor3) for the ride back. By the way, congrats on winning Best in Show James! "Sexy" deserved it!
There were some really gorgeous cars there, let's be clear. It was a very beautiful collection of 914s, one of the best I've seen. The race cars that Paul (URY914) and John (FourBlades) brought were pieces of engineering art - total function over form, especially Paul's - which I voted for for "Best Interior" - it sounds like it is, a real racer. I was too scared to ask to drive it.
Bill's (WLD914) 2.8L water-injected /4 is a screaming monster ... he was keeping up with the RS and James' car without really seeming to care about torturing a poor lil' 901 transmission! He's a really cool guy to hang with too.
John also deserves a special note for actually bringing up his (as in, he MADE it) archtop guitar for me and George (PaintedMan) to bang around on a little bit after dropping off his wife back at home. It's rare to see someone who can not only work on cars but also build guitars, let alone the Hold Grail that is an archtop. Well done sir!
George took his "Worst 914" award (a total award and really his car was by far the best car I've ever seen to win such an award) with good grace and humor - though he tried to "forget" it at one of the beer parlors we visited but I intervened in time. Seriously George, your car was just up against some stiff competition. If Bobby's had still been there it would've taken that award I think.
As the duly-appointed representative of Team NARP, I have to say TC reminded me a lot of Joe Sharp. It's too bad the two of you guys couldn't meet, but that might have precipitated the end of the world to have that much coolness in one place. TC took his plunge out of a perfectly good airplane with grace and aplomb, if not a big side of queasiness. I know exactly how you felt TC, believe me!
Bob (BIGKAT) and Greg (d914) were super-cool to meet and talk to about racing and the benefits of having no qualms about modifying the hell out of your 914. I think Bob was the first one there and he had the furthest to go with a 914. Sorry that CV from my New Mexico yard didn't quite do the trick, but I'm gratified that it helped ... or something.
The "other" Jon, Brian, and your wives I very much enjoyed meeting and talking to. I'm very glad you took lots of pics Brian - I had forgotten my camera back here in NM, and I always "check my brain at the door" of these events, making some memories a little hazier than others ...
Speaking of that, I have to give my friend Sean a little grief here and there for close-talking and, well, just being a riot - that's Sean. I know our mutual NM friends are gonna definitely give him some serious grief for the drunk-dialing he did around 2am FL time. THAT was priceless, and even if I was the only one who witnessed it in FL, I nominate him for the honorary "That Guy" award that we out here in the west know and love from the Red Rocks events.
Well, I've used up my whole lunch break typing this marathon post. It was really great to meet you folks and I hope know this won't be the last time. TR1 was a blast and looks to be a very good event for all Southeastern US 914s to be at.
Last but not least, a big Thanks Joe! It worked out very well! And Megan too for helping (somewhat reluctantly) with the awards announcements, and Kim and Bobby deserve thanks for helping with logistics.

Made it home on Sunday... The problem with the CV joint was that both the inner and outer were bad. I think the outer caused the inner to break a holding ring. I had the car fixed in 30mins after getting it home.

What else can be said? My wife and I had a great time. We're already looking forward to the 2nd annual Tropical Ramble. A Big Thanks to Joe and everyone that attended or helped make it such a success. It was nice to put faces with names. We hope to see everyone again soon. I'm sure this event will grow over the years to come.
I'd also like to publicly thank Kenny for bailing me out with his spare fuel pump during the scenic drive to Flagler Beach. I owe you one! Everyone pitched in to diagnose and repair my car by the side of the road. It ended up to just be a small delay and something to talk about. I wish Bob would've had the same luck with his cv joint.
You were right, FourBlades. I should've bought a new tire before I left Deland. Who would've thought I'd get another flat on the way home Sunday after having one on the way to the Ramble Thursday night. Oh well, I've got two new tires mounted now and a few new road stories. My wife must really love me (or the car).
Maybe I can give George some competition for the "Most Improved" award next year.
I've enjoyed everyone's pics. It really was a great event. Cheers.

QUOTE(Madswede @ Nov 13 2012, 02:45 PM)
I had a great time! All the events went off without any real hitches (OK, a CV joint or two and a fuel pump failure aside) and seems like everyone had a blast. Kenny saved the day with a new fuel pump.
I still say the old one woulda worked if someone had whacked it with a BFH.
It really is all about the folks that go. I had a great opportunity to meet a lot of the Floridians that I don't get a chance to see at the events nearer my home (as in, sub-12-hr drives
our states are just too damn big out here).
George took his "Worst 914" award (a total
award and really his car was by far the best car I've ever seen to win such an award) with good grace and humor - though he tried to "forget" it at one of the beer parlors we visited but I intervened in time.
It was really great to meet you folks and I
hope know this won't be the last time.
Wait, that took you all Lunch Break to Write, it smelled like you wrote it in the Shitter

Maybe we should ask the Captain. After all he is our Pilot and is his event.
Well go wake him up from his Rip Van Winkle Nap. Last Year he started planning this in Feb and it is now Aug.
The HRS Race part was great and a good time filler on Friday, but we had to get back to do the Boat Trip. Last year we a had a big lull on Saturday after the drive to Flagler & before Dinner
So, as a Suggestion, do the Boat Trip on Friday, then on Saturday, we do the drive, eat an early lunch, then drive to Daytona for the HRS Races, then back to Deland for Dinner
