914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Why so Few Tail Mounted Spoilers on Street Cars

Posted by: RickS Feb 14 2012, 09:24 PM

I remember when 1 out of every 2 914s had a little spoiler sitting on the rear trunk. Now I only see them on teener racers. Is it too high of a poser factor, totally unkuhl, a fashion trend, instigated by aliens from Mars?

Inquiring Minds Want to "NO".

Mine came with one. Until I can find something else to plug up the 4 holes in the rear trunk lid, it stays right where it's at mad.gif

best one I have ,unfortunately it requires 20 screws.
actually conformed to rules of straight plane 2" high. from years ago.
was screwed to my yellow six since 1974.
I have since put on a nos trunk lid keeping it stock.

FYI I have the mold, and it can be attached with different methods.
here is a pic of one i had made in carbon fiber.

Left mine off cause it made it hard to see out the back when I'm parking it biggrin.gif

I don't mind one on the right car. However the rear lid is usually fuched by the installation

They never fit well unless you fiberglass them in and then you've screwed up the lid for sure.

Posted by: jimkelly Feb 15 2012, 05:52 AM

the duck looks good.

but unless the spoiler is taller than the roof line - my understanding is that it won't get enough air to perform a function.

less weight - more speed : )

My 70' came with a rear wing that must weigh a ton with all the bondo used to try and smooth over the gap between the lid and wing. Thing is so heavy that PO never installed a lock or hold down clips, it doesn't move, even if clearing railroad tracks. blink.gif

Rear spoiler on a 914 never has looked right to me.

Posted by: sixnotfour Feb 15 2012, 08:01 AM

they also keep the back of your 914 dirty

Looks like SHIT & doesn't do anything except ruin fenders and trunk lids ....

Just my opinion though

I installed the duck spoiler on all 5 of my cars. Just like the way it looks. Ray

Anything other than the duck tail style does not look good!

Some of the duck tails have nice lines and proportions - others not so much....

Back in the day it seemd that most 240z's and 914's had them.

I'd be interested in one of the nicely proportioned ones if anybody has one for sale at a good price.

I think I have a way of mounting that won't affect the deck lid!

I always thought a 959 replica wing would look good:

I like this one. It is part of the deck lid.

in 70 they couldn't, 72 up every racer had one, or want to be..

It's a timeline in history, was not allowed then allowed, some like, some do not, and in vogue, then out , then do what you like.... beer.gif

They are like the mullet. Cool in the 80's but now.....not so much.

When I get my hair cut, I'm going to have a righteous mullet. At least for a couple minutes... long enough to take a picture.

Eh, I like the duck tail, and my car had one when I bought it so I kept it.

If the trunk had been undrilled, I don't think I would have put one on. But I think they finish the back of the car.
