I don't have any grills for the fog lights and was wondering if there's any real reason for the grills anyway? Do they supply critical air to anything? I am thinking of maybe not running fog lights at all and just closing those huge openings up with dark (blacked out) tinted Lexan inserts, since I have early style black bumpers (fiberglass). I could even maybe do cutouts, perfect sized cutouts for the foglights also - but would that look dumb you think? I think the closed-up openings would give a much cleaner and minimual look.. has anyone done something similar?

i think glassing in the square and leaving an openeing for the lights could be cool. black bumper...would look trick

That's kinda what I was thinking.... how about smaller fog lights - would that be getting into the RICE realm?

The horns also sit back there, so it will muffle those if you close them off all the way. I just added some of the pilot lights to my car, but don't feel like buying some overprices fog light grills, so I am probably going to make some custom covers out of alum sheet...I thought about doing that with some smaller/differnt fogs, but the pilots were too good of a price.

I say go for it...I have seen one car with clear lexan and big square fogs, and didn't like the look much, smoked would look much better.

The PO covered mine with clear Lexan,really looked dumb I vote for glassing over then cut out for a fog lite.

Doug I thought about that for a while. If you look at the early 8 cylinder 914s that were built, I think just 2 of them, you will see that they have no opening of any kind in the front bumper where the foglite grilles are located on your front bumper.

If a person wanted to spend the time and money you could recreate this same bumper and either leave them closed or put in a hole for something like the Pilot lites or whatever.

And yes you are getting into the rice cooker withe smaller lites.

Doug, also I have bunches of the factroy fog lite grilles, If you have the black bumper you could paint them black to match and install the Pilot lites along with the stainless steel brackets.

Brumos Porsche from Jacksonville run several customer 914's at historic events (HSR). At least one of their cars uses a blank FG bumper, without grills but with small round cutouts for modern small diameter beam type lights (or whatever they are called). I thought they looked fine. I also think a blank bumper with round cutouts for standard size driving lights would look good.

By the way, at one event I started a conversation with one of the Brumos mechanics and he indicated that the Brumos racing shop sells fiberglass bumpers, valences, rockers and flares to the public. I don't know anymore about this, but the guality of fit looks good on their cars. Of course they have a group of professional mechanics/fabricators on hand to fit the stuff. My results would probably vary...

Doug,

I put a black plate in my black fiberglass bumpers and didn't care for the look. I think it kinda needs something to visually break up that bumper surface.

I ended up buying some new plastic grills (2 for 80.00) and painting them gray. Wish I'd known boxtr has all those grills for sale.

Below is a pic with one pilot light installed. I'm gonna try to get the other one installed this weekend. At the AX, drivers will ask me if the other hole cools my brakes. I just say "yup".

Black expanded metal "could" look cool.

i had an early front bumper that the PO welded plates over the fog light openings.........

i thought it looked pretty good....bumper was black

I traded my grilles that had fog light holes in them for some without holes. I think it has meaner look to it.
Now if I could just find a bumper without bumper tits.

I made very simple aluminum covers as I have f/g bumpers and no lights installed at present. The above post is correct that an all-black bumper just doesn't look "right" IMHO so what I did is paint the covers body color. I'm still not certain I like it, so I may repaint the lower portion+covers (and the side rockers) grey, leaving the top "rubber" part black as per stock.

I always thought having grills in the front bumper that gives no cool factor stupid. But they do look better than having the large flat airdam of a bumper alone. I would like to see just the fogs showing, post some pics.

The only acceptable option I have seen is that car with the pop-ups deleted, and what looks like 2 sets of Cibies mounted in the bumper.

Blue car... sorry, I know it's on Pelican somewhere.

i went from grills with no lights to fog grills with pilot driving lights. the pilot lights are really bright and add a lot of light. i think they look ok, too. i like leaving the headlamps down at dusk and using only the pilot lights

I just took two pieces of clear plexiglass and painted the backside and cut them to fit the openings. I think it looks good.

What I thought was silly is that Hank & GT Racing at the time I bought my front f/g bumper, did not sell it without the foghorn grille areas cut out. And they are -cut- out!

I would like to have another bumper with the area simply glassed-in, and then keep this one for if/when I have foghorn lights on the car. Not real high on "The Li$t", though...

The first one is a fiberglass rear bumper. Just cut out the holes for your fog lights. The second one is a fiberglass front bumper with the normal cutouts filled in and recut for the lights.
