914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Magnesium VS. Aluminum Tranny !

Posted by: ajracer Sep 12 2004, 07:59 AM

Seems from looking through this site that the boys
have some good experience and might be able to
help out this newcomer.

I am doing a 901 to 915 tranny conversion (V8) and
wanted to know in buying a 915 tranny if their is
much difference in the strength of the Magnesium
Case vs. Aluminum Tranny Case. Is it really worth
taking the extra time and money to locate Aluminum
unit if I can find a good magnesium case from a
1978 911 with about 100K. ?? What should I expect
to pay to get a good one.

Other question is regarding regular rebuild on the
915 tranny if not abused do they require syncos,
etc after 100K, 150K or 200K+

Anyone Got any good info or ideas on doing a custom
shifter linkage, etc to connect from Stock typer shifter
to a 915 Tranny, any help or info is appreciated.

Thanks; appreciate your comments and reply.

Speaking of which, is there a consensus as to the relative strength of the early aluminum 901 boxes and the latter magnixĂ sium 901 trannies ?
