914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Show me your oil cooler

Posted by: BravoHotel May 4 2003, 07:40 PM

I bid on a complete 914 oil cooler setup on ebay last week...it was an RSR type air dam w/ cooler, lines, filter adapter, etc...went for like $305 and my max bid was $300. Doh! Did someone here get it?

Anyway, here is my real problem: I need an external oil cooler. My temps at the track have been 230+, and that was on a 75 degree day. What I have been thinking about is using the GT replica bumper and front valence which both have cutouts for a cooler (I like the look). My question is: Where does the hot air vent? Did the "real" GT's have cutouts behind the bumper to vent the air? Is anyone running a setup like this or something similar? Any inputs/pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks

This is what the factory GT used. Several vendors sell a fiberglass replica. The air vents out the bottom of the trunk.

Here is what the factory cooler looks like in the chassis.

I guess that setup wouldn't work for me since I have a fuel cell sitting right where that ducting, etc would need to go. Anybody have any suggestions?

How do you feel about the 75-76 look ?? I know a lot of people (90% of the west coast 914 racers) that use the 75-76 bumper replicated in Fiberglass. You can mount things to the front of the tub, but behind the replica bumper.

This is one without the air dam... but you get the idea of what and how people do.

This is what it looks like with the air dam (and a win..LOL)

Is the cooler mounted some distance from the tub? Where does the hot air go? What is the advantage of the late bumper?...is it that the bumper is thicker front to back so that you can mount the cooler further away from the tub? Maybe I should just buy the RSR style air dam w/ the oil cooler cutout and be done with it...the look just doesn't do anything for me.

I hear you.

The thought behind the late bumper: it is more aerodynamic than the stock type early bumper (every single competetive 914 racing at the SCCA Runoffs runs this bumper or a variation of it)

The rules also state that you cannot run a air dam that extends past any of the stock car.

This bumper allows you to run some giant brake coolling ducts in the air dam.

The cooler is mounted about 2 inches from the tub and NO cutting behind it. The front trunk is solid. The cooler just needs air flowing over it. There is no way the air in this config can get trapped behind the cooler. It works fine.

This is what it looks like behind the bumper.

As long as you dont PUNT people very often.. this setup work well and allows you to have a fuel cell in the front trunk.

Does it stick out too far to use an old style fiberglass bumper w/ a big ol' hole in the middle? I just don't particularly dig the look of the late bumpers. My car is fun street/DE car and not a true race car...so I kinda care what I looks like.

what type/brand of cooler is that? How did they run the lines?

I typically use Fluidyne coolers.

I ran the lines thru the little black grommets that "plug" into the the tub up front and into the factory GT routing holes.

I have been contemplating puting in a oil cooler, the car wont see the track till im 18, actually it might if my dad takes it, but I think he'll have more fun with his track 951 (hehe, loved learning to drive in that thing). Personally I dont want to keep all the trunk space as possible and keep my car looking as a daily driver, cops bad. Yes I need to use the front license plate as well, What can i do? I would love to put the cooler up front, I dont have a cooler yet aside from like 2 stock one's so if its possible i was thinking of making an 'opening' on the side of the flares, and having air for the intake, and air for the oil cooler, possibly even useing a 930 slant type scoop, too rice? too 930 ish? If you guys think its a good idea, ill make a drawing or photoshop a pic of one and show you guys what Im thinking.. Thanks!!!
