914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Interest for a GB on NLA E-brake cable boot #914 424 592 00

Posted by: A&PGirl Mar 1 2012, 11:55 AM

I have been talking with Mark (Mikey914) about making the NLA E-brake cable boot p/n 914 424 592 00. Would anyone else be interested in a new pair of boots?

Mark would be making the parts. He told me a rough turnaround would be 4-6 weeks for the mold and the first parts.

This would be an exclusive run at my request. I would be selling/shipping the boots to you.

Here is a picture of the boot. Most are either torn, broken, paint spattered, brittle or missing all together.

A separate GB thread will be created in 3 weeks. Keep signing up to reserve a pair for you!

Maybe A&P is willing to pay for the development cost up front?

Plus, (and I don't want to speak for Mark) in my experience it's a lot easier being the manufacturer than dealing with retail and distributon.

Since I am providing the part and cause I asked and I'm an all round nice person... grouphug.gif , it boils down to because Mark said so.

Hope this explanation satisfies everyone.

I will need to go check my stash, but I am 99% certain that I bought a set of these from Eric/PMB Performance last year when I bought new cables. Are you sure that they are NLA?

Correction: they are included in the full cable assemblies that I bought from Eric, at a very reasonable price, I might add.

Posted by: nathansnathan Mar 1 2012, 08:28 PM

#34 on this page says they are nla and it looks like they are the same for all years. The repro there is $9.50

P/N 914 424 591 00, right?

According to my list, I have a set of brand new Porsche ones. Are people interested in the mate to 914 424 592 00?

The person who mentioned the heater cable boot. According to my list, I have a set of Porsche and Chinese made ones.

If there is interest, I'll ask Mark about the matching e-brake cable boots and start a new thread for it. Now to go dig it out. I need a digging smiley.

Keep adding to this thread if you would like new boots! type.gif

It really boils down to what I've got funding to do tooling for. Carrie wanted to do these and was willing to step up to pay the tooling and handle distribution on these.
So yes I can make and sell to her to handle these. As you might have noticed I do have a few bucks out in tooling right now.

Here's an update for everyone.

I have figured out how to get the boot off without damaging the NLA parts. first.gif
I need to pickup a Aircraft quality swagging tool & cable cutter. It looks like they'll have to be ordered from Aircraft Spruce.

Yes, for a Big Aviation Town you can't get this local. screwy.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 8 2012, 01:07 AM

Carrie,
You may wish to detail the disassembly and re-assembly to help those that will be changing these out later.

Posted by: A&PGirl Jul 17 2012, 01:08 PM

Resurrecting from the dead. slap.gif

The problem I ran into X time back was how to get the NLA boot off the NLA cable without damaging it or the boot.

My choices are:

1) Pick a Swag end and cut it off sawzall-smiley.gif
2) Get really, really creative and make the cable & boot slicker than cow slobber and get the boot off that way. screwy.gif

Issues:

1) Finding a replacement swag fitting. Expecting people to learn how to swag at aircraft levels and buy the appropriate tools. Cable will also be critically too short.
2)Bust the fingers and perhaps the boot ~stay tuned I going to try this afternoon

This is where I am. I will be playing with various lubricants to get the boot off than back on. So if you're still interested go ahead and post to this thread.

If I am successful, yes reproduction will go forward at more of a rapid pace.

Posted by: A&PGirl Aug 28 2012, 12:10 PM

Update-

We're looking at doing them with injection molding. Mikey's hoping to get a quote back by the end of the week.

Skinny on injection molding pros:

More parts produced per mold (100p vs 1000p)
Less rubber used (less cost on rubber/less time used/less cost)
Quicker turn around time

Skinny on injection molding cons:

Expensive to make the mold
More expensive for machine time.

I'm in for 2

Posted by: A&PGirl Sep 30 2012, 08:49 AM

Just wanted to update everyone on where we are in the process.

Mikey and I are going to look at all the quotes for injection molding the boots and come to a decision based on the information contained in the quotes.

The longest "waste" time period in this was getting the quotes from the various injection molding manufacturers, but I anticipate things moving a bit faster after a manufacturer has been chosen.

By going the injection molding route, this lowers the overall tooling cost per boot, substantially lowers the rubber cost per boot (less waste) and more boots can be made to tighter specs.

Don't worry, it still looks like these boots will be available for Christmas. happy11.gif santa_smiley.gif

I have to finish the drawings for the tooling on these. The parts are still a ways out, but they shoul dbe ready to ship in about 6-8 weeks. These are going to Carrie tomorrow.

I'm interested and it is on my "List" of things to buy in the header of my build thread. My list probably only has 1/4 of what I really need. I'm guessing literally a 100 things before I'm done.

So...I'm trying to put together several "Large" orders rather than 100 individual ones.

First supplier to say..."I have that, and that, and that,...probably wins a big, easy order.

Steve,
You gotta understand that the tooling probably costs $1,000s, and the market is limited. If we want NLA custom parts made for us we have to expect to pay folks a premium to produce them.

I fully agree and I think the factory charged around $17 a piece anyway...
I am totally appreciative of the effort. I hope they can sell enough to make this worthwhile and to justify making more NLA parts.
I am just a CSOB 914 owner.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 17 2012, 12:24 PM

Tooling was expensive, and the number we had to make was large, so I helped Carrie out with these an held some of the inventory to make it viable.

This was a part she was committed to making and is not a hugely commercial part that most 914 guys will probaly live without.

Posted by: scotty b Dec 19 2012, 09:22 PM

I shipped these to Carrie on the 7th, looks like she just got them yesterday, so I suspect they are just going out. Not quite sure why it took so long, but maybe it has something to do with the volume of shipping for the holidays?

Anyhow, these should be in her hand now.
