914World.com _ 914World Garage _ rear wheel bearing stuck

Posted by: seanery Sep 15 2004, 02:22 PM

any ideas?

passenger side came right out.
driver side doesn't seem to move at all.

I'm using a 3lb hammer and a 36mm 1/2 drive socket with 8" extension.

I have a 5 lb hammer, but no room to swing it under the car.

you could try warming the trailing arm/housing up with a blow troch or a heat gun?

I beat mine out using an old front shock :-)

slide hammer and pull it. Use a wheel adapter or a piece of steelbolted to three of the studs. I had the same issue. Pounded on it for two days. The side worked beautifully... Not my idea....got it here...

Had the same problem with mine ('73) a couple of years ago. It seemed that the suspension bushings were absorbing too much of the "smack" from the BFH. Ended up pulling the suspension arm and working it on the bench, came right out. Only problem was that since I had it this far apart.... wink.gif

Same exact scenario on mine...passenger side came out with a 3lb'r in minutes...drivers side beat beat beat and nothing. I ended up putting the socket on backwords (gave me another 2"), disconnected the shock so I could lower the trailing arm alittle more...then used the BFH and it came out in about 5 bangs.

I have a tool that I used. It is 2 aluminum plates and 4 threaded rods with nuts. I used it to pull and push the bearings and bushings off and on when I rebuilt my front and rear suspension. It really is simple and worked great.

you're welcome to use it if you need it. It could also be handy when putting the bearings back in.

I've never done this (but need to), so I'll ask: is pulling the trailing arms really that much of a big deal? Seems to me that once you have the axles and hubs apart to get at the bearing in the first place, that removing the arm is a pretty minor extra step. The idea of whacking on the thing while under the car with a big hammer while its up on stands doesn't sound too pleasant, nor does it sound like a heathly thing for the trailing arm bushings.

I thought that same thing, too.
BUT, if those suckers come off I want to put some Mueller bearings in....and I don't have the dough for that right now.

I turned the socket around (more contact area on the bearing) and broke out the bigger hammer.
With only a few bruises on my wrist smash.gif it finally came out.
