Tried searching for awhile, I remember threads about those gear reduction starters, IHI or something, Where ths best place to buy? its for my 911
The Bosch SR86X has a higher rating than stock. Kennedy Engineered Products sells one that they make themselves....all new parts instead of the Bosch remans.
Pricey though...
should a been more specific, a high torque lightweight starter, kinda like the tillton starter but I think japanese made
Hi Tim,
I just got an IMI hi-torque starter from a guy who sells on : www.thesamba.com in the classifieds, do a search for Serrano. It works a lot better than the stock 914 unit. I did have to stretch a hump in the trunk floor to make it fit though. I did not weigh it, but it is smaller, and I think lighter as well. It was $180 delivered. Good luck!

I bought a new Japaneese High Torque Starter on ebay for $95.00
There is a guy in So. Cal who sells starters on ebay, I'll try to find the link.
Um.. JOHN... all you have to do is re-clock the starter. We do it all the time. Pull the bolts out of the adapter on the front and re-clock the mount. NO need for metal shaping.
I use the IMI Hi Torque.

Hi Brad,
Well duh! Shit, I guess metal stretching is on my mind to the exclusion of the painfully bleeding obvious! Thanks for making me feel like an idiot (insert sheepish yet smily emoticon).

Brad can I Worldpac that part?
or gimme a hint on the source?
I wonder who makes tiltons starters?
BOSCH 1.5 HP Starter
Part # 916.604.101.X
Really works great in my 914-6
Why do you need a hi-torque for a 9 elebin? I bought a 1.5 hp from Oklahoma Foriegn for $ 50.00 out right. They have an over stock and want to move some of them.
One of the mfgrs of the "lightweight, gear reduction" is R&B Performance. It is a Nippondenso with a different nose. I've got a call into him to see if he will sell outright to the club. More tomorrow!
See http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=7882&st=20 There was some info about hi torque starters.
How about http://www.paragon-products.com/ Have you asked them. Somebody recommended them long time ago and they should have hi torque starters. See http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/pp914.hts.htm
Here is a link to the Hi Torque Starter on Ebay:

Ok, for you club members, I have talked to Ron at RB Performance. He will sell the hi-torques to club members at $150.00 each. Contact information:

He takes the gear reduction starter and machines a new nose for it. So, there ya go.
Wasn't there an issue of the "too cheap to be true" ebay starters not fulley disengaging the flywheel without adding a custom spacer? Seems like I remember that from an earlier thread.
TimT,
buy direct from IMI. They work everytime. They have two versions. I also sell them/stock them also (just hate self promoting)
B
John,
I dont promote because we cant handle the number of requests currently. If I made ANY attempt to push parts I would need 1-2 more people in the shop for phones and shipping. The number of walk ins/emails/phone calls is overwhelming as it is. Most of my day is full of interuptions while I'm trying to be billable. They are legit parts calls... but they all want to speak to me...
B
Timo,
I can sell you one. Just have to figure out shipping to you.
B
Thanks Brad. Shipping is no problem. I have a friend in Florida. Youi could ship it to him and he will ship it to me later. I just dont know how to pay to you. Do you accept VISA ?
Visa/Mastercard/Paypal
Let me make sure we have one in stock. We sell two different versions. One is for the 4cyl guy's and the other is for the 6 cyl guy's. One is stronger than the other but both weigh the same.
B
Hay, thats great !!
I will send you e-mail now. Hope you will answer and we can continue this. I would like to have the stronger one.
