914World.com _ 914World Garage _ hi torque starter

Posted by: TimT Sep 20 2004, 03:32 PM

Tried searching for awhile, I remember threads about those gear reduction starters, IHI or something, Where ths best place to buy? its for my 911

Posted by: ! Sep 20 2004, 03:35 PM

The Bosch SR86X has a higher rating than stock. Kennedy Engineered Products sells one that they make themselves....all new parts instead of the Bosch remans.

Pricey though...

Hi Tim,

I just got an IMI hi-torque starter from a guy who sells on : www.thesamba.com in the classifieds, do a search for Serrano. It works a lot better than the stock 914 unit. I did have to stretch a hump in the trunk floor to make it fit though. I did not weigh it, but it is smaller, and I think lighter as well. It was $180 delivered. Good luck!

That's funny. smash.gif

"Stretching a hump" may seem like no big deal to you but to us non metal benders, its a problem.

Maybe I'll cut a hole instead.

I bought a new Japaneese High Torque Starter on ebay for $95.00
There is a guy in So. Cal who sells starters on ebay, I'll try to find the link.

Um.. JOHN... all you have to do is re-clock the starter. We do it all the time. Pull the bolts out of the adapter on the front and re-clock the mount. NO need for metal shaping.

I use the IMI Hi Torque.

Hi Brad,

Well duh! Shit, I guess metal stretching is on my mind to the exclusion of the painfully bleeding obvious! Thanks for making me feel like an idiot (insert sheepish yet smily emoticon).

BOSCH 1.5 HP Starter
Part # 916.604.101.X
Really works great in my 914-6

Posted by: rick 918-S Sep 20 2004, 07:02 PM

Why do you need a hi-torque for a 9 elebin? I bought a 1.5 hp from Oklahoma Foriegn for $ 50.00 out right. They have an over stock and want to move some of them.

10.5 to 1 measured c/r

teeny lil battery ( odyssey 680)

and most of the reduction geared starters WEIGH LESS THAN A STOCK STARTER

Lighter is Faster

BTW: I can't counter the weight thing Weight is weight that's for sure, but I'm cranking a factory euro spec "S" 928 V8 10:1 lumpy cams...

One of the mfgrs of the "lightweight, gear reduction" is R&B Performance. It is a Nippondenso with a different nose. I've got a call into him to see if he will sell outright to the club. More tomorrow!

See http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=7882&st=20 There was some info about hi torque starters.

How about http://www.paragon-products.com/ Have you asked them. Somebody recommended them long time ago and they should have hi torque starters. See http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/pp914.hts.htm

Ok, for you club members, I have talked to Ron at RB Performance. He will sell the hi-torques to club members at $150.00 each. Contact information:

RB Performance

Parker, AZ 85344
(928) 669-6411
Ronald Cooke

He takes the gear reduction starter and machines a new nose for it. So, there ya go.

Wasn't there an issue of the "too cheap to be true" ebay starters not fulley disengaging the flywheel without adding a custom spacer? Seems like I remember that from an earlier thread.

Well Brad, I'd rather have bought from you than someone else, so maybe you should let us know what you have once in a while...I'd appreciate it...too late this time, but next time.

Thanks, John www.ghiaspecialties.com

I almost bought my engine adapter from someone else (directly from Kennedy)...found out HPH can get it to me for the same price.....I decided to have Brad order it since he knows what to ask for and I also figured it would be nice to throw a little bit of money his way for helping me out here and there....

....short version of my ramble??? I don't think there is a single item that he/they cannot get at fair market price or better smile.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Sep 21 2004, 09:16 PM

John,

I dont promote because we cant handle the number of requests currently. If I made ANY attempt to push parts I would need 1-2 more people in the shop for phones and shipping. The number of walk ins/emails/phone calls is overwhelming as it is. Most of my day is full of interuptions while I'm trying to be billable. They are legit parts calls... but they all want to speak to me...
