914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 916 roof panel ever for sale??

Posted by: Mueller Sep 27 2004, 02:19 PM

Anyone know if the steel roof panel could have been purchased at one time or another to "convert" a targa topped car to a solid roof ??

no. but i do know that the company that used to make the stamps for the porsche prototypes still has all the old stamps on a shelf.

soooo, with enough $$$ you could make yourself a *real* 916 steel roof ...

Were they steel, or just steel reinforced, and bolted in place?

Posted by: Mueller Sep 27 2004, 02:24 PM

steel....and welded to the windshield frame and targa bar.....zero seams, very clean look which I'd love to have..........

Posted by: Jeroen Sep 27 2004, 02:25 PM

Full steel roof, like a real coupe

A 914 roof doesn't look too complex. I'm sure John Kelly (or another accomplished metal beater) could smash.gif one out of a some sheetmetal and weld it in...
Would be cool, if only for braging rights

yupp, would still be cool to use the original stamping, hmmmm, if there's enough demand, i could have someone contact the company and see if we can get a small production run going ...

I thought that the rain gutters and headliner was cool.

I think it'd be great to add just a bit of reinforcement, as well. A stamped rail along the top of the window to not only hold a seal but also stiffen things appreciably. Some sort of sound-deadening and/or a headliner would be mandatory for a street car, or the steel roof resonates like a drum.

Something to consider when I get around to fixing some of the crappy paintwork on my car. I never take the roof off...

At slower speeds, probably so. At freeway speeds, wind noise is pretty bad even with the window down. I've got tinnitus as it is, my 40+ year old ears need protecting. That's the real reason old people drive big, quiet luxo barges, btw. wacko.gif

Can anyone point to some decent pictures of a 916 that show the roof well? The last time this came up I did a search on the net for references to the 916, but could never find anything that was shot from close enough to show how they did the roof. I'd love to do this to my '72 when I get back to restoring it.

One of the biggest reasons I love this car is the top coming off. I dont think I ever drive with it on. There was that time on the Baja Run II where it was so hot sitting in traffic that the top was the only relief from the sun and heat. But my top is always body colored since black always attracts heat. The car I drove down there was Yellow. Once we started moving again, I took the top back off.

I recalled seeing & reading a British mag, 911 or Porsche something, and there was a good article and pictures of a guy fabricated steel roof for someone's 914. He had to make nine different pieces by hand before he could weld all of them together to make a complete roof. The quailty looked very good by looking at the pictures but what's on top of the weld beads, I dunno...bondo? lead? But it looked real good and just like the 916!

I've been toying with the idea of doing it myself but I could never find that stupid magazine a month later only to learn the new issues had been put up on the rack....damn it! headbang.gif

Do you mean this one? I saw this in the flesh a few years back -a really nice conversion. Flawless. I just found this picture on the 'net and to my surprise that guy wearing a 914 blueprint T-shirt to the left is me.

that's funny!! hey .... i know that guy .... oh it's me!! haaaaaa!! biggrin.gif

paul, i took frances and jeanne right on the head. i stayed in my apt. beachside. the northern edge of the eye passed just to the my south. we had about 5 hours of sustained winds from about 60 to 80 mph with gusts just over 100 mph. my neighbors and i were lucky, no damage, but there was quit a bit of carnage to the older houses, condos and hotels right along the beach. oh ... and of course the trailer parks!! most all of the newer const. had little damage mostly only shingles or tiles missing. never lost power during jeanne. but lost cable and internet for a few days. there are still plenty of people without power. 2 months left in the season!! biggrin.gif

those original stampings would be cool!!! check into it!!
