Anyone have a clue where I can find a 14:37 gear set....or 15:36?....901 of course.
Hi JP,
John Walker has a lot of transaxle stuff:
JWWORKSHOP@aol.com
John www.ghiaspecialties.com
I have a stock core sitting in the shop...
14:37 is a B and 15:36 is a C ... stock 1st is an A = 11:34
B and C were used as 1st gear in early 911's.
My early 911/901 was sold last weekend....never mind.
JW no got.
11:34=35mph
14:37=41mph
15:35=45mph
I have to go check... I think I only have "A" firsts
Yeap I have 2 "A" gearsets
oh well
This gear chart shows
11:34
12:34
14:37
15:36....if this C, I'm confused.....no letters on the chart.
At any rate, I've found a C....tho I would prefer a B or what ever 14:37 is.
JP, Do you think that the first gear will hold up to screaming around the AX course with that 200hp six you is running?
I would worry that going on and off throttle will snap that first gear shaft off.
Geoff
Dunno, but I intend to find out.
My stock 1st is so low as to be useless except for starts.
I'm gettin' killed on tight corners where the motor falls off the bump.....so I'm trying to get it set up for a useful 1st gear...if/as required. Most of the work is still 2nd gear stuff, but on this last course, having a first gear good to around 40 mph would have been a big help.

Try 914 Limited Inc. Brad Mayeur, 309.694.1797
I am about to prove I don't know much about trannys, but what about keeping the stump-puller 1st gear, going lower on 2nd and 3rd (If first is more fragile than the others)?
Second gear is machined right into the mainshaft. You'd have to change it to the mainshaft of the ratio you want, or get a 904 mainshaft that has all the gears interchangable... the 904 mainshaft may not be able to take the extra gear for first (I think it's intended as a 4 speed mainshaft) and it's about as unobtainium as you can get.
I also only have A firsts.. I also have an A mainshaft, but I don't see how that would help.
Try Gary Fairbanks in Norwalk CT
203-866-2466
try Ottos for a repo 904 mainshaft JP and other 1st gears. I think you would be better with a better 2nd and 3rd ratio but bring lots of money to do this.
Geoff
So, changing 2nd means changing the main shaft. Thanks Royce. Now I know what it means when people talk about a 904 main shaft.
Sounds like you could build real exotic 4 speed autocross box with the 904 piece. If we find one for him, JP might go shopping for a second mortgage on the house!
Wonder if an early 912 4 speed might have a useful gear or two inside?
I've gotten a quote from OTTO's. New C with dogteeth. Not too bad$$.
I'm thinkin' on it.
Early 912 trans has AHQX... the A mainshaft wouldn't help at all. H typically gets used as 5th in v8 conversions. (I have an H gear and everything else from 914 and 912 transmissions for sale in the classifieds)
It looks like the real solution is a different R&P (expensive too, and I don't have any). Man, is there anything about these transmissions that isn't expensive? Even saw a shift knob go for $400 on ebay!
The gasket set are pretty cheap but that's about it.....
Geoff
JP,
Let me know what you find and what the prices are.
