this is interesting, these numbers are straight from Karman's Classic Archive.
they are close to what has been published so far, but still a bit off:

Andy, PM me your snail mail address...
I've got that early 914 brochure with pics of the stolen car in it
Don't send it to him, that thief Brad might steal it!!!
Geoff
What about the 76?
Big black bumpers need love too....
mine was built 12/75 but was it completed then?
I have heard that Karmann built all the chassis and then finished the cars later as Porsche needed them. Thats why most of the last cars came with everything, Porsche was sellling them as the Dealers were ordering them, loaded, to max out the profit as they were selling pretty damn good.
Geoff
I am just going by what I have read elsewhere that they welded up all the chassis and painted them using all the available body panels that were good. They then finished the cars as needed for the dealers.
Remember Porsche was even looking to build and assemble the 914 elsewhere and decided it was too expensive to move the whole operation.
Geoff
No, Porsche was seriously looking at building the car themselves elsewhere I read. Decided it would be too expensive to move and set up a new production line.
The 924 was a VW project that they dropped and the Audi plant begged Porsche to put their name on it (Porsche did the design work) and sell so the Audi plant wouldn't have to close.
Geoff
So 7,921 for 1975...
that is all the '75s and '76s that were made?
