They just don't go looking for all the rust

Scotty, how soon before you start the trunk repair. I'm getting ready to do my rear trunk area and will watch and learn, hopefully. Take plenty of pic's.

Nope. I looked.
It's not there. Great that you're saving it. You took it to the right place!

I'm sure Scotty will get this squared away. Hopefully, we won't be too far off the "worst case" estimate he gave me! Scotty has seen enough of these that he told me up front that the rust would be worse than I thought it would be.
I have seen (and bought) enough 914's in my short experience with these cars that I now believe what several "experts" have said. ALL unrestored 914's have rust...it's just a matter of how bad.

OMG! I sure hope that we are not viewing another thread here in the next month that looks like that with my car. My car actually arrives at Scotty's shop in the morning - 5/21/12. Let's not forget that I live pretty close to the Golden Gate Bridge......
Take comfort that Scotty is on the job and has your car well in hand.

For your sake I hope not either! Some rust we knew about going in ( hell hole, fenders, rear trunk, etc.). Other areas were a complete surprise such as the floor pan and firewall. Once the disassembly starts on a car who knows what will be found.

Looks like it oversprayed on the tire. I hope that comes off easily... tires are almost new.
I really like the look of the new metal. That rust was bad news. With Scotty"s rust finding abilities and repair skills I am confident that I will have one of the most rust free 914's in SC. Seriously....
I can't wait for the paint. I know it will make the rest of the car look tired. This will lead to new seals, interior, etc$$$$$$

Damn, the car makes Christine look rust free. And here I was going to chop her up. Not so sure now, she will be an easy fix compared to that one.
Posted by: scotty b May 25 2012, 05:47 AM
what was that thing in the sail panel?
That is the piece of foam they put in at the factory to prevent squeaks or some other ridiculous b.s. That is the ONLY why the sail panels rot out
Scotty, what did you spray inside the left long where the rear heater tube goes thru?
Areas like that ad the spot on the sail panel get wire brusehd, a coat of OSPHO ( which is what you are reffering to ) and then a coat of rustoleum
Looks like it oversprayed on the tire. I hope that comes off easily... tires are almost new.
No overspray on the tire, that's just dust from grinding out the bondo in the 1/4 panel

This may be a dumb question but how do
you stop the rust left on the inside.
Posted by: Dr Evil May 25 2012, 02:13 PM
That is what the OSPHO and rustoleum is for. Also, if you can keep the moisture from being trapped back there, like in removing the foam, then the rust slows that is not treated.
Posted by: billh1963 May 28 2012, 01:48 PM
Ouch! You better quit digging....looks like the rust is Spreading up in Virginia!
I'm glad toy found it now rather than I find it it the hard way later.

I hope Scott doesn't find any more surprises! The suspension rust was a big one!
On a serious note, there are lots of advantages to having a professional like Scott do the work:
1. It's done right the first time. No half-ass home repairs or bodged repairs by someone not familiar with a 914
2. Because he knows the car, he will get the job done in less time
3. Scott stands behind his work
4. If I were to ever sell the car some day, reputations help. This car has Bodywork by Scott, transmission by Dr. Evil, engine tuning by Bob Woodman, etc.
5. I'll probably bring him my '76 next. I'll get a the volume discount (hint, hint)!

Next dumb question.........Do you ever do (or have done) a full media blast of the body? Is it more or less expensive than using your 'lie detector'? I'm sure it's more expensive, but in the long run, you find all the issues at once. Or am I wrong? Is the full media blasting for color changes only?
Scotty, it's great work as usual. Just wondered how much media blasting vs 'lie detecting' might save time and therefore money?
Thanks,
Kelly

full blasting is all in what the customer wants to do with the car. In most cases like Bills car the knotted wire brush gets the brunt of the use

Mostly due to the fact that some time before I got her, somebody welded the front half of a '70 model onto the back half of the '73. If all the vins were matching I would save her. I would still save her ifI could afford it but I am struggling to pay for the two I already have at Scotty's and still doing a very poor job of that. Plus, I still have an LE that needs to go there in a few years when the others are done and paid for. Probably sometime after my death and if my daughter doesn't blow all the life insurance money.

It's good people are spending money on their 914's...just makes it rough when they hit all at once. It's a nice problem to have!
I have at least one more (maybe two) I want to bring you this Fall. One is for minor body work. Another is my '76 that has some rust...but I don't think it's as bad as the green one.
Also, I'm thinking of a high quality paint job on the white car you saw on the trailer during the transmission clinic. That car is a low mileage original and is probably show worthy.
I'll let you get caught up before I overwhelm you with details!

Etch primed everything, then seam sealed all of the joints. Since this is going to be driven regularly I put a light coat of seam sealer over everything below the engine shelf for added protection. Then a coat of black epoxy paint, then the undercoating. Here you can see better where the seam sealer was brushed on then the black paint before the undercoating

What you see is a 3M sprayable seam sealer that uses a special gun to duplicate factory ribbons and spray patterns, but on jobs that aren't to be " perfect " it works well in a caulk gun and just brush it over the cracks. Even when I spray it, I make my first coat a brush on like this so I know it has gotten into the seam, not just layed overtop of it.
This is just one of the problems I have noticed on these cars over the years. the factories ( Porsche and Karmann ) used good quality seam sealer, BUT they sprayed it on very heavy, and due to it's thickness it never flowed into the cracks between panels. This left a void that water could get into if the seam sealer was ever damaged. By brushing the first layer in, I can cram it into the crack, and also make certain I have a good complete bond over the joints without any voids. On a show type job, I would then go over this brushed on coat with the spray gun just to get the proper factory look

Nope all PPG. base / clear finish. I always use base clear unless the owner specifically wants single stage. 2 stage is much easier to maintain, looks just as good, and holds up better over time. Unless you want the worn, weatherd rat rod look down the road

I've got several lids around without dents, but that said, none of them have been stripped down to see what is truely there<_< I'm fairly certain given the placement of the dents and the sizes of the dents it is from people sitting/resting on the rear of the cars. They all seem to be butt sized and shaped

How come you didn't primer the headlight buckets?
Did you just scuff them up and give them a dusting? Can't really tell from the pictures.

Yes just scuffed and painted. There was spot on one that had some rust which I ground down, etched and primed first.

The lines on the car are right!
It helped that although there was rust (like they all have) it had a straight tub to begin with.
The car looks "right". All gaps are even and correct.
The fault finders will notice the mirrors are not on (just got the screws in yesterday), the windshield trim is not on completely (might have to pull the winshield to install the clips for holding the trim), and right front side marker is not on (the rubber shipment was short shipped one front side marker seal...it's supposedly on it's way)

You should take the interior door panel off and look for the 2 mounting nuts on the inside of the door. Unless they were really welded up. You could put a nail or something in the nut (maybe even drill a hole from the inside) and strike it so that it makes a mark on the outside of the door. That's, then, where you drill the holes for the mounting screws. Sorry for the hijack and hope the advice is correct (I read that procedure here or on the club board a long time ago)
Posted by: jersey914 Jan 11 2013, 02:04 PM
Thanks for the highjack but I have already been there and done that. The holes are full of weld and I cant get up inside to get leverage and drill carefully and accurately. I have no choice but to go in from the outside and then re tap the hole.
Thanks just the same

Unfortunately, rust is lurking on almost all these cars! Take a look at the before pictures (showing the typical rust) and then see the pictures as the work progressed and rust was discovered. I would venture to say that a very large percentage of teeners on this board have rust issues that aren't too far away (some better and some worse) from the original pictures. The good news is the rust on this car has been addressed. The bad news is that there are thousands of other 914's out there that are rusting under new paint, bondo, and fiberglass!

) and hit the road for the return trip around 11:00. I-95 was closed in NC around exit 116 (don't know why) and had to take a big detour.
Got home right at dark, unloaded the car, dropped off the trailer at U-Haul and am now relaxing with a Guiness. I seldom drink; however, this is in celebration of getting the car home!
That looks great!
