914World.com _ 914World Garage _ contemplating an exit strategy...

Posted by: RJMII May 21 2012, 09:47 AM

I've been doing these emblems as time allows, after work, on my own machine at home.

With the world site having gone down, other f***ed up variables in life getting in the way, and getting a job that has a 3 hour commute one way, I've been contemplating getting out of doing emblems and safety bolts.

My reputation is worth more than a couple of emblems here and there, especially when I have more going on in life that is really pulling my attention and financial resources away from being able to do these right now. I've got a couple of emblems left to do to get caught up, but I"m pretty much getting bored with them.

Do I sell my setup? Just call it quits? Put a time limit on orders and make one last super run of emblems this week for those that want them, and then quit?

What I do with the knobs is make them as time allows. Sell what I have on hand and then wait a year or so when I have the urge to do more of them. I would not say "quit." But rather "back burner."

When I sell the last 10 or so knobs I have here, I likely will not make any more until next spring.

I agree with back burner. Or.......

find someone who is out of work that you trust who you can share this experience with as you focus on other items. You be the brains of the outfit and have the other person do the work and earn the partial profit. I think there are many more items to do and peddle out on eBay other than us silly 914 WORLD peeps.
Examples:
- My request of Oyster Box labels for example. (A PNW item needed by many)
- Address # for mail boxes, houses, or driveways.
- Custom Garage signs
- Custom file cabinet drawer labels
- Custom tool box drawer labels (metric, standard, socket, etc.)
- Custom drawer pulls (endless supply of ideas here)
- Beer Fridge labels beerchug.gif
- Custom BBQ labels
- Custom ________!!!

It doesn't have to make a ton of money, but every littel bit counts and I'm sure there are people you know that could use a little extra too.

my .02 worth.

Good Luck!

A sad thought, but I understand all the reasons why.

Don't feel like you are under ANY time pressure with mine; 'cause you're not. Do what your gut tells you and you rarely go wrong. . .

3 hours each way!!!? how do you find time for anything?

No kidding. I'm about to go back to a 1 hour commute after 7 months of unemployment and contract work. Much as I prefer steady pay and insurance, I'm dreading the driving. Back burner your operation. If you take the other suggestion about letting someone work with you, well, that's your call. But just take your time with it, take 6 months off, or a year or whatever. Do it when you *want* to. Be up front about that and most folks will give you all the slack you need.

Hate to be a selfish, shameless, a-hole but if you are going to make one last push I would like to place an order as your work is great. I do like the suggstion of finding someome wanting/needing to work that could run the business for you.

Please let us know.

Thanks,

Few left? Do you have a 914-8, or maybe a 918?

I'm doing one last push/run. smile.gif

I'll be taking a few days off towards the end of the week and working in my garage doing all of the emblems that are asked for this week, then the operation is getting put on the back burner until further notice.

Thank you guys for the input. It really helped. :-)

PM orders to me, and I"ll respond with quotes and payment arrangements.

Posted by: RJMII May 23 2012, 03:43 PM

I took Thurs-Sunday off this week...

If I missed a PM, please send again, as I would like to make sure and get all of these taken care of before shifting focus for awhile.

finishing up all of the emblems that my mini mill can handle.

Deadline for this run is Saturday at noon-ish, so I can pack and drive back to work on Sunday.

Having come off a long distance job with a 5-6 hour driving time each way, finishing up the outstanding orders and moving on is the right thing to do.

Best of luck in your new gig, and hope everything goes great for you.

By the way, the only reason I'm sane is the books on CD at the local library.

Hope that you can partake of them while driving and that you can get them either in your home town or in the town of work.

Thinking Wyoming, not sure what is avaialble to you.

Best of luck in your new gig, it really makes you appreciate your family.

This is getting off-topic, but if local libraries won't cut it you might want to check out audible.com - they hire actors and authors to read books, and create audio files that are supported by most personal music players, phones, e-readers, etc. A friend who commutes an hour each way swears by them.

Hey, thanks guys! I will start another thread on the road trip later. It's a twisty winding road over the mountain. A 914 'dream ride' for about 2 of the 3 hours.

If you have an iphone or android, check out stitcher -- you can stream any podcast on planet earth. There are some great ones depending on what your interests are.

This can chew up your data plan though.

unlimited data on my plan... but no signal all the way over the mountain. lol

Thanks for the heads up on stitcher! I'll put it on my android phone for areas that I do have signal.

I've been plugging away at getting caught up on emblem orders...

This week I am moving to do away with the 3 hour drive and time away from my garage.

The place I am going has a garage to work out of and I'll be able to get caught up and figure out where the missed orders went. Except for a handful of emblems that are reasy to ship, everything is packed and ready to go.

Any update on the fuchs wheels that you took orders/payments for over a year ago?

As far as I know I shipped all but 3 orders that i am looking for addresses for. The order list was on the computer my wife left with and refuses to give back.

My whole organizational structure was on that computer and I've been trying to rebuid it

Bit, yeah... the wheels were all done and talked about in another thread. Thanks for asking.

Good to see you post Jim! your a talented guy. You will be back up and running full tilt in no time.

Nice to have someone that can create something personal and special for your fun car. The emblems you custom make are really nice.

To those who are waiting for them. Jim is a honest hard working guy that has fought through illness and drama and still seems to try to keep that out of the conversation and keep up with your wants. Hang in there Jim and keep smiling! biggrin.gif
