Looking forward to watching this one. Question: what's the plumbing behind the front bumper for?
I think that's his oil cooler...
I am so excited to see this thread as my car starts to come apart. Thank you Scott for posting this I hope everyone enjoys the progression of this build.
I will be interested to see what Scott finds re the rear end. I had no indications of the car having serious accident damage. The engine compartment is still the original color and areas of the trunk were still the original color too. Well, we shall see. Regardless, if it was not done right, it will be now.
MGD that is the oil cooler system; it runs up the passenger side long and across the front bumper area and returns to the engine. No actual cooler, it just cools the oil via the copper pipe and the trip to the front and back. Apparently it was effective as the previous owner said the car never ran hot.
Very interesting and rewarding car project. I have seen that type of oil cooler before but with the thermo/bypass valve installed. I am putting a modified version in my clone Sixer. apparently they do work so we shall see.
Does anyone know what this is ? It is on the drivers side and uses factory looking dome head screws. I also forgot about the speaker mod pics
Attached image(s)
Did the seat belt tongue sit in that? Shot in the dark here.....
The piece on the inner long is a seatbelt holder. I may be wrong but there should be one on both sides. Or was that only with adjustable seats?
My 72 4 had it on both sides
I think they were only on the drivers' side....and indeed are for the belt. Mine had neither side, have been trying to sort that out. Are there any holes for the screws in the sheetmetal, or does it just attach to the carpet?
Looking forward to watching this....wish I"d taken a series of pics, not just for thread value, but so I could figure out how to reassemble years later
Please keep us posted
Do a search for that seat belt holder, I remember reading about it before. I too have a real 6 and need to know. Al
I have found these seat belt holsters on the drivers side (only) on 1970-71 fours and sixes. the non-retractable seat belt years on the adjustable seat side of the car.
I have never parted out a 1972 so I cannot say for sure.
Gold*Gold*Gold!!!
Is the driver side rear fender a replacement ? Red primer on sail panel makes me wonder...
Much nicer than the other turds you have been messing with lately
Sweet ride. Have fun!
What color will the car be when finished? Keeping black or going back to original color?
Michael-
My plan, as of now, keeping in mind that could change between now and paint time, is to go ivory white. I seriously can not own a gold car. If I was just going to paint it and sell it then it would be gold. I plan on keeping it and driving it so no gold for me. The next in line color would likely be either irish green or adriatic blue and then silver is added to the list. I am 99% positive it will be light ivory though.
The car has been black since it was apparently 1 year old. That has to say something about how much the original owner liked the gold....
Well mine may be less rusty (praying to the Porsche Gods and the rust Gods) but I am sure we will see enough rust on my car car to require surgery. I am just hoping it is on the lighter side of 41 year old rust.
He has a non rusty specimen waiting for him when he gets done with all these crusty turds. Just waiting on all the rusty ones to be gone so they don't infect the good one.
Michael
Great to see that the restro has started. Trying to find the time to get together with you to talk shop.
Cheers
I would love that; you could bring the NSX or I could come over to your place. Let me know.
Michael
Looks like the front panel was also replaced, this should have holes in the panel.
the later panels had not holes stamped. the early headlight buckets do not line up with the late panels...did they replace the buckets too?
Glenn, The later replacement fits all years. The later headlight buckets are shorter to allow the bumper shocks.
One other things I have found odd ( remember this is my first time completely disassembling a 6 ) is all of the additional sound deadening in it. Both inner rockers were coverd top and sides and then there were pieces on both wheel wells and two smaller squares on the front firewall. I also found two small dia holes in the pass front floor pan that had rubber plugs in them Never seen that before on any 4 cylinder
also I thought the 47 stamp on the gas tank was cool. Another thing I've not seen before There is another stamp on top I forgot to get a pic of. Can't quite make out what it is. I'll get a pic tomorrow

Looks like a "body in white", painted gold...
I dig the gold. I have never seen that color on another car, and if this is going to be a high quality resto, I think that the value it will add would be big. Can somebody do a PhotoShop?!?!?
I vote to make it gold again !
Very nice so far. Fortunately, when it comes to color, this is not going to proceed as a democracy.....gold is not in the future of this car. Sorry.
I dunno, gold is rare flashy and says something like I'm somebody!
Yeah, I agree re the seat belt receiver; I tried it on another six I had and fortunately did not break or damage anything. As soon as I saw it stuck in the receiver I said, well that was poorly designed and never tired it again.
As for gold.....man I catch a lot of grief over my plan to change the original color but I just can't have a gold car - especially that gold. I still plan on going light ivory but irish green is a strong 2nd.
give it up guys. The car will not be gold, I am fully backing Michael in this decision
I had that series of pictures as my desktop for quite a while.....still didn't work. Sorry, but I appreciate you trying.
Thanks Scott for the support
I don't think you understand, the community has voted and you will be painting your car gold.
Scotty only agrees with you because he has paint left over from my car
I am certain that it will look just as great as all of the other nicely restored light ivory cars we have all seen
I am just being a trouble-maker with an opinion. I am definitely a member of the "It's your car, do whatever you want" crowd, and I will never part ways.
Irish green is great as well. I remember a VW/Porsche or European Car article several years ago about an Irish green six that was restored from a basket case by some guy whose uncle was the original owner. Beautiful car. I am sure that T.C. has the article.
Light Ivory is nice (I'm biased) but to get the full effect you need to insert jack stands....
this is Awesome... the new night time reading..!!!
The Air was thick with Cat calls.. no pun intended..
Paint it any color you want.... its your car and it will still be worth a fair amount of change...
where are the cowling supports ?

Ah I remember the stripping days...felt so good to get it down to naked to view where the repairs and needs are for the car.
I can't wait to see this build and the car put into better shape. I endorse the "do it your way" and Ivory White will be a nice look to a SIX.
What is the estimated time of completion?
I would like it done within 18 months or sooner if I can manage it. The only limiting factor is my wallet. I pay for this work out of extra cash every month. I won't go into any savings, investments, etc. so I hope to keep it going in a forward direction every single month.
Status update: car due to be on rotisserie within next 2 weeks and media blasted inside & out with a coat of primer by end of August. I am looking forward too seeing those pictures......
Freaking oil lines took almost 3 hours to remove. I had to cut the lines every 6 or so inches, let that section of oil drain out, then cut the rest of the way through. I've never felt like I was so well lubricated in my life Getting the top line was fun too.
In other news, the car has had the drivers rear quarter replaced, and I am almost certain both front fenders have been replaced unless the stitch welded seam is a 6 only assembly procedure. there is no gold paint under the black on the fronts either.
I have a feeling the car was wrecked early on and was repaired with factory panels by a very competent shop. It would be interesting to know the whole story though
Anyway, the car is completely dismantled now except for the suspension. Hopefully I will get it on the rotiserrie tomorrow and drop the suspension, then commence with scraping the undercoating and seam seaer prior to blasting it
Attached image(s)
looking good! How effective was the home made trombone cooler? was there any evidence of chaffing or wear through at the chassis support of the copper?
Looks like it will take a few months to put that back together. Can't wait to see it finished!
In even better news I have sourced another original Gold 914 that has been painted white. So Cairo can return his Six to Gold and still have a Gold 914-4 painted white.
thanks for the info
Very nice to see this moving along. I am not really concerned that some panels have been replaced. I know that Scott will make sure that everything is perfectly fitted and welded.
In a car that is 41 years old it has to be the exception to find one with all original panels. I am just concerned that all of the rust and damage is corrected properly and that is why my car is in Scott's capable hands.
I am glad to see that oil cooler system come out; on an informative note, the prior owner, #2, said he has driven the car like that since the 3,0 was installed and never had a cooling problem and that included driving through the Santa Cruz mountains in the summer. So for those wondering, that's the best I can tell you.
Thanks Scott for working on my car and posting the pictures.
Michael
First flip the weld flange on the front panel is a bit crusty but I only found one bad spot in the floor
Attached image(s)
like peeling an orange and the floors look great!!
When are you getting the new blasting system? That would make quick work of the floors!
I already got the blaster, unfortunately blasting won't do much with the rubberized undercoating like this. It just tends to bounce off of it. IT sucks but manual peeling is the best way I have found for this coating. Keep in mind that the 6's were assembled in the same plant as the 911's, so they recieved the " deluxe " Shutzing
I am so glad to see that. I am really happy with the condition of this car so far. Please get some door braces on that baby soon
Hi Mark:
I'm more the glass is half full kind of guy. With my luck Scotty would come in in the morning and my car would look like a U. I would rather be safe than wide awake at night wondering if it is sagging. But I want to say thanks for your vote of confidence in my car.
The other night I woke up from a horrid dream....the covered transport arrived at my house and they opened the back and rolled out a metallic gold Six....thank God I woke up before I had a heart attack in my sleep. It was frightening..... I am still shaking from it.
Couldn't resist either. I am still 90% light ivory and 10% irish green. If I were a gambler, I would put my money on light ivory.
In your dream, was there door braces on the transporter?
If anything, it would have been me that was dead and painted gold! She is full blooded Portuguese. I am really afraid of her.....
Michael, please give Scotty a big pile of money so we can see more pics
Hey Mike- I am doing the best I can. I love seeing the pictures too as the Scotty and the car make progress.
Spoiler:
This is how it will look like.
Is that really light ivory? It looks whiter in that picture than I remember it. But yeah, generally that is what it will look like.
That's the color but pictures and light conditions will impact the look on your screen.
I like the color a lot, mostly because it doesn't show the dust
Between my dad and I there is almost a full week just in scraping off the undercoating, and I still have one wheel well to go Only found a few more SMALL rust spots to fix. One in the floor, one on the engine shelf under the battery tray and the spot on the long where the oil ines had been run. Media blasting will get the remainder of the undercoating bits off Also note the rust that was underneath the foam in the rear corners. It's always a good idea to remove that stuff
Attached image(s)
Cool shots. Did you figure out how the orange got there?
No wonder you haven't posted any updates on my car....you've been too tired to work on mine after scraping off undercoating for a week!
Scotty, wish I was closer to help you.
Bill, your avitar is killing me! haha
I am very pleased with what you have uncovered thus far. I believe a thread like this, laying it all bare for all to see, is a great way to show the differences in build btwn. a 4 and a 6, or a mild restoration and full blown one so people have an idea what to look for and expect.
As far as any panels that were not correctly installed and up to Scott's standards....guess what? Off they come and they will be reinstalled correctly. I have absolute confidence in Scotty B!
Thanks again Scott for the great work and keeping this thread moving with terrific pictures. Michael
A quick update since I am here. I have been cleaning up the last fender well today ( right rear) and have uncoverd orange paint on it, so it would apear this 1/4 panel came from the same car the trunk did. Pics later
Well, you will be glad to know Scotty talked me out of putting flares on it.
Scotty is doing a great job! I'm looking forward to seeing this six back on the road!!!!
Me too!
Last wheel well and rockers are done I'm going to box up the undercoating and weigh it just for S & giggles Jack triangles will be replaced I will probably also cut off the jack point on the pass side as it is prettt crusty and I'd like to make certain the long behind it is o.k. I find it interestign how the rustiest areas on the car so far are where they got soaked with oil from the coolant lines
Attached image(s)
If the lines were always weaping oil, maybe the PO was always hitting that section with detergent and water to try to keep clean?
25 pounds??????
hmm, I have an idea...Oh Scotty, check yer PMs!
Are you going to cut the holes in the replacement front panel?
Attached image(s)
The front is part of its history, none of the fenders are OG to the car. Or find a 70-71? and change it. I bought one in 1980 and it was the one you have ..I returned it and spent hours fixing my OG one.
Its all gut..
No we will not be cutting the holes in that factory panel. I agree with Scotty re just additional spots for leaks, rust, etc. If this were a matching number C&W car then I would consider that. I believe that the right rear fender is original to the car; just saying.......
To me, this car is gold
Thank goodness I sold the flares to keep me from being tempted. Straight bodied she will remain.

Slip one of those in my green car!!!!!!!!!
I think Scotty wants to build an 12 cylinder boxter motor.
For the house-van?
Cool motors, I wish I could swap my 2.7 for one
Pooh, and I just noticed one already has a 914/6 oil cooler, nice!
So if the rear section was from another -6 and several other panels were replaced exactly how many -6 cars do you have here
your off to a great start and I'm enjoying the thread!!! Keep posting
Very nice to see the engine made it safely to VA and is now in close proximity to my car It is an '89 3.2.
The next thing I have to do is call Web Cams and see what the specs are for the cams it has in it. It came with the stock cams too in case I want to switch back. The ones in the engine are supposed to be similar to 964 cams. The engine also came with a Steve Wong chip as well as the stock chip.
It has approximately 40K miles on it, I have the paperwork from the original owner whose car it came out of as well as the guy I just bought it from. The motor sat in a garage for over 10 years until the seller I purchased it from installed it in his car a couple of years ago and drove it; I know it needs a complete valve job and guides at the minimum. Then whatever else Scotty thinks it needs it will get.
PS - It also came with a set of headers (911) which I would like to sell, extra fan, shroud, and assorted other parts. I heard and saw it run before I bought it via Face Time - which was cool.
dibs on the headers I'll talk to you about the extra parts as well. Might want to hold onto the alt until yours is in and known good.
the 3.2 heater boxes are in excellent shape if anyone needs them
also send me all the inf you have on the engine when you get it all so i know what I am dealing with internally and externaly. It looks like an Autothority MAF unit, but the sticker is old and can't be read. Model number would be handy. If that is what it is I'll contact Autothority and see if I can get a new sticker for it if that is what you choose to run
Hold onto the extra fan shroud. They crack and oem are unobtanium.
As a side note, the local guy I've started getting parts from has about a dozen or more 914's and a warehouse full of parts but the jewel is a gold 914-6 that is sitting up high on a stand with the wheels off and you can see all the parts have been powder coated and everything. Pretty sweet car. Guy has just about every part you can imagine, it's crazy.
all snuggled down with her sister for a long winters nap...
Is my engine a girl? Is she sexy?
Scotty - We can work something out on the headers......what could it be.....maybe some work on that Six sitting in your shop
As for the heat exchangers from the 3.2, they are available if anyone needs them for a very fair price.
I don't know what to do re the Autothority MAF unit, but go ahead and see if you can get a new sticker, that would be nice. We will have a talk about that and the cams once I get the specs from Web. Essentially, if these items, cams and MAF unit, do not create issues as to reliability, driveability and maintenance, and broaden the torque curve or add a little HP...I say let's go with them. But that is just my knee-jerk reaction w/o and research or discussion with those in the know.
Scotty you are right about the alternator and Mark is right about the fan shroud. We will hold on to both of those items until we know if the ones on the engine are good, or as good as the spares.
I am so happy that the engine arrived crated as if it were going to circumnavigate the globe! My thanks to Ben Merriman over at the bird site.
getting the final prep work done prior to blasting. Shooting for next week Note the creepy smilie face stamp on the t.c. cover of the old engine
Attached image(s)
Terrific! I am pleased to see the metal work being started on the chassis.
We will have to see what the heat exchangers look like when blasted. May need to replace them with some of the soon-to-be manufactured SS heat exchangers.
Thanks for the pictures Scotty.
I thought California cars were rust free?
Looking good!
Wow, good pictures, informative narrative of doint it right. Everybody wishes we could have a new, 40 year old car. I wish I had the time, money, tools, facilities, ....and talent to do this.
And I agree on the light ivory. That would make it a good candidate for a Creamesicle!!! Wowww, a -6 Creamsickle!
Hello?......
Did I say something wrong?
I appreciate the thoughts as my car moves along in Scotty's shop. I am still leaning towards Light Ivory with the backup color being Irish Green. This car will not be a creamsicle Six though .
Hey Bill - I am fairly happy with what Scotty has uncovered thus far. Compared to others, this chassis is pretty clean.
I think the fact that this Six was pretty much parked outside for quite some time by the 2nd owner, though covered, who lived near the ocean may have contributed to the small amount of rust this car has. Had it been an Arizona car it would likely be completely clean. But I am not complaining as I knew this was going to be a rotisserie restoration and would need metal work regardless. I am just fortunate that it is in the expert hands of Scotty B.
Started blasting yesterday. I've never stripped a whole car before and grossly under-estimated how long it would take. The sections of body panels I hit went quickly, but all the nooks and crannies seemed to take forever, as the media would build up and I had to clean the stuff out to see what I had and hadn't gotten clean. All the little spots of remaining undercoat and seam sealer were a bitch too. Anyway, the whole underside is nude, as is the front and rear panels and part of the engine bay. Forcast for rain tomorrow so hopefuly Tuesday I can get the trunks, pass compartment, remaining engine bay and outer body done.

Looking good gents!
What a waste of gold paint
If you need more encouragement, I can send you as many pictures as you want of my white 914
(rare factory gold original 6)
Looks like it is coming along nicely!
Scotty is there a thread on making your rotisserie or do you have dimensions handy?
Well color me one happy guy. I love to see my car moving forward in the process and not seeing a ton of damage or rust to have to address. Very exciting indeed. I look forward to seeing the remainder of the car stripped. Not worried about that front panel - if Scotty needs to remove that and reinstall it to make it correct, that is the way it goes.
Oh and it looks like gold '71 Sixes just got a little more rare as this one will soon have no remnants of gold on it at all - for the rest of my life at least.
looks great and solid
Be careful blasting the back sides of the hood and trunk. Keep in mi d you're "hammering" the metal and you can't reach the sheet metal behind the stringers. Aggressive blasting from the back can leave an imprint of the stringers on the top surface.
Might as well buy some extra white paint. My car should get back to you about the time this one's going into the booth.....
(gold)
please fix these holes
there are several holes that will be filled in
Excellent work, Scotty.
Those are some pretty big holes; what the heck were they for?
They almost look like they could be used to evacuate oil cooler heat...
Scotty, why is there a tie down loop behind the master cylinder but not on the front trunk bottom? is that a -6 thing? interesting
The more I look at that gold the more I think.......wait for it...............
that I am never going to paint it gold.
Disclaimer: To those with gold cars, I have nothing against them. I just do not, and have never liked, gold. Look at the bright side, one less gold car makes your gold car that much more desirable
Not that gold , This GOLD Homie
White will be Fine

Hey Scotty:
Well we now know what we have to deal with. I still believe, based upon all the others I have seen, that is a pretty clean chassis. I know that you will surgically excise the bad and replace it with nice new metal.
Nice to see it finally sans Gold ( )
front trunk and one of the headlight buckets. Crappy weld never even got a good grip before it broke loose But that's o.k. A gob of seam sealer will hold it together
I also stripped most of the seam sealer out of the pass compartment, but fortunately found nothing under it to post. IMHO most of the rust issues here are a result of a 75% repair some time ago. the fit was good looking from the outside, but underneath the seam sealer we see there was a lack of REAL attention put into making things the way they were originally. Couple that with a lack of proper primer, and some half ass seam sealer, and you get uglies
Attached image(s)
That is all. I'm going to try and get some etch primer on it tomorrow night or saturday morning so it doesn't start flash rusting on me. Then on to the cutting
Scotty: I noticed in a lot of the pictures the metal looks like it was sand blasted. I know you did not use sand so is it just the pictures? Is the metal smooth or is it pitted all over and porous?
Some of those pictures were pretty hard to look at. I am hoping it is like when you see yourself on TV as we all know the camera adds 10 pounds to you. In some cases there may be 5 or 6 cameras on someone.....
However I am real pleased with what the car is from a starting point. I look forward to seeing lots of cutting, welding and grinding as the rusty metal is replaced with nice fresh metal.
Thanks for the pictures Scotty. I hope everyone is enjoying the detailed progress shots as it moves along towards its re-birth.
I see some threads where people mention they stripped their car to bare metal but amazingly you see the car old and rusty and then the next photos are all in primer - leaving out a crucial piece of the process as far as documentation goes. I am glad to see Scotty is documenting this build so well.
OK and on to the
Looks like a good start.
I can't wait to see the car finished and painted.
In its original gold.
It's just the close up making it look rough Michael. It's no where near as bad as it looks. All in all it is a really solid car, just some previous repair work that needs to be redone. I'm not saying it was crap work, but it was most likely late 70's / early 80's collision shop work. ALMOST right but not quite there.
Call me tomorrow around noon to discuss
I decided the car will be Gold
OK changed my mind. That was a moment of pure insanity
Sell it to me now I will make it Gold!
Don't forget the interior;
Attached image(s)
Clean car by current standards. I noticed the late nose replacement does not have the holes cut out.

OG = over gold OG= original german
Michael, great thread, The front panel, while Scotty's cutting and welding, Are you going to either replace the late panel or cut and weld in the section to make it look like the OG panel. Get rid of the late bumper shock section ?
Scotty,
Did you rent that blaster and were you using soda?
I agree, the documentation is value added all around. Value for the sheer value of the car, value for the owner (and the rest of us) who get to watch it all happen and value for Scotty as he can not only show his excellent work to future clients but justify the expense at the end of the job.
This was manifest destiny (for me) as far as I am concerned.
OK, so after consulting with Scotty, it looks like he will be replacing the rear trunk pan due to the poorly patched together job done in the past. He will also be removing the front fenders and front panel to correct the repairs that appear to have been done a few decades ago. I want to make sure this chassis is 100% solid to begin with. Stay tuned....
smart move...might as well while you're in there right?
Sixnotfour - I see what you mean now. I am looking into this - thanks. Michael
Etched primed where it counts.

Thanks for the new pictures. Chassis stiffening kit coming next!
We need a new 70-71 front panel. If anyone has one, please PM Michael or I

Amazing progress. It's also amazing just how much rust hides on these cars....glad you are derusting it now!
Looks like the right {passenger) side headlight bucket maybe a later one.
shorter in depth.. Great Progress
Surprised or expected?
I am quite pleased with the progress and work Scotty is doing. This is going to be one clean, rust-free Six. I am real excited to see stuff going onto the chassis (stiffening kit) and bad work being removed to be repaired correctly.
I am really looking forward to seeing the front end installed correctly as well as the rear trunk floor.
I know I am but I love this little car.
Garold Schaffer suggested I contact Brad Mayeur at 914 Limited in Illinois and it turns out he may have a clean front panel with very minor damage to the outboard driver's side off one of his cars. I am hoping to have pictures of it early this week so we will know if it will work or if we need to continue the hunt.
Socalandy: Scotty is definitely doing a great job. My hope is it ends up as nice as your car will definitely be.
I appreciate all of the advise and suggestions from other people who love these cars too. I definitely do not want to have something done and then come to regret it later. A great example was the front panel. As soon as I found out from sixnotfour the old panel had the intrusions into the trunk and was therefore not model year correct, it had to go.
Had we carried on using the old panel and 6 months down the road learned the difference that would have been costly and disappointing.
There's no more junk in Michaels trunk Still have a bit of finishing work to do ( including stamping the correct numbers ) but all the big worlk is done
Attached image(s)
Looking good!
Practice for the crappy collision repair you noticed on my car.
YAY!!!! Nice to see that new panel in place. Please note that Scotty reinstalled the access holes as came stock. Nice work Scotty!
I have the front halves of the L@R inner outer rockers if you need them.
nos repo ??
Attached thumbnail(s)
Yup. I need those and I think Scotty is talking with you.
Thanks very much for offering 'em up. Michael
Chasing down a very nice set of front fenders......keep your fingers crossed.
did you find a front nose section or will this work. From a 70 -4 dead and parted out
Attached thumbnail(s)
Its a replacement panel like what was on his -6..
I appreciate you keeping an eye out for me but I found a panel at 914 LTD and Brad shipped it out this morning to Scotty.
Now I really need a pair of NOS front fenders......
Looking for opinions.... Scott and I were talking today and he asked me if I had plans for an oil cooler for my car. I told him I really did not want to have an in-trunk cooler like the GT cars have. I am leaning towards a 911 style trombone cooler in one of the front fenders with the GT (PMB) oil line kits (they look so very nice) to get the oil up there.
But to be honest, I really do not know if that would do the job or not. Please recall I have an '89 stock 3.2 going in the car and the car will not be tracked/auto crossed. It will be street driven.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, East Bay to be more specific, and in the summer, 100 degrees is not uncommon. So if you have an (knowledgable ) opinion, please chime in so I hopefully make the correct choice.
I really do not want to cut the body up to accommodate a cooler. Especially after we sourced a correct front panel for the car - thank you Brad at 9-1-4 LTD
OK so who is the A-hole that messed with the site somehow so that when we type 9-1-4 it changes it to X19?
Thanks Mark - I will shoot him an email.
Rich Johnson has a contact for under rear trunk coolers too. He's from Texas and hasn't had issues on his hot 3.0.
I'm going this route unless someone comes up with another good idea...engine lid mount is an option too, but might not be enough on it's own.
Engine lid would be a no-go with the Motronic injection. Also, and this might sound dumb, but I really like the way the underside of our cars look and I do not want to add stuff to detract from the stock-ish look. That's why I keep thinking the trombone or a small oil cooler in the front fender well is the best option so far.
did your dash assembly have the number you were looking for on it?
914
no X19
I know....the suspense is killing me!
More than there would be in the front where it belongs.
Put it in front. Looks like a stock 914-6(/GT)
Cut, notch and rechrome the front bumper. Purchase a narrow GT lower valance.
-or-
Put a 2.0T motor in it.
damn dog, your right ,but this right side kit is what I would run on this particular SIX;
http://www.elephantracing.com/oilhandling/914coolerkit/914plumbingkit.htm
Or No, Do what SoCalAndy is doing...GT oil lines, Setrab Cooler and Mocal Thermo.
We can drop ship...
Hi everyone and thanks for your input and suggestions. I value all opinions as I am by no means an expert at any of this stuff. So, If I were building a GT replica I would of course go with the GT cooler up front as it is a terrific looking solution which functions better than it looks and that says a lot. Believe me there was a moment when I was thinking about building this car that I actually made the decision to make it a GT replica with flares and all- but with a rear valance installed (no offense to the GT's who run w/o).
Then I actually thought more about the car's history and I do feel as since there are fewer '71's than '70's, that I had an obligation to do the best I could to keep it stock looking as much as possible. That resulted in my changing course and the decision to keep it a stock-bodied Six. And I have not wavered from that decision ever since.
I mean the little changes we are making, chassis stiffening kit, early S calipers with vented rotors, GT rear calipers with vented drilled rotors, deep six wheels finished to factory standards, factory '71 color of Light Ivory (even though the car used to be gold), side-shift conversion to my Six transaxle and the addition of a Renn Shifter and linkage, a stock '89 3.2 with Motronic, exhaust with heat exchangers that appear as similar to stock as possible and yet allow the 3.2 to run correctly, F&R stock 914 sway bars and bushings, double wrapped stock steering wheel, keeping the frog warts (lights) on the fenders, keeping the stock antenna, adding LED tail lights and 3rd brake light as cleanly as is possible. All that is being done to make the car safer to operate today while still staying true to the car.
However, and I will say this again, politely, I DON'T want to cut up my trunk - really. Now if there is no other viable option, then of course I would have to do it to keep the engine cool and the car running w/o problems. I like the look of the notched bumper/valance and that is not my objection as it really is a low-profile modification. But as soon as you open the trunk.....all you see is the cooler shroud and the hoses.
So we have about 2 months to figure this out before the 3.2 gets bolted in to trial fit and mock-up everything so we have no surprises later.
Come on all you brainiacs put your thinking caps on and tell me why the front fender cooler with the GT lines and a Porsche thermostat would not be sufficient for my specific build/use.
My bias is based on two former Sixes I had. My first, a '70 with a 2.7 had no cooler at all and I was maybe in my mid-20's and drove the car pretty hard pretty regularly and it never over-heated or had a problem.
My next Six was also a '70 but I put a 3.0 with injection in it. Now that car had heating issues almost immediately. We added a Porsche thermostat and braided flex steel line up the driver's side to the front of the car and installed 2 small VW 411 (?) coolers, one behind each fog light grill. Of course I lost my fog lights but the two small coolers and the hardware connected to it ran flawlessly with no leaks and absolutely no overheating.
Those experiences are what cause me to believe that the thermostat controlled GT lines up the side of the car connected to a small by comparison to the GT cooler, cooler would likely suffice for me.
Please keep me on track and send me your ideas and thoughts. It takes a whole community to build a nice car. You see what I did there? Thanks a lot for your support and advise. I love these little cars.
Michael
This looks like it would work and you could keep the bumper stock
Attached image(s)
HMMMMM....that looks vaguely familiar. Well we know that worked because that was what apparently worked for years on my car. But it interferes with the fog lights and required cutting big holes in the front panel. But, it is essentially a big trombone cooler in the front.
I am still leaning towards something in the front fender......I know, I am stubborn.
Yeah...small detail to work out....
A 911 does not either
Did Scotty get the parts ??
You know I was kind of thinking the same thing. I didn't think the 911 had a flow through venting for the front fender cooler but I have not owned an early 911 for quite some time.
I believe he received the parts but am not sure....I am awaiting new pictures to be posted. Hopefully they will show your parts and the front clip I got from Brad.
Still need a darn set of NOS front fenders.........................................
I see one posted in the classified for $1K but that just seems a little expensive to me. Thoughts?
no the 911's didn't have much for airflow up there either, but by the time they went to the 3.2 engines, they put a small radiator and fan up there, presumably because the 3.2 was running too hot with a trombone
I have one of those systems and was going to see if it could be manipulated to fit in the same area on a 914, but I kind of doubt it
Have you tried under the steering rack? Just remove the cover and you should be set.
Or you can use a fiberglass front bumper top and cut a notch in the middle just above the bumper so it's only visible when looking from under the bumper. This way you can tunnel the air behind the bumper and have a cooler there.
I like the cooler/fan set-up from the later 911's. I bet Scotty can make it work
Got some smaller stuff done. filled in all of the holes form the previous oil cooling system, hammerd the front trunk back into place, mad ea patch for the engine shelf down in the hell hole, cut the rear center section out of the floor to repair and weld back in. While it is out I will also be repairing and reinforcing the clutch tube spot on the firewall.
Oh, and some goodies have arrived
Attached image(s)
Ooooo, nice front clip.
Wow that is a great looking front clip from Brad at 914 LTD. Looks way better in Scott's pictures and came with a lot of stuff too. Can't wait until Scott gets the front panel separated so we know it is as good as it looks. Of course it needs to be media blasted too.
Nice to see the new parts and the holes being filled. The front trunk pan looks terrific now.
Just need the darn NOS front fenders now.
Good practice before you work on my car.
What about a self contained box that holds a big oil cooler and 2 fans that would custom fit in the space usually taken by the spare tire. Leave the front body plugs off as well as the 2 sheet metal plugs at the bottom of the trunk. Use a GT lower valance but keep the metal bumper stock. The enclosure would be similar to a traditional front mounted cooler but the entire unit would be a drop in custom fit without actually mounting to the trunk(or cutting big holes). Just holes for the oil lines and nothing else. Thick rubber trim on the sides of the box to make it air tight. Soundproof and carpet the top. --- Just a thought.
If it works, Scotty could surely sell more.
Hi Mark-
Well my first option for the oil cooler would be the Carrera cooler with the thermostat fan in the front fender. If Scotty tell me that he can make one of those fit- it is a done deal.
If that does not fit, I may have to look at a smaller front mounted cooler in the trunk with a shroud on it. I probably do not need a cooler of the size the GT's run since my car is not going to be tracked.
I appreciate the brain-trust we have going on here. Lots of great ideas. Thanks everyone.
Have Scott talk with his friend Stephen D, we were talking about ideas for a front cooler between the bumper and body (I know, it's really tight space). He's an outside the box thinker and probably figured out a way to do it already. I planned on talking to him once my car got further along...
Thanks for the tip.
Could this be your old 914-6 ??
Attached image(s)
Hard to say. Mine was Irish Green and no flares. My other was Signal Orange with a 2.7.
OK looks like NOS front fenders is a dream.
It appears I have a very nice set of replacement fenders coming which are in excellent shape. Scotty will be seeing them at Hershey and will advise me if they are as nice as we suspect. If that is the case I will be done looking for body parts (I hope) as we will have everything.
Once I know, I will post pictures and disclose the source of these very nice fenders.
Attached image(s)
Rust be gone......
That channel on the replacement front end looks a bit tore-up......hopefully that is the worst of it.
Scotty is working on the car and I am looking forward to some new pictures soon.
Hopefully very soon we will see the front panel and fenders blasted. Then going on the car
Attached image(s)
Scotty ..I am pretty sure the one headlight bucket is a later one...shorter in depth..
The right or passenger side..
Thanks, it too will be taken care of
Excellent! So glad to see the front end getting put back together. Looking forward to seeing it straight and all welded up . Scotty is doing a great job and the documentation on this build will I hope assist others in the future with their cars.
Sixnotfour - Thanks for the information. Scott and I spoke about that issue before and it will be taken care of.
I went with a Mazda RX-7 cooler and added dual Spal fans with a thermo switch.
Next I opened up the front holes, plus added more.
Then I welded in an exhaust panel with a custom sheet metal shroud.
No big deal...
Nice cooler setup up Moparrob.
Late model doors huing, hood setting on has great lines. All the gaps are good except for the pass latch end. REALLY close at the bottom so I need to figure out what is going on there. Still alot of fitting to be done on the nose and fenders, but they're looking pretty good too Also got the closing panel pices made for the insides of the fenders. Once I'm happy with the fit of the fenderfs and nose I'll start welding these in
Attached image(s)
Great work!!!
Looking good Scott!
Very nice I love to see progress being made on my car. Scotty is doing excellent work and I look forward to all of the cutting and welding being done soon. Can't wait to see it all in primer and rust free
Looks somehow familiar..
Great work.
Oh and kudos for making your hand look so creepy in that last pic.
Great Nose Job !!
Yeah, I wonder if Obama-care will cover it???
removed pass headlight bucket and found more rust Same thing on drivers side
Looking back at the pics of the car when it arrive, I'm pretty certain the fitment issue on the passengers side door jamb was pre-existing. the front side to fender is spot on. That rear 1/4 has a lot of previous damage repair, and appears to have been cut apart and rewelded at the time of the great wreck repair. Look back at the pics after sandblasting to see the damage around the taillight opening.
Attached image(s)
I have faith that this too shall be remedied as we move forward with progress. This is going to be one correct shell to build from. This is exactly why Scotty has my car in his shop.
Unobtanuim vs. Rareium
Attached image(s)
looking great and nice score on the harness. I think Unobtanuim is more appropriate. I did a lot of searching
So every bracket you peel off has rust hiding underneath. Is the real answer to have these cars acid/chemical dipped? Patrick Motorsport seems to do that on most of there builds ???
Or maybe that wouldn't even work?
26 spot welds on that last bracket pictured? You have patience beyond your years!
I wish we were at the point Andy is where that harness was being installed into the car. But I was excited to score that harness for the car. Thanks for the pictures Scotty.
Very cool wiring harness...I bought a spare one, I think I'll probably use it, as I have an issue with the passenger side headlight/turn-signal area. I may send it off to our resident 914world harness guru if it's not in really good shape.
My original harness is going to Jeff Bowlesby so he can have an accurate pattern for future cars in need.
Awesome news, it'll help a lot of future builds!
after a brief hiauts I am getting back on Michaels car. I spent some time this past week getting the headlight bucket out of the donor section. Cleaned it up and repaired some of the rust issues it had, then got it welded in. Front panel is fit and just about ready to weld back on
Attached image(s)
Yay!!!! My car is moving forward again. Scotty is just to darn good and people know it and are taking up his time with their cars….. Seriously, that is the way it goes. I am just glad to have my car in his shop with his considerable skills at work. We need more pictures
You really brought this car around Scotty!
My car is no different than any other in his shop. We all want the dreaded rust worm eradicated for good. I can't wait to see it in color.
After 3 weekends, we finally had a good one to get my car out of his shop. So at least there is one less 914 in his shop taking up his time
Just caught up on your recent progress, Awsome!!!
More Please
soon. I have 13 jobs in the shop and only 2 of us working, so updates are going to be spread apart for a bit longer until I get a few others finished and can free up some more time and space
That's a lot of work. The tough part is getting qualified guys to help out. Collision shop guys are not always the answer. Nice so far man!
I am still waiting for the next evolution. I know Scotty has been swamped.
I saw the car yesterday. Almost back in one piece. Looking good.
I've got some pics to post either tomorrow or tuesday after the tranny clinic madness is over.
Nothing really astounding. I've just spent some time getting a final fit on the nose panel and fenders. Still working out some of the minor rust and accident issues up front. Trying to decide which of 4 fenders are going to be the best to put back on.
Thanks Mark; I appreciate that. Wow - well I am hoping it is the almost new appearing fenders we got…. Looking forward to seeing the front end all buttoned up.
That is looking great!
Small progress, but progress nonetheless. Right now I'm finishing up all the little spots on the car and new front clip that need repairs. The nose panel is all fit up and ready to weld on once these areas are done.
Attached image(s)
What is the best colour undercoating to apply under Gold?
Probably yellow…..
Regardless, it is nice to see progress. I can't wait for the next photos hopefully showing the front end all back on and rust free.
Outstanding work. I was back/forth on sandblasting, but now I'm convinced it's the right move if I ever want to feel like I really trust that I got as much of the rust-monster as possible.
Did you use a weld-through etching primer?
I've slowing been picking away at the remainder of the front end rust. The good news is it is all done
Attached image(s)
few more
Attached image(s)
Looks great!!!
We kept finding area's that needed work like this and it added time getting to paint but there's not one spot on my car that I worry about rust returning.
I am very happy to see the car move forward. Looks like the front end is close to going back on after some media blasting. Thanks Scotty I appreciate the pictures and work.
There's something wrong with that vin-tag...it starts in 914... I didn't think anyone on this board had the resources to afford a real /6
Heck, buying the Six isn't the expense.....
So it turns out moving is a good thing every 23+ years or so...I found two pictures of my last Six:
As you can hopefully tell, it was Irish Green. It was essentially stock, almost. It had a 3.0 with CSI, front oil coolers behind the fog light grills, Koni shocks, F&R sway bars and deep sixes. I had that little lip front valance which I would not use now. Car ran terrific and I sold it to further my education- tuition costs. Miss that nice little car.
Make your new one green. Scotty has the paint code all figured out.
OK, you have to share that oil cooler install setup...also how the CIS fit/worked. Inquiring minds want to know...
Whoops, forgot my 2-cents on the color...I love Irish green on a 914. Scotty's last Irish green car won an award this past weekend too.
That's an awesome color!!! Oh yeah, I'm Irish...
I keep sending Scooty stuff to paint green and it comes back Orange?
Thanks everyone. The oil coolers were VW small oil coolers and one was mounted behind each fog light grill. All stainless steel hoses and AN connections. Turbo thermostat mounted on passenger side firewall. Kept the car nice and cool- never overheated. That system may have not been in at the time of these pictures as I can see the actual fog lights still installed in the car.
The 3.0 with CIS ran perfect and never skipped a beat. We had to shave the ribs on the air-boot down a bit and we removed the engine lid cross brace and stiffened it up and moved the latch. It worked perfectly and still utilized the stock cable and latch.
Irish Green is a beautiful color- no doubt.
Gold is also beautiful.
looking like a car again

It doesn't show well in the pics, but the pass rear 1/4 is the last major metal obstacle. It's pretty mangled up from it's prior damage, and has some lousy repairs around the taillight opening. Most likely I'll be replacing the whole panel with another from a parts car. Unless someone has a NOS one laying around getting in the way That will be dealt with in a couple weeks
Attached image(s)
Happy to see the front panel is correct for the car.
Well it is 2:00 AM and I am getting ready to leave to catch a flight to Virginia to meet Scotty and see my car after 2 years. I am looking forward to meeting and talking with Scotty and seeing all he has done. We will also be talking about the next hurdle, after the rear quarter, which will be the oil cooler system and how it is going to look. I am sure there will be some pictures.
Have a great trip.
Thanks Mark. Looking forward to checking out your car too. Scotty picked me up at the airport and we got a chance to talk over some Arby's....one of my favorite fast-food places which happened to next door to Marriott. He will stop and grab me on his way to the shop in the AM so we can grab coffee and then I can go see my Six. Looking forward to seeing it again.
The good news: Your car is all done!
The bad news: Scotty painted it Gold!
Arby's Horsey Sauce puts serious Orange Peel into Paint - just sayin...
So here ya go, after 2 years I get to see my car again and check out all of the work Scotty has done. Car is looking real nice. One last hurdle, the passenger side rear quarter needs to go. So we need to find a NOS quarter....anyone have one hanging on a wall collecting dust?
Scotty and I sat down and went over the entire build, front to rear and know what direction we are heading. I hope to have the car back in my garage in August of 2015.
Oh, as you all know Scotty has an aversion to being photographed (duh) and apparently a fondness for monkeys. I still don't get the monkey thing, something about just like little humans or something.
So what about the early car Rick is using for his 6. He's pulling the front fenders, how is the rear. Obviously isn't nos but that will be a real long shot. And rick will be able to remove it properly. Just a thought.
JRust has both right & left NOS quarters. I bet he will sell.
Check with peteyd. He had a NOS quarter for sale some time ago. Not sure which one but it's a one in four shot.
Well I posted a WTB and sent a few PM's - thanks for the tips guys.
Wow! That looks surprisingly nice. Gold hhhhmm
OH - and for anyone getting any ideas, Scotty has a most excellent watch doggie, Kudzu who prefers to go by "Zu". This dog is on the job, protecting my car 24/7.
So far we are striking out on the NOS pass. rear quarter. There are at least 2 NOS driver's quarters available but nothing for the passenger side so far. The search continues.....
Absolutely. Believe me the tail light opening is really not pretty. No point in trying to cut and patch that quarter when it is an all around better solution to replace the entire quarter. Now we just need a reply nice clean quarter and Scotty will the old one off and the new one and we will be
Eagerly awaiting an update to the progress of my car.......
after not being able to source a NOS panel we ended up deciding to just use a solid, rust free used one. I still have a little metal bumping to do, then I'll slice Michael's original panel to get the door gap correct
Attached thumbnail(s)
Great work Scotty !!!
last for now
Attached image(s)
SWEET!!!! I am so happy to see that panel corrected. What a mess that was. Now all that remains is the door gap and that should .... end the major body repairs. I think the oil cooler system will be next. Thanks for the pictures Scotty
Scott - can the foam be removed without pealing back the fender. I would like all the cancer causing foam out of my car.
What a hunk of junk. Cairo needs to sell me that car for cheap!
Great work. What an awesome restoration.
Valance next week
Attached image(s)
(wolf whistle) Nice work Scotty! Soon the gold paint will flow...
That is exactly what I wanted for the front bumper. Terrific work Scotty. Oh, yeah, gonna have a GT front cooler to keep the 3.2 happy in the summer. After looking at the tons of different cooler designs out there I finally decided the GT cover was the best solution for me. Gotta get some of Shea's GT oil lines now......
Why not use a GT fiberglass bumper and valance?
Terrific question really. I am not a fan of fiberglass as it tends to develop cracks and just does not fit quite right. Additionally, weight is not an issue for this car as it is not going to be tracked at all.
If I were building a GT bodied car, and had plans to race it, maybe then I would consider glass for some of the parts.
I was afraid to say the C word......
Dumb question, but are you planning on having a front license plate?
OMG!
Scotty B!
You're a hero.
I have just read the entire post to date and am in awe of the meticulous and painstaking methods of restoration of this Six.
I am now more cognizant of the scope of the repairs I must do to my -4(8).
As I feared, the rust free 914 is mostly so but with a borescope was able to discover the wormholes at the front fender/A pillar joint, mere pinpricks, diameter of a pencil.
Nonetheless the fenders must be cut to facilitate repairs or removed entirely.
So,on with this mission to build the perfect 914.
there's restored and scotty b restored.
Very nice work, Scoot. I especially like how you faired the bumper at the cut out. Functional and beautifully done. And Epstein, I wouldn't count on that thin metal fairing to give any crash protection unless you hit a stiff marshmallow.
My car is not going to have a front plate. The holes in the front bumper will disappear before it gets chromed. If I pick up a ticket I will figure something out to get it taken care of.
These days, anything can be "chromed"with the latest processes.
The shiny stuff is what blows her skirt up and turns her head so I'm all for it.
The toughest part of chroming grp is the print-through,even on a heavy gelcoat.
I've found the use of polyester is most prone to develop the effect.
A v-bagged s-glass layup in epoxy is less likely to show the dimples.
Worked on the front valance a bit. Trying something new-ish. More later if I'm happy with the way it turns out
Attached image(s)
m hummmm....
is that my lower gt valennce?
I like-a
I like what you are doing there. That resembles the opening on Mark's GT valance- right? Sweet!
Lovin it!
That is gonna to be super sweet Scotty.... & nice pocket pool playin avatar.
Bravo, sir, bravo!
I think it is gong to look very nice. You know I do not want it to be obvious, and I think the direction you are headed is perfect. I can't wait to see it with a little primer on it and mounted on the car.
Then we have to think about some kind of screening or grill, possibly like the fog light grills to make it blend and protect the oil cooler from rocks and debris.
So I am taking a ride to drop my deep sixes off at Harvey Weidman's this morning to have them restored. I hope they are all nice and true with no issues so he has good wheels to begin with.
Great thread, just read all 22 pages whilst watching England Beating NZ in the rugby What a talented guy Scotty is. I'm sure this will be a wonderful car. I'm no jealous (much!!!)
What's wrong with purple Fuchs?
I dropped the wheels off with Harvey today. Got a tour of the shop and he explained the entire restoration process. I am having all 5 wheels widened 1" so I can fit a little bit wider tire on them to keep the rear hooking up a little bit better with the 3.2. I want all 5 to match. I also gave him 4 new center caps along with my 4 original center caps so I can have a couple spares and they will match the wheels as closely as possible.
Harvey is a terrific guy who enjoys what he does and it certainly shows in his finished product. I can't wait to see these wheels when they are finished.
I blasted the oil tank and checked it over, cleaned up a previous repair, then sent it out to Pacific oil cooler for a thorough cleaning, pressure testing and refinish
Attached image(s)
Looks nice. Glad to see it is done. - will you be sealing it up so nothing gets inside of it in the interim?
I knew that but wanted to remind everyone not to let these sit unsealed. Thanks for the terrific work Scotty.
3.5 struts arrived and I was feeling a bit destructive soooooo. the broken nuts seem to be a regular issue I run across. Both of the new struts were broken, as was one of his originals. I have a box full of them so I'll grab one more good one, and repair these later
Fab work on the valance is done save for some clean up. some dents, warpage from welding, and I want to spend a little more time on some of the lines to sharpen them up.
Attached image(s)
:gasp: I see front license plate mounting holes in that bumper...
No worries Jeff - all that will be gone. Scotty will strip that bumper and then it gets re-chromed to look like new - No holes of course.
That oil cooler opening looks very sweet Scotty.
I am so looking forward to seeing some of the parts for my car plated, powder coated and ready to be installed.
Thanks for the update pictures.
FYI, These are available new with fresh rubber from Porsche

Not stock....but awesome.
alittle something that has been in the works on and off for a few weeks now. My bead roller isn't deep enough to get to where I needed the beads so I've been trying to coordinate with a good friend in northern Va to come up and use his roller. Between the weather and each of us getting sick at different times it's taken a while, but today was the day. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so I only had the cell to take pics with.
I still have some final fitting to do, and finish bending the flanges, when I am back at the car and I'll get better pics then. But for now here's some teasers. Gotta practice my Al welding before I go much further too. Been about 8 years since I've done any Al

Awesome work as usual
Way cool!!! I have been looking forward to seeing progress on this oil cooler project. Now as soon as we get the GT hard lines, courtesy of Eric at PMB Performance, we can mock-up the whole oil cooler system fitment and then move into some final prep for painting the tub
Very nice!!! Much better than an f'glass reproduction!
If my under the rear trunk cooler with fans does not suffice on my engine, I'll go front trunk and want one of these also!
Sweeeeeet...love it!
Now that you'e done one the second will be easy.
When can I pick it up ?
I this kind of . I would like to see the equipment in action. Does the metal shrink/pull proportionally with the depth of the channel?
It's is not going to get painted- it will end up with a brushed aluminum finish I want to be able to see the welds and have the contrast when you open the hood of the aluminum vs. the gold...errr final color .
Mine will be red - of course. Maybe.
What oil cooler is going under that duct ?
I'm doing something like this with fans. I'm not sure Cairo will need as much oil cooling as me since he is using an on engine oil cooler. Mine will only be cooled from the front and a block off plate used on the engine.
Attached image(s)
I'm sure you can but I've driving in 100+ temps and the needle is rock solid at 180
Here's a picture for you. I think you have room in front or in back of the cooler with the right size fan
Attached image(s)
Thanks
I'm going with a copy of an original cooler. All metric plumbing front to back with a 911 thermostat under the engine shelf on the drivers side.
I also want to copy the metal cooler shroud like Scotty is doing.
Anyone willing to loan a fiberglass cover that I can use as a guide ?
Sorry for the hijack.

went to a friends shop last week before I headed south and punched some louvers. One for Michael, one for Mark
Attached thumbnail(s)
Cool!. Thanks, Scott! Jeez, I didn't even ask for this. Can you paint mine in off-Irish Green?
Thanks again,
Michael.
Loving that! Can't wait to see that panel welded in and the cooler system completely mocked up. Thanks for the picture.
Bent some brackets, cut some holes, laid some pipe and cut a really big hole
Attached image(s)
Tore down the engine and delivered to the builder
Attached image(s)
The wheels are Mercedes.
I'm not sure if the builder wants his info out there. He's an older guy that is retired now and still does occasional side work
Wow! That is a big freakin' hole you cut in my trunk.
Anyway, what has got to be has got to be. Can't wait to see the new panel welded in the floor and the reminder of the oil cooler fab-work done. I know for sure where the oil lines turn into the trunk Scotty will make a nice piece to cover and protect them. (BTW, thank you Jeff for the beautiful lines)
The engine is coming along nicely. I expect that to be back with Scotty by the end of the month. Doing a complete rebuild, all new bearings, rings, replacing the pistons and cylinders (staying 3.2) using the 964 cams and the heads are getting new guides, valves, etc. I expect the engine will be perfect. I really like the guy doing the work - he has over 30 years building Porsche engines and definitely knows his stuff (Thanks Scotty for the hook-up).
This car is going to be so nice, Michael will never drive it...
No no no! I am seriously planning to drive this as my around town car. I want to enjoy it and cruise it around.
Are you/do you need to use rubber isolators on the cooler mounts?
Yes. I am sure Scotty plans to use rubber isolators on the mounts. Thanks for mentioning that though.
Bill- the engine parts are already at the machine shop. My understanding is we will have them back fairly soon.
You know I was expecting the engine to take a few months too. However this builder has a machine shop he uses regularly and they apparently jump on his work ASAP. As soon as the heads arrived they jumped on them. I can't wait to get the report re the crank and rods, etc. The builder said they looked perfect but were still going to get inspected, polished, etc. I really am looking forward to seeing the engine assembled and ready to install.
I think this build is going to really come together now.
I'm totally fine with that. I would love for them to bench run it before it goes into he car.
Can anyone at least reveal where mr. x has his machine work done? I am not looking for a builder, just a competent east coast machine shop.
Once I get the invoice I will let you know who did the machine work. Remind me if I forget....
Just a few engine pics - nothing to see here really. Oh, these 911 headers might be available if someone is interested.....
Engine
Crank
Heads as they begin work
umm we already made a deal on those headers
OOOPPPS. Forget it guys, the headers belong to Scotty. My bad! At what point is it fair to claim old age?
Scotty can claim old age.
He is really really old.
Kinda sad how old he is.
Are you sure he's 'memberin' right?
Oh, and Eric says he is fat.
To be clear, Eric Shea said that scotty b is fat.
All of the machine work is completed - the heads are all assembled. All of the parts have arrived and this weekend the engine assembly will begin:
Saw your car when I dropped in Wednesday to check on my 911. It looks like it won't be long know and you'll be driving...the car looks great!
Thanks Bill I appreciate that. Yeah Scotty tells me it will be back in my garage by August 1st 2015. Yeah that is only about 3 1/2 months away.......
Me too! I am excited to start to see it all come together. I have been sending Scotty parts all along to make sure he will have what he needs to get it assembled. Still need some stuff, but the big ticket items are all with Scotty now.
I know I need:
send bumpers out for chroming
new electric radio antenna
dash plate for the Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio
full carpet kit
early metal fog light grills I can chrome
fog lights ( I want to see if anyone makes an LED light that fits the stock grills)
space saver tire that will mount on my 15x7 Fuchs spare rim to mount vertically against bulkhead like Eric's
new windshield
new rubber trim
new Karman body tag to rivet onto the door post
a pair of nice loud horns
Off the top of my head, that is what I still need.
Hurry up! WCR is two weeks away...
I love pictures of disassembled engines!!!!
Me too! Especially when it is my engine
This is a major milestone for my car. Once the engine makes it back to Scotty he will be free to assemble the engine and transaxle. I think he has all of the engine tin being powder coated and he has already (I think) painted the engine shroud. A pretty significant chunk of cash for that to be fresh and ready to install.
youre gonna need the extra pulley removed ..
That is right. I will let them know.
you may want to get some coated head studs or heat paint those for corrosion protection
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/0790/POR_0790_ENGCYL_pg6.htm#item18
my 2 Cents
Engine is essentially assembled. Of course Scotty needs to blast the valve covers back to original appearance and add all of the rest of the bits and pieces to make it go Vroommmm.
My engine is back in Scotty's capable hands
Wow! Fast!!!
I think the usual holdup is all of the machine shop work. In this case the builder knew the engine was coming and he had already put it in line at the machine shop so it all worked out perfectly. Now Scotty will get all of the rest of the parts squared away. I need to send the injectors out to get rebuilt, who should send those to?
Thanks Mark I will get the completed form to Scotty so he can get them sent out.
I got the injectors back- 2 were stuck when they arrived. They are all now perfect and ready to install. Great customer service.
I found a picture of a 3.2 in stock form and like the way it looks. I asked Scotty to use this picture as the model for my engine finishes. Although mine will have the guards red engine shroud.
Very nice. I removed some very colorful powder coat on mine and tried to get it pretty clean. I'd like my fan strap to be gold again, Remember that our engines are turned 180 and sunk down in the engine bay, so unlike the 911's, not that much of the engine shows once it's in the car. But I can appreciate you wanting it to look right.
A gallon of guards red should be enought to paint the shroud. I know what to do with the extra....
Hi Mark: Yeah, I still want it to look nice even though the fan is against the firewall. Scotty did tell me that a gallon should cover the shroud, I thought that was a little excessive, but I see what is going on now.
Scotty had a chance to get the lower valve covers machined down. Came out nice.
Here is what the engine is starting to look like. Scotty just set the injection, etc., on it to get an idea of how it will look. All that stuff will be bead blasted so it looks nice and fresh.
I am glad we went with the guards red for the engine shroud.
Great! Looking forward to the pics
I guess that I am not smart enough to figure out what the loop modification on the rear of the trailing arms is for. Or what the bottom picture is for that matter
However, beautiful work as usual!
Scotty - Thanks for posting up some pictures.
Yup - Just some "D" rings in the event the car is towed somewhere..... hopefully not. But I figured since we are stripping and refinishing the trailing arms, why not add the "D" rings. I think Scotty did a great job of making them fit the contours of the trailing arm.
I could also use them to mount some neon lights under the car so they glow while cruising down the street ....well, no.
Excellent idea!!! Any similar plans for tow points on the front? I don't like the idea of them chaining to the triangular of the control arms. I have had to have my car towed a few times. The first couple, I didn't pay much attention and they mangled my rear triangles where the donuts are.
Carry on...
Yes, we will be adding something similar to the front to hook to in the unlikely event we need to tow/tie down the car.
D rings, very cool idea
Not to highjack but since the subject has come up.....quick question on the 930 valve covers.....do the ribs need to be machined to fit on a stock -6? Are the genuine Porsche VCs the only ones to go with?
My recollection is the turbo valve covers will not go on and off w/o machining them as the ribs add to much size/thickness to them to remove w/o lowering the engine down.
I have no experience with non-OEM valve covers.
The other way to do this, as Scotty kind of commented on, is to just machine down the part of the valve cover which would hit during removal. I have seen them both ways and either works as long as the valve covers are media blasted and look nice.
So I was able to source a beautiful Blaupunkt Frankfurt (thanks very much T.C.) and an NOS dash plate (thanks again Jeff) for my car. Had the radio restored at German Car Radio Repair in North Hollywood, CA (thank you Herman) and also bought the cable to stream from my iPhone, should I feel the need. This is exactly the radio I wanted in my car and I am very pleased to have it.
Things have slowed a bit as I try to finish up a 911 that is nearing the end but I have been trying to spend a little time in the evenings on Michael's car. Sandblasted the doors last week with some other stuff I had to get done and they both turned out a little surprising. Fixed the passengers door, but the drivers ended up being bad enough I'm going to pull another one I have, and see how it is. Steering wheel is ready to go out to Dallas Custom as soon as the paint sets up good

Nice to see some new shots. Let me know when the wheel ships and I will call them. Thanks Scotty.
OK so I got some photos from Palo Alto Speedometer. I have asked them for all new sending units matched to the gauges used so everything works as it should. The only unresolved issue, and we may have it resolved but have not tested it yet, is I switched to a later electronic speedometer to add the 6th digit in the odometer since my car has about 89K original documented miles on it and I do not want it to roll over to 0 in 11K miles. I want to keep the actual real mileage recorded. Hartmut told me that VDO makes a converter to go from mechanical to electric pulses to drive the speedo. Apparently I would leave the stock speedo cable going from the transaxle to the gauge area in the dash and then connect the converter so it resides near the actual gauge for a good signal and to keep it out of the elements. If that works, and I really hope it does, we are good with the gauges. Sorry, I can't find the picture of the speedometer right now. When I do, I will post it. All of these will have the "silver dots" in the center like stock. Hartmut is great to work with and I think these are going to be perfect for my car:
Here is the triple gauge rendering. It has gone out for the actual gauge face to be made.
OK- Here is the speedo face, nothing to see here really. The tachometer pictured is an earlier version and the redline needed to be corrected to reflect the actual 3,2 redline. That has been corrected as you can see above.
I like the gauges a lot. Is the size of the font on the final tach face smaller? It looks much better to my eyes than the first before the redline correction.
Thanks - I think it may just be the lighting or the angle of the photo. Otherwise it should be the same.
Should it not be spelled "OEL"?
Hi Jeff- The other 914 gauges I have show it "oil" so that is what I went with. Now if we were in Germany.......and it was the 5th Wednesday of the month......
Nathan - Thanks for the compliment. Here is the link to the radio repair shop that did the work. I think the cord to stream from my iPhone was about $70 or so. The radio went straight to Scotty so I can't even go look at it and tell you who made the cord. https://plus.google.com/109380045391805371483/about?gl=us&hl=en
What was the final decision on the color (not to restart that debate)? I thought about this thread today. I finally got a chance to get under a '71 I bought a while back (pretty rough; almost a parts car). I thought it was Bahia red, but it was a repaint. It appears to actually have been gold metallic originally. Very cool color.
I'll tell you for a $100. LOL
So here is my steering wheel via Dallas Customs. Great service and quick turn-around time. Double wrapped the rim and single=wrapped the spokes. Thankfully, Mark (mepstein) reminded me about not double wrapping the spokes - thanks for looking out for me bud.

Dang.... that's a nice wheel. How much to get that done?
horn pad or hockey puck?
Hey Rob - it was a bit steep, $449. But in my defense, your hands are on it overtime you get in the car and I really like their work .
Mark - horn pad unless I hit the lottery and can afford a puck sometime in the future.
Scotty is going to be getting back on this project next week and we should see some serious progress.
Quick update - Tweet (Dan) got my locks all disassembled, cleaned up and ready to go off to the chromer for some triple chroming.
easing back into Michaels car as things start to smooth out. I have a 911 and BMW just about ready for paint and once they are done, Michael and Marks 914's are the main focus for me
The only real damage was the minor butt dent in the rear trunk, and a small spot on the underside of the hood
Attached image(s)
Looks great. That car is going to be amazing.
Great pictures.
Nice to get some good body news for a change. We went through a bit of rust and damaged panel issues on my car. Glad that appears to be all behind us now.
I look forward to seeing my chassis all in primer.
Thanks for posting up the new pictures Scotty.
Looking good!! Its really coming along
Scotty - Please post up the link on the Pelican car. I could not find it. Then again, I am terrible at searches - go figure.....
I really enjoy seeing these cars getting their color.
Thanks Mark. I found the 3 page thread that concludes with the welding of a lot of nice new metal. But the car is no where near paint. Is there another thread I am missing? I was expecting to see it all primed, blocked and ready for color.
Scott was referring to my car ('72 T) in that thread.
The 911 he is ready to paint is a rare '73 911S. Don't know where those pictures are...maybe early S registry?
OK I will give the S Registry a peak. Thanks Bill
Great work, as always Scotty.
Is it turning gold yet?
I believe we could be getting close.....
New to the Forum (at least posting on 914W).
Still taking solicitations on the color choice, by chance?
I'd like to offer a compromise on the Gold Metallica, which BTW would look great with matching BBS E50's.
Maybe a nice 1970 Green Metallic (L97P). Since you noted Irish Green, adding a bit of metal flake wouldn't be too much of a stretch.
Welcome and the metallic green is a terrific color. And would be one of the top color choices for sure. I love Adriatic Blue and had my Six come that color there would be no questions about color.
When I find a way to end my originality fetish.
My next ride will be Lilac.
I'm still dealing with the backlog, and some issues my former employee left so it's been an hour here and there on Michaels until these other issues are sorted. Engine tin is all repaired and modded and waiting on the powder coater, heater boxes were a PITA. The metal used for the shell was thin to begin with, and being rusted on the inside, it kept blowing through as I was welding.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Impressive!
I'm missing a few pics, they may be on my shop camera. Nothing major, just the finished work on the engine tin and the underside of the trunk finished up. If I find them I'll add them.
Nice work on those H.E.'s!
Terrific job on the heat exchangers - they look great!
Thanks for posting some pictures it keeps me going.
Why save those rusty headers?
Isn't there a better option?
Hi Mike- If I could order a set of new heat exchangers with bigger tubes for the 3.2 I would. Until tat is an option I saw no reason to drop $3K+ on the exact same thing I already have, albeit brand new. Scotty will make these look great, no leaks and then they get ceramic coated -hopefully.
What an awesome build! Cairo, I'm in Petaluma and gotta meet you at some point.
Scotty - u da man, man!
Hi,
I just asked Per at Stoddards this only yesterday and he advised that 'We are considering the larger ones, but need to sell through the smaller ones first.' Make of that what you will. I live in the UK so have no option but to have heat exchangers ! Might buy a OEM set and convert with 1 5/8" pipes which seems the way to go for a 3.2 engine.
good luck with the build !
Chris.
Yeah, I spoke with Stoddards too when they first announced the NOS heat exchangers and they told me the same thing. What I took from that was in a couple years they might make some bigger tube heat exchangers.
It is my hope that my car will have long since been in my garage with me going for weekly drives.
Hi Tygaboy - Thanks so much. It is my sincere hope that Scotty documenting this build to this level will allow others to fully appreciate the issues these cars can present when you start to work on them.
Keep in mind, aside from a dragging brake caliper in the r/f, I drove this car when I bough it and it looked pretty decent.
It seems we get a few of these projects which stall and are abandoned when the real depth of the work required rears its ugly head. I just want people to go into these cars/projects with their eyes wide open so their expectations are realistic.
I love my Six and will keep it until I can no longer drive. Then, if my son is a responsible car person, he can have it. If he is not interested, I would make sure it went to a true Six lover so others can appreciate these beauties for decades to come.
I can't begin to count how many times I have had people tell me
" you'll love doing this car, it doesn't have any rust"
I have YET to get into one of them and not find any issues. The 356-C coupe I did a couple years ago was the biggest surprise as it truly did not have ANY rust. Other than that, I have taken in cars that were running driving mid west cars with no signs of rust, garage kept east coast cars, 2 California cars only to start stripping them and find holes filled with bondo, fiberglass, or in the case of Michaels car, severe accident damage. One 911 we did a couple years ago had all of this, and the chassis was twisted, and this guy was the 3rd owner....his brother was the second. He was one of the ones that told me the car was a gem, just needed a little work on one rear 1/4 that had been hit previously. I have had several that had been wrecked early on in life and repaired at the standards of that day. ( Michales and Marks cars both were ) Now, multiply that one cars issues by 5-6 cars and you end up with one hell of a headache to deal with.
I make sure I post some of the worst stuff I run across just for the very reason Cairo mentioned. I know people get into this kind of restoration with big eyes and big hearts until the reality hits, because they rarely see the true ugliness that CAN lie beneath the paint. It's near impossible to tell a lot of the time exactly what condition a car is in until it has been stripped. I have been fooled by several customers cars, and have also made 2 bad purchases of my own based on buying on emotion, and not digging deep before handing over the $$$. There are at least 3 members here that have shown up with what they thought were solid cars, and right in front of them I tore out fiberglass that was covering holes, bondo'd and painted. Roofing tar over shitty longs with paint on top of it. The '1987 911 that had a piece of spring steel welded between the 2 A arms to keep the front end " in place " that when I unbolted it, it literally fell out of the car, leaving one of the mounts dangling by a chunk of RTV ( I have pics of that, and the piece of RTV covered floor pan hanging on the wall in the shop.) That guy had been told by another shop he just needed a front end alignment !
If I had taken pics of everyone of the "patches" I've run across, it would make a pretty intertaining book.
I have a 911 in right now that was owned by a Porsche tech, and then another Porsche fan. None of us were aware of the shit that was under the car. We knew the front pan had issues, but had no idea until he undercoating was stripped off that the whole front end was shot. Wrecked, pulled back out, rusted, patched, bondo'd, painted and undercoated.
I even had a 4 year old Toyota pickup come in several years ago from a dealer we did work for that had the frame almost rusted in two. It had gone through an auction house in Pa. The buyer put the car on his lift to change oil and a chunk of bondo came of the frame. Turned out I scraped the under coating off, popped the bondo off, pulled the duct tape off and found the frame so rusted it was flexing I told the dealer to send a rollback, I was NOT going to drive it back
I hope my posts don't discourage anyone from taking a big job, but what I do hope, is that they make people take a better look at their potential project. ALWAYS remember a 300.00 PPI by someone with the knowledge can save you 10's of thousands down the road
All pre-galvanized Porsches (or any car really) has some rust. It's just if it's been fixed already by the PO or you will need to do the fixin.
My car was/is a nice one and it had rust in the usual places along with some "WTF were they thinking when they fixed that" repairs.
PPI saved me probably $10-15k on my 356 purchase...by passing on one car and getting a known good one.
Word to the Scotty-man.
Oh, just opened the mail....the State of California, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, is offering me $1000.00 for my Six if I have it scrapped. Uhhh, I think I'll pass, as generous as their offer is.
Some goodies have shown up from Bruce Stone and Palo Alto
Attached thumbnail(s)
Damn that's sexy!
I also started making the center console last week. I'll probably get it finished this afternoon or tomorrow. I'm making it as I feel the factory would have so we can completely cover the interior with the same leather the seats and door panels will get, assemble it with screws or rivets ( not decided which yet, but leaning towards riv-nuts and screws ) , then cover the exterior with the proper edge bound Perlon like the carpet will be. FWIW I have a couple complete cars here I am fitting the console to, since Michael's car is completely gutted
I met with the upholsterer a couple weeks ago, and am waiting on him to finish a Chebby he has in,and then I can take Michael's interior down. Dash, windshield header and rollbar pad will be going out to JUST DASHES later this week. The lock set is finally done after a LONG ordeal with the chrome shop, as soon as it is all back from Tweet I'll post pics. Safe to say, I have found a new chrome shop halfway across the country. Some day when I have time to sit down I'll do a little write up on our experience with the chroming, and some things you can do to avoid the issues we ran into
Attached thumbnail(s)
Good to know about the chrome shop!
That setup is the best for a stock panel...a full set of gauges in a 3-gauge setup!
Very cool deposit box setup. I have always wondered about the flimsy stock pieces.
Thanks for posting those Scotty. I always forget that posting pictures is a pain in the butt and takes times. I am sure at the end of the day Scotty, like everyone else here, just wants to relax and put their tootsies up and enjoy a cold one.
It is nice to see some of the work we outsourced returning to Scotty after some delays. But when you are good at what you do, and people know it, people want their stuff done too. That is just the way it goes. The gauges speak for themselves - they look absolutely beautiful. Not inexpensive but well worth it. Bruce's work is also just artwork too. Thanks to Bruce and Palo Alto Speedometer (Palo Alto, CA) for great work.
I am looking forward to seeing the chassis moving forward. Scotty should be done at this point with the actual metal fabrication and rust issues. I am hoping the next steps will be body work and then primer and color. Once my chassis is in color then it will start coming together. I am hoping to see a lot of pictures coming soon.
OK.... so my thread has been dormant for so long that only one person (thank you JmuRiz) wants to comment?????
Is it done yet
Not quite.....we are getting closer to color though. I am hoping Scotty is shooting color by June 2016.
we will keep it on the first page as a reminder..
I'm having Scotty clear over bare steel to avoid the color fiasco.... BTW, that original deposit box was a shambles. I am glad Scotty is doing a new one out of metal.
Gold gold gold
gold color =poopoo for this car.
As I believe in full disclosure.....Jake94526 is my identical twin brother.
I've never met you, but I still like messin' with you (since I'm friends with Scotty, although he may deny it)
BTW with all the work and details done/planned on this car, you could paint it Sepia brown and it'll look amazing.
Hey my first 914 was actually Sepia Brown and I liked it a lot. But it's OK, I have thick skin. So feel free to mess away.
I have been reading through this thread for a while now and finally caught up.
This car is going to be beautiful.
I vote gold.
BigKenSteele - Sorry, I totally missed the Jake reference. That is one funny commercial though.
So What color is it going to be ....I forgot???
We won't know for sure until Scotty shoots it. I have considered Gold, Green, Blue and White. As time has passed all of those have been a possibility.
As it's the real deal, why not the as built color on the door jam tag?
Yeah it would certainly be the right thing to do if I was going to just sell it. It left the factory gold and within 2 years was painted black - for a good reason, IMHO. My wife and I both do not care for gold on any car. Sorry, no offense to gold car lovers.
Additionally, were we not doing a complete bare metal restoration, one where we say left the trunks, etc., gold, that would have been the smart thing to do. However, as you likely all know at this point, the car came completely apart, stripped to absolutely nothing, and completely media blasted inside and out. So, the only thing remaining that says this car was gold is the COA.
I do not plan to sell this car. But if I ever had to sell it, I do not believe the "hit" for the color change would be significant as the color change is done like the factory would paint the car from scratch - knowing Scotty and his work, probably way better than the factory would or could do. So you won't be seeing gold under paint chips or scratches 20 years from now.
Also, I am not restoring this car for concours competition. It no longer has its original engine, (since about 1980) though I do have an original '71 Six engine case which is 20-something numbers off my original case. An '87 3.2 with Motronic injection is going in the car. We also converted the Six transaxle to a side-shifter to make the car more enjoyable to drive. The last significant change was the addition of the GT style oil cooler system to keep the car nice and cool. Any other changes we made were really of no significance.
So, it is safe to say, this Six will not return to gold. It is also fairly safe to say white is no longer in the running. So that leaves blue or green.......
Stay tuned Six fans and hopefully in the near future, the color will be revealed.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who has followed my thread and made suggestions or comments along the way. Please keep them coming as the car still has a long ways to go and we will need the help. I will tip my hat to Pat Garvey who really talked me off the edge of doing GT flares and such when I first started down this path. It was after much reflection regarding Pat's comments that I decided to keep the body essentially stock.
Flares are so yesterday.
Hi Mark - I love the GT flares but came to realize that so few '71 Sixes exist that I would likely be banished to Hell if I added flares to my car.
If I do another 914, it will be a 4 cylinder and have flares. Of course that would be once the wife divorces me when I float that balloon......if I have anything left.
...float that ballon. Funny. I'll remember that one. Never heard it before.
I wish you would just hand Scotty your wallet so he could finish this project. WCR is only a month away...
Hi Mike - Me too, but I have a few different irons in the fire all of which require cash.
Finances have not really been the problem thus far. Scotty is a well known expert when it comes to our cars and others. Therefore he stays busy and everyone wants their car done. That being said, based upon what Scotty has told me, I believe my car has finally arrived at the front of the line, so to speak, and we should be making some good progress quickly.
Though the car was initially going to be done and in my garage by last August 1st, I would love to think it might be there by this August 1st.
Yeah, but in the past hiring people has been problematic. It is very tough to find skilled craftsmen who take the pride Scotty takes in his work. I can't believe I am going to say this....I would rather wait a tiny bit longer and know it is being done correctly than get it home (across the country) and find out there is a problem.
Are you considering non-914 colors?
Or how about other Porsche colors?
I loved my Oslo Blue 356...
-Steve
Hi Steve- I would love to consider non '71 Six colors but I think that will cause the seas to part and all Hell to break loose. I like gray and I also like the early 356 blue/gray color. The 356 color would be my first choice actually as I have always loved it. But blasphemy right?
If you're changing colors anyway, do whatever color you like! 356 grey colors are very nice.
Well. If that's the case, Irish Green.
Irish Green is an original '71 Six color.
Ok enough Jake bashing, LOL, I don't wear Khakis! Jake was my boy cat that passed away in 2004. He would have agreed with the no gold color too. He had excellent taste.
I too have a 2010 997.2 4S in Meteor Grey (my first Porsche) thanks to my twin brother for locating it in Los Angeles.
OK, might as well get this out of the way....we are identical twins and we each have a '10 C4S coupe in Meteor Gray/black. The only difference is mine is a 6 speed and his is a PDK.
Apparently twins have the same (excellent) taste in cars.
Nope. But he likes my Six.
> If you're changing colors anyway, do whatever color you like! 356 grey colors are very nice.
I agree!
-Steve
Hi Steve - I do not believe I could paint it other than a '71 factory Six color. I am already outside of the box by not painting it gold - I think I at least must stay on the field.
If I do another 914 it will be that 356 color though.... in my next lifetime.
Have always thought 356/911 Slate Gray would be stunning on a 914 with all of the factory brightwork, black top and targa bar, and Euro lenses front and rear.
Almost went that way on my car, but could not bring myself (or my wallet) to do a complete color change...
pete
I know Michael isn't doing grey. Especially since he already has a grey Porsche.
True.
Some good non-metallic dark blues from the period, also...
Have only ever seen one narrow 914-6 in dark blue, and it was stunning. Irish Green is, too, but is pretty common.
Attached image(s)
That is not the color I was thinking of. I like the blue- grey color. I don't know what it is called.
Aquamarine Blue
Attached image(s)
Yup - That is the blue/gray I like a lot.
That blue grey would be gorgeous on a 914
Just a minor shade change from adriatic, a 914 color. On the subject of gold, there is a 911 gold which is less yellowish, more bronze-like. I can post a pic. Who's to say it isn't original?
Pretty color.
beautiful color.
Saw your car last week when I stopped in to check on my '72 911T and pick up my 2.4 MFI to take to the engine rebuilder.
Your car is looking very good! I don't know how far the car is from paint (I don't pretend to know body work); however, the sheet metal looked very nice. You can't be far now!
Hello Bill - Thanks for the update- I truly appreciate it and the kind words. Scotty does great work. That is the reason my car is still not in color!
This is the problem when people realize someone has mad skills- they are swamped with work all of the time. In the end I know my car is going to be terrific. It is the wait that kills me.
Solved..

What did I miss?
Nothing -seriously.
Car is finally out of paint Not sure of the cheap ass body kit
You let the cat out of the bag! Now I have to pick another gold color.....

Love that color blue.
Can we get back to the build thread? Any updates from Scotty?
Scotty - the phone is ringing......
Nice. I know Scotty is taking care of some of the upholstery stuff. I believe he just got the dash, top targa bar pad and windshield top pad back from Just Dashes too. I am hoping to see photos of that stuff. They are a bit expensive, so my hope is they are perfect.
I'll first say that NO Michael has nothing to do with the delays on his car. I am dealing with almost 2 years of health and employee issues. Along with that is constantly dealing with the parts we are subbing out while I get caught up on other work. Thus far we have had issues with the chrome shop which has forced me to go with someone out of state. Issues with the powder coater, I have a new one I am trying out now. My upholstery guy is one of the best in the country and stays booked up so getting in with him is always a challenge etc. Michael has been VERY patient while I take care of there things, and I promise it will all pay off in the end.
I took down one of my parts dashes to compare the JUST DASHES grain to.

I've also managed to get in some body work on the hood and trunk lids. They are now pretty damn straight and ready for the rest of the body to catch up
you'll notice that while the hood and trunk lid look straight in bare metal, they actually had a lot of rippling as I have found all do. It's hard to tell in the pics, but the low's are all around the bracing on the underside. EVERY 914 I have long blocked came out just like this.

Yay! Wow, that dash looks amazing. I hope it looks that good when I see it in person. Just Dashes was not inexpensive, but it does seem they know what they are doing.
We are moving along and one step closer to color. I love seeing the panels in guide coat as I know that means we are close to final bodywork.
I have been checking with some paint suppliers south of the border to see if I can find the right metal flake gold. It is not easy to find that large metal flake paint. If I can't find it, I may have to change my plan alltogether...
how do I break it to Scotty? He is really committed to gold.....
Good progress...and more eveidence that once Scotty is done with a car, it's better than when it left Germany
BTW no need to tease me with that MB hood orniment, I will always miss that car.
We needed a hood emblem, the MBZ emblem is as good as any, right?
Scotty? Have you already sent the powder coating out? If not, this might be worth a shot. Thanks Hot_Shoe914
It's been a while since we updated this build, so.... we have got the upholstery lined up (thanks for the referral Scotty) and David Wells has ordered all of the material. We are going with black leather in a texture that closely matches the original vinyl. We will recover the seats, door cards, back pad and center deposit box. Then when the time comes for carpets, David will get the car to make and install the carpet.
I also checked with Harvey Weidman and he tells me my 5 deep sixes will be done at the end of next week. As a reminder, I have a date matched set and he is widening 4 of them 1" on the back side, to 7". From the front they will look like factory deep sixes but I will have a tiny bit more rubber on them, just because. I did 4 instead of 5 because we couldn't get a space saver spare to mount on a 7" rim, which will mount vertically against the bulkhead. So we left the designated spare rim the factory width. I wanted to be able to rotate all 4 tires and would not use the spare in that rotation anyway. They will be finished like stock.
I had the opportunity to talk to Scotty the other day and my project will me moving along again. We should be seeing the metal work completed, 1 day of work at most left, and then in primer and blocked by the end of March. Shooting for color in May and then assembly will begin. My Six should be back in my garage before the end of the year - 2017.
I recently asked Harvey Weidman to ship one of my 1" widened deep sixes to Scotty (pre-finish) so Scotty could set the raised spindle height and weld the struts and have them powder coated so once the car is assembled, we will not have any fitment issues re the wheels and lowering. The wheel will now be returned to Harvey for completion. Here are some pictures Scotty sent me of my unfinished widened deep six for test fitment:

That wheel will look awesome!!!
Thanks Bill. Yeah I think they will look good. I am having them finished stock. Although recently I have been looking at the RSR finish and scratching my head.....
Remember, this is how they started:
Just read this 5 year thread from beginning to end. Michael you my friend have the most patience I have ever seen. But I guess perfection is worth the wait.......
Hope our 914-6s can meet someday...
We never hear from Scotty anymore. I hope all is well w/him. Has he had some issues w/his back and had to take time off or did you guy's run into other problems? I'm sure this six is going to be spectacular when it is finished. Anticipation
I saw him not too long ago and he said he's just been really busy working on cars.
Back, lack of a good full time helper at the shop, other stuff...
Not on here much because he's got tons of other stuff and work taking up his time.
If anyone knows a good person in the paint/bodywork trade, send them Scotty's way. If he had 2 people with his detail eye it would be able to work on as many projects as there are people who want him working on their projects.
Thanks guys. Yeah, Scotty has been busy. That's just what happens. Hopefully we are now back on track and will hit the 2017 completion target.
Man, I really like the RSR finish, but I want the car to look stock, especially since it is remaining narrow bodied. What do you guys think about the RSR finish on an otherwise essentially stock bodied Six? My wife actually just voted for the RSR finish......
OK -noodled it through, the wheels will remain the stock factory finish.
Yes, there have been a couple years of health and employee issues, but as of right now the backlog of work is almost done ( except for one small job ) I am looking to have 2 big resto jobs that came in around the same time as Michaels car gone by the end of April and will be back on Michaels car pretty heavy.
As we started with, stripped and polished to go to the platers, and the pile after it came back, then 5 hours later of sorting

Harvey sent one of the wheels out so I could test fit the spindles for a 19mm drop. Without actually having it on the car and full weight on the suspension I am concerned enough about clearance I am dropping two sets. One at 17 and one at 19. This way when everything is together and on the ground, if the 19's don't clear well, I can just swap out for the 17mm struts.

Not sure if I posted this before or not, but we now have button

Thanks for the update and thanks for posting Scotty. Hope all is well... you and your posts are missed around here.
Looks great!
Scotty - how much work do you do on the parts before they go to the platers?
Good to see all is well Scotty. I hope it stays that way for you !!!!
What is going on with the wheels?
The Stock finish...got that.
What sizes are you using?
Rich
Very cool/trick wheels. Is that R offset or even more than that?
Custom wheel offsets are very neat to have a stock look with more tire!
Thanks a lot Scotty for taking the time to post these update photos. I appreciate it.
Also, those are factory deep six wheels. The front of the rim remains stock. The 1" widening was done on the rear of the wheel to keep the stock look on the front. They will now all be anodized like stock to keep the illusion of a mostly stock appearance.
I had to have the hockey puck horn for my steering wheel. It just looks so cool. Again, I deviated from stock, but just a smidge.
....in a very good/tasteful way
Dear God....
I guess I better get to it.

These last few posts having me starting to wish I was more organized when I disassembled my project... I've got crap everywhere in my garage and above it.
You been hanging with the Doc too much Scooter...
I'm pretty good at labeling and bagging parts, wish I had spent more time labeling wires/connectors.
That's a couple parts you got there.......
memory weekend Bump
Thanks for the bump....I miss my car. I am hoping to see major progress pics soon as Scotty promised me all metal and body work finished, blocked and primed by June. I can't wait to see the pics!
Any updates?
Hi Bill - I have not spoken with Scott for a couple months. He assured me that come June my car would be all metal work completed and blocked and primed, ready for paint. I am out of the country until Monday, but plan on speaking with Scott shortly thereafter. I am seriously hoping for some terrific new. Thanks for checking in with me and my car.
Bump to see if there's an update. Just curious!
Nothing new for now.
You have the patience of a Saint, can't believe your car is still not in paint
Hmmmm.... Saint Cairo.... has a nice ring to it. I could use my real name, Michael, but I think we may have a Saint Michael already But, thanks for checking on my build.
OK - So this will mark the end of this thread. I picked my Six up along with almost all of my parts on Saturday, July 22, 2017, from Scotty's shop. I have to do a full inventory and provide Scotty the list of missing items, (should not be a lot) and he will locate and ship those.
So, please keep your eyes open for the new thread, CAIRO's SIX, Part Two, The Road to Completion. PS - Here is the new thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=313869
Thanks for tuning in and have a great day.
