Is there information on this elsewhere, couldn't find any, like cost, how to register.
Tried a search couldn't find anything but for past years. But I am search challenged.

I drove my car 500 miles last weekend it should make it to Utah. driving.gif

Thanks

Reservation made ... get with it you pikers!!! angry.gif

Am looking at a second run .... Beaver to Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park .... 176 miles total ...
Lunch at the Hungry Coyote ... best ribs anywhere

Problems:

1.) Anybody younger than me has to pay $25 for entrance into the Nat'l Park

2.) Return route is same as the way in.

Oh well ... gonna stare some more at Google Earth.

Hey Jeff, we're not organized enough yet to determine fees other than t-shirt cost ($25 which is separate - see t-shirt ordering thread or talk to Ferg to tell him what size you want). Lunch tabs will likely be taken care of by each individual at lunch. If we end up doing a dinner that is a flat amount for the group, I'll collect money at RRC.

Just tell me you're attending - that's your registration. beerchug.gif

Thanks for the info, might try and make it. Been wanting to drive the 914 to Albuquerque to visit the Grandkids, could make this a stop on the way or way back.

Back to the top .... if for no other reason than to irritate the World members.

How could you possibly miss an event where the world's largest ice cream cones are right across the street from the hotel?

How could you pass up a pool that actually has water in it?

How 'bout a hotel that doesn't lock the front door at 7 PM?

An Erc ... you'll love this place. Front desk clerk is named Jasmine .... whoooyaaa!

Scott, don't forget you must dress appropriately, ie period correct. A group from the Shelby American collection went a few years back and had a fantastic time. They ran several european vintage races, which are not gentleman races. They are balls to the wall but with old expensive cars. Joe, who helped me with Mustang project was on the pit crew at the Spa race.

Make your reservations. Order a "T" shirt. Drive into Beaver. Like most Red Rocks Classics, getting there is half the fun. Spectacular scenery. I might bring my mountain bike. That should be good for a few laughs.

Posted by: MoveQik Jul 7 2012, 11:14 PM

Are we there yet? I need my 914 fix and the weather here sucks. I need some Beaver.

Posted by: SharonG Jul 9 2012, 01:22 PM

If you have Netflix, watch season 6, episode 9, of "How I Met Your Mother" for a beaver-related episode. It has a catchy beaver song and everything. The episode title is "Glitter". beerchug.gif

Posted by: SLITS Jul 9 2012, 03:08 PM

Since we may not have "giveaways or prizes" this year (I'm tired of asking for freebies), I have proposed a food fight at the awards dinner much as seen in "Blazing Saddles" ... pies, mashed potatoes, butter, frijoles ...

And at the mention of fijoles, I would heartily endorse a bean eating episode around a campfire. That should please the Vegan Elleyot. We can have Mongo as a guest of honor. Matches are optional.

I'd be happier if beaver were taken off the map completely. Pretty sure that speed trap exists just so the stromberg.gif hole cops that work there have a place to run amuck. sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif

I have made the drive from between So Cal and SLC at least 15 times. Only place I have ever had a problem with cops was Beaver. They will pull you over for doing 73 on I-15 in the middle of nowhere, and they will make it a mandatory court appearance even if you live out of state and tack on warrants and tons of fines if you don't show. Try calling them to sort it out and the only person that can help you is the judge (the only one they have) but he can never take your call as he is always in court.

bunch of sheeplove.gif ing a-holes
anyways *rant off*

The drive itself sounds nice though, just realize what you are getting into down there. who knows, maybe its gotten better since the last time i made the drive.

Sharon has suggested a new drive. It's about 130 miles RT. Route is Beaver via I-15 Parowan out 143 thru Brian Head to Panguitch up 89 to 20 back to I-15 up to Beaver.

IPB Image

Elevation change is from 6800' up to 10,900'. Via "Google Earth Street View" it looks pretty good unless there is snow/ice. I'm sure we can find an appropriately expensive lunch stop in Brian Head for Wills and vegan fair for Elleyot.

Comments?

Posted by: ejm Jul 21 2012, 10:32 AM

I drove Rt 143 from Parowan to Panguitch in mid September a few years ago and there had been a dusting of snow overnight. I think that could happen any of the roads that cross the mountains between 15 and 89. A nice stop on the way would be http://www.nps.gov/cebr/index.htm (grayed area below #3 on the map) Scenery similar to Bryce, entry is $4 person.

I've driven the stretch from Brian Head to Panguich many times. Great scenery and lots of open curves that would be great for a 914 run. The scenery at Brian Head & Cedar Breaks is great. I've never driven from Parowan to Brian Head, but it looks like it would be a great drive. The drive from Brian Head to Cedar City is almost vertical because it covers so much altitude change in short a short distance, but the distance from Parowan to Brian Head should spread out the elevation change enough to make it a great run with lots of twisties thrown in.

lol-2.gif Classic lol-2.gif . Red rocks is a whole different ballgame. I am really looking forward to the trip. Not sure if I am driving the LE out myself. Or bringing the family & towing it. My family would just hang out in SLC with inlaws. Then I would drive out from there. Kinda liking that idea as I get some a/c that way evilgrin.gif .

My other problem is I am in Scottsdale the next week. I either make a really round trip out of it. Drive straight from Beaver down. Then out to CA & north home. Which makes for one hell of a long drive. Or I drive back home after Red Rocks & fly out. I guess I could drive back to SLC. Then fly down from there. Then fly back to SLC & drive home idea.gif Decisions headbang.gif

Next week would be too soon, got my new motor in yesterday, installing the microsquirt today and hopefully startup. I'll need every day left to get this done in time to drive it to Utah.

Jeff

There's 24 hrs in a day. smash.gif

I think I might need them all, start up didn't happen today but there's still hope. smile.gif

Jeff

You can do it Jeff! I did my -6 conversion last summer and I literally 'finished' it the night before leaving for the RRC2011. I got the clutch hooked up, adjusted (after some trouble), drove it for the first time around the block a couple of times. Hooked it up for a flat tow of 700 some miles and broke it in at 11,000 ft in Ouray, CO.
It can be done.

The guest room will be occupied by the head mechanic. We have a pull out sofa in the theater room and this...

Sleeps 8 as couples or 4 individuals:

Sandy just booked her flight today into Denver arriving Thursday AM. I'm picking her up at the airport. We are tenitively heading for Mike and Mary Moorman's new place in Durango if everthing is right with the car and the weather. If I would have seen this earlier we may have change our plans. She could have just as easily flown into SLC.

Looks like I'll be leaving sometime Thursday from the Sacramento Ca area, probably drive to Vegas thursday then head out Friday morning to Beaver.

Doesn't seem like anyone from my area is going to caravan with, maybe I could meet up with the group leaving vegas Friday morning.

Sunday when I leave I'm going to Albuquerque for a few days then back home with probably a layover in flagstaff.

But this is all assuming my car gets finished by Thursday.
Jason (az914) thanks for the encouragement, cars is about done, just need to finish up the engine now, hopefully should be done by Monday and on the road for tuning, and new tires.

Word of Caution: A crusty elder may think it entertaining to tempt fate with the local Andy & Barney. I SERIOUSLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS.

These guys are "Well known throughout the State" for their law enforcement tactics. Lifted trucks get pulled over. Tinted windows get pulled over. Tires outside fender limits. Signs or stickers in windows obstructing your view.

You may put Beaver on the map but Beaver may, in turn, put you on the pine. Think about it.

Dead serious.

Well I hate to say it....but I give up. Doesn't look like I'm going to make it.
Couldn't get the new engine going, so I pulled it yesterday and started working on putting the old running motor back in so I could still make the trip. Decided to do a vavle adjustment while it was out, first valve I went to adjust....looked kinda funny headbang.gif spring is resting against the rocker arm, I guess the keeper failed, but it seems to still be there, but the valve stem is barely sticking out past the valve spring cap. Today was my last chance to get it going, have to work Monday-Wednesday to finish the job I'm working on now....so I guess thats it, I'm out of time and engines.

Maybe next year, Brant I guess you'll have to mail my shirt, I'll PM my address.

I wouldn't mind changing my oil. You know who sell Brad Penn 20/50? and who would have a Mann filter for a 1980 928 enigne?

The good side is I am getting 21-22 mpg on the highway, the down side is the leaner setting is not in town friendly. I think I may drop the anti freeze and run straight water. That is supposed to help with cooling. I also need to add an oil cooler. I ave most of the parts I need now. Just need the time.

BTW: when my FI was wacked I was getting 10 mpg. I was litterly cooling the engine with fuel. screwy.gif

Ya, Sandy just sent me an update on her arrival. 9:21 But hey! the flight could arive early!

220 oil temp isn't too bad
I think boiling point is 212 so you are really optimum at 220

above 235-240 is scary though...
but your oil should still be ok at 220

I'd be worried about running straight water up at these altitudes. I bet you know this Rick but while plain water has a higher heat capacity than the water+coolant mixture, it also has a lower boiling point than the mixture - combine that with the fact that you're going to be at altitude, lowering the BP even further and you have a recipe for disaster methinks. blink.gif

idea.gif Ya, idea.gif Just have to keep it rolling I guess or fatten the mixture a little.

Rick ... when you check in, my 2.7 runs 210 - 220 almost constantly. I saw 240 running thru the desert on the way to Ouray. As long as my oil pressure stayed steady I didn't panic but I wasn't happy with the 240 oil temp.

Ya, I hear ya Ron. The issue I'm seeing is now my oil pressure gauge is jumping all over the place. I run at 150psi to around 90 psi when the oil is hot at idle. Now when I'm cruising down the freeway the gauge is bouncing from 150 as low as 30 psi. I either cooked the oil and killed the viscosity enhancers or I have an electrical issue. If the oil is foaming when hot now it would maybe act like air getting into the system.

I'm leaning tword the electrical issue but I located a Mann filter and some 20/50 Brad Penn here in Denver just incase. The reason I am leaning tword the electrical is I drove the car last night 230 miles with the gauge bouncing. I would think if it were a mechanical issue the engine would be dead no.

I was at 220 but never lost any fluid. As long as the pressure doesn't lift the cap I'm good. I don't know the relationship between water temp and oil temp but when I left the car in Lincoln because the gauge went wacky I had the oil tested. I had been running Castrol GTX 20/50. Test came back showing the viscosity was around 20W and pan had black flecks of carbon in it. Cooked oil. So if water is 220 oil may be hotter?

Posted by: SLITS Sep 5 2012, 04:54 PM

As my memory is shot, I thought the water temp was 10 - 20 degrees cooler than the oil temp. That's what I remember from the racing days.

I agree with the electrical issue if it's jumping around.

Rick, I doubt you burned your oil at 220F. The break down point of automotive engine oil seems to be in the range of 300-370 degrees (Centigrade). 300 degrees C = 572 degrees F.

Unless it's time for an oil change, save yourself some time & money confused24.gif

Sandy, Ut just south of SLC. Maybe Eric will chime in here and give you some info.

1 hour 45 mins to departure ... I'm gonna fry in the desert. Fortunately I have a bottle of AntiFreeze (Cassadores) with me.

Oh, if anyone has a spare clutch trunnion & two 11 mm nuts bring them along. I'm bringing spare cables in case someone needs one, but the trunnion gets lost on the road a lot of times when it breaks. Also have spare /4 & /6 throttle cables, spare /4 & /6 CIS fuel pumps & couple of lengths of 3/8" & 5/16" fuel hose.

Spare 2.7L six and 2.0L four with transmission wouldn't fit in the trunk.

Ron,

Here's a cheap air conditioner:

Get a cheap styrofoam ice chest, poke a 2" hole at each end of in the lid.

Install a section of 2" PVC pipe in one of the holes, down to about 2" above the bottom of the chest.

Install a small 12 volt fan over the hole that has the PVC tube (blowing down into the chest).

Fill the chest with ice (duh), and plug the fan into the cigarette lighter socket.

Ambient air will sicked into the chest, under the ice, and come out the other hole as cooled air beerchug.gif
