914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914/6 dipsticks who needs them?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jul 9 2012, 10:19 AM

I had a member ask about making these. Aparently they break. I'm looking at doing up a batch of these if there is some level of interest. My guess is $25-$35. really depends on how many are needed. I don't see this being a high volume part, but if there is enough demand pricing can improve.

let me know if you want one.

I'm in for one.

Posted by: Mountain914 Jul 9 2012, 11:19 AM

Absolutely ! beerchug.gif

Let me also add that if you have the factory unit, like above, yours *will* break over time.
The reproduction units offered by others don't look anything like these, they have a square-bent handle and a straight stick.

Posted by: smj Jul 9 2012, 11:32 AM

Sigh... that looks nothing like the dipstick that came with my -6. Yet another PO improvement, I guess. dry.gif

If I've got the cash, I'll buy one. Just been spending a lot on the car, and now have to plan for replacing the halfshafts... (Money for WAS top is set aside.)

Well,
There is enough interest to do these. So, I'm proceeding. I'll have the costs and time line on these figured out in the next few days.

Posted by: dem Jul 11 2012, 06:22 AM

I'm interested. Are they improved in some way (stainless, don't break in half, etc.)?

Thanks Mark.

BTW, someone once told me a story of pulling an oil tank only to find three dipsticks inside. I guess the PO couldn't find the little hole to put it in. happy11.gif

agree.gif do they break as a result of improper use, or is there a " weak point ? I've seen a few with suface rust but never a brokwn one. May be the stainless suggestion is the way to go. confused24.gif

These are still in the works. The method of manufacture is more complicated than just cutting strips and forming these. I've had to source material that was not off the shelf and do some additional fabrication to just get the blanks. These will also have to be heat treated. If I'm going to make these, I'm going to do them right. It is however taking more time to go through the process than planned.

I'm making these as close to OEM as possible, as they are for a 6 I think it will be more apealing to be as close to OEM as possible. I hopefully have located a material that the alloy will hold up a little better.

Were these ever done?

Funny,
I have them cut, just haven't formed them. Dooh. I located the proper alloy spring steel with the correct thickness. Even got as far as notching the ends.

I'll get back on these. I literally lost track of everything I was doing at one time. I now have a production journal to keep all the balls in the air.

Mark- best I could do. This is the dip stick out of my 1970 6. It's from a stock 1970 tank. Note: 1st bend is in the opposite direction of the next 3, unlike your prototype. There is no max/min line, only 1 line w/ a dimple in the middle of it @ 3 & 19/32", or 9.05cm, from the bottom of the stick. Used a 2 sided desk ruler for U.S. spec & Metric references.

I have these formed up, we ar putting the clips on them now. The mark is measuerd off the top (as the clip stops the dipstick) , so we needed to do it 1st. Should be in finishing in about a week. I'll post some pictures later in the week.

Actually,
Just finished the clips to bind these and got them all done. Now the loops are fixed I can start marking off the level marks. Then hardening and plating.
I thought this wold be much easier.

I got my dipstick a few days ago in the mail. It looks great. I got around to installing tonight and it seems to have problem. I cannot get it to insert into the tube correct so that the filler cap can be screwed on. the first pic shows the dipstick that I am currently using on the left (911 version not long enough) and the new one from Mark on the right. You can see that the new one doesn't have the same clearance on the "stop" as the other one so it is preventing it from engaging the tube that it goes down. The next two pics show the new dipstick and how it will not slip all the way into the tube and allow the filler cap to screw on..it appears to be too long overall. My current stick does slide all the way into the tube allowing for the filler cap to spin on. I hope this makes sense. I am using a Factory tank and filler neck. Let me know if you are finding the same issue with yours.

I'll add pictures when I get them off the camera later, but I just went and checked the dipstick I received the other week on the 914-6 and it fits fine. When inserted, I can put the oil filler neck cap on with no problem.

Now it's possible this factory -6 has been modified in this area - I have no idea where the current dipstick is from, and the car's certainly been "messed with" elsewhere - but for what it's worth...

Posted by: SLITS Jul 31 2014, 03:44 PM

I bought two and they both fit stock tanks just fine.

The 914/6 is about 1 1/2" longer than the 911.

Can I still get in on this for one dipstick ?? PM sent

SLITS/Mark, I just went out into the garage and tried to fit the new diptick again to be sure I wasn't missing something. Check out my 2 pics.

Pic 1 - 2 dipsticks...the new one on the top from Mark is almost 13 5/8" long and the other one on the bottom which I believe is an early model 911 type is 11 7/8" long. I am running a stock tank in my conversion and I believe stock oil filter console and filler neck.

Pic 2 - All filler neck and console pieces that I snapped before installing the tank. Do you think it's possible that my filler neck isn't a 914/6 type and that is what is causing the problem? This one is stumping me unless the new stick is just a little too long. Johnny Blackstains post earleir in this thread looks as if the stock dispstick is 13 1/4" long vs. what the new one measures at almost 13 5/8".

Hi,
Hows about the angle of the fille neck? Looks like it´s not at the right angle.
Maybe you didn´t match the hole in the oilfoam Screen and the new one ist hitting the Screen?

This is how mine Looks.

If you are looking for the dipstick, go to www.914rubber.com and order it thru Mark's website.

If you are looking for an NOS or USED oil tank ($$$$) go to eBay ... there were a couple there.

And Mr. Cheney, I agree with michelko ... it looks like your oil filler is not vertical but turned to the side. This is what I ran into when installing a 911 filler neck into a 914/6 tank and why I rotated the filler neck assembly which bends the dipstick tube in the filler neck to a different angle. Maybe with the angle you have, the dipstick is hitting the side of the tank.

I took another look at this today and found success. I saw what SLITS mentioned about the filler tube and screen inside the tank so I removed the filler neck, rotated it slightly and pushed down slightly on the dipstick after inserting it and it slid in with ease piratenanner.gif Thanks for all the input guys.
