Any good reason not to switch over to a 2 outlet fuel pump?? NAPA has one for only $100 or so. What the function of the 3 rd port on the original fuel pump??

NAPA has them for < $50. Do a search here. IRRC, it's a Ford pump.

The third fitting on the stock 70-74 pump is to dump excess fuel back into the return line. I don't think it's really needed, myself--the fuel pressure regulator appears more than capable enough of dealing with all of the fuel that needs to go back to the tank.

As long as the pressure and volume are reasonable, the less expensive pump should work fine. You may have to do some Adaptor Majik ™ to plumb it.
