All,

I introduced myself in a previous thread, and have been searching the forums for various topics, and have seen a couple of threads related to the events and members in the greater Cincinnati area, which is where I'm located.

I'd be interested in knowing who's around me with the same addiction. beerchug.gif

I plan to do much of my own work, but sometimes I may not be able to, or need some mentoring as it were. So getting to know folks locally would be great.

Also if there are businesses that are fluent in 914's, that would be really comforting if I get in way over my head. (plus I'm gonna need a paint job someday, and knowing who to use locally would be nice.)

So if your in or around Cincinnati, let me know, I'm actually in Liberty Twp, near West Chester, and hopefully you may actually see my car on the road in the weeks to come. driving.gif

Yeah,
Van has been around these cars a while and has a plethora of knowledge.

The closest we have to a local gathering is Hershey and Garolds get together near Chicago. Both of which just past. Bigkensteele is another who is around and I'm sure he'll post sooner or later.

Hello Turk22,

I'm down the river in Louisville. If you organize something, let me know. I have a '70 1.7 which I've owned for a long time, it is currently in the default 914 state (disassembled and on jack stands). I hope to have it back together within the next 6 - 8 months.

Another member in the Cinti area is Bigkensteele who posts from time to time.

Turk,

1st: welcome.png

2nd:I'm located in Miami Township, Clermont County, just outside Loveland.

3rd: Somehow, someway, sometime the greater Cinti/NKy 914 people need to get together for a casual get together, be it a gathering at a restaurant, coffee shop or a local park.

I live on the east side of Cincinnati just outside I275 off 125 Beachmont Ave. Like all 914 owners have large collection on parts and books. Just finishing a total rebuild of 2056 its running but not on the road yet. (Im looking for help with final tuning.) We need to meet for coffe/beer lot of 914 people in the area.

Turk welcome to 914 World.

I live across the river in the Florence KY area. My 914 (like most) is a project in waiting as I haven't yet started working it. I picked it up in 2003 as a roller from Ca and just stored until I was done with other projects. I have had 914s since about 1990 but all have been projects/parts cars. As far as other local cars, I have seen an orange/tangerine 914 pass the house a few times this summer. I am also aware of a silver 914 project in my area which belongs to a fellow member. Oh, I almost forgot, my dad has a silver '75 1.8 that he kept roadworthy (but unlicensed) until a fuel issue sidelined it over the winter.

We did attempt to have a 914 picnic in BigBone State Park about 10 years ago. We can put something similar together if anyone is interested. There were only a small mumber of 914s that showed but we did have some other P-cars for that gathering.

The Cincinnati VW club is having their VW-Porsche reunion show in September. The VW Club site listss the show dates as the 29th and 30th. Sept 29th is the pre-show at Metalkraft and Sept 30th is the actual show at GE Park. http://www.cincyvwclub.com/Reunion.aspx

I'm in Cincinnati in the Clifton area near UC.

My 914 is in a state of restoration as seems to be the case with many 914 owners. I'm not an expert but I am not afraid to get my hands dirty so if you ever need an extra set of hands working on your car, hit me up.

I'd also be interested in meeting up with other 914 owners from around the area. A local gathering would be awesome. I would like to see other peoples cars as 914s are something you don't see everyday. As a matter of fact I have never seen a 914 on the road here in Cincy besides mine. Have seen a couple parked that were for sale but that was it. Didn't think there were that many around here until I got on this site.

I play golf at GE Park every Thursday in a league, it would be a great site to have a little get together, plenty of parking, picnic areas and/or clubhouse, its really close to I275, and I'm a member, so I can reserve something....

After checking that VW Porsche show out, I'm thinking I'll come down for the show in September myself. Maybe we should do a 914 invasion of it?

I suspect that if we had a gathering at a venue called "Big Bone Lick" State Park, all those left coasters with their rustless 914s would trip all over themselves trying to get here....

Posted by: Van914 Aug 16 2012, 12:49 PM

We have been there and done that about 10 years ago. About 10 people showed up.
If I remember about 4 914's

Posted by: kafermeister Aug 16 2012, 09:07 PM

That was a good time Van and it was good to meet some local 914 folks.

I remember your 914 was there. Al's green 914 was there. There was a black/yellow LE which I believe the owner still has (saw him at the VW Porsche reunion a year or two back) and there was a 72(?) 914 running project that was later sold to someone north east of Ohio. Rob from Lexington drove up with his beautiful blue 914. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody.

Funny thing about the LE is that it used to belong to a fella named Jack who drove a 911 to the picnic. I don't believe he knew it was his car until he started talking to the current owner.

I remember getting e-mail from folks wanting to know if the proposed picnic was a joke. Big Bone Lick State Park is on Beaver Road. True story, you just can't make this stuff up.

I was/am hoping to have my starter issues resolved by then, but either way, I would be interested. If nothing else I can have you guys teach me how to trace the problem. (you just may have to push me to start my car to get me home icon_bump.gif (start)

The GE Park place is 15 minutes away from my house, so meeting there would be great, if we do a different weekend, I can certainly reserve a picnic area at the park for all of us.

Yeah! It actually has the running engine sitting in it! Along with the floor now! Slowly but surely! Only thing missing for motion is the axles... That's because I'm pulling the engine after I get the exhaust mocked up... looks funny without a firewall though! Hehe

I REALLY wanted to go to mine, and she REALLY wanted to go to hers, so we did. More like 2:00 to GE park, but who's counting? That can be a long trip in a 40 year old car.

I am only 35 - 45 minutes away, and I am still a bit nervous, given my car's love for flatbeds. I am going to put her up on the stands this weekend for a once-over before I make the drive. She has not proven to be road-trip worthy since I brought her out of a multi-year hibernation. But still looking forward to meeting you guys.

Is everyone planning on registering, or just parking. I wonder if they will let us park together? I have only been to this even once, probably 8 years ago. It is entirely possible that we could all be there and never have occasion to meet. We might want to think of some way to organize on our own, rather than trust luck. Maybe meet at an agreed area at a particular time or something like that. Any ideas???

Posted by: Nürburg Nomad Sep 17 2012, 09:09 PM

Hey fellow teeners! Glad I jumped back on the forum this past month... along with renewed momentum in completing 914 projects! I'll certainly be at the VW Porsche reunion this year, I've attended the past 3 years (once with the 914, twice with VWs) and it's certainly worthwhile, a lot of VW's and a fair amount of Porsche's that you don't see come out at other events are present!

Who's seen my thread for the upcoming Rallye Porsche Mariemont gathering? I was proposing a casual 914 cruise-in post Rallye drive the day prior on Oct 6th. The all-Porsche show will be on the closed off main streets and roundabout of historic Mariemont this October 7th!

Closer to Louisville? It's only 1:30 away from you! smile.gif

I was going to register, and was planning to drive down the night before and camp out. I think the guys doing this are pretty cool, I'll see if I cant get them to set aside a bit of 914 real estate if I can give them a number, sounds like in the 4-5 range?

Everyone be sure to attend the free open house at Mark's Metalkraft Coachwerks the afternoon before the show on the 30th @ 4-7pm on Sept. 29th. Always lots of cool vintage VWs, Porsches, Bentleys, Lamborghinis etc. being restored + tasty food provided in years past... an unexpected treat in a building that could be mistaken for an old empty factory from the outside.

I agree - Mark puts on a nice little party. Not sure if I can make it, but he is up there with Scotty and a couple others here in his talents. Last time I was there, he had a Ferrari 512BB, a Lamborghini Muira SV, a couple of 911s, a 914, 3 or 4 356s, and a couple of VWs in the shop. Definitely worth the visit.

Thanks, she stranded me for a bit Saturday night, but I was able to get her running without having a tow. Had trouble starting her, so I kept cranking, then the battery connector MELTED!. Autozone was 2 blocks away, so a new $3 connector and she fired right up.
I'm signing up for AAA+ (100 mile towing) before I take any long trips.

I was only teasing, It was four years after buying my 914 before I took it more thn an hour from home! Congrats on your new ownership! I would love to have a get together down there too, but due to school schedules it might have to wait till spring for me.

Good Call! I signed up for the premium just for the 200 mile tow (and used it last year after catastrophic engine failure during a road trip!)

Guys,

I'm gonna just be a spectator, but it would be great if we could arrange a meeting place/time so that we don't miss each other.

I'm assuming the get together will be in the front part of the park (the back side is the golf course). There is a little guard shack that we could all try migrate to at some appointed time.

Hoping we can pull off parking the teeners next to each other. Think it would be cool.

Gates open for spectators at 9:30, but I may not be there til 10:30 or 11 am. If anyone has attended the thing in years past, may have a better idea of where to meet up.

Yes, it's held in the front of the park... I wasn't even aware a golf course was there! Though perhaps we can move the show there and watch the Baja Bugs jump in and out of the sand traps! first.gif

Last year the show was held in the field immediately to the right of the main drive when you first come in, and the two years previous it was in the wooded picnic area to the left of the main drive, which I personally prefer. I imagine it will be pretty easy to meet up if people are driving their 914s. A lot of the VW Bus guys always find a way to park together so if the first of us to arrive mentions how many more 914s are coming (once we have a better # closer to the date) then we should be good!

I was hoping that with a nice weather forecast on Sunday that I'd drive the 914 out to GE Park for the "Reunion".

Then I get home tonight and the contractor had left 2000 lbs of cut stone and cast concrete on the driveway.......in front of the garage door......the garage door that the 914 is behind hissyfit.gif

So now wifey sez "You can load up the Honda Element with the old 15" steel wheels, f/g rocker panels, shabby front bumper tops, old VW & PORSCHE magazines, "Excellence", model cars, etc., etc. and get them outta the house!"

"Too much work for too little return" sez I.

Maybe I'll just ride my bike over to the reunion.

If you need some help hauling stone so you can get your Teener out I can lend a hand.

Also, I have a pair of front Koni yellows, a pair of 140# progressive springs, a good rain tray, and a mint 4-lug steel wheel at low costs if anyone wants em.

No weather excuses, the forcast couldn't be better

I'd like to try and meet you all, and it will good to know who's in and who's out.

I expect to be there by 11am at the latest, hopefully earlier.

Paul, sucks you won't be able to bring the teener (I was really hoping to see it).

I'll be driving mine down, in all its untouched glory. Hoping to get some opinions to put on my winter todo list.

I'm going to attempt to make it! Have 50th Reunion in Portsmouth OH on Fri. and Sat. but will leave after the dinner and drive Cayman back home to Georgetown, KY. Then get an early start Sun. morning and drive "Dad's Mistress"(my all original 73 914!) to the Park, should be there about 9:30AM when the gates open, so save me a parking place. Its hard to miss my Dephi Green(L99A)paint!

I skipped the pre-show open house today in favor of installing a new main targa seal & a slew of other small projects! Still putting another coat of POR-15 on my Engman long kit now... So if anyone wants a look it'll be right out in the open!

Maybe I'll have an interior again this time next week? tongue.gif

agree.gif Especially given how well received your 914 was this past weekend! The list of online registrants alone has 76 people; some of whom are shown as bringing 2+ Porsches!

Time to resurrect this thread...

To all of our OH KY IN and anyone else who wants to make the drive. I am going to put something together for us to meet. So far, I know that those who have posted to this thread in the past are interested. But since then we have found others in the region.

Please post here areas that you think would make a meeting spot. I don't care if it is someone's garage, a park, eatery or such. Let's try to get a meet setup where we can have a day of food, drinks and automobile comradere!

All in favor say I!

Thomas

I'm a new(er) 914 owner from Louisville and would be up for this in the Spring. Wasnt there a meetup in the past at Big Bone Lick State Park (on Beaver Road shades.gif ) in the past? That would be great for me because I can still be inside of the AAA 100 mile towing plan. lol-2.gif

Posted by: turk22 Jan 7 2013, 02:43 PM

I !

I'm still considering an engine drop party, but that may be closer a few weeks away.

If we want to do a do something quickly I think VOA park wouldn't be to bad a place. confused24.gif

That is a great car it was in show room at Porsche dealer for couple years first.gif That is ture show car I never thought it would go up for sale??

Posted by: bigkensteele Mar 19 2013, 11:07 PM

Not sure if I know how to spell his last name correctly, but that is Bill Wooste's car. He owns the Porsche of the Village dealership. I have seen it a couple of times. It is very nice and completely original as far as I can tell. Can't imagine why he is selling it other than to make room for something else.

*** Edit - I think they did a poor job on the ebay ad. If I recall correctly, this car has a story about its originality that should be told. It might have been a lost inventory deal. I just don't remember, but this car is one of the most amazing survivors that I have ever seen.

I looked at that car when I was over there to order parts. If I didn't have a major 914 project already going, I would sure think about it! Not very often a true time capsule comes up for sale, and local to boot!

beerchug.gif They are not selling the car because he needs the $$$ they are one of the highest volume Porsche dealers in the country.

That 914 has been a showroom fixture for several years. If I had a place at home to keep second 914, I'd be looking seriously at this "survivor".

I have a feeling the reserve is such that its not going to sell anyway. They should just post a "Buy it Now" price and let the world know how much it would take to own it.

That was Mike Valentines old car... Sold to eventually make room for his Carrera GT. I can't believe it has stayed in the cinci area this long! Beautiful car! It was at our OVR PCA 50th anniversary gala.

Hope it brings good dough! Nice car!

I had never met Mike until the Mariemont event when you and I talked with him. Great guy and down to earth as they come!

Thomas,
The 914 was not Mike's car. His was a 2.8ltr six. I went to buy it but Beechomont bought it before I could. It was a Stoddard's prepped car. Beechmont repainted Silver had it a few years and sold it. It went to Fla. I saw it for sale again without the 2.8 motor. It was sold to someone in Michigan.

Good to know! Someone told me that it was his at one time when we were at POV for the 50th event. Interesting though! Such a nice car!

Hey Thomas, let me know if you will be available next saturday morning?

Posted by: dirk9141973 Mar 29 2013, 03:59 PM

first.gif Well the 1973 1.7 sold today might be a record $25,000 I was at dealer when bid ended (no big deal) but car is off to a new collector. (The car looked a little sad in a room full of cars over $100k) Someone has perfect car even the dirt is in the correct areas. But no oil leaks lol-2.gif Today

Posted by: Peashooter Mar 29 2013, 04:20 PM

Whew! 25 large ones is a lot of cash, but then that is a pretty nice car. I don't suppose it stayed in Cincy?

Im just north in Dayton, okay north of Dayton, I drive to Sharonville each day. I have 2 914s both are down and out right now. But happy to meet at the reunion.

BTW, that 962 does not have a blister in the top. Mike's was modified to fit his large frame. He needed the blister for his helmet, the pedal area was also extended. It could have been returned to factory condition, but I doubt Mike could get into it if it was.

Posted by: tscrihfield Sep 5 2013, 10:27 PM

I will see you all at the reunion.

As for modifications.... There were no modifications for Mike to drive or pilot the 962. He only owned it, and never drove it. The one time he talked about it his friends talked him out of it saying they liked him more alive.
