914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GB- CV joint bolts drilled for safety wire

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 12 2012, 07:17 PM

These are new, and drilled for safety wire. The beauty is that you don't have to replace all the bolts, so if you want piece of mind that your CV joints will not come off, you can safety wire the bolts on. This will make it much easier.

Who needs em?

I'd like a set, which is what, 8?

Do you use them on the tranny side as well?

stirthepot.gif How much are new schor lock washers?

Posted by: kg6dxn Aug 12 2012, 08:43 PM

I'm in for 8 with washers if you can get them. smile.gif

Posted by: speed metal army Aug 12 2012, 08:56 PM

Id be down! Throw the wire in there with washers!

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 12 2012, 10:11 PM

Ya, I threw in wire, washers and bolts poke.gif

Thanks for taking this on! thumb3d.gif

I'll locate the washers. The wire is cheap. I know you don't have to use a drilled on on each, so for those of us that want to just alternate you can save a few bucks. I'll round up the wire and the washers. May take a few days.

Truth is if you have the safety wire the washer really makes no difference, except on the ones that don't have it.

I'd feel better knowing ALL of mine were wired, with schnorrs underneath them too (at both, the tranny flanges and the stub axles). Cheap insurance shades.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 13 2012, 06:45 AM

Wire them all! If you wire only a few, then that is what will be left if any of them come loose. Then, those may just likely break and take the CV with them. All or nothing smile.gif

I need a full set (16). Are you drilling 2 holes or 4? I would prefer 4.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 13 2012, 09:04 PM

4 is the preferred method smile.gif

i lost the set I got from the Doc.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 13 2012, 09:25 PM

Each bolt is drilled with 2 holes, I'll have the washers figured out in another day. The wire is inbound and I'll be able to ship by Friday.

Why? If wired correctly, the orientation of the holes should not matter, no? confused24.gif

Mark, I am in for a set of 16 as well. I can send you back new 16 cores, too.

Is there any reason that used bolts can't be used as cores?

More hassle to clean up and the finish can be an issue. Easier to buy new ones at $1.60 each than mess with the old ones.

I am certainly in favor of this modification, however the two holes per bolt can be a problem.
I drilled some for myself back in 2006. Only did 1 drilling per bolt, that would be one hole on each side of the bolt 180 degrees from each other. Put them on and guess what, over half of the holes lined up to point right at the flange that holds the rubber. Spent a while trying to get lock wire thru those to do the lock wire thing and gave up. There is just not enough room to grab the end of the lock wire and pull/push it thru. So I purchased a set from Dr. Evil. They had two holes also. I haven't even bothered to try them as I figured they would be the same , not lining up for easy lock wiring. 4 holes per bolt would solve this problem.
I am going to revisit this as I have the axles off now. Maybe between mine and Dr. Evil's I will have enough that line up OK.
The other way to only drill one hole completely thru the bolt would be to make up a jig that would line up the bolt to the correct angle every time before drilling.

I'm in for 2 sets.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 9 2012, 03:04 PM

Tom, my bolts all had 4 holes.

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 9 2012, 04:09 PM

Correction, my early bolts had 2 and I switched to 4 for the same reasons mentioned above by others. Tom reminded me that he got his in 2006 or so wink.gif

Posted by: McMark Sep 9 2012, 05:32 PM

4 holes would be better. wink.gif

Posted by: kg6dxn Oct 2 2012, 07:15 PM

Is this going to happen?

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Oct 2 2012, 09:05 PM

My old set only has 2 holes, and I nevr had a problem wiring them. Push the wire with lineman pliers on one side, pull it through the other with a set of thin needle nose pliers. Never had one unable to get through.

are there bolts avail in the same size, pitch, and strength that would work with #2 or 3 square drive bits? bits are cheap, the correct tool not so much and once they spin they're doomed.

Where are we at on this group buy confused24.gif

Posted by: 76-914 Oct 19 2012, 04:29 PM

I wonder how many of us know how to correctly safety wire the bolts? And I agree w/Zach. One should be able to thread it thru. Might want to get a smaller ga. I avoid safety wire any where I can. I've pricked my fingers enough working on A/C. I do recommend the HF safety wire pliers. Aircraft Spruce keeps a few different sizes of safety wire. Reality=You can't be too careful!

Safety wire is best if used with a twist tool. There is a really good write up here

Im in for one full set with wire.

Posted by: shoguneagle Nov 7 2012, 05:59 PM

It does not matter usually if you have two or four holes in the bolt. It is important that you radius the outer sides of each drilled hole to prevent a weak spot developing in the safety wire. I am assuming that the holes are drilled to accept .032 safety wire Stainless steel type. This wire can be obtained at most aircraft suppliers.

I use 108mm CVs and am drilling the heads myself. The bolts are 10mm and I am safetying two per wire connection (total four bolts per each CV
