ROUTE CHANGE 10/18/2012
Found out Waynesville will be packed with Apple Fest attendees so we have altered the route just a bit. Meeting place is the same but lunch has changed to the Nick & Nate's Pizza in SYLVA
Here is the new route:
[*]MEETING POINT: Asheville NC at Bent Creek Baptist Church on Brevard Rd (exit 33 off I-26) There is a nice, long stretch of "parking lot" at this location
[*]Begin the Drive along the Blue Ridge Pky all the way to junction of US23/Great Smoky Mtns Expy. Take US23 approx. 10 miles to Sylva.
approx. 60 miles, 2 hours
[*]Lunch in Sylva at Nick & Nate's Pizzaria
approx. 1.5 hrs
[*]Take 107 to Cashiers then 64 to Lake Toxaway area.
approx. 40 miles, 1.25 hrs
[*]Continue on 64. North on 215/Parkway headed to Canton, NC. 215 becomes 110.
approx. 50 miles, 1.5 hours
[*]END POINT in Canton. Be safe driving home.
I plan to leave Seymour around 8:00am and meet other area teeners along the way. I will be driving 411 to Sevierville and Newport; 70/25 to Hot Springs; 209 to 63 to Asheville; and 19/23/74 to 112 to the meeting point.
If you find WCR, RRC, MUSR, ECC, TR and many other 914 events are simply too far away to attend, then chances are you live in the Southeast. If so, make plans to attend a day drive on the twisty roads southwest of Asheville, NC on October 20th. Yeah, I know this is short notice (and is same day as ECC and Petit LeMans) but this drive originally came about when dlee (from Winston-Salem area) and I (from Knoxville area) decided to meet in the mountains this fall for a day of driving. Why not invite everybody?
Teeners from both sides of the Smokies will meet up for a day of some of the “best” roads in the Smoky Mountains including a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We will meet around 10:30am south of Asheville, NC to begin our mountain road journey. in Waynesville at Nick & Nate's Pizzaria (take it easy on the hand crafted beers! ) followed by more
Don't have a running 914? That's OK... bring whatever you have.
This is simply a get-together of like-minded people looking for a fun, safe day of driving their 914s on twisty mountain roads. No prizes, no contests, no fees; though there might be a t-shirt
ORIGINAL ROUTE NO LONGER VALID - PLEASE SEE ROUTE ABOVEBelow is the planned drive (~130+ miles, ~4 hrs drive time, ~2 hours social time):

approx. 40 miles, 1.25 hours
approx. 1.5 hrs
approx. 50 miles, 1.5 hrs
approx. 30 miles, 1 hour
approx. 10 miles, 20 min
I plan to leave Seymour around 8:00am and meet other area teeners along the way. I will be driving 411 to Sevierville and Newport; 70/25 to Hot Springs; 209 to 63 to Asheville; and 19/23/74 to 112 to the meeting point.
Oddly enough, I may be in the Asheville area then visiting our daughter & hubby, but I'm not yet sure of my final schedule yet & if I'd have time to meet up for lunch &/or drive the route.
IIRC they were looking a a house FS in Waynesville area....so who knows?
I'll keep it in mind.
Cheers!
Tom
///////
That would be AWESOME, Tom!
Maybe I can get BillH1963 to rent me a teener for a day?
Bill - you out there
Look at all those curves! I'm stoked.
Here is a marker to help put the above maps in scale...
I'll buy some large Porsche magnets for my wife's Prius
I could tie one of my registered bumpers to the front hood, kind of like our local brethren do with Bambi down here...
Looking glass falls and the white squirrels in Brevard...
I thought of doing a waterfall tour but decided there was not enough time
May have to do that in the spring.
Steve, I know we've discussed this before but I'm in!. Sounds like a fun day of driving
I priced that idea online last night as a joke for my wife.
Wow, I need to be in the vinyl wrap business
Big Bucks - No Whamys!
I'm in if I can drive the Corolla. Too close not to come.
I will bring th D70 and do my best.
I might have an open passenger seat if you don't want to drive the Corolla.
Thanks Doug, but I will probably have copilots.
Ahh... okay
Steve -
Actually going to be up in knox that weekend, but am gonna have to miss it...will be there for the AL/TN game with my family. Looks like it's gonna be a good drive - hate to miss it.
Maybe next time, Rex.
Anytime you are in the area, give me a shout and maybe we can run the Dragon.
I may be up for some or all of this drive. Living an working out of Sautee GA now and thats pretty close to all this.
If i can get my rust bucket over the mountain, I might join you.
Try to join us around Newport for the drive to Asheville via Hot Springs.
We'll be in Gatlinburg the prior weekend, but that's as close as it gets this time 'round...
Looking forward to it
Looking forward to it too, need to get a little drive time in before just to make sure. I havent really had the time to put many miles on it this summer.
With the onset of chilly weather this past weekend, I will be making sure my heating system is fully operational. I hate driving with cold feet
I will be going over the car this afternoon. Excited about the drive and so far the forecast for next weekend looks nice.
Aweeee... you guys are piss'n me off! That's one of the most beautiful drives in the entire country.
I need one of those Star Trek transporter thingies. Beam me (and my car) out to NC Scotty!
Eric... just fly in and I am sure we can find you a 914 to ride in
Tom T will be in the area all the way from CA and is planning on meeting up with us.
This is going to be a great time whether there are just a couple of us or a dozen or more!
Preview - from yesterday. Beautiful. Lots of leaves falling, next weekend should be great timing.
Hey Guys,
Sorry we won't be able to make it (going to be at that Petit LeMans thing) but I think this is a great idea. Steve and I talked about it a couple months ago - we need an annual Southeast thing - as he mentioned in the original post everything else is just too far for us in the SE. And what a better way to enjoy our cars than driving the wonderful roads in that area!!
Take lots of pictures and video!!
Thanks for chiming in, Bob. So much going on in the Fall that every weekend conflicted with something.
Weather looks to be sunny and in the low 60s. Can't wait!!!
An event like this should definitely happen at least once a year
Got a PM earlier from a teener in Nashville who, along with his wife, is going to make a weekend trip to the Smokies so they can join us on Saturday
You could call this Okteenerfest.... :-)
Approximately what time do you think yall be lunching in Waynesville at Nick & Nate's Pizzaria?
Terry
Those are the best roads in the country I think. My other car club goes up there every year at the end of August and tours for a few days. The roads are so much fun. We base out of Helen Ga area usually. One of our club members runs up there nearly every weekend so he knows where all the good roads are. We just follow him for a few days. Its the most fun I ever had in my car. I bet it would be a blast in the teeners too.
As the weekend nears, let's try to get a rough count of how many people will be attending. I suppose I should call the Pizza place and let them know a (possibly) large group will be invading their space shortly after noon
I will be there
Me too!
To help get this list going, here is who I know will be there so far:
poorsche914 (steve) - '74 LE
haudiosolutions (derek) and his brother - '71 914
black73 (gary) and his wife - '73 914 all the way from Nashville
trojanhorsepower -
dlee6204 (doug) -
Tom T - from California Looking for a seat
Joe22 (joe) -
Northeast914 (ryan) -
JawjaPorsche (terry) - original owner '73 914
Anyone else???
Weren't there some from over on the Club site?
My schedule limits me to just having lunch but it will be great seeing other 914's.
Terry Original Owner 73 914
Sorry for the short notice. I am planning on attending the drive.
Heading out of the Atlanta area so may have to pick up the drive in Waynesville at Nick & Nates Pizzeria if thats ok If I think I can make Ashville on time I'll give that a shot.
Was going to Petite LeMans as I only live about five miles from the track but decided why watch other drivers when I can enjoy driving the twisties myself. Besides have done several in the last five years.
If anyone else is heading out of Atlanta let me know. Planning on leaving around six or seven and taking 441 north. There is always safety in numbers just in case
Hope to see you all in Waynesville around noon.
Ronnie G
Just found out there is some kind of festival going on in Waynesville this Saturday. Main Street will be closed off to traffic. Tons of people. Can not make reservations at the Pizza place because the guy said they will be slammed as soon as the doors open.
Guess we need to come up with an alternate plan unless you want to fight the crowds at lunch time
Any suggestions? Maybe a slight reroute to lunch in Sylva and then back out to the roads? Will have to take a look at the map to see what will work.
Awesome
Will be great meeting you. Check with JawjaPorsche... he may be somewhere along the way.
Also note my previous post... Waynesville is hosting a festival this weekend so we may alter the plans a bit.
Tentative plans are to move lunch to the Nick & Nates in SYLVA.
Will put us at lunch around 12:30 to 1:00.
Stay tuned...

Still 4.5 to 5 hours of DRIVING

Are we still meeting at 10:30ish? Maybe leave the parking lot by 11? Lunch around 1?
I so wish I could make it to this. It looks like an awesome time!
Ross - you can live it thru the pictures if we get a Live Uploader set up (I have asked for one) and then we will see you NEXT year!
The car is gassed up ready to go. Looks like the weather will be just about perfect! Can't wait!
I tightened up the exhaust at the heads, cleaned out the interior and did a quick wash of the exterior (gonna need a whole lot more than soap and water to make mine look good )
Will fill up with gas and buy a couple quarts of oil in the morning. Gas here in east TN dropped 15c per gallon today at $3.249
I am leaving Seymour around 8am. Driving thru Sevierville to meet up with Haudiosolutions and then on to Newport to meet up with Gary from Nashville. Any Knoxville teeners wanna meet up somewhere along the way? Plan on driving 70/25 to Hot Springs; 209 to 63 to Asheville; and 19/23/74 to 112 to the meeting point.
Be safe!
God willing and the teener stays together, I will see yall at lunch stop at 1.
Last minute change in my route to the meeting point in Asheville... not going thru Hot Springs as it will take too long. From Newport, I-40 to destination just off of I-26 near Blue Ridge Parkway entry point.
See ya there!
I am here, i think.
We are still meeting at the church right?
While the change in route & lunch to Sylva due to the apple festival was a good idea, it messed up my plans to join all y'all for lunch at Nate's pizza. The Waynesville one was in the midst of that festival zoo, so Steve was right on to move it to Sylva.
Sorry to have missed a fellow old timer teener - Jawjaw914 - & the rest of you, since we were seeing our kids' "new" house late morning/noon in Candler, & couldn't get out to Sylva in time.
My wife & I spent the afternoon at that zoo in Waynesville, then met up with Steve/poorsche914 in Canton & visited for a bit in a parking lot. So it was nice for me from SoCal to meet up with a fellow Teener in NC while we're here in Asheville to visit our daughter & son-in-law etc.
We also met up with Andy/Scarlet75 earlier this week up in Watertown NY while we were visiting our son at Ft. Drum.
So touched base with a couple of other Teeners on this trip!
Cheers Y'all!
Tom
///////
I just now made it home after a ~350 mile round trip. It was nice meeting other teeners - Terry, Ronnie, Doug, Peter, Gary and his wife, and Tom and his wife. (already knew Derrick ) Nine of us at lunch representing six 914s.
The drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway was really nice - such awesome views! After lunch, some of the group had to head home so it was just Doug, Ronnie and me driving down 107 to 281 to 64. Stopped for gas and went our separate ways as Doug's 914 developed a miss and he decided to head home. Ronnie was going to turn back toward Atlanta anyway at this point. So that left me headed north on 215 - wow, what a great drive! Wish the others could have made it.
Only used about a quart and a half of oil
These cars hummmmm at 70+ mph
If you are in the area, join us for the Spring drive... I plan on putting together a Waterfall Tour.
Pictures...
And some more pics...
I will load some videos later tonight or tomorrow.
A big shout out to Steve aka Poorsche914, who organized Smoky Mountain Day Drive. The weather was awesome and it was great to meet other teener owners who share the same passion. I have not seen that many teeners in one place in a long time.

Signed on tonight for one reason only - hoping to find pictures of the drive. Hate that I couldn't make it. I couldn't get her down off the jack stands - she's just so comfortable...
If I start preparing now, I might be ready for a spring drive.
Nice pictures! Let's see more...
Well I made it home safely with only a few issues. I tried to give my car an Italian tune up on the way home but that didn't fix my problem. Thanks to those that came out today. It was a great time!

Here is a short clip from part of the drive after lunch. Its not the best quality but you get the picture. The best part is at 1:45

I had a great time and it was great meeting everyone. Hope everyone made it back home without any major problems. Hopefully I'll have a full day and eveing open for the spring drive.
This really was a lot of fun. Great group of people, cars, roads, and some beautiful scenery.
After lunch, Judy and I drove to Cherokee for a little shopping and then went to our room on the river at Dillsboro.
Got up Sunday and headed west on 28 to Fontana Lake and Dam.
Then continued on thru the Dragon and back home to Nashville.
Great way to spend a weekend!
Gary... looks like you had a fantastic drive back! Was the Dragon packed?
As promised, here are some videos from our drive...
