914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Gear Oil - Coming Off Blocks - Engine Oil - Castrol?

Posted by: kbrunk1 Sep 30 2012, 09:52 PM

Well she is getting close.

I checked the gear oil after sitting for 25 years and it is real low.

I wanted to change it while it was warm but am afraid there is not enough if I get to drive this sucker.

Saw some SAE 80 at walleyworld and was wondering if folks use it?

Also what is wrong with 30SAE Casteroil or Vavoline 30SAE? for the engine?

Owners manual says SAE30 for engine and

SAE transmission oil MIL-L-2105B or MIL-L205 SAE 90 for gearbox.

Maybe fill it up with Wallworld SAE80 and then heat it up and change it to what the forum recommends?

Brad Penn Racing Oils (same as the old Kendall from the '70s);
SWEPCO 306;
Redline;
Royal Purple;
Castrol GTX High Mileage; and
Mobil 1 V-Twin MC 20w-50.

None of the oil you can get at Wally's will have enough Zinc. (Just went through this on here). SOME parts places have it, but you need to specifically find HIGH Zinc oils for the engine.

Doc Evil recommends the cheapo 80W or 90W gear oil, changed regularly.

Doesn't it have to be GL-5 too?

Yes GL-5. That shouldn't be too hard to find.

As for the engine oil, you may have to order it in. My personal favorite is the Joe Gibbs aircooled oil. You can order it from Jegs. It is designed for aircooled engines.

Call some local v8 type, hot rod speed shops. most of them Carry it. I have one in Tulsa who is the only dealer in okie land.

If you don't want to mess with having it shipped, Zim's in Bedford has Brad Penn.
