Couple of questions re : seat upholstery. Is the side bolster set sold at AA easy for a novice to install? Also" is it possible to replace the side bolsters vinyl w/o removing the center back cushion and material? My side bolsters have a couple of holes thanks to a cigarette buttts from a po, but the tartan cloth is still in remarkable shape. Thanks in advance.

Can you post a link to the product? It's not something that's come up a lot previously.

Jeeperjohn56 used those kits to redo his seats, he did it himself....after he took some upholstry classes. Not sure if you can do the sides without removing the back cushion.

I did the side bolsters myself with the AA kit and it wasn't too hard. I'm not an expert at upholstery either. You don't have to take the center section out I don't think, but it's not hard to remove anyway. Once you actually get the piece in your hand it's pretty clear how it needs to be installed. You unscrew the screws on the back of the headrest, remove the old stuff, then install the new. I think there are metal rods that you need to reuse that help stretch and retain it. It was a pretty high quality product. The warmer the material the easier it is to install.

Happy to help if you decide to buy them. It's been years since I did it but if you start a thread on it it should come back to me.

It's not too difficult but you need strong hands to stretch the vinyl in some spots. There is a pretty good write-up in the Classics forum:

I have seen that kit in the AA cataloge and thought that seemed like a good price. I do believe that the center cushon does have to come out before the side bolsters can be replaced.

If by chance you buy it please show us the finished seats

Thanks for the link - must not have done a good job in my previous thread search. Looks like you have to take out the back cushion, but looks to be easy.

I have done it with the AA kit. Its not that difficult and you don't need any tool nor knowlege. You will have to remove the backrest and headest (they are sewned together) but this is a very easy job. There is a tutorial thread in the "classic" section.

The most difficult part is to fit the vinyl so you have no fold.
Both seats can be done in half a day.
