There was a killer thread of Gulf Orange cars on the Pelican 911 tech forum about a month ago. Including this gorgeous Boxster conversion

Dave, I think it would look really nice if you do it more subtley, as in maybe not a big stripe but rather do the recessed areas of your Fuchs wheels in the gulf orange and maybe the rocker panels and both valances too. then smooth the roof and do it in solid blue. My .02 ...

Sounds pretty nice, but again, we need some Photochop examples to help me picture it....
I slammed it to the ground with photoshop and I can't find the original.
Not exactly the correct colors.

Kinda Like the Opposite of this.. imagine light blue car with orange wheels and rockers/valances..more like a "nod" to Gulf but not a replica. Maybe even orange bumpers would work.

i'm thinking half blue/ half orange on the 916 bumpers. orange rockers, wheels, & spoiler ?
Hmm, that might work well...
I was considering an orange arrow (vinyl sticker) for my car, like on the Targa Florio 908s. I once saw a pic of Brian Redmond with one of those, and the image really stuck in my head. The arrow started at the back of the car, and went along the top (offset to the right of center) and terminated in an arrowhead about 2/3 of the way up along the front deck lid.
Mine would only be on the blue-painted areas, not on the roof.
....Have you tried playing with the 914 stuff in http://www.retromotorcompany.co.uk/selecta/ps.htm ? That might give you an idea of what it would look like.

Had to try my hand at it

Do the side P O R S C H E stripes in orange. MikeZ can have them made..
Or maybe just the rockers and the front and rear valance.
And highlight the Fuchs backgrounds

...per Dave's Bus Selecta link, plus a little help...
It doesn't have the 916 bumpers, but gives a pretty close idea.
I think it looks better than I thought it would.

Did someone say Gulf Colors?
Welcome Chuck...I follow your car on the bird board. I am also a 912 owner, and I love what you have done with the early body...
GULF COLORS ARE COOL...BUT THE SIDE SCRIPT SHOULD BE A CONTRASTING COLOR....LIKE BLACK OR WHITE....
Ihave been thinnking about this livery too! So kewl. The orginal color is a Triumph code called Powder Blue and Marigold for the stripe. The outline stripe is a dark blue... The reason the blue is so "washed out" looking is because the paint was thinned and applied as lightly as possible to save wieght. Same is true for the GT-40s...
I say go for it, but I am taking #20 !
Meredith, thanks for the comments. I debated several color schemes when I painted this car, but when it was all said and done I had to have gulf colors. No regrets
Here's some pics from the for sale ads. Wish I had better ones for you to see.

This looks amazingly like 914 LE color concept...Way cool

It looks really cool.
Now THAT is COOL!
Anyone know where that car is? $$$$$$$$
Hey, I'd like to make another suggestion... look at the picture that Bowlsby posted, do exactly that but bring the orange color that's on the rocker panels a little bit further up maybe 2 or 3 inches. Then run a strip of black vinyl tape (1/4") to seperate the orange and blue. This will give the illusion of having larger rocker panels and smaller doors like the Gulf 917s.... I watched McQueen's "LeMans" last night, LOL..
Doug C
That black/orange one above looks like it has the 914 graphic on the hood. Its the one that has the 914 at the base of the stripes leading over the hood.
Very '70's
Paul
It's been my experiance in building hundreds of "Gulf Blue" 917's and other historic Porsches that it tends to be more of a muted powder blue. The older pictures are not all that accurate. Many restorations have gotten it wrong.
I was able to find a color from DuPont named " Gulf Blue" and the code is 328 from 1978.
searching around & found this site http://www.designsinm.com/html/422.html
917 gulf model for $69. is that a fair price ?
Sounds like a fair price if it's 1/18th scale. The colors just about right.
I had this photo saved in the flolder of desk top images I have used in the past.

Is that gulf model Auto Art or Exotto? If it's Auto Art it may be a bit high. Exotto's stuff is steps above and would normally go for low triple digits.
even Ford race cars came with Gulf colors:

I just snapped this today. Not a Porsche though.

Is there a Part number for that radio antanea that's mounted on the roof of the black/orange 916? I like it..
Doug C
Werent the antennas in some of the 916's in the windscreen/windsheild?
jepp ... George Hussey's 916 has got the windshield antenna
I think I have been made un-pure(ist)
Dan can you do this one with 4 lug Fuchs and black bumper tops?
